Recalls and investigations

  1. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. 2. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Back over prevention, Nov 23, 2022

First, my car had not a drop of antifreeze after driving two hours. Secondly, a week later, I was driving home routinely and began to drive forward when my car’s RPM’s went up very high and the car would not move as I was on a busy highway. Strangely, the vehicle had just had the transmission recall repair for the transmission bushing shifting cable a few weeks earlier. So although we he car was in drive it was not shifting. I turned the car off and on. Then the car did the same thing again and a message stating “transmission service” appeared on the dash board. I had to jump out of the car and run to the side of the road for safety as I broke down on a busy highway near my home. It was very scary.

  3. Engine, Nov 21, 2022

Coolant intrusion into the engine. Coolant was low even after filling chamber causing overheating which is a safety risk. New engine need confirmed by local auto shop. No warning signal other than low coolant. AUL extended car warranty checked the vehicle and would not cover staring the engine had “ sludge” in it.

  4. Power train, Nov 21, 2022

Recall 22S43 is serious enough for Ford to "ground" the vehicle for safety concerns for potential injury to the driver, passengers, and bystanders. I spoke with their recall department on 11-21-2022 and explained that the car is on the Island of Molokai, HI, which does not have a Ford dealer. Rather than authorize a local repair shop to fix the problem, they said I'd have to ferry the vehicle to Oahu at my expense, a very complex, EXPENSIVE, and time-consuming undertaking. And, since I live in AZ, I'd have to fly to HI, rent a car, and spend at least a week there. Why Ford will not authorize a local mechanic to affect repairs is baffling and presents a dilemma for me and the other Ford Escape owners on the island.

  5. Visibility, Nov 17, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the driver’s side windshield cracked causing a visibility hazard to the driver. The contact indicated that the crack was present between the two layers of glass used in the windshield construction. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle in daylight the driver’s vision was impaired by the internal cracks. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 38,500.

  6. Electrical system, Nov 16, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that after parking and turning off the vehicle, the vehicle failed to restart. The battery was later replaced but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who indicated that the failure was due to an unspecified electrical failure and advised that the vehicle be serviced at an authorized Ford dealer. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 80,000.

  7. Power train, Nov 16, 2022

I was driving down the road and the transmission slammed into the next gear so I took it to the garage and they plunged it in and said it was a incorrect gear ratio in between 5-6 not to drive it that the transmission will go out and someone might hit me and I have small kids that ride with me so I am afraid they may get hurt or killed now it sits at house and I have a bank payment on it. A friend of mine has the same thing and his was recalled in June but my number did not make it in the recall can you please add it to the recall so I can get it fixed and drive it and my family be safe in it. Thank you so much [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

  9. Other or unspecified, Nov 16, 2022

The shifter cable bushing went out on my vehicle and had to have it repaired on 11/1/2022. I had to pay out of pocket for this and want to know to be reimbursed for the charges.

  10. Power train, Nov 15, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V413000 (Power Train). The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the vehicle needed to warm up for thirty minutes. Additionally, the vehicle experienced the transmission slipping while driving. The dealer was made aware of the failure but declined to perform the recall repair. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

  11. Seat belts, Nov 15, 2022

Drivers side seat belt retractor or pretensioner does not work. You have to physically push the seat belt back into place. I feel if I were to get in an accident the seat belt would not help me. The vehicle only has 65,400 miles on it. I feel this is unacceptable and Ford should fix this as a safety issue. The dealer gave a estimate to fix this problem and I believe their estimate is unacceptable at $535 for parts and labor.

  12. Electrical system, Nov 14, 2022

I drive a 2014 Ford Escape Titanium. My battery keeps draining and my car won't start. I tested my battery and it tested 12/14. Next week, car wouldn't start again. Got my car tested and stated that there is an unknown code meaning that the ECM is faulty. This falls under recall 15V40600 or what now could be 22V413000. My car isn't covered under the recall being two months shy of the production date. Additionally, I've had issues with the cooling system since I purchased the vehicle. Again, this isn't covered under the recall either.

  13. Engine, Nov 12, 2022

Car has idling issues and coolant is repeatedly leaking onto the engine, which is causing smoking and could cause a fire. Car stalls often. It was diagnosed by a non certified Ford repair shop in one day and they suggested I take it to a Ford repair shop, because there are issues with the 2014 1.6 engine in the Ford Escapes. I took it to the shop and I was told a hose was leaking and it was not the engine. Car continued to smoke and stall. I took it back and after a week I was told it needed an engine because the coolant is leaking and it is not safe to drive. Ford said because the car has 113,000 miles on it it will cost $7-$8,000 to repair. The car is paid off and is not safe to drive. I was told by the dealer that they only fix 1.5 engines, but everything I am reading says the issue is with the 1.6 engines. I contacted Ford Customer Service and they told me to contact you because there is nothing they will do. The engine light has been coming on and we have been taking it in for repair for about 2 years. It should not have taken this long to diagnose

  14. Engine and engine cooling, Nov 10, 2022

The contact owns 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the vehicle started shaking and the contact noticed black smoking coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled when she shifted the to reverse. The service required check engine coolant message was displayed. The contact added coolant into the reservoir and the vehicle was taken to dealer. The dealer stated that coolant was leaking into the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted, and a case was filed. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 59,000.

  15. Engine and engine cooling, Nov 7, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, an audible chime was heard with an unknown message displayed before the vehicle decelerated to 25 MPH. The contact stated after turning off and restarting the vehicle, the failure was self-corrected but recurred. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact discovered later that the coolant reservoir was constantly low and coolant needed to be added frequently. On several occasions, coolant had leaked from the engine. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number 17V209000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 90,000.

  16. Engine and engine cooling, Nov 7, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the vehicle was overheating however, the contact was able to pull over into an Auto Zone and added more coolant to the reservoir. The vehicle was taken an independent mechanic and no failure was found. The mechanic added more coolant. The dealer was contacted and stated there was no recall on the vehicle for the failure. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not under recall for the failure. The failure mileage was 124,000.

  20. Power train, Oct 31, 2022

There is a safety recall on this vehicle. I never received the alert that the part was in stock. I had the actual problem happen to me where I put vehicle in park. Shifter was in Park. I exited the vehicle and it started rolling away. As I jumped into the vehicle to stop it from hitting another vehicle (fortunately it did not roll over me) , I opened the drivers door and it got caught on a large bush/tree which caused the door to hyperextend open and now the door does not close correctly at the top and it is scratched up / paint chipped. I am asking that Ford pay for fixing the door as I did what I was supposed to do (set emergency brake but it snapped right at the same time), but they are refusing to pay for the repairs to the door.

  21. Other or unspecified, Oct 29, 2022

There was a serious safety recall several months ago, but I have yet to hear from the dealer about the necessary repairs. The manufacturer has failed to remedy the issue in a timely manner.

I set an appointment to take my 2014 Ford Escape into The Faricy Boys Ford Dealership in Cañon City, Colorado for a “The Works” service on 21 Oct 2022. This oil change service includes oil change, oil filter, multi point inspection and tire rotation. I took it in that morning for this service and waited in the waiting area for my vehicle to be completed. I was approached by [XXX], my Service Advisor, and told they encountered an issue. [XXX] told me my “lug nuts are swollen” and need to be replaced immediately for safety issues in addition to the fact that without new lug nuts they’re unable to do the tire rotation on my vehicle. I was told that swollen lug nuts meant there’s no way to change a tire with the provided tire wrench in the vehicle. She proceeded to tell me that they have the lug nuts in stock for just under $200.00. Sounded odd, extremely expensive and so I refused. $200.00 for lug nuts when this is a Ford issue with inferior product on an item as simple as the tires! According to what I found, “lug nuts can swell and delaminate after changes in temperature and exposure to moisture. Vehicle owners then have to try (and apparently fail) to remove the swollen lug nuts with a lug wrench supplied with the Ford. They have to replace them.” At home I looked this up and found that six models of Ford vehicles from mid 2010’s that all have the same problem. The core of the manufactured lug nuts is steel with chrome, stainless steel or aluminum to match the wheels. Now I’m in a place where my lug nuts may not come off if I have a flat, which could strand me who knows where in addition to not knowing what other long term problems these cheap lug nuts will cause all of us who own these vehicles. We should have these lug nuts replaced at no cost with correct lug nuts that are safe and won’t abandon us in unknown location, especially someone like me with Rheumatoid Arthritis!! 24. Power train, Structure, Oct 25, 2022

Contacted local Ford dealership(s) in reference to 2 open recalls on my vehicle: Transmission gear shift linkage and door latches. I was made aware of the door latch recall when I was traveling with my 2 children who were in the back seat and the back door opened and would not latch closed. Upon researching, I found the 2 recalls and have tried for over 4 months to get it repaired as it is a serious safety issue. I was advised that it could be in the repair shop for 2-3 months and I would not have any transportation as they stated they do not have "courtesy" vehicles. I feel like Ford should honor the recall in a timely manner which they are NOT. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request.

The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
