An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Rack and Pinion Gear Assembly. Yes, but already inspected by Ford Dealership. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Stopped to get gas while on a trip, when turned the engine on, the steering wheel would not turn. It was completely locked with no prior warning. If this had happened on the interstate, I could have wrecked with children in the vehicle. I am not even sure I would have been able to turn the wheel to pull off to the side of the road. VERY dangerous. Had to be towed 24miles to closest Ford dealership and spent the night in a strange town as everything was closed and couldn't get rental as the supply was low in the tiny town. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, dealer service center confirmed problem and informed me it would cost $3K to fix on my 2014 Ford Escape, which only has 54K miles on it. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes, by Ford's service center, where the vehicle is being repaired. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning until after the problem occurred. The reading stated, "Steering Assist Fault Service Required" when I started my car to a locked steering wheel.

After a 45 minute highway drive, I left my vehicle running in park to go run into a store briefly. Upon re-entering my car and shifting into reverse my engine revved but the car did not move. Initially I thought I was caught on a curb until all of a sudden the transmission caught an jolted the car backwards. I just barely managed to get the car home but after catching gears to move forward it would slip the engine would rev and then catch and jolt forward. Eventually it died and had to be pushed home. After reading online about this issue it seems common for this model and year, however my vehicle fell into a different made year. My big concern here is this happened without warning as seems to be the case with many other. Luckily i was a short ways from my destination and also parked in a parking lot when it first occurred, rather than doing 65 on the highway in the fast lane. A recall on all transmission from 2014 Ford Escapes should be activated to correct this issue. Multiple mechanics have mentioned it is a terrible year for the car, so clearly its common knowledge that Ford has slightly addressed. I do not care that I have to pay for this expensive fix, I am more concerned about it happening to other and severe accidents occurring.

The coolant replacement valve need to be replaced every 6 months and there are other year of this vehicle that has been recalled but, I do not see it recalled on the 2014. I have replaced this part almost 5 times since I bought this car from my dealership.

I was driving in a parking lot and put my car in reverse to allow another car out of a parking spot. When I tried to put my car back into drive it was stuck in reverse and would not shift. This nearly sent me crashing into the car behind me as a result. I couldn’t even put the car in park because the shift was stuck. I turned off the car and attempted to turn it back on but it would not start. Bystanders helped push my car into a parking spot where I attempted to troubleshoot the issue. I was able to push a white lever under the shift panel to get the shift stick to move but it was then stuck in neutral and would not recognize any other gear. I had to put the emergency parking break on to keep my car from rolling into other cars around me. I did some research and found Recall # 18S20 - 2013-2014 Escape with a 6F35 Transmission Shift Cable Bushing Replacement. I contacted a few Ford dealerships in my area but they said my Vin was not included in this recall even though this is the exact issue I was having and posed a severe safety issue.

ALL THE SPARK PLUGS WERE EASILY CHANGED EXCEPT CYLINDER #3, THIS SPARK PLUG SEIZED. AS A RESULT, I HAD MY FORD ESCAPE TOWED TO HASTINGS FORD (GREENVILLE, NC) ON 4/29/2021. GARY FROM THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CALLED TO TELL ME (@5:00 4/29/2021) THAT THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO REMOVE THE SEIZED SPARK PLUG AND THAT REPLACING THE CYLINDER HEAD WOULD NOT BE SUFFICIENT. THE ENGINE (1.6 L ECOBOOST) IS KNOWN TO LEAK COOLANT AND THAT IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY TO JUST REPLACE THE CYLINDER HEAD. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDED THAT I REPLACE THE "LONG BLOCK" FOR A TOTAL COST OF $7800 (INCLUDING LABOR). MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 104,954 MILE. THE DEALERSHIP KNOWINGLY ACKNOWLEDGES A DEFECT WITH THE MOTOR BUT WILL NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS FIXING THE ENGINE. I CALL FORD'S CUSTOMER SERVICE ON 4/29/2021 @ 6:06 TO ASK FOR ASSISTANCE IN REPAIRING MY VEHICLE (CASE # - CAS-31599643) AND RECEIVED A CALL FROM A SUPERVISOR ON 4/30/2021 @ 1:37. I HAVE FOUND 2 CLASS ACTION LAW SUITS AGAINST FORD FOR THE 1.6 L ECOBOOST DUE TO THE COOLANT LEAK DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE AND BELIEVE THAT FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS.

THE CAR SUDDENLY LOST ACCELERATION POWER WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH. DRIVER PULLED TO SAFE AREA AND STOPPED CAR AT WHICH POINT IT WOULD NOT MOVE. NO WARNING/EMERGENCY LIGHTS DISPLAYED IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (NO CHECK ENGINE, BATTERY, OVERHEAT, OR OTHER HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY DISPLAYED). TOWED TO CLOSEST FORD DEALER. DIAGNOSTICS STATED TRANSMISSION FAILURE (92,000 MI; BOUGHT USED FROM FORD DEALER IN 2017 WITH 60K MILES). TRANSMISSION REPLACED. DURING TEST DRIVE FOLLOWING REPLACEMENT, FORD DEALER MECHANIC IDENTIFIED A RATTLING NOISE. THIS NOISE WAS NOT HEARD PRIOR TO THE FAILURE BUT MAY HAVE BEEN PRESENT DURING THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE BUT NOT HEARD BECAUSE OF THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER/ABILITY TO ACCELERATE WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. THE MECHANIC RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE FURTHER INSPECTION REVEALED A CRACKED FLYWHEEL/FLEXPLATE. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL FOR SIMILAR FORD CARS (I.E. EDGE) FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE AND REPAIRS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL INCLUDED REPAIRS OF TRANSMISSION. ADDITIONALLY, TRANSMISSION/FLEXPLATE FAILURES IN THE 2014 ESCAPE IS INCLUDED IN A 2020 CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT ALLEGING FORD ACTIVELY CONCEALED ENGINE & TRANSMISSION FAILURES. VEHICLES IDENTIFIED IN THIS SETTLEMENT SHOULD BE RECALLED. CONSUMERS WHO HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR IDENTIFIED FAILURES SHOULD BE REIMBURSED PARTS/LABOR BY FORD. THE VEHICLE IN THIS INCIDENT WAS ALSO INCLUDED IN A PRIOR ENGINE RECALL. THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED BY A FORD DEALER IN MAY 2018.

DUE TO COOLANT LEAK/BURNING/LEAKING INTO ENGINE I AM HAVING TO ADD COOLANT TO MY VEHICLE EVERY OTHER MONTH WHEN THE VEHICLE ALERTS ME THAT COOLANT LEVEL IS LOW. I TOOK CAR IN BACK IN 2018 WHEN THE RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE WAS CREATED. THE RECALL DID NOTHING TO FIX THE ACTUAL ISSUE OF WHERE THE COOLANT WAS GOING AND ONLY INSERTED A SENSOR IN THE SYSTEM TO NOTIFY THE DRIVER OF THE ISSUE SOONER TO HOPEFULLY PREVENT ENGINE FROM CATCHING FIRE DUE TO RUNNING TOO HOT. MY VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 55K MILES AND ENGINE IS NOT PERFORMING AS IT DID BEFORE AND I AM CONCERNED THAT COOLANT HAS DAMAGED MY ENGINE. FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS SAID THAT SINCE MY VEHICLE IS 2014 MODEL YEAR THAT IT IS OUT OF ANY WARRANTY. THIS IS REALLY NOT ACCEPTABLE AS I MENTIONED THEY IDENTIFIED AN ISSUE WITH THE COOLANT BUT DIDN'T FIX IT AND ONLY PUT AN EARLY ALERT IN. PLEASE LOOK INTO AND ADVISE HOW I CAN GET THIS CORRECTED OR REPLACED. WHEN THIS HAPPENED IN 2018 THE VEHICLE SAID IT WAS RUNNING HOT AND REDUCED POWER AND I COULD ONLY DRIVE IT FOR A FEW MINS AT A TIME TO GET IT TO A DEALER TO CHECK IT OUT. THIS WAS IN JULY 2018 AND I HAVE BEEN ADDING COOLANT EVERY COUPLE OF FEW MONTHS SINCE JULY OF 2018.

I TRIED TO PARK MY CAR AS USUALLY, PUT THE SHIFT IN P, BUT THE CAR CONTINUED TO MOVE. I WAS SCARED AND UNPLEASANTLY SURPRISED. I HAD TO TO DRIVE AROUND THE PARKING LOT IN FRONT OF HOME DEPOT IN DICKSON CITY AND FINALLY DECIDED TO TURN OF THE CAR. AFTER THAT I WAS NOT ABLE TO TURN ON THE ENGINE. I HAD THE CAR TOWED AWAY TO GIBBONS FORD.
