Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.
An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. WHILE DRIVING AT TIMES WE CAN SMELL FUMES FROM THE ENGINE. IT IS VERY STRONG. IT WILL START AND THEN STOP AFTER A WHILE. THE SMELL IS STRONG WITH CARBON. IT MAKES US SICK AND NAUSEOUS. WE HAVE HAD TO ROLL THE WINDOWS DOWN AND PULL OVER AT TIMES. SO FAR THIS HAS HAPPENED ONLY WHILE DRIVING. WE CAN BE ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET OR DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY WITH THE CRUSE CONTROL ON AND IT WILL HAPPEN. WE HAVE TREATED THIS CAR WELL AND ONLY HAD AN AUTHORIZED DEALER PERFORM MAINTENANCE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF CHANGING THE WIPERS. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME WE HAVE HAS ISSUES WITH THIS CAR (WE BOUGHT THIS NEW). WE HAVE HAD THE DEALERSHIP REPLACE A DEFECTIVE BREAK DRUM (LESS THAN 2K MILES), A DEFECTIVE TRACK THAT MOVES THE ELECTRIC SEAT AND A FAULTY EXTERIOR DOOR LATCH. COULD NOT CHANGE THE BACK WIPER BLADE HAD TO TAKE IT IN (WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE CENTER THEY HAD ISSUES IN THE BEGINNING FIGURING IT OUT ALSO). NOW THE SMELL ISSUE HAD MADE THIS A BAD EXPERIENCE. IF IT JUST WAS A BAD SMELL THAT WOULD BE ONE ISSUE, HOWEVER THIS IS TOXIC AND MAKES BOTH OF US NAUSEOUS. THIS SHOULD REALLY NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH SOON BEFORE SOMEONE GETS LIGHT HEADED FROM THE SMELL AND HAS AN ACCIDENT.

ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON ONE DAY THEN WENT OFF THE NEXT DAY. A WEEK LATER WENT TO GET ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND WAS NOTIFIED OF OIL IN COOLANT AND POSSIBLE HEAD GASKET CRACKED AS WELL. THEY RECOMMENDED TAKE IT TO MECHANIC NEXT DOOR. APPARENTLY THE ENGINE CYLINDER HEAD OVERHEATED AND CRACKED. OIL LEAKED INTO OTHER SYSTEMS IN ENGINE CONTAMINATED VALVES, INTAKES, SPARK PLUGS ETC. COULD HAVE COMBUSTED CAUSING FIRE AT ANY MOMENT. MECHANIC TOLD US TO HAVE IT TOWED TO FORD NOT SAFE TO DRIVE 3 MILES. GOT CAR FIXED AT FORD DEALERSHIP FOR $3551.09. THE FOLLOWING WEEK WE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR OUR OTHER 2014 FORD ESCAPE BUILT IN SAME LOUISVILLE FACTORY A FEW WEEKS EARLIER THAN THE JUST REPAIRED ESCAPE. GOT THE RECALL ADDRESSED ON THAT VEHICLE BUT FORD SAYS THE VIN FOR THE ONE I JUST PAID FOR HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED FOR THE RECALL! REALLY???

A RECALL WAS INITIATED FOR MY CAR FOR LOCALIZED OVERHEATING IN ENGINE CYLINDER CAUSING CYLINDER HEAD TO CRACK, AND PRESSURIZED OIL LEAKS THAT CAN RESULT IN A FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I INITIALLY BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR MY ENGINE OVERHEATING WHERE MY CAR WAS GIVING ME A WARNING SIGN TO PULL OVER AND IMMEDIATELY TURN OFF MY CAR. THEY REPLACED THE COOLANT HOSE. TWO MONTHS LATER THE SAME ISSUE OCCURRED AND THEY THEN REPLACED THE COOLANT TANK. FAST FORWARD ONE YEAR AND THE ISSUE BEGAN TO HAPPEN ONCE AGAIN. I TOOK MY CAR BACK IN AND THE COOLANT TANK WAS REPLACED FOR THE SECOND TIME IN MAY OF 2018. I HAD NO ISSUES UNTIL DECEMBER OF 2018 WHERE ONCE AGAIN THE CAR GAVE ME THE SAME WARNING SIGN AND ONCE AGAIN NEEDS THE COOLANT HOSE REPLACED DUE TO IT LEAKING. THEY HAVE TOLD ME I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THIS ON MY OWN AND PAYING FOR IT. EACH TIME I HAVE BEEN DRIVING WHEN THIS ISSUE OCCURS AND I HAVE TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER AND TURN MY CAR OFF TO AVOID FURTHER DAMAGE AS WELL AND I CANNOT DRIVE MY CAR FOR NUMEROUS DAYS WHILE I WAIT FOR THEM TO REPAIR IT. I WANT TO FIGURE OUT A SOLUTION MOVING FORWARD BECAUSE CLEARLY THIS CAR IS NOT BEING FIXED EVEN WHEN I TAKE IT IN OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

JANUARY 9, 2019 AT 10:39PM MY 2014 FORD ESCAPE CAUGHT ON FIRE. DRIVING DOWN INTERSTATE 81, GOING SPEED LIMIT 70 MPH, VEHICLE SHUT OFF AND SAID "SERVICE ENGINE NOW". STEERING AND BRAKES DID NOT LOCK UP BUT THE VEHICLE LOST RPMS AND WAS NOT RUNNING AS I PULLED OVER TO THE RIGHT HAND SHOULDER, I WAS IN THE LEFT HAND LANE WHEN MY VEHICLE SHUT OFF. AS I STOPPED, I PUT VEHICLE IN PARK AND TURNED KEY OFF, ALL WHILE IT SAID "SERVICE ENGINE NOW". I TURNED MY HAZARDS ON AND GOT OUT MY PHONE TO CALL SOMEONE FOR HELP. AS I LOOKED UP I SEEN FLAMES COMING FROM THE WINDSHIELD WIPER AREA AND SMOKE IN FRONT OF MY LIGHTS, I GRABBED MY WORK BAG AND JUMPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE, JUMPED ACROSS THE GUARD RAIL, AND IMMEDIATELY CALLED 911 FROM A SAFE DISTANCE. IN APPROXIMATELY 6-9 MINUTES THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF MY VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES AS I WAS ON THE PHONE WITH 911. TOOK RESPONDERS ABOUT 15 TO 20 MINUTES TO ARRIVE AND TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. AS SOON AS RESPONDERS FINALLY SHOWED, I COULD HEAR BOTH TIRES EXPLODE A FEW MINUTES APART FROM EACH OTHER. ONCE FIRE WAS SAFELY PUT OUT, THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF MY VEHICLE WAS MELTED AND THE INSIDE AS WELL WAS BEYOND RECOGNIZABLE. I WAS TOLD MY VEHICLE IS TOTALLED, OBVIOUSLY, AND I GOT A TOW TO TAKE VEHICLE TO MY HOUSE WHERE THE 2014 FORD ESCAPE IS SITTING IN MY YARD. I FIGURED MY INSURANCE COMPANY MIGHT COME LOOK AT IT BUT THEY DIDN'T BECAUSE ALL I HAD WAS LIABILITY ON IT. I DID NOT KNOW UNTIL A COUPLE DAYS LATER THERE WAS IN FACT A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE, DUE TO RISK OF ENGINE FIRE.

THE VEHICLE TREMORS AND SHUDDERS WHILE DRIVING. IT STARTED JUST A LITTLE OVER 100,000 MILES. IT FEELS LIKE YOU'RE DRIVING ACROSS A RUGGED OR BUMPY ROAD, BUT IT'S THE ENTIRE VEHICLE THAT SHAKES. FORDS DIAGNOSTIC WAS CONCLUDED WITHOUT THE TRANSMISSION FAULT LIGHT OR CE LIGHT ON ACKNOWLEDGING AN ISSUE. THEY KEPT FOR DAYS AND RAN SEVERAL TESTS. THE MECHANIC COULD TELL BY DRIVING IT A FEW TIMES THAT IS HAS WHAT HE CALLED THE 'TRANSMISSION SHUDDER.' IF HE KNEW WHAT IT WAS AND MENTIONED HOW COMMON IT WAS ON MY MODEL, THEN WHY IS IT NOT UNDER A RECALL? AFTER RESEARCH, I HAVE READ OTHER EXPERIENCING THE SAME COMPLAINTS. ALSO, WHY AFTER DRIVING 12,000 MILES AFTER THE DIAGNOSTIC NOT A SINGLE LIGHT HAS INDICATED AN ISSUE. IT JUST CONTINUALLY SHAKES AND I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO TRUST FOR IT TO TAKE MY FAMILY AND I ANYWHERE. IT'S MY DAILY DRIVER BUT I ONLY LIVE 4 MINUTE SFROM WORK AND THAT'S ALREADY RISKY TO ME.

AFTER DOING MY RESEARCH, I LEARNED THAT THE ESCAPE HAS HAD TRANSFER CASE ISSUES FROM THE MODEL YEAR 2002 UNTIL 2014 YET FORD HAS DONE NOTHING TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION. I HAVE EMAILED AND POSTAL MAILED THE CEO OF FORD WITH NO RESPONSE. I DO NOT KNOW HOW A COMPANY CAN LET SOMETHING AS SIGNIFICANT AS THIS REPAIR GO ON FOR TWELVE YEARS AND NOT RECALL THE VEHICLE? EVENTUALLY THIS WILL BE A $3000 REPAIR ON A FOUR YEAR OLD VEHICLE. THAT IS MONEY I DO NOT HAVE. THE CAR CONTINUES TO MAKE A WHINING NOISE WHEN DRIVING ON ANY TERRAIN AT ANY SPEED.

THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED 2 DAYS AGO I COULD PUT THE CAR INTO GEAR BUT IT WOULD NOT ENGAGE AND GO FORWARD OR BACKWARD AND I HAD TO COAST TO A STOP AND PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND HAVE IT TOWED.

MY CAR KEPT SHUTTING OFF ON ME AND I TOOK IT TO MY DEALER AND THEY SAID THE COOLANT WAS LEAKING INTO MY CYLINDER HEAD AND I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. I SEE ON HERE THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE RECALLS FOR THIS MODEL DEALING WITH THE COOLANT LEAKING. HOWEVER, THE DEALER CALLED FORD AND WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT COVERED. MY CAR IS ONLY 4 YEARS OLD AND I NEED A COMPLETE NEW ENGINE FOR $9,000 DOLLARS. I'M NOT SURE WHO TO COMPLAIN TO OR HOW TO GET THIS HANDLED BUT I DON'T HAVE $9K LAYING AROUND. I WORK TWO JOBS AS IT IS AND I CAN'T AFFORD IT.
Air bags, Seat belts, Jan 7, 2019, crash
I WAS IN A AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT WHEN ANOTHER CAR FAILED TO YIELD RIGHT OF WAY. MY DRIVERS SIDE DOOR AIRBAG FAILED TO DEPLOY. MY SEAT BELT ALSO DID NOT HOLD ME TIGHT IN THE SEAT. I HAD SHOULDER AND NECK INJURIES. I CALLED FORD MOTOR CO. THEY HAVE REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING. MY CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS.

VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND WHEN PUTTING THE REAR SEAT DOWN IT CAUSED THE SEAT BELT BUCKLES TO GET STUCK UNDER THE SEAT CUSHIONS WITH NO WAY TO GET THEM OUT. NOW THE SEAT BELTS IN THE REAR PASSENGER SEATS CANNOT BE USED SAFELY AS THERE IS NO WAY TO BUCKLE PASSENGERS IN WITH THE BUCKLE STUCK UNDER THE SEATS. THIS TO ME IS A SAFETY RISK AND FLAW IN THE DESIGN AS THERE SHOULD BE NO WAY FOR THE SEAT BUCKLE TO BECOME STUCK UNDER THE SEAT CUSHION ESPECIALLY NOT ON A VEHICLE WITH UNDER 40,000 MILES.
