Recalls and investigations

  1. Visibility, power window devices and controlsJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2017 Escape vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 16V617. The power-operated windows may exert excessive force when encountering an object, before they automatically reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 118, "Power-Operated Window Systems."

A closing window that does not reverse direction as expected can pinch a driver or passenger before retracting, increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers will update the power window operating system software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 22, 2026. Owners may contact customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C29. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6, 2026.

  2. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.

  3. Power train, automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl)Jun 10, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

  4. Visibility, power window devices and controlsAug 24, 2016

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2017 Ford Escape Titanium and SE vehicles manufactured October 5, 2015, to May 12, 2016. The settings for the closing-force of the power-operated windows may allow the windows to close on an object such as a body part and injure it before the windows auto-reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 118, "Power-Operated Window Systems."

If a window closes on a body part, it can increase the risk of injury.

Ford has notified owners, and dealers will update the power window operating system software, free of charge. The recall began on September 6, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16C12.

  1. Engine, Jul 23, 2026

The 2017 Ford Escape was purchased on November 11, 2025 as a used vehicle with 65,626 miles on it. The car began to give Check Engine lights in February and March of 2026 with codes P0301 (Cylinder 1 Misfire) and P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire). Replaced coil packs and codes went away for a time. In April the car began running very rough, so it was taken to a local Ford Dealership for repair. By this time, we became aware of the coolant intrusion issue with these Ford Escape engines due to design flaw. The service personnel found no antifreeze intrusion into the cylinders but noted that the spark plugs had been changed from OEM to another type (before the expected time for a tuneup) and they were all fouled out, indicating that a potential problem existed. The spark plugs were replaced with OEM plugs and the car ran fine for a time. The P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire) Check Engine code returned on April 13. Took the vehicle to a different Ford Dealership for repair. Provided previous maintenance information and extended warranty information to Service Manager. The inspection diagnosis revealed engine failure due to antifreeze intrusion into the cylinders requiring an engine replacement with cost of $10,875.00. The extended warranty company denied the repair claim due to the faulty design of the engine block by Ford. Although Ford had a Customer Satisfaction Program in place for the repair of this specific issue (21N12) which provided financial compensation for those affected by the antifreeze intrusion issue resulting in engine failure, this program ended on November 30, 2022. This left us no option but to replace the engine on a vehicle we purchased only a few months before.

  2. Engine, Jul 22, 2026

Coolant leaking into cylinder confirmed by independent mechanic. Unable to clear code P0303. This is a documented problem with this make model with eco-boost engines but Ford claims my car is not included in recall although i do have the eco-boost and make model and year. Need complete engine replace. This is a major engine design problem

  3. Engine, Jul 22, 2026

Ford has known of a coolant intrusion problem and even issued an extended 7 yr/84k mile warranty for this issue. The car has no issues during that time. I now have to replace the engine on a 9 year old car with only 80k miles on it. Cars engines should last more than 9 years. Ford told me that an engine replacement at 9 years could happen to anyone. There are hundred of complaints online about this known issue. If the engine were to go out on a busy road, it could easily cause an accident.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 73,000.

  7. Engine, Jul 20, 2026

I am reporting a serious engine failure involving a 2017 Ford Escape SE AWD 2.0L EcoBoost, VIN [XXX]. The vehicle was purchased in October 2024 as a Ford Blue Advantage Certified vehicle from Lithia Ford of Boise with approximately 32,000 miles. The vehicle currently has approximately 45,000 miles. In June 2026, the vehicle developed a check engine warning light while being driven in [XXX]. Prior to this event, the vehicle had shown no unusual symptoms, warning signs, or performance issues. The vehicle was inspected by an independent automotive repair facility, Meridian Automotive in [XXX], and was diagnosed with coolant intrusion requiring replacement of the long block engine assembly. The estimated repair cost is approximately $9,000–$10,000. This is a major engine failure occurring at only 45,000 miles and after approximately 13,000 miles of ownership since purchase. 8. Engine, Jul 18, 2026

Intermittent Misfire of cylinder 1, service engine light is on, coolant level goes low very fast and needs to be added often. white smoke from exhaust.

  9. Engine, Jul 16, 2026

2017 Ford Escape SE. 77,000 miles. Blown head gasket due to coolant leak that ford was aware of in letter TSV19-2139 but no recall. Cylinder 2 misfire code even after tune up. Today catastrophic overheating with no warning and car went into limp mode at the intersection of Hull Street and Southshore Dr. Midlothian Va 23112. I reached out to local ford dealer and to Ford Consumer affairs but they are unwilling to repair though there was a a courtesy notice posted that the repair would be free if less than 7 years or under 84,000 miles which my vehicle is. I have joined a class action law suit regarding Fords knowledge of the problem in 2019 and their lack of a preventive recall.

  10. Engine, Jul 15, 2026

The vehicle experienced an internal engine failure involving the engine block/long block. The engine had a multi-cylinder misfire, and an independent repair facility inspected the vehicle and found coolant traces in multiple cylinders. The repair facility referenced Ford TSB 22-2133 and recommended replacement of the engine long block to correct the issue. The failed engine is not currently available for inspection because the vehicle was traded in after the repair estimate determined it was not economically feasible to repair. We suffered a big loss The safety concern was the potential for sudden loss of engine power due to the misfire and internal engine failure. A vehicle experiencing severe misfires while driving could have reduced performance, hesitation, or loss of power, creating a safety risk depending on driving conditions. The problem was confirmed by an independent service center. The vehicle was not inspected by Ford, police, or insurance representatives. Prior to failure, the vehicle developed engine symptoms consistent with a misfire. The check engine light/engine misfire condition occurred before diagnosis. The independent service facility confirmed the condition and found coolant traces in multiple cylinders.

  11. Engine, Jul 14, 2026

The vehicle’s engine malfunctioned while driving. The check-engine light illuminated, the vehicle began running rough when starting, and the engine shut off approximately three times while being driven. An authorized Ford dealer inspected the vehicle and confirmed "Diagnostic code: P0303. Dealer diagnosis: Coolant intrusion into cylinder #3 Dealer cited TSB 22-2322". The unexpected engine shutdown and loss of power while driving created a safety risk because the driver lost the ability to maintain speed and safely maneuver in traffic. The vehicle currently has approximately 78,419 miles. The engine and vehicle are available for inspection upon request. Ford was contacted for goodwill assistance, but assistance was denied under Ford policy.

  12. Engine, Jul 14, 2026

In 2020, my vehicle experienced a coolant leak, which caused the engine to overheat and fail. I had the motor replaced at a Ford service center. Today, in July 2026, my vehicle is experiencing the same issue. The coolant intrusion caused the motor to fail. The vehicle had been inspected and serviced by the Ford service center in December of 2025 and has had annual service/inspections since I purchased the vehicle in 2016. Both times, my safety and the safety of other drivers were put at risk. This issue comes on suddenly, with no warning, and has occurred each time going 65mph on the interstate. There is a sudden loss of power/sputtering combined with high engine temperature. There was no warning until the issue became critical and the check engine light began to flash.

  13. Electrical system, Jul 12, 2026

Vehicles auto start stop malfunctions and turns car off at red light. Message states to shift to park and then to press ignition.

  14. Power train, Jul 11, 2026

The car developed a sudden metalic rattle noise and with no service indication lights on the dash. It was immeaditley serviced by the local Ford dealership and diagnosed as a cracked flex plate in the drivetrain after just 51,000 original miles. This is still within the original milage warranty but outside the warranty limit by years dispite the fact a flexplate doesn't go bad by age. Failure of the flexplate (between engine and transmission) can result in a sudden and major failure of the vehicle's transmission and risk to occupants. I have learned this is a very common point of failure for Ford Escape, Fusion, and Edge vehicles with the 1.5 and 2.0 Ecoboost engines. A CSP repair notice 22N12 and 22N112 has been issued pertaining to certain Fusion and Edge vehicles with 2.0 engines. However, neither the Escape model or the 1.5 engine is included although it uses the same flex plate part and transmission. In addition, the problem was also in SSM-48725 that missing or damaged aliginment pins is a primary cause of failure in the flex plate. Ford is knowingly putting people at risk of harm and financial hardship with a documented and chronic failure of this specific defective part.

  15. Engine, Jul 11, 2026

The engine overheated and went into limp mode while on the busy interstate, we nearly were hit trying to get off the road because we could not keep speed. The car is available for inspection. It has the typical symptoms of the coolant intrusion as acknowledged by Ford in Technical Service Bulletins 19-2139 and 22-2322. These include startup misfires, rapid loss of coolant into the combustion chambers without external leaks, and severe overheating causing the vehicle to enter limp mode. The misfire's are throwing engine codes P0302 (Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected) and P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected) This just happened on July 8, 2026 and the car has 105,203 miles.

  16. Engine, Jul 11, 2026

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Coolant system coolant is leaking into cylinder #3, causing misfires; head gasket leaking into cylinder. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? UNKNOWN Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Confirmed via dealer diagnosis Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Unknown when the underlying problem first occurred.

  17. Engine, Jul 11, 2026

Coolant intrusion in cylinder #4. Documented in Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 21N12. Requires engine replacement. Vehicle has 40k miles.

  18. Power train, Engine, Jul 10, 2026

Check engine light came on XXX. Engine coolant level was extremely low, shuddering "start" several times the previous week. My 2017 Ford Escape 2.0L EcoBoost Turbo engine, with only 38,245 original miles has the well known and documented issue with the 2.0L EcoBoost block with the P0302 misfire code. Numerous TSB's have been issued about this (some are TSP 19-2346 and TSB 22-2229). The engine coolant has intruded into Cylinder 2 necessitating a long block engine replacement. This was the formal diagnosis by the Ford Service Department at my Ford Dealership on XXX, after running a cooling system pressure test and a borescope inspection with photos proving coolant is in Cylinder 2. I've seen numerous other complaints online and on this website ([XXX]) about this exact issue with the same yr/make/model/engine. Since this is a premature failure of a major powertrain component due to a known factory defect which can cause safety issues, please issue a recall for 2017 Ford Escape cars with the 2.0L EcoBoost Turbo engines. This can cause a fire (and has from what I have read) and damage the catalytic converter if driven. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  19. Engine, Jul 10, 2026

While driving my 2017 Ford Escape with the 1.5L EcoBoost engine AFTER an oil change, I noticed white smoke coming from the exhaust. Shortly afterward, the check engine light began flashing. I immediately stopped driving the vehicle and had it inspected by an independent repair shop. The shop diagnosed the vehicle with a cracked engine related to coolant intrusion, requiring an engine rebuild estimated at approximately $4,000. The vehicle is currently inoperable and remains at the repair shop awaiting repairs. The vehicle has approximately 84,000 miles. I contacted Ford and opened a customer assistance case requesting goodwill assistance because I understand there have been widespread reports of coolant intrusion and engine failure involving the 1.5L EcoBoost engine. My request was denied. I am submitting this report because I believe a sudden engine failure accompanied by heavy white smoke and a flashing check engine light presents a potential safety concern and may be related to a defect affecting other vehicles with the same engine.

  20. Engine, Jul 8, 2026

The car is having coolant intrusion in the engine block, it’s misfiring and popping codes po301-po303. It’s shooting white smoke out the back.

  21. Engine, Jul 7, 2026

On 7/6/26 the car started to rough idle and engine light was coming on/off/on - so we took into the local shop and check for misfiring - mechanic opened up spark plug and scoped and immediately noticed coolant inside the cylinder #1/4. Proceed to call me and note this particular engine they have seen dozens of these issues and the engine block needs to be replaced. TSB was pulled up noting that the engines were defective from a certain period of time and Ford was replacing them. Took to dealer on 7/7/26 and they proceeded to tell me the same issue but this was out of any warranty that Ford would offer. I understand this TSB was issued in 2022 or maybe earlier as I am just gathering information at this time. I do not recall seeing a recall issued for this issue. Is this a known issue to the NHTSA ? Why has a recall not been issued or is their a process to have this issued ? Are there any class action lawsuits for this engine ? The obvious safety concern is an useable engine, extreme cost to replace and Ford knowing that this engine had some issues early on. The car only has 74,000 miles and I am told Ford will not warranty this. Please provide clarity on known issues and what has or has not been done about it.

  22. Engine, Jul 7, 2026

After 95000 miles engine service light came on, dealer service team says it is being caused by coolant intrusion into cylinder 1, The repair is to replace the engine block at a cost of approx. $10,000. The is a lot of information available the indicates the issue is related to a well documented design flaw in the open-deck block design used in the 2017 engine making it prone to stress fractures, erosion or cracking under the high pressure of turbocharging.

Well known issue with this 2017 Ford Escape with faulty coolant system leaking into engine cylinders causing internal engine failure. This was the formal diagnosis by a qualified repair shop on or about May 26, 2026.

  25. Engine, Jul 4, 2026

Misfire cylinders, did extensive work to the car. Replaced spark plugs, fuel pump, thermostat, etc. coolant in cylinder walls. Evidence internal engine failure. Cracked block
