Recalls and investigations

  1. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, evaporative emissions, canisterJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Focus vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 18V735. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving.

An engine that stalls while driving increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 29, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S40. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6,2026.

  2. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.

  3. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  4. Fuel system, gasoline, storageJul 5, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012 and 2017 Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI gasoline engines and 2013-2014 Focus ST vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines, previously recalled under 18V-735. The affected vehicles did not have the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) updated as intended. Therefore, the Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system.

The excessive vacuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began July 29, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S22.

  5. Fuel system, gasoline, storageOct 22, 2018

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles with a 2.0L GDI or 2.0L GTDI engine. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system.

The excessive vaccuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Ford Customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S32. 6. Latches/locks/linkages, hatchback/liftgate, lockSep 28, 2016

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2017 Ford Focus hatchback vehicles manufactured February 14, 2012, to August 26, 2016 and equipped with a manual transmission. The hatchback of the affected vehicles may be unlatched with a single press of the interior latch release button. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."

With only a single press needed, the driver may accidently unlatch the hatchback, increasing the risk of injury to any unsecured passengers in the back.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Body Control Module with updated software, free of charge. The recall began February 10, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16C13.

A component within the door latches may break, preventing the doors from latching and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the door latches with an improved part, free of charge. The recall began on January 27, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S30.

  8. Electrical system, wiringDec 2, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured January 11, 2012, to April 1, 2013, and 2013-2014 Focus ST vehicles manufactured May 03, 2012, to October 14, 2013. Insufficient compression in the engine wiring harness splices to the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor may provide incorrect signals to the powertrain control module (PCM).

The incorrect signals could cause the vehicle to hesitate or the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the current crimped splices with new splices, free of charge. The recall began on January 7, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S17-S1.

  10. Exterior lightingAug 1, 2013

Ford is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Focus BEV vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, manufactured September 15, 2011, through May 6, 2013; and model year 2013 Focus ST vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, manufactured February 16, 2012, through May 7, 2013. Due to a wiring incompatability, the front side marker lamps may not function. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Without the proper illumination of the side maker lamps, the vehicle may be less visible in night time conditions, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will modify the headlamp assembly wiring, free of charge. The recall began on August 16, 2013. Owners may contact the Ford customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's recall number is 13C04.

  11. Latches/locks/linkagesMar 7, 2013

Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Focus and C-Max vehicles built from November 16, 2012, through November 21, 2012; and model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from November 14, 2012, through November 21, 2012. The left rear door child lock was built incorrectly. As a result, the child lock may not engage when the operator uses normal force to activate the child lock.

The operator may incorrectly believe the child lock is engaged. However, the door may be opened from the inside, increasing the risk of injury to an unrestrained child.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected rear door latches, and replace them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on March 27, 2013. Owners may contact Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332.

  12. EquipmentOct 2, 2012

This recall involves aftermarket parts sold by Yakima Products, Inc. for use on model year 2012 and 2013 Ford Focus vehicles. This recall is being conducted by Yakima, not by Ford. Certain combined Q-Tower and Q128 Clip rooftop rack systems, part numbers 8000124 and 8000728, do not fully contact the door frame.

Without proper contact of the rooftop rack clip to the door frame, there is insufficient clamping pressure and friction. The system may slide off the vehicle when loaded with accessories, possibly becoming a road hazard to other vehicles or causing injury to pedestrians.

Yakima will notify owners, and Yakima or a Yakima dealer will refund the purchase of the Q-Tower and Q-128 Clip system. There is no replacement system available for the 2012-2013 model year Ford Focus. The safety recall began on October 15, 2012. Only vehicles equipped with the vehicle rack system are affected. This recall is being conducted by Yakima, not Ford. Owners may contact Yakima at 1-888-925-4621.

  1. Steering, Power train, Fuel/propulsion system, Oct 22, 2018

MANY PEOPLE ARE AWARE OF THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE PROBLEM WITH THE 2013 FORD FOCUS THAT HAS BEEN RECALLED. HOWEVER, I HAVE HAD ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH MY FORD FOCUS THAT I RESEARCHED AND FOUND THAT MANY MORE PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME OR SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH THEIR FUEL TANK COLLAPSING AND NEEDING TO REPLACE MOST OF THE COMPONENTS IN THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. I HAD THE PURGE VALVE REPLACED AS AN OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE AS MY EXTENDED WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED, HOPING THIS WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. I WAS INFORMED BY THE MECHANIC THAT TO FIX MY CAR COMPLETELY, IT WOULD MOST LIKELY NEED A NEW FUEL TANK, FUEL PUMP, FUEL FILTER, FUEL LINE AND OF COURSE THE PURGE VALVE ( WHICH I HAD REPLACED ). MY CAR IS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD AND I DO NOT KNOW HOW OR WHY I NEED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. I HAVE SEEN MANY POSTS DESCRIBING THE SAME SITUATION ON CARCOMPLAINTS.COM AND KNOW OF SOMEONE LOCALLY WHO I KNOW PERSONALLY WHO HAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR 2013 FORD FOCUS. WHEN DRIVING, MY ENGINE WILL SHUT OFF COMPLETELY. FROM TIME TO TIME, MY OIL LIGHT WILL COME ON AS MY ENGINE STALLS OUT AND TRIES TO 'DIE' AND I CAN PRESS THE GAS TO 'REVIVE' THE ENGINE AND KEEP IT FROM SHUTTING OFF. THIS REPAIR OF THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS ESTIMATED TO COST $2,000 TO REPAIR AND I JUST DON'T HAVE IT. I LISTED MY CAR ONLINE FOR $5,400 AS IS AND HAVE NO ONE INTERESTED IN IT AT THAT PRICE AFTER I'VE INVESTED NEARLY $20,000 IN THIS CAR IN THE 4 YEARS I'VE BEEN MAKING PAYMENTS, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS ON IT. I'VE ALSO HAD THE POWER STEERING REPLACED ON THIS VEHICLE WHEN I HAD AROUND 80,000 MILES ON IT. THE POWER STEERING FAILED WHILE IN MOTION AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE IS A DANGEROUS ONE. BUYER BEWARE.

  2. Power train, Oct 21, 2018

TRANSMISSION SHIFTING ISSUES. THIS TRANSMISSION STARTED ACTING UP AND STAYING IN FIRST GEAR TO LONG, AND THEN WHEN IT DOES FINALLY SHIFT, IT SKIPS GEARS AND GOES DIRECTLY INTO HIGH GEAR. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 77,356 MILES ON IT. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL TRANSMISSION. WHAT ACTION DOES A CONSUMER HAVE WITH A VEHICLE THAT HAS KNOWN ISSUES? THERE HAS BEEN NO OFFICIAL RECALL ON THIS MODEL, ALTHOUGH THE ISSUE IS WELL KNOWN AMONG FOCUS OWNERS, AND A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT HAS BEEN INITIATED.

  3. Steering, Oct 18, 2018

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD FOCUS. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL STALLED AND THE STEERING WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. 7. Power train, Oct 14, 2018

I HAVE HAD MY FORD FOCUS IN EIGHT TIMES FOR A TRANSMISSION SHUDDER. THE FIX WORKS FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THEN REAPPEARS. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE HESITATION HAPPENS UPON ACCELERATING AND MERGING ONTO HIGHWAY OR INTO TRAFFIC. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND WAS BASICALLY TOLD THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO FOR ME. I AM A INGLE PARENT THAT BOUGHT A BRAND NEW CAR SO I DID NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ISSUES AND SAFETY OF MY FAMILY. I NEVER GOT THE NEW CAR REASSURANCE AND WORRY THAT THIS SHUDDER WILL HAPPEN AT A TIME WHERE IT PUT US AND OTHERS IN DANGER.THE PO BOX ADDRESS ON THE WEBSITE IS ALSO INCORRECT

  8. Fuel/propulsion system, Oct 13, 2018

THIS CAR'S FUEL GAUGE READS IN ERROR. CAR RUNS OUT OF GAS EVEN THOUGH THE FUEL GAUGE READS OVER 100 MILES TO EMPTY. IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME 3 TIMES BEFORE I REALIZED EXACTLY WHAT WAS HAPPENING. TWICE ON THE INTERSTATE AT 70MPH. MY CAR JUST DIEDZ THE GAS GAUGE SHOWED AMPLE GAS WHEN THE CAR WAS NEARLY EMPTY. IT WAS VERY SCARY. TO SIMPLY HAVE THE ENGINE DIE AND COST THRU TRAFFIC TO THE SHOULDER. MY CAR HAS ONLY 28000 MILES ON IT. THE DEALERSHIP TELLS ME A SENSOR FAILED, THE TANK IS WARPED AND THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $2300. IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY AS THE CAR IS OLDER THAN 5 YEARS.

  9. Air bags, Oct 6, 2018, crash

'TAKATA RECALL' I HAVE A 2013 FORD FOCUS SE HATCHBACK. I WAS RECENTLY INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT HEAD ON AND ONLY ONE AIRBAG ENGAGED. IT ENGAGED FROM UNDERNEATH THE DASHBOARD ON THE DRIVING SEAT OF THE VEHICLE... ~

  10. Seat belts, Oct 3, 2018

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD FOCUS. WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT UNINTENTIONALLY UNLATCHED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 193,000.

  11. Steering, Oct 2, 2018

ABOUT 5 MONTHS AGO, UPON STARTING MY CAR AFTER BEING LEFT OVERNIGHT RECEIVED AN ERROR MESSAGE OF "STEERING ASSIST FAULT" AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO TURN. I TURNED IT OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND THE ERROR MESSAGE WAS GONE AND THE STEERING WAS NORMAL AGAIN. THIS WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN TWICE OVER THE NEXT 5 MONTHS BUT IT ALWAYS CORRECTED ITSELF ONCE I RESTARTED THE CAR. EARLIER THIS WEEK THE ERROR CAME ON AGAIN BUT WOULDN'T GO AWAY AND MY STEERING WHEEL WAS DIFFICULT TO TURN. WITH DIFFICULTY I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE AFTER SEVERAL DAYS I WAS TOLD THE ENTIRE STEERING RACK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS CAR IS LESS THAN 5 YEARS OLD AND HAS JUST SHY OF 78,000 MILES ON IT.

  12. Power train, Oct 1, 2018

I HAVE HAD THIS CAR BACK TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES. I BELIEVE ITS AT NUMBER 12 NOW. I'VE HAD THE TRANSMISSION CLUTCHES REPLACED 2 TIMES, PROGRAMMED SEVERAL TIMES AND THE DRIVER PREDICTOR COMPUTER TWO TIMES. THE DANGER OF THE PRODUCT STILL AFTER ALL THIS IS THAT WHEN I PULL ONTO THE ROAD IT JERKS, HESITATES AND AT TIMES LOSES POWER BEFORE SURGING FORWARD. IT CAN BE WHILE I'M STARTING OUT AT A RED LIGHT OR PULLING OUT ONTO MAIN 70 MILE AN HOUR HIGHWAY. AT ONE TIME WHEN DRIVER PREDICTOR WENT OUT, IT STALLED ON THE MAIN HIGHWAY AND I HAD TO DRIFT INTO THE PARKING LOT WITH A LOCKED UP STEERING WHEEL. I LIVE IN A SMALL COMMUNITY AND THERE ARE 3 OTHER RESIDENTS THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I TRANSPORT MY GRANDCHILDREN IN THIS AUTO AND I LACK CONFIDENCE EVERY TIME I PULL OUT. THIS IS AN EXTREME HAZARD AND FORD CAN'T SEEM TO FIX IT.

  13. Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 28, 2018

WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM A VACATION IN FLORIDA ON 9-15-18 (SATURDAY), I WAS DRIVING I75N IN THE THIRD OF FOUR LANES GOING 75-80 MPH. SUDDENLY MY CAR SLOWED DOWN ABRUPTLY, I HELD THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR BUT THE CAR CONTINUED TO LOSE SPEED. I QUICKLY TURNED ON MY EMERGENCY FLASHERS AND TURN SIGNAL TO GET OVER TWO LANES INTO THE BERM. THANKFULLY I WAS NOT HIT BY THE 80 MPH TRAFFIC SPEEDING BY. ONCE IN THE BERM, THE CAR JUST DIED. IT WOULD NOT TURN ON AGAIN. MY LIGHTS ALL ILLUMINATED, THE GAS LIGHT, THE BATTERY LIGHT, THE SEATBELT LIGHT AND THE OIL LIGHT, A CLICKING NOISE WAS ALSO HEARD. IT WAS 95 DEGREES THAT DAY IN FLORIDA AND I WAS TRAVELING WITH MY SISTER AND MY THREE DOGS. MY DOGS ARE FLAT FACED DOGS WHO CANNOT TOLERATE HEAT. THEY QUICKLY DECLINED AND WERE IN THE PROCESS OF HEAT STROKE AS WE WERE WAITING FOR HELP TO ARRIVE FOR US. WE DID EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO KEEP THEM COOL WITHOUT THE AIR CONDITIONING WORKING, BUT IT WAS FAILING. WE DID MANAGED TO GET HELP FROM A SEMI TRUCK DRIVER WHO ALLOWED US TO SIT IN HIS AIR CONDITIONED CAB, FINALLY THE DOGS WERE SAFE. WE WAITED FOR THE STATE HWY PATROL AND THE TOW TRUCK. THE TOW TRUCK TOWED MY CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP ABOUT 25 MINUTES AWAY. THE REPAIR SHOP WAS NOT OPEN UNTIL THE FOLLOWING DAY SO WE WERE FORCED TO GET A HOTEL ROOM FOR THE NIGHT. SUNDAY AT NOON, THEY OPENED. TWO AND 1/2 HOURS LATER, THEY CALLED ME TO TELL ME I HAD SIMPLY RUN OUT OF GAS. MY CAR'S GAUGES TOLD ME THAT I HAD 45 MILES TO EMPTY AND 1/4 TANK OF GAS IN THE VEHICLE, SO OBVIOUSLY THIS WAS NOT CORRECT. WE WERE TERRIFIED AND WERE PUT INTO A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. WE ALL COULD HAVE DIED WHEN THE CAR STOPPED IN TRAFFIC AND MY PETS FROM THE HEAT. A RECALL NEEDS TO BE MADE ON THIS PROBLEM AS I HAVE READ MANY ACCOUNTS OF OTHERS WHO HAVE LIVED THROUGH IT AS WELL.

  14. Steering, Power train, Sep 24, 2018

BOUGHT THIS CAR - HAD LESS THAN 2 YEARS AND THE TRANSMISSION FAILED TWICE. THE TRANSMISSION ISSUES WERE COVERED UNDER A RECALL. STEERING ASSIST FAULT/MALFUNCTION WAS HAPPENING. YOU'D SHUT THE CAR OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON AND IT WOULD FIX ITSELF. THE STEERING ASSIST FAULT COME ONE WHILE MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING AND SHE COULD NO LONGER STEER THE VEHICLE. THANK GOD SHE WASN'T INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT AND WAS CLOSE TO OUR HOUSE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A WELL-KNOWN DEFECT IN THE FORD CARS AND FORD IS OFFERING NO HELP TO FIX THE ISSUES. THEY ARE GOING TO GET SUED BECAUSE, SADLY, THIS DEFECT IS GOING TO END UP KILLING SOMEONE. THEY ARE LUCKY MY DAUGHTER WASN'T HURT. THIS STEERING ISSUE SHOULD BE RECALLED. LIVES ARE AT RISK AND NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE (ESPECIALLY FORD!). NOW FORD WANTS $2,500 TO FIX THIS DEFECT. I DON'T THINK SO! FORD WILL NOT GET ANOTHER RED CENT FROM ME, EVER! THEIR STEERING DEFECT COULD HAVE COST MY DAUGHTER HER LIFE! I'M READY FOR A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. I'M READY TO FIGHT! WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO GET THIS DEFECT RECALLED? AN INNOCENT LIFE, MAYBE TWO? WHAT? EVERYONE IS PUT ON NOTICE THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS MALFUNCTION WITH THIS CAR AND I KNOW FORD ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT IT. THEY'VE HAD ISSUES WITH STEERING IN THEIR OTHER VEHICLES THAT HAVE BEEN RECALLED AND THEY'VE HAD 100S+ (IF NOT MORE) OF COMPLAINTS WITH THIS VEHICLE IN PARTICULAR REGARDING THE STEERING. FORD TURNING A BLIND EYE IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!
