Recalls and investigations

  1. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, evaporative emissions, canisterJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Focus vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 18V735. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving.

An engine that stalls while driving increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 29, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S40. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6,2026.

  2. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.

  3. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  4. Fuel system, gasoline, storageJul 5, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012 and 2017 Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI gasoline engines and 2013-2014 Focus ST vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines, previously recalled under 18V-735. The affected vehicles did not have the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) updated as intended. Therefore, the Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system.

The excessive vacuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began July 29, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S22.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2017 Ford Focus hatchback vehicles manufactured February 14, 2012, to August 26, 2016 and equipped with a manual transmission. The hatchback of the affected vehicles may be unlatched with a single press of the interior latch release button. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."

With only a single press needed, the driver may accidently unlatch the hatchback, increasing the risk of injury to any unsecured passengers in the back.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Body Control Module with updated software, free of charge. The recall began February 10, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16C13.

Representative owner complaints: fuel/propulsion system

309 reports, newest first. Show all

  1. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Oct 26, 2015

CAR INTERMITTENTLY STALLS WHEN THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. THIS CAN OCCUR AT A STOPLIGHT OR AT FREEWAY SPEED.

  2. Electrical system, Fuel/propulsion system, Oct 26, 2015

THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY WITH NO POWER. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AND DISPLAYED A YELLOW TOOL WRENCH THAT READ 'SEE MANUAL' AND THEN WOULD CHANGE TO A YELLOW TRIANGLE WITH A RED EXCLAMATION MARK THAT READ 'STOP VEHICLE SAFELY.' HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO AV FORD AND THEY HAVE BEEN NOTHING BUT UNHELPFUL. THEY STATE IT'S WATER INTRUSION TO THE CONNECTORS AND IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE MANUFACTURE WARRANTY AND TO FILE A CLAIM WITH MY AUTO INSURANCE COMPANY. THEY CANNOT PROVIDE ANY DIAGNOSTIC TESTING TO CONCLUDE THEIR WATER INTRUSION TO THE CONNECTOR'S THEORY. WE HAD A RAINSTORM THE DAY BEFORE I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN TO THEM. THEY ARE USING WATER INTRUSION DAMAGE AS A SCAPEGOAT TO FIXING THE REAL ISSUE WHICH IS A DEFECT TO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. FORD DID HOWEVER PROVIDE ME A WRITTEN ESTIMATE OF REPAIR FOR $33,160.42. THIS IS ABSURD AND IS MORE THAN THE CAR IS EVEN WORTH. THESE CARS CONTINUE TO HAVE THIS ISSUE DESPITE OF THE RECALL THEY HAD FOR THIS PROBLEM. FORD FOCUS ELECTRIC VEHICLES THAT WERE NOT PART OF THE ORIGINAL RECALL IN NOVEMBER 2013 ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER BECAUSE THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN FIXED.

  3. Power train, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Oct 23, 2015

CAR JERKS AND SHAKES. ESPECIALLY WHEN TAKING OFF OR ON TURNING VEHICLE JERKS BADLY. I UNDERSTAND THAT IS WHEN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS TRYING TO SHIFT GEARS. I HAVE HAD THE CLUTCH REPLACED ONCE ALREADY. THIS CAUSES A HUGE DANGER TO ME BECAUSE IF I WOULD LIKE TO TRY TO MAKE A LEFT TURN IN FRONT OF TRAFFIC I NEVER KNOW IF MY CAR WILL GO OR RESIST. SONS DAYS ARE SO BAD THAT I JUST GIVE UP DRIVING BECAUSE IT FEELS AS IF MY CAR WILL STALL. THIS IS NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT A CAR THAT YOU'VE BOUGHT NEW AND PAID THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON TO RUN LIKE DAILY. DEALERSHIP, TODAY, SAYS IT'S FINE. INITIAL ISSUES DATE BACK TO AUGUST 2014.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 FORD FOCUS. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE VEHICLE HESITATED TO ACCELERATE WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS RECENTLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V005000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE); HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000.

  6. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 24, 2015

ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2015, WHILE MY SON WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 65 MPH IN THE CARPOOL LANE, THE CAR SUDDENLY STALLED ON HIM AND LOSS ALL POWER TO THE CAR. A MESSAGE POPPED UP ON THE DASH IN AN ORANGE TRIANGLE STATED "STOP SAFELY NOW". SINCE HE WAS IN THE CARPOOL LANE, HE DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET THE CAR OFF TO THE SIDE. HE WAS STRANDED IN A BUSY CARPOOL LANE AND ALMOST GOT REAR END FROM BEHIND WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY CUT OFF ALL POWER AND CAME TO A STOP. THIS HAS PUT MY SON IN A GREAT DANGER SITUATION!!! HE COULD HAVE GOT REAR ENDED AND THE STALLING OF THE CAR COULD HAVE CAUSED A MULTI-CARS ACCIDENT IN THE CARPOOL LANE ON THE FREEWAY. SOMEHOW HE MANAGED TO ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AFTER TURNING THE CAR ON, OFF AND OPENING THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR AND CLOSING IT SEVERAL TIME. THE CAR CONTINUE TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ON AND OFF FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. WE FINALLY GOT THE CAR INTO FORD DEALERSHIP SEPTEMBER 24, 2015. AT THE TIME OF THIS REPORT, FORD DEALERSHIP HAS NOT CALL ME WITH A CAUSE FOR THE ISSUE. I ALSO NOTED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR A SIMILAR ISSUE THAT WAS ISSUED FROM FORD FOR THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE FOR MODEL 2012 TO 2014. THE SERVICEMAN AT FORD DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT ON THAT RECALL LIST YET MY SON STILL ENCOUNTERED THE SAME ISSUE THAT WAS DESCRIBED IN THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION REPORT A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. I DONT THINK FORD HAS DONE ENOUGH TO CORRECT THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM.

  7. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 23, 2015

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 FORD FOCUS. WHILE AT A STOP, THE VEHICLE SHOOK WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS APPLIED. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE JERKED BEFORE ACCELERATING. THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO RESET THE COMPUTER AND REPLACED THE FUEL MODULE, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,200.

  8. Power train, Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 17, 2015

AFTER COMPLETING A STOP, WHEN PRESSING GAS PEDAL, CAR/TRANSMISSION STUTTERS THEN JERKS FORWARD. I'VE TRIED ACCELERATING MORE SLOWLY AND THEN TRIED IT FASTER WITH MORE GAS, BUT IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. THE CAR WON'T ACCELERATE FAST ENOUGH TO SAFELY MAKE TURNS BEFORE ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I'VE HAD THIS NEW CAR 11 MONTHS.

  9. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 15, 2015

"STOP SAFELY NOW" WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AT ~18K MILES, 17 MONTHS INTO OWNERSHIP, WHILE DRIVING ON EXPRESS WAY AT ~35 MPH. CAR POWERED OFF AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AT NEXT STOPLIGHT, WAS STRANDED BEFORE INTERSECTION. CAR DID POWER UP AGAIN AND WAS DRIVEABLE AFTER OPENING AND CLOSING DRIVER DOOR, WAITING SEVERAL MINUTES, AND TURNED POWER OFF AND ON.

  10. Electronic stability control (ESC), Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 5, 2015

FIRST INCIDENT CAR WOULDN'T START, 2ND INCIDENT TOOK CAR IN FOR LURCHING, SHUDDERING, 3RD INCIDENT ROLLING BACK (CAR STILL SHUDDERING) THEY SAID THIS WAS WITHIN NORMAL SPECS. 4TH INCIDENT HAVE BEEN IGNORING IT (BECAUSE IT IS NORMAL??!!) ... STILL SHUDDERING, LURCHING ON TAKE OFF FROM A STOP, ALSO TIRES ARE MAKING A "TIRE SOUND" SECONDARY TO TRANSMISSION (MOST LIKELY DUE TO TRANSMISSION ISSUES)... BOYFRIEND AND PEP BOYS SAY THIS IS NOT NORMAL THAT ITS THE TRANSMISSION. TAKING IT BACK IN ON THE 15TH OF SEPT. 2015, VERY FRUSTRATING. HAVING BOYFRIEND TAKE IT BACK IN BECAUSE WE BELIEVE THAT AUTOMOTIVE IS STILL A SEXIST INDUSTRY. HAVE 2 CASE NUMBERS GIVEN TO ME. CERTAIN IT IS A LEMON, NOT SURE WHERE TO GO FROM HERE. HATE MY CAR.

  11. Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 5, 2015

MY DAUGHTER'S FORD FOCUS SHUDDERS AND HESITATES WHEN SWITCHING FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR. IT IS AN AUTOMATIC, BUT HAS SOME SORT OF INTERNAL CLUTCH OR SIMILAR DEVICE ACCORDING TO FORD. IT HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR A FEW MONTHS AND WAS TAKEN INTO THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR ON JUNE 10. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY HAD TO ORDER THE PART AND THAT IT WAS ON BACK ORDER. THEY ARE TELLING US ALMOST 2 MONTHS LATER THAT IT IS STILL ON BACK ORDER WITH NO PROJECTED SHIP DATE. IT IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION TO HAVE A CAR THAT HESITATES DURING ACCELERATION, AND I'M CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY DAUGHTER AND GRANDDAUGHTER WHEN THEY ARE IN THIS VEHICLE. ATTEMPTS TO ESCALATE THIS TO FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS HAVE RESULTED IN NO NEW INFORMATION, NO PROJECTED RESOLUTION AND NO ONE AT FORD CORPORATE TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT I HAVE INDICATED IS A SAFETY ISSUE. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THERE ARE STEPS THAT NHTSA CAN TAKE TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION.

THIS VEHICLE HAS TROUBLE ACCELERATING. WHEN AT A STOPPED POSITION OR DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS AND YOU TRY TO ACCELERATE THE CAR SPUTTERS, JUMPS, AND ALMOST STALLS OUT. THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND INCREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF BEING HIT FROM BEHIND BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. WE HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER THREE TIMES. THEY ARE EITHER VERY INEPT OR JUST AREN'T CONCERNED ABOUT ACTUALLY FIXING THIS ISSUE. MY DAUGHTER TOOK THE VEHICLE IN ONCE AND THEY TOLD HER SHE HAD TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE FOR 1000 MILES AND THE CAR CAR WOULD FIX ITSELF. DEATH/SAFETY RISK!! ONCE AGAIN DRIVING MY FOCUS ON RAINY WEATHER, AND IT SPUTTERED AND STALLED. HAD TO PULL OFF TO THE SHOULDER TO AVOID SERIOUS REAR END COLLISION. CAR WOULD NOT START FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 MIN. FINALLY STARTED AND ROUGHLY IDLED ENOUGH TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY SHOULDER. VERY FRUSTRATING. ESPECIALLY AFTER SPENDING APPX $1300.00 TO GET THIS REPAIRED AND SUPPOSEDLY 100% FIXED. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE- NEVER BUYING A FORD AGAIN. GLAD MY WIFE OR DAUGHTER WASN'T DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. NHTSA PLEASE MAKE FORD RECOGNIZE THIS ISSUE AND FIX IT!! CONTACT ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS - AS A QUALITY ENGINEER IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY, I KNOW THIS IS WRONG!! A POTENTIAL WALK CONDITION IS THE WORST CONDITION FROM A SAFETY STANCE. *TR

  21. Steering, Service brakes, Fuel/propulsion system, Apr 14, 2015

THIS MODEL HAS A "STICKY" STEERING WHEEL THAT WILL NOT ALWAYS RETURN TO THE NEUTRAL POSITION WITH OUT DRIVER ASSISTANCE AND NEEDS TO BE CONSTANTLY ADJUSTED TO KEEP THE VEHICLE DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE. YOU CAN ACTUALLY LET GO OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE GOING AROUND A GRADUAL CURVE IN THE ROAD AND THE CAR WILL FOLLOW THE CURVE THE WHOLE WAY WITHOUT BREAKING ITS ARCH. IT ALSO SUFFERS FROM DANGEROUS "TORQUE STEERING" WHICH CAUSES THE VEHICLE STEERING TO LOSE CONTROL WHEN YOU ACCELERATE AGGRESSIVELY. IN ADDITION, THE ELECTRIC STEERING REACTS POORLY WITH THE REGENERATIVE BREAKING. IF YOU NEED TO BREAK HARD, THE STEERING WILL SWERVE DANGEROUSLY AND INHIBIT DRIVER CONTROL. I'VE APPROACHED FORD ABOUT THIS AND TAKEN TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY SAY THAT'S JUST THE WAY THE CAR IS. I'VE TALKED TO OTHER OWNERS OF THIS TYPE OF CAR AND NOT ALL BUT A GOOD PORTION HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS. ONE MAN EVEN SAID HE'S AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR 1. FOR SAFETY, BUT 2. BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE DRIVING DRUNK BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO CONSTANTLY ADJUST THE STEERING JUST TO KEEP THE CAR IN LINE - LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE SWERVING. LASTLY, THE MILEAGE THEY SAY YOU CAN GET FROM A CHARGE ISN'T ACCURATE AND THEIR APP DOESN'T WORK IN ALL LOCATIONS. NEITHER OF WHICH THEY DISCLOSED BEFORE I LEASED THIS CAR. WHILE DRIVING CAR SUDDENLY BEGAN TO LOOSE RPM, MOTOR QUIT RUNNING, COULD NOT RESTART. VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED. I WAS TOLD THE MOTOR WAS BAD AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED, THE NEXT DAY WAS TOLD THE FUEL PUMP WAS BAD AND WAS ALL THAT WAS NEEDED REPLACED, THEN WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY "BAD FUEL" AND NOT COVERED BY MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. I GET GASOLINE AT SAME PLACE, THEY TELL ME THERE HAVE BEEN NO OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT PROBLEMS WITH FUEL. ONLY LAST MONTH I NOTICED OIL ON SIDES OF CAR AND THE WATER PUMP WAS REPLACED, WAS TOLD BY MECHANIC AT FORD THAT THE "OIL AND WATER WERE MIXING". ALL THIS SOUNDS A LITTLE TOO WEIRD TO BE HAPPENING TO A 2014 VEHICLE AND I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT HAVING TO SPEND OVER $500 TO REPAIR A CAR THIS NEW. *TR
