Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S43. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6,2026.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Focus vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 18V735. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving.

An engine that stalls while driving increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 29, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S40. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6,2026.

  3. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. 4. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  5. Fuel system, gasoline, storageOct 22, 2018

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles with a 2.0L GDI or 2.0L GTDI engine. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system.

The excessive vaccuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Ford Customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S32. Note: Until the vehicle is serviced for this concern, owners are advised to keep the fuel tank at least halfway full.

Also included are four 2017 Ford Focus vehicles that had clutch replacements with potentially affected parts. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the Focus vehicles with software that detects and prevents prolonged clutch slip, and will replace the clutch, as necessary, free of charge. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2017 Ford Focus hatchback vehicles manufactured February 14, 2012, to August 26, 2016 and equipped with a manual transmission. The hatchback of the affected vehicles may be unlatched with a single press of the interior latch release button. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."

With only a single press needed, the driver may accidently unlatch the hatchback, increasing the risk of injury to any unsecured passengers in the back.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Body Control Module with updated software, free of charge. The recall began February 10, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16C13.

A component within the door latches may break, preventing the doors from latching and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

2015 FORD FOCUS HAS SEVERE SHUDDERING AND HARD SHIFTING AFTER STOPPING. WHEN FIRST MOVING FROM A STOP SIGN OR STOP LIGHT THE VEHICLE SHUDDERS AND SHIFTS HARD. FORD TOLD ME THAT THE ONLY THING I CAN DO IS TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA

FIRST, FROM A FULL STOPPED OR STATIONARY POSITION THEN ACCELERATING OR IN MOTION THE CAR STARTED TO PUTTING OR SLIPPING WITH THIS AUTO TRANSMISSION GEAR OR WAS HAVING A ISSUE SHIFTING FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR WHILE DRIVING OR HESITATING BADLY, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, I GOT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CHECKED BY AUTO ZONE AND A PERSONAL MECHANIC AND THE HAND HELD DEVICE SHOWED EACH TIME "NO DATA FOUND" HMMM, SECOND, WHILE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND PLACING THE CAR IN PARK, I THEN HAD TO PLACE THE CAR IN REVERSE AND THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE IN THE REVERSE POSITION! BUT AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF IN THE PARK POSITION AND LETTING IT SET FOR 5-10 MINS, THE CAR STARTED AND I PLACED IT IN THE REVERSE POSITION AND IT WORKED HMMM. AND THESE TWO ISSUES HAS HAPPENED TO MANY TIMES (6) FOR ME TO FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE WHILE MERGING INTO HIGHWAY TRAFFIC AND DRIVING IN CITY STOP AND GO TRAFFIC NOW OR AT THIS TIME AND I'AM TAKING IT TO A FORD DEALER TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM TODAY. NOTE: I ONLY HAVE PICTURES OF WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN MY CELL PHONE WITH THE DIFFERENT MILEAGE WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON.

  3. Power train, Other or unspecified, Engine, Jul 14, 2019

THE CAR SHUDDERED AND JERKED WHEN STOPPED AND ON ACCELERATION FROM A STOP. A METAL GRINDING CAN BE HEARD FROM THE ENGINE WHILE DRIVING DURING THIS JERKING FROM ACCELERATION. THE CAR WOULD LOSE POWER WHILE DRIVING. ONE TIME, THE CAR STALLED, RESULTING IN LOSE OF POWER, WHILE I WAS TURNING LEFT THROUGH AN INTERSECTION. I HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR MANY TIMES WITH NO RESOLUTION OF THESE SYMPTOMS.

  4. Other or unspecified, Jul 14, 2019

A/C SOMETIMES REDUCES TO ALMOST NO AIR AND LITTLE COOLING, DEALER SAYS THE A/C CONDENSOR IS FREEZING INTO A BLOCK OF ICE DUE TO FAILING SENSOR(S), BUT THE COMPUTER DOES NOT STORE A CODE SO THEY WON'T REPLACE ANY SENSORS UNTIL THE A/C FAILS AND I BRING IT IN WHILE IT IS IN FAILURE MODE!!! REALLY CONVENIENT IN THE NO. CAL. SUMMER OF 100 PLUS DEGREE HEAT!!!! THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING SINCE 2017 WITH NO REPAIRS MADE!!!

ADDITIONALLY, THIS SAME CAR HAS THE AIR CONDITIONING THAT WENT OUT. I AM TOLD ITS THE AIR COMPRESSOR WHICH IS EXPENSIVE. THE REAR CAMERA IS BROKEN AS WELL FOR NO OBVIOUS REASON. THAT WENT OUT IN THE FIRST YEAR. I TOOK IT IN AND WAS TOLD THE CAUSE WAS UNKNOWN. THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE.

  10. Power train, Jul 12, 2019

I PURCHASED MY CAR NEW FROM RYAN FORD IN SEALY TX AND IMMEDIATELY STARTED HAVING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. I TOOK MY CAR BACK AND THEY ADJUSTED MY CLUTCH. THAT SAME DAY, THE CAR MADE A LOUD NOISE AND FELT LIKE THE BOTTOM WAS COMING OUT AS I WAS DRIVING ON THE TOLL. I TOOK MY CAR BACK AGAIN AND THEY KEPT MY CAR FOR A WEEK. THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. FAST FORWARD, I CONTACTED FORD AND THEY ASKED ME TO CALL FORD RELATIONS. I TOLD FORD RELATIONS THAT IT WAS JERKING AND HESITATING. SO I TOOK MY CAR TO AUTONATION FORD HERE IN KATY, TX. THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY AND THE CLUTCH. I TOOK MY CAR BACK TO AUTONATION FORD AND EXPLAINED TO THE TRANSMISSION GENTLEMAN THAT MY DAD AND MY BOYFRIEND HAD DRIVEN MY CAR AND SAID THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING. THE SERVICE MAN DROVE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, NOTTINGHAM, AND SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. SO I THEN RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE AND I CALLED TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT AND THE LADY WHO SCHEDULES APPOINTMENTS TOLD ME THAT MY CAR WILL ALWAYS HAVE "SHUTTERING" PROBLEMS NOT MATTER HOW MANY ADJUSTMENTS OR HOW MANY TIMES THEY CHANGE MY CLUTCH. SHE SAID FORD HAS EXTENDED THEIR WARRANTY TO I BELIEVE 60K MILES. MY FIRST BRAND NEW CAR WAS A FORD EXPLORER SPORT WHICH I LOVED. I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM. I HAVE PURCHASED 2 FORD EXPLORERS, A F150, A FOCUS (BUT I DID NOT HAVE A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM), AND I LEASED A FLEX. MY CAR HAS UNDER 40K MILES AND I AM VERY FRUSTRATED THAT THE CAR WILL ALWAYS HAVE A PROBLEM. I FINANCED $25K AND I AM READY TO DROP OFF MY CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE KEYS! I DO NOT WANT TO PUT ANYMORE MONEY INTO THIS CAR!!!!! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD AGAIN. I FILED A CLAIM WITH FORD BUT THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE I WAITED TOO LONG. NOBODY EVER TOLD ME THAT WHAT WAS REALLY GOING ON WITH THE CLUTCH. THEY MADE ME FEEL TO BE A STUPID LADY. I WILL SEND FURTHER DOCUMENTATION.

  13. Structure, Jul 12, 2019

OUR DAUGHTER'S TRUNK ON HER 2015 FORD FOCUS HATCHBACK WILL NOT OPEN, THERE IS NO EMERGENCY RELEASE IN THE TRUNK SPACE TO RELEASE THE TRUNK THAT IS REQUIRED BY A 2001 LAW. TOOK THE CAR TO AN AUTO BODY SHOP AND THEY WERE CONFUSED AND TOLD US THEY COULD TRY TO OPEN IT, BUT COULD NOT GIVE US A GUARANTEE. FORD DEALERSHIP TELLS US THERE SHOULD BE AN EMERGENCY RELEASE, THAT WE NEED TO BRING THE CAR IN. WE CAN CLEARLY SEE IN THE BACK OF THE CAR THAT NO SUCH GLOW IN THE DARK PIECE IS THERE. I CALLED FORD CORPORATE AND THEY SAID IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE OUR VEHICLE HAS THE EMERGENCY RELEASE. I READ THE DESCRIPTION ON THE NTSB WEBSITE ABOUT PASSENGER VEHICLES WITH TRUNKS BEING REQUIRED TO HAVE IT. HOW DO WE PROCEED TO MAKE CERTAIN OUR DAUGHTER'S VEHICLE IS SAFE AND THAT THE TRUNK IS USABLE?

  14. Power train, Jul 12, 2019

EXTREME SHAKING WHILE STOPPING AND STARTING TO ACCELERATE, WILL SOMETIMES SUDDENLY START TO MOVE FORWARD AT A STOP WITH BRAKE LIGHTLY APPLIED, THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND HAS HAD CLUTCHES IN DPS6 TRANSMISSION REPLACED TWICE, WHILE AT OTHER TIMES DEALER INFORMED REPAIRS WERE NOT IN THE PARAMETERS OF REPAIR

  15. Power train, Jul 12, 2019

MY 2015 FORD FOCUS HAS HAD IT'S CLUTCH COMPLETELY REPLACED 2 TIMES SO FAR. OVER THE YEARS THE CAR HAS FREQUENTLY JERKED FORWARD WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A BRAKING POSITION, OFTEN TIMES MISSES GEARS WHEN ACCELERATING AND IS ALREADY IN MOTION, AND THE ENTIRE CAR NOTICEABLY SHUDDERS WHILE WAITING AT STOP LIGHTS. THE DEALER TOLD ME FOR YEARS THAT THESE WERE ALL NORMAL CAR OCCURRENCES AND I NEEDED TO ACCELERATE HARDER TO BREAK IN THE CAR. EVENTUALLY, ONE REP RELENTED AND EXPLAINED IT WAS A FAULTY DESIGN WITH NO SOLUTION AND THAT I'D NEED TO COME BACK IN AND HAVE THE CLUTCH REPLACED EVERY 10K MILES. UNFORTUNATELY, IT'S NOW THAT TIME AGAIN AS ALL OF THE SIGNS HAVE MANIFESTED ONCE AGAIN. SADLY, I HAVEN'T EVEN HIT 30K MILES AND A FOURTH CLUTCH IS ALREADY NEEDED.

  16. Power train, Engine, Jul 11, 2019

CAR SPUTTERS, HESITATES, MAKES CLINKING NOISES WHEN ACCELERATING. ENTIRE FRONT END INCLUDING STEERING WHEEL SHAKES AND VEHICLE HESTITATES WHEN GIVEN GAS. WHEN STOPPED CAR RANDOMLY IDLES WITHOUT USING GAS PEDAL, EVEN COMPLETELY LOSES POWER AS IF OUT OF GAS REQUIRING CAR TO BE RESTARTED. ENGINE ALSO SHIFTS GEARS LATE IN RPM SEQUENCE. I HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR OUT OF POCKET THE ISSUE RELATED TO THE GAS CYCLINDER WHICH IS THE OPEN RECALL AND THESE PROBLEMS CONTINUE TO PERSIST. PROBLEM HAS PERSISNTED EVERY DAY SINCE DATE SELECTED WHIHC IS WHEN I PURCHASED VEHICLE.

  17. Power train, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Jul 11, 2019

MY TRANSMISSION DOES NOT SHIFT PROPERLY ANS EVERYONE THAT I KNOW THAT HAS THIS SAME TYPE OF VEHICLE IS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. WHEN YOU TAKE OFF THE TRANS DOESNT SHIFT RIGHT.

  18. Power train, Jul 11, 2019

CAR HAS DELAYED QUICK ACCELERATION AND JERKING WHEN GOING FROM A STOP. WILL JERK IN ACCELERATION WHILE DRIVING AS WELL. OCCASIONALLY JERKING HAPPENS WHEN PULLING OUT FROM A PARKING LOT OR TURNING DOWN A STREET WHEN ON COMING TRAFFIC IS COMING THIS MAKES ME WORRIED BECAUSE IT COULD CAUSE A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT IF MY CAR DOES NOT GO WHEN I WANT IT TO GO AND THEN GOES WHEN IT SHOULDN'T GO. I HAVE TO LEAVE A LOT OF TIME SPACE WHEN ACCELERATING IN CERTAIN CONDITIONS. IT'S BEEN HAPPENING FOR 3 YEARS BUT HAS GOTTEN MORE AGGRESSIVE AND HASN'T CHANGED.

  20. Power train, Jul 9, 2019

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 FORD FOCUS. WHILE THE CONTACT'S SPOUSE WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SHUDDER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TIM DAHLE FORD (LOCATED AT 2534 N 200 E, SPANISH FORK, UT 84660, (801) 798-3553) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE CLUTCH IN THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V169000 (POWER TRAIN). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

  21. Steering, Jul 8, 2019

AT AROUND 70,000 MILES I COULD HEAR A SCRATCHING/RUBBING SOUND WHEN I TURNED, AROUND 70,500 I COULD HEAR IT OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. 71,000 MILES THE STEERING RACK AND PINION FAILED WHILE DRIVING. I WAS IN A CORNER AND COULD HAVE DIED.

  22. Visibility/wiper, Jul 8, 2019

WHEN I TURN ON THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS, THE WIPER BLADES SOMETIME STOP, WITH THE BLADES IN A VERTICAL POSITION OR ANOTHER ANGLE ON THE WINDSHIELD. THEY MAY REMAIN IN THAT POSITION FOR A MINUTE OR MORE. THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES WHILE DRIVING ON CITY STREETS AND ON HIGHWAYS. TO GET THE WIPERS WORKING AGAIN, I USUALLY HAVE TO TURN THE WIPER CONTROL OFF AND THEN BACK ON. DURING THIS TIME, RAIN IS ACCUMULATING ON THE WINDSHIELD, REDUCING VISIBILITY. THIS IS VERY UNSAFE. I REPORTED THE WIPER PROBLEM TO THE DEALER, BOB THOMAS FORD, 2215 DIXWELL AVENUE, HAMDEN, CONNECTICUT 06514, ON AUGUST 15, 2018, WHEN THE CAR HAD 11,122 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE DEALER DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. RECEIPT FROM THE DEALERSHIP INSPECTION STATED: "REFER TO SSM 45753." REPAIR TECHNICIAN SAID HE COULD DO NOTHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. SINCE THAT TIME, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS HAVE CONTINUED TO STOP, UNPREDICTABLY, IN A VERTICAL OR OTHER POSITION ON THE WINDSHIELD.

TAKATA RECALL MY CARS TRANSMISSION LIGHT IS ON AND A MESSAGE CAME UP SAYING TRANSMISSION AT FAULT. ALSO WHEN I WOULD STOP COMPLETELY AT A STOP SIGN OR RED LIGHT THE CAR WOULD SHUDDER AND MAKE A WEIRD NOISE. I'VE BEEN HAVE TROUBLE TURNING IT ON, I WOULD HAVE TO JUMP START IT EVERY NOW AND THEN.

  24. Steering, Jul 7, 2019

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 50 MPH THROUGH A CURVE THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING AND ALMOST CAUSED ME TO HIT THE CENTER DIVIDER. THIS IS MY DAUGHTER'S CAR AND IF SHE WAS DRIVING THE CAR SHE WOULD HAVE WRECKED. I'M A PRETTY STRONG GUY AND IT TOOK ALL OF MY STRENGTH TO TURN THE WHEEL. A POWER STEERING ASSIST WARNING CAME UP ON THE DASH. I'M TAKING THE CAR IN TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT, BUT THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS DUE TO THIS BEING A HUGE SAFETY RISK.

  25. Steering, Jul 7, 2019

TAKATA RECALL MY CAR HAS HAD MULTIPLE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND A MESSAGE ON THE CLUSTER CLAIMING A ECLECTICALLY STEERING ASSIST MALFUNCTION WHILE I AM DRIVING AT ANY SPEEDS. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND NOW THE POWER STEERING IS COMPLETELY OUT. MY CARS SUSPENSION IS 100 FACTORY OEM PARTS. WITH NO MODIFICATIONS.
