Recalls and investigations

  1. Seat belts, frontApr 8, 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.

  2. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, wheel speed sensor/tone ringOct 24, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  3. Service brakes, hydraulic, power assist, vacuumSep 6, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.

As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

  4. EquipmentApr 26, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2009-2014 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, 2009 GMC Topkick 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 Series and Isuzu F Series, and 2009-2018 Chevrolet Express, and GMC Savana vehicles, equipped with certain Plastic-Handle Fire Extinguishers or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, instructing them to contact Kidde to get a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began June 11, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Isuzu customer service at 1-866-441-9638. GM's number for this recall is 18146.

  5. Air bags, frontalJul 10, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17287.

  6. Steering, electric power assist systemJun 29, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. The vehicles may have a temporary loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist, especially during low-speed turning maneuvers.

If EPS assist is lost and then returns, the driver might lose temporary control of the steering wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the EPS module software, free of charge. The recall began on August 10, 2017. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-432-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17276.

  7. Air bags, frontalSep 8, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, 3500 HD, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles and 2014-2017 Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500, Trax, Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle, GMC Sierra 1500, Buick Encore, and 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Spark EV and SS vehicles. In the affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test.

The recall began on October 13, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 16007.

  8. Seat beltsApr 12, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks manufactured January 29, 2013, to January 21, 2015. While entering the vehicle, the seat belt tensioner cable may be positioned such that the driver slides over it. This movement may result in the fatigue and separation of the cable.

If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent the tensioner from being damaged. Any tensioner that has already been damaged will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15822.

The overheated exhaust components may melt nearby plastic parts and may result in an engine fire.

General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the engine control module, free of charge. The recall began on January 16, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 and GMC at 1-800-462-8782. General Motors' number for this recall is 14008.

  1. Service brakes, Apr 17, 2019

ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, EACH AT THE END OF A TWO HOUR DRIVE, I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE AND LOST ALL POWER TO MY BRAKES. THEY DID NOT DEPRESS TO THE FLOOR, THEY SEEMED TO ALMOST PUSH BACK. AT THAT POINT I PUSHED HARDER AND THE BRAKE PUSHED TO THE FLOOR. IN BOTH INSTANCES I ALMOST HIT THE PARKED CARS NEXT TO ME. DUE TO NOT HAVING PROPER BRAKING I HAD TO BACK UP AND PULL BACK IN, BRAKES CONTINUED TO DO THE SAME THING. AFTER COMING BACK TO MY TRUCK IN BOTH INSTANCES, ONCE AFTER A WEEK AT THE AIRPORT AND ANOTHER AFTER A FOUR HOUR APPOINTMENT, MY BRAKES WORKED FINE. THIS HAPPENED ON JULY 16, 2018 AND APRIL 11, 2019.

  2. Steering, Apr 15, 2019

DURING THE FAILURE, THE BRAKE, ABS, POWER STEERING, AND TRACTION CONTROL WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TROY ALLEN BUICK(358 BUTLER RD, KITTANNING, PA) WHERE THE POWER STEERING MODULE WAS REPROGRAMMED, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS FOR THE SAME FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000.

BRAKES WILL JUST LOCK UP AND HAS ALREADY CAUSE ME A COUPLE OF WREAKS, GM SHOULD REALLY FIX THIS BRAKE ISSUE..IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE FOR SURE AND THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE.. GM SEEMS TO HAVE GONE TO FOR CRAPPY WORKMANSHIP AND POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!

VACUUM PUMP ON BRAKES WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING DOWNHILL IN A CANYON. COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE IF WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE NOT GOOD.

  11. Service brakes, Mar 28, 2019

BRAKE ASSIST FAILED WITH OUT WARNING, BRAKE PEDAL GETS HARD, DID FIRST TIME AT SLOW SPEED IN REVERSE, EXTREME DIFFICULTY IN STOPPING. LUCKILY WAS NOTHING BEHIND ME IN PARKING LOT. FOUND OUT COMMON PROBLEM WITH VACUUM PUMP FAILURE IN THIS YEAR WITH AVERAGE MILEAGE AROUND 80,000, I HAVE 86,900 MILES. PROBLEM GOT CONTINUED AFTER LEAVING PARKING LOT WHEN DOING 30 MPH TRIED TO STOP FOR TRAFFIC LIGHT, HAD TO PUSH PEDAL WITH EXTREME FORCE TO TRY AND STOP TRUCK, AGAIN FORTUNATELY NOTHING IN FRONT OF ME, SO THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT

  12. Service brakes, Mar 19, 2019

2014 GMC SIERRA VACUUM PUMP FAILURE AT 81,201 MILES. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN EPIDEMIC WITH THESE TRUCKS. I TOW AN 8,000 POUND TRAILER AND TO THINK THE TRUCK BRAKES COULD POTENTIALLY NOT WORK IS INSANITY. HOW DOES GM MAKE THE STEERING ELECTRIC ON THIS TRUCK AND PUT ELECTRIC VACUUM PUMPS ON THE CAMARO'S AND CORVETTES BUT DECIDES TO PUT A MECHANICAL VACUUM PUMP ON THE TRUCKS? THIS IS AN IMMEDIATE SAFETY DEFECT THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.

  13. Service brakes, Mar 16, 2019

IF THE BRAKES ARE PUMPED 2-3 TIMES THE PEDDLE WILL BECOME REALLY FIRM AND HARD TO PRESS. WHEN THIS OCCURS THE TRUCK WILL NOT STOP. YOU HAVE TO STAND ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WITH BOTH FEET TO GET THE TRUCK TO STOP. PRETTY UNNERVING FOR A 75K MIKE TRUCK STILL UNDER DRIVETRAIN WARRANTY BUT NOT COVERED. I USE THIS TRUCK FOR WORK AND HAULING MY KIDS. I DON'T LIKE HAVING MY KIDS IN THIS VEHICLE!

BRAKES LOOSE PRESSURE, WHEN PRESSED ON UPHILL/DOWN HILL,IN REVERSE. AC HOSE FROM CONDENSER TO COMPRESSOR IS FAULTY LEAK OUT ALL FLUID

  16. Service brakes, Feb 25, 2019

THIS OCCURRENCE HAPPENED IN THE SPRING OF 2018. I HAD EXITED THE HIGHWAY AFTER A 25 MINUTE DRIVE AND SAT IN A LONG LINE TO ENTER A BALLPARK. THE WAIT IN THIS SLOW MOVING LINE MAY HAVE BEEN A HALF HOUR. IN THIS HALF HOUR, I WOULD LET OFF THE BRAKE TO ROLL FORWARD AND REAPPLY THE BRAKE. IT WAS MOSTLY DOWN HILL SO THE GAS PEDAL WAS UNNECESSARY. WHEN WE PAYED FOR PARKING, WE WERE ASKED TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, POINTING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION FOR PARKING. THE VEHICLE WAS PUT IN PARK. AFTER ISSUES WERE RESOLVED, I PUT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE AND TURNED AROUND FOR PARKING. IT WAS HERE THAT I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL TO GET BACK IN LINE, BUT WHEN I HIT THE BRAKE AS I ENTERED MY SPOT, THE BRAKE REFUSED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. I CONTINUED TO PRESS THE BRAKE, BRACING MY BACK AGAINST THE SEAT BACK REST, AND COULD FEEL US SLOWING, BUT NOT TO THE DEGREE I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL FOR. NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED AND THE SPEED I WAS SLOWING DOWN FROM COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 15 MPH. AS WE ENTERED THE PARKING LOT, THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. I COULD ONLY SLOW THE VEHICLE BY BRACING AGAINST THE BRAKE PEDAL. I COULD NOT GET THE VEHICLE TO SUDDEN STOP FROM A ROLLING SPEED. I REVERSED INTO MY PARKING SPOT, PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, APPLIED THE PARKING BRAKE, AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. WHEN I RETURNED FROM THE BALL GAME, I STARTED THE VEHICLE BACK UP, TOOK OFF THE PARKING BRAKE, PUT IT IN DRIVE AND TESTED THE BRAKES IN THE PARKING LOT. THE BRAKES FUNCTIONED LIKE NORMAL. DEPRESSING THE BRAKES HARD WOULD MAKE THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STOP. I HAVE NOT HAD THIS ISSUE SINCE. I HAVE NOT RETURNED TO THE BALLPARK YET, BUT I HAVE BEEN IN TRAFFIC JAMS AND BEEN TO OTHER ENTERTAINMENT EVENTS WHICH WOULD SIMULATE THE SAME SITUATIONS.

  17. Steering, Feb 25, 2019

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 GMC SIERRA 1500. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE STEERING FAILED AND THE VEHICLE BECAME DIFFICULT TO STEER. ALSO, THE SERVICE VEHICLE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MUSSON PATOUT BUICK GMC (214 U.S. 90 FRONTAGE RD, NEW IBERIA, LA 70560, (337) 465-4161) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING MOTOR PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,000.

  19. Service brakes, Feb 18, 2019

ON 2/12/19 I WAS DRIVING DOWN A BUSY STREET AT ABOUT 1:30PM I WAS TRYING TO APPLY MY BREAKS AND I COULD NOT STOP THERE WAS NO BREAKS. I HAD TO SWERVE INTO A LITTLE STREET TO AVOID CRASHING INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE. I PUT MY TRUCK INTO PARK TO STOP MY VEHICLE FROM CRASHING. I HAD MY TRUCK TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND MY VACUUM PUMP HAD TO BE REPLACED. WHICH THAT IS PART OF MY BREAKING SYSTEM. THE REASON I'M MAKING THIS COMPLAINT IS BECAUSE THIS COULD HAVE ENDED UP IN A FATALITY WHICH I WANT TO AVOID. THIS PART NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND ALL VEHICLES NEED TO BE CHECKED BEFORE THIS HAPPENS TO SOMEONE ELSE. BECAUSE IT HAPPENED TO ME IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE THAT OWNS THIS VEHICLE. MY TRUCK HAD LOW MILES ONLY 76,470. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY.

  20. Steering, Vehicle speed control, Wheels, Feb 14, 2019

THE VEHICLE 4WD SYSTEM REMAINS ENGAGED AND WILL NOT DISENGAGE. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION THE SYSTEM EFFECTS STEERING AND DRIVABILITY. ALSO EFFECTS SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE UTILIZES A CODE C0398 AND SHOW A MESSAGE OF THE DASH SERVICE 4WD. THIS IS DUE TO FAULTY SOFTWARE INSTALLED BY THE MANUFACTURER. WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO MECHANICAL PARTS IF DRIVEN ON THE VEHICLE AND IS A SAFETY HAZARD. GM REFERENCE # ISSUED TO ME WHEN ISSUE COMPLAINT OF THE OUT OF POCKET COST TO UPDATE THE SOFTWARE AS REQUIRED BY GM TO FIX THEIR OPERATING SYSTEM. MY REFERENCE NUMBER IS 9-5058496526. SAME ISSUE RESULTED IN 2015 GMC SIERRAS THAT CAUSED GM TO ISSUE A SERVICE BULLETIN #28770. SOFTWARE ISSUES ARE NOT WEAR AND TEAR COMPONENTS. GM FAULTY SOFTWARE IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE GM AS THEY CAN CAUSE SAFETY AND DAMAGE TO THE MECHANICAL PARTS OF THE VEHICLE.

  21. Service brakes, Feb 13, 2019

VACUUM PUMP FOR POWER BRAKE ASSIST WENT OUT. VEHICLE ONLY HAS 58000 MILES AT THE TIME. I LOST POWER BRAKES WHILE BACKING UP IN A GAS STATION CAUSING ME TO NEARLY STRIKE A GAS PUMP. HAD I NOT THOUGHT FAST AND DEPRESSED MY EMERGENCY BRAKE I WOULD HAVE STRUCK THE PUMP.

THE LIGHTING DISTANCE IS INADEQUATE AND IS SO DIRECTIONAL THAT THERE IS NO SIDE FLAIR LIGHTING FOR TURNING LIKE YOU HAVE WITH CONVENTIONAL HEADLIGHTS. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY BY THE NHTSA. I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE FOR 41/2 YEARS AND THE PROBLEM IS ONGOING SINCE I BOUGHT IT. THE DEALER HAS NO SOLUTION. NEW HI/LOW BULBS, DEALER INSTALLED AND STILL VERY DIM AND UNSAFE.
