Recalls and investigations

  1. Seat belts, frontApr 8, 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.

  2. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, wheel speed sensor/tone ringOct 24, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  3. Service brakes, hydraulic, power assist, vacuumSep 6, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.

As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

  4. EquipmentApr 26, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2009-2014 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, 2009 GMC Topkick 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 Series and Isuzu F Series, and 2009-2018 Chevrolet Express, and GMC Savana vehicles, equipped with certain Plastic-Handle Fire Extinguishers or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, instructing them to contact Kidde to get a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began June 11, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Isuzu customer service at 1-866-441-9638. GM's number for this recall is 18146.

  5. Air bags, frontalJul 10, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, 3500 HD, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles and 2014-2017 Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500, Trax, Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle, GMC Sierra 1500, Buick Encore, and 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Spark EV and SS vehicles. In the affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

  8. Seat beltsApr 12, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks manufactured January 29, 2013, to January 21, 2015. While entering the vehicle, the seat belt tensioner cable may be positioned such that the driver slides over it. This movement may result in the fatigue and separation of the cable.

If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent the tensioner from being damaged. Any tensioner that has already been damaged will be replaced, free of charge. 1. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Nov 9, 2024, fire

While driving, my wife and I heard a bang, and when she went to turn her head, she noticed that the vehicle was smoking from rear defroster, and the back windshield had smashed. we immediately pulled over and the vehicle did not stop smoking until we turned off the rear defroster. This put our safety at risk as the entire vehicle could’ve caught fire. When we went to check to see if it had been recalled, Our vehicle did not have any open recalls But we found that there were many other GMC Sierra trucks with this issue. We contacted our local dealer who confirmed that he had seen this happen to other GMC Sierra trucks. There was no warning light Or other indicator that this was going to happen. Unfortunately, Our vehicle was not included under recall N192265660 and we strongly recommend that another investigation is performed to include all 2014 GMC Sierra trucks. I have a video showing our vehicle smoking with a smashed, sliding Back windshield.

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra. The contact stated that while making a right turn into the driveway, the steering wheel had become stiff. No warning light had illuminated. The vehicle was no longer being driven since the steering wheel was too stiff and required excessive force causing control to be lost while driving. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.

  4. Steering, Electrical system, Oct 14, 2024

I am experiencing episodic loss of power steering assist without warning. This lasts for several seconds then power steering is restored. "StabiliTrak” message may be displayed during the event. On one occasion my radio also went off when my power steering failed. On one occasion my vehicle died shortly after losing power steering which almost resulted in me having a motor vehicle accident. I reported the problem to the GMC dealership and have scheduled the next available appointment to have it serviced.

  5. Electrical system, Oct 7, 2024

The vehicle lost ALL power, completely shut off with no warning while driving. There were no warnings or anything. Was stuck for about 5 minutes and had to let cars go around me (no power and no warning lights, so could not even use hazard lights). I did some reading and it people have said this could be a problem with negative battery cable needs to replaced. The vehicle started about 5 minutes later with no issues and had to reset clock and date.

  6. Electrical system, Exterior lighting, Sep 29, 2024

The high and low beams quit working while driving at night. This caused safety issue for myself and other drivers. Fuses good and bulbs good. Have seen multiple listings online about the same thing happening to other owners.

  7. Steering, Sep 9, 2024

Rack and pinion went out and installed a new oem remanufactured one from GM directly. The dealership programmed it but it is facing the same issues for the steering going out at low speeds. The recall was already performed but on the old part. GM Program # N172085440 In the parking lot it goes out and I was driving and slowing down for a turn when the steering went out for 3 seconds going 15 mph then returned.

  8. Structure, Aug 29, 2024

Entire frame is rotted through. Vehicle has only 55,539 miles on it.

  9. Steering, Aug 8, 2024

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while driving 5 MPH, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. There was no warning light illuminated. 12. Steering, Service brakes, Forward collision avoidance, Jul 30, 2024

Power steering was going in and out then all of a sudden completely went out.

  13. Other or unspecified, Jul 24, 2024

When making right turn steering got hard vehicle seem to loose power and stabilitrak light came on

  14. Suspension, Other or unspecified, Jul 23, 2024

I have a 2014 Silverado high-country. The truck has approximately 110k miles. I was told by chevy the frame is rusted through and unsafe to work on. They know these trucks had problems with the rust coating and only put out a bulletin to have them recoated. The problem is rust is rust. Once the metal was exposed there is no going back. My truck would other wise last another 50-70k miles.

  15. Structure, Jul 17, 2024

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while inspecting the vehicle, it was discovered that the subframe had experienced extensive rust and corrosion. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 116,000.

  16. Power train, Jun 30, 2024

A loud clunk is heard from the transmission when shifting from one gear to anther after having to reduce acceleration.

  17. Other or unspecified, Jun 25, 2024

The frame of the vehicle is rusted through in 2 areas. I recently noticed the rusting frame. Shortly after I purchase the vehicle the rust preventative coating, that was factory applied, was noticed pealing from the frame rails. I sprayed undercoating on the frame at that time to avoid rust after seeing that the factory application had failed. This has not been adequate as the frame has rusted in an area that the inside channel of the frame did not drain effectively and therefore collected water and salt during the winter months. The frame cross members are also rusting badly. The metal is flaking off excessively. In contrast the trailer hitch on the truck is in very good condition because it is the only part of the frame that appears to be properly conditioned to resist corrosion.

  18. Steering, Suspension, Electrical system, May 26, 2024

Electrical glitches happen at both, low speeds and while on the roadway. My steering wheel tightens up and I get a message on the dashboard “Stabilitrak” and another one “assisted steering reduced, drive with care”. My vehicle even shut off on me after pulling in to a parking space after turning steering wheel completely to one side

  19. Steering, Electrical system, Engine, May 8, 2024

I know this is a well known issue with these trucks. Have had issues with power steering not working at low speeds which they claim it’s do to low voltage. This has happened numerous times and then on May 3rd I went to back into my driveway off a busy state route with hills on each end of the road. Put my hazard lights on let three vehicles pass and then I turned the wheel and gave it gas soon as the truck got into the middle of the road it shut off. Everything stopped working no hazard lights for about 10seconds and then I had to put the truck into park turn ignition key off and then back on to restart the truck. Again this is all do to low voltage from what everyone else has said with the same issue. There are no warnings what so every even the voltage meter is fine and the truck doesn’t hesitate at all it’s like someone disconnected the battery. I’m sure there is a way for GM to reprogram the pc for the voltage drop. At least have something like radio go out or ac, heat other than the engine and entire electrical shutting off. Something like this is going to get someone killed and GM should be held accountable for these problems.

  20. Steering, May 3, 2024

The power steering started going out and then comes back on, which is very dangerous!

  21. Exterior lighting, Apr 16, 2024

The headlights are dangerously dim, can't drive the vehicle comfortably at night. There seems to be no solution for fixing them. A TSB has been issued concerning this, but does little to address fixing the problem.

  22. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Mar 18, 2024

    Stability track

  23. Service brakes, Mar 12, 2024

When I am braking at low speed my brakes start locking up and eventually do not work. This has happened on multiple occasions. I have almost wrecked multiple times I rarely drive my truck now cause it is unsafe. There is a recall on the brake booster 2014 to 2018 gmc seria but my truck vin is not included on that recall and it’s doing the exact same thing. GM recalls 3.4 million pickups and SUVs over brake pump Sept. 12, 2019 1 The recall includes the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra (model years 2014-2018), and affects a vacuum pump defect that may make it more difficult to brake at low speeds.

  24. Electrical system, Exterior lighting, Mar 6, 2024

Back up lights and Tail light problems My Back up lights turn on when the headlights are turned on and do not shut off unless the headlights are off. Also, recently, the rear tail lights were burning out early and would last only two weeks. The source of the problem seems to be in the fuse box. There is no short in the system. It appears to be in the fuse box of the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. Bulbs were replaced and burned out quickly. Replacement parts are expensive and this problem exists on other Chevrolet and GMC trucks.

  25. Steering, Feb 28, 2024

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at slow speeds, the power steering assist intermittently failed to operate as needed with the "Steering Assist Reduced - Drive with Care" message displayed. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V414000 (Steering) which was linked to the failure. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where the contact was informed that the vehicle was previously repaired under the recall and that the vehicle was no longer under recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
