Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorJul 1, 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Dealers will replace the left and right side RRAB modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 18, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available. Phase I owner notification letters were mailed on May 5, 2022. Phase II owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on May 31, 2022. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. This recall supersedes NHTSA recall number 20V-736. GM's number for this recall is N202324251.

  2. Seat belts, frontApr 8, 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.

  3. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorNov 25, 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator.

If the end cap separates from the inflator, the compressed gas will escape and the end cap can be propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the RRAB modules on the left and/or right side, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on December 22, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. Note: GM filed a new recall, number 21V-504 that supersedes this recall. All vehicles previously recalled under 20V-736 will now be repaired under the new recall number 21V-504. GM's numbers for this recall are N202309680, N202309681, and N202309682.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, wheel speed sensor/tone ringOct 24, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  5. Service brakes, hydraulic, power assist, vacuumSep 6, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.

As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

  6. Steering, electric power assist systemSep 7, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade vehicles. Electric power steering (EPS) assist may be lost momentarily, followed by a sudden return of EPS assist.

If EPS assist is lost and then suddenly returns, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the EPS module software, free of charge. The recall began October 12, 2018. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18289.

  7. Air bags, frontalJul 10, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17287.

  8. Air bags, frontalSep 8, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, 3500 HD, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles and 2014-2017 Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500, Trax, Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle, GMC Sierra 1500, Buick Encore, and 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Spark EV and SS vehicles. In the affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test.

The recall began on October 13, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 16007.

  9. Seat beltsApr 12, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks manufactured January 29, 2013, to January 21, 2015. While entering the vehicle, the seat belt tensioner cable may be positioned such that the driver slides over it. This movement may result in the fatigue and separation of the cable.

If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent the tensioner from being damaged. Any tensioner that has already been damaged will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15822.

  1. Service brakes, Nov 12, 2018

I FIRST NOTICED THE ISSUE ON THE MORNING OF SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH AS I WAS BACKING INTO A PARKING SPOT. AS I WAS BACKING IN, I NOTICED ALL OF A SUDDEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ON THE FLOOR AND I WAS ABOUT TO PLOW INTO A CURB AND THREW THE TRUCK IN PARK. I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT. THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED WAS ONE DAY LATER AS MY FIANCE AND I HAD JUST COMPLETED A 200 MILE DRIVE HOME. I WAS PULLING INTO THE PARKING LOT AT OUR TOWNHOUSE COMPLEX AND AS I WAS PULLING FORWARD TO BACK INTO THE SPACE, I NOTICED I HAD NO BRAKING POWER WHATSOEVER. I HAD TO THROW THE TRUCK IN PARK TO KEEP IT FROM HITTING A NEIGHBORS VEHICLE. I OPENED THE HOOD WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, AND NOTICED A TICKING NOISE I HADN'T HEARD BEFORE AND MY BRAKE PEDAL ONLY HAD ABOUT 1/4" OF TRAVEL LEFT. I COULD PULL THE PEDAL BACK TO WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE BUT IT WOULD JUST FALL BACK DOWN TO THE FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO VERY SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY PARK THE TRUCK USING PARK AND THE PARKING BRAKE. WITH THE ENGINE STILL RUNNING AND THE VEHICLE IN PARK, I DEPRESSED WHAT WAS LEFT OF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND HELD IT TO THE FLOOR AND HEARD A MOANING NOISE COMING FROM THE AREA NEAR THE MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER AND COULD FEEL THE BRAKE PEDAL SHUDDERING UNDER MY FOOT. I FEEL UNSAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AND I WAS GIVING NO WARNING OF THE BRAKE FAILURE. I AM HAVING THE VEHICLE TOWED TO SEWELL BUICK GMC IN DALLAS AND WILL UPDATE WHEN THEY FIND CAUSE. I WILL ALSO BE CALLING GM CUSTOMER SUPPORT AS I FEEL THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD.

  2. Service brakes, Nov 5, 2018

WHEN GOING UNDER 15MPH BRAKE PEDAL BECOMES HARD AND DOESN'T WORK. VEHICLE HAS 50K MILES. BRAKE BOOSTER DECLARED BAD BY MECHANIC. THIS ISSUE ALMOST CASUED ACCIDENT.

  3. Service brakes, Nov 4, 2018

TRUCK LOOSES BRAKING ABILITY AT LOW SPEEDS SUCH AS TRAFFIC OR PARKING LOTS.

  4. Service brakes, Nov 2, 2018

ISSUE WHEN BRAKING THAT CAUSES THE BRAKE PEDAL TO LOSE POWER AND CAUSES THE DRIVER TO DEPRESS THE PEDAL EXTREMELY HARD TO HAVE THE BRAKES ENGAGE. THE CAUSE APPEARS TO BE A FAULTY VACUUM PUMP THAT REQUIRES REPLACEMENT. THIS COULD BE POTENTIALLY A LARGE SAFETY ISSUE IF THE PUMP FAILS AND THE VEHICLE IS UNABLE TO BE STOPPED IN TIME TO AVOID A POSSIBLE COLLISION. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED BOTH WHILE IN TRAFFIC ON A CITY STREET AND WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PARK THE VEHICLE.

  5. Service brakes, Oct 29, 2018

THE VACUUM PUMP CONTROLLING THE BRAKES HAS FAILED. WHEN THE BRAKE IS PRESSED IN STOP/GO TRAFFIC, IT WILL FIRST STOP THE VEHICLE, BUT IF THE BRAKE IS RELEASED THEN PRESSED AGAIN, THE BRAKES WILL NOT WORK AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO ROLL FORWARD. A MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL NOISE CAN BE HEARD BEFORE THIS OCCURS. THIS IS MORE NOTICEABLE ON WET ROADS OR ROADS WITH A STEEP DECLINE.

  6. Service brakes, Oct 26, 2018

AT LOW SPEEDS (PARKING SPEED, SCHOOL PICKUP LINES, CREEPING TRAFFIC SPEED) THE BRAKE PEDAL WILL LOSE ALL BOOST PRESSURE. THE BRAKE PEDAL BECOMES EXTREMELY STIFF AND INEFFECTIVE. THIS SITUATION OCCURRED ON A FEW OCCASIONS AND CAUSED GREAT ALARM WITH MYSELF AND MY WIFE. GREAT POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING MACHINERY, ANIMALS OR HUMAN BEINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN PROMPTLY TO THE LOCAL GMC DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE WITH A COPY OF GM SERVICE BULLETINNO.: PIT5361B. THE DEALER KEPT THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL DAYS TO PERFORM AN EXISTING SAFETY RECALL FOR STEERING ANOMALIES (RECALL # 18289) AS WELL AS DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR THE BRAKE BOOST ISSUE. SERVICE BULLETIN PIT5361B WAS FOLLOWED AND THE VACUUM PUMP ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED TO RESOLVE THE BRAKE BOOST ISSUE. THIS REPAIR OCCURRED AT 40728 MILES - JUST BEYOND WARRANTY COVERAGE TERMS. TOTAL COST OF REPAIR $686.56. THE BRAKE BOOST ISSUE HAS NOT REOCCURRED TO DATE SINCE THE REPAIR. THIS VEHICLE IS NOT ABUSED OR INVOLVED IN ANY RIGOROUS ACTIVITY. IT IS A GENERAL USE VEHICLE AND IS USED PRIMARILY FOR FAMILY ERRANDS AND ROAD TRIPS.

  7. Service brakes, Oct 18, 2018

WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED THE PEDAL IS HARD AND VEHICLE DOES NOT STOP. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN GOING SLOW FOR EXAMPLE IN PARKING LOTS ETC. I HAVE READ OTHER ARTICLES WHERE PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING SAME THING AT HIGH AND LOW SPEEDS. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME, BUT IT STARTED 11/2017 AND I'VE EXPERIENCED THIS FOUR TIMES NOW AND THE WIFE AS WELL.CALLED GM THE OTHER MORNING WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE PER GM SOME VEHICLES WERE AFFECTED BUT NOT MINE, EXPLAINING WHAT I'VE FOUND AND WAS TOLD TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC.ASKED IF IT WOULD HAVE TO BE THE DEALER CAUSE THEY WERE EXPENSIVE TO DO DIAGNOSTIC. WAS TOLD YES AND IT WOULD HAVE TO BE OUT OF POCKET.

  8. Steering, Vehicle speed control, Service brakes, Oct 11, 2018

VEHICLE IS SHUTTING OFF AT ANY GIVEN SPEED, IE. 35 MPH IN TOWN OR 70 MPH ON A HIGHWAY WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC. WHEN VEHICLE SHUTS OFF, LOSS OF ALL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE TAKES PLACE. NO BRAKES, NO STEERING, NOTHING UNTIL THE VEHICLE RANDOMLY TURNS BACK ON. THIS IS NOT A CONSISTENT OCCURRENCE TO KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN OR BE PREPARED FOR IT TO HAPPEN. I WATCHED MY HUSBAND SHOOT ACROSS THE ROAD INTO THE OTHER LANE AND ALMOST PUT THE VEHICLE OVER A BANK ONE NIGHT WHEN IT HAPPENED. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE SINCE JANUARY 2018 FOR US, WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED MULTIPLE TIMES FOR THEM TO TELL US THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE THE ISSUE AND NOTHING IS COMING UP IN THEIR SYSTEM FOR AN ERROR CODE. IT HAS CAUSED A MAJOR INCONVENIENCE FOR MY FAMILY, AS WE DON'T DARE PUT OUR CHILDREN IN THE TRUCK LEAVING THE RESPONSIBILITY SOLELY ON ONE PARENT TO TRANSPORT THE KIDS TO AND FROM DAYCARE. I WORRY FOR THE SAFETY OF MY HUSBAND ON A DAILY BASIS.

  9. Service brakes, Oct 11, 2018

  11. Service brakes, Oct 1, 2018

WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, I ENTERED AN OFF RAMP TO FIND NO POWER ASSIST TO MY BRAKES. THE PEDAL WAS EXTREMELY STIFF. I CAME VERY CLOSE TO HAVING A COLLISION WITH THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I CONTACTED MY MECHANIC IMMEDIATELY, HE CHECKED IT OUT AND IT APPEARS THE VACUUM PUMP HAS FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE NEW AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH IT UNTIL THIS ISSUE.

  16. Service brakes, Jul 26, 2018

HAVING ISSUES WITH HARD BRAKE PEDAL. IT HAPPENED A FEW TIME WHEN THE TRUCK WAS NEW BUT COULD NEVER DUPLICATE IT. TWICE IT ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE SINCE FOUND A WAY TO DUPLICATE IT. WHEN BACKING A BOAT TRAILER DOWN A RAMP EVERY TIME THEY BECOME HARD, I HAVE TO RIDE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, BUT IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN THE BOAT IS ON THE TRAILER. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS OVER THE YEARS BUT NOT TILL RECENTLY HAVE I SEEN OTHER REPORTS OF TRUCK WITH THIS ISSUE. I HAVE NOT CONTACTED THE DEALER YET BUT WILL IN THE NEXT WEEK OR SO WHEN I CAN TAKE OFF TO GO. I DO NOT NOW DATE OF FIRST OCCURRENCE BUT I PUT A RANDOM DATE IN 2015.

WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED THE PEDAL IS HARD AND VEHICLE DOES NOT STOP. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN GOING SLOW FOR EXAMPLE IN PARKING LOTS ETC. I HAVE READ OTHER ARTICLES WHERE PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING SAME THING AT HIGH SPEEDS. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME, BUT IT STARTED 7/1/2018 AND I'VE EXPERIENCED THIS FOUR TIMES NOW. TOOK TO DEALER THIS MORNING THEY REFUSED TO LOOK AT ARTICLES EXPLAINING WHAT I'VE FOUND.

  19. Service brakes, Jun 6, 2018, crash

WHILE IN MOTION THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES HARD AND IS DIFFICULT TO STOP. I BELIEVE THIS IS THE CAUSE OF A LOW SPEED INCIDENT I HAD EARLIER THIS YEAR. THE ISSUE OCCURRES MOSTLY AT SLOW SPEEDS IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. IF FEELS LIKE THE BRAKE BOOSTER FAILS AND THE PEDAL IS BOTTOMED OUT. IT HAPPENS FREQUESNTLY WHILE HAULING A TRAILER IN REVERSE. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

  20. Service brakes, May 15, 2018

BRAKE FAILURE DUE TO BAD VACUUM PUMP

  21. Service brakes, May 4, 2018

WHILE DRIVING IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC SPEEDS THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES HARD AND THE TRUCK WILL NOT STOP. I HAVE NOTICED ON OTHER FORUMS THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE.

  22. Service brakes, Apr 18, 2018

I WAS DRIVING DOWN I20 IN DALLAS IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, THE TRAFFIC WAS HEAVY BUT MOVING AT 70 MILES AN HOUR. I SAW BRAKE LIGHTS IN FROM OF ME, WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD, I COULD NOT PRESS IT WITH ONE FOOT AND I COULD NOT SLOW DOWN. I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN BY PUTTING BOTH FEET ON THE PEDAL WITH ALL MY WEIGHT IT FELT LIKE IT WAS FOREVER BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO BE UNABLE TO STOP.I DROVE ANOTHER 15 MINUTES GOING VERY SLOW AND SCARED. PARKED MY TRUCK IN THE DRIVE AND HAD A TOW TRUCK PULL IT TO THE DEALERSHIP CLOSEST TO MY HOUSE. MY TRUCK ONLY HAS 58,000. I REALLY WAS SCARED FOR MY LIFE IF YOU HAVE EVER DRIVEN IN RUSH HOUR DALLAS TRAFFIC YOU UNDERSTAND . I COULD HAVE LOST MY LIFE OR BE SERIOUSLY INJURED. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME TODAY THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF THIS ISSUE. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY DOUBT GMC CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID WAS A VACUUM PUMP ON THE BREAKS. I LOOKED ON LINE AND OTHERS HAVE REPORTED THIS SAME ISSUE. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. STILL SHAKING OVER THE INCIDENT . I HOPE THIS PROBLEM IS ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED

  23. Service brakes, Mar 22, 2018
