General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 18, 2025. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N252494000.

I purchased a new 2024 GMC Sierra. I brought it to the dealer for the engine recall on the 6.2liter. It passed the inspection and the oil was changed to a heavier weight. After the recall was satisfied and the oil was changed to the heavier weight, around 45,000 miles, the engine failed at highway speeds while pulling a trailer and left my entire family stranded on the side of the highway; late at night. The engine completely failed and would not re-start. After researching the issue online and watching mechanics tear down these engines and suggest the problem, I believe that GMC has created great harm to the customers who've purchased the vehicles with 6.2L engines by allowing us to drive hundreds of thousands of "ticking time-bombs" across the country. Furthermore, it is absolutely infuriating to learn that problems clearly identifiable starting in 2021 were not addressed until a recall in April 2025. I strongly believe that G.M. has mishandled this information and put customers into vehicles that are verifiably unreliable and should correct the problem/take the hit to replace these faulty engines. !!TIMEBOMBS!! Engine started making clicking noises at highway speed.the vehicle lost power and was difficult to start. The 2024 gmc sierra was driven three blocks the a GM dealership and it was determined that the engine had failed. It took two months to complete the repair by replacing the engine with a rebuilt one

  4. Engine, Aug 27, 2026

I have a 2024 gmc 6.2 original motor blew up at 39,000 miles. Got a new motor installed it blew up at 44,000. Now they are about to install the third motor after it’s already had two of the same failure. Second failure broke down on the interstate were three lanes turned into one above a hill. It was very dangerous.

  5. Engine, Aug 27, 2026

Driving at highway speed vehicle began making odd engine noises and then lost power, pulled over and power continued to diminish until vehicle was no longer operable.

  6. Engine, Aug 25, 2026

On 4/30/25- I took my truck to the dealership due to receiving a recall notice (engine propulsion) in the GM app. No codes camp up and got the all clear. Dealer did not change oil to 0/40 nor air filter. Advised GM had not provided the recommended oil yet On 10/06/25- the Engine propulsion fix was completed. Oil changed to 0/ w40. Engine module reprogramming completedNext. On 3/07/26- dropped off my Sierra truck at dealership. Ticking sound. Confirmed engine replacement was needed even after the oil viscosity change. 4/22/26- Replaced engine assembly, radiator, gaskets, hose, belt kit. At the time of the engine replacement, the truck had only 16,756 miles. As of 8/25/26, having an oil compression test completed as the replacement engine has been excessively burning oil. Needed the dealership to complete an official text for GM, but from checking the oil, the vehicle has short @ 1quart of oil every 1,000 miles.

  8. Engine, Aug 21, 2026

At approximately 14,000 miles, the 6.2L V8 engine experienced a major failure due to a spun main bearing, which resulted in the complete replacement of the engine. The vehicle remained at the dealership for more than 60 days while the repair was completed. After receiving the vehicle back, it operated without any significant issues until approximately 30,000 miles, when the engine experienced another major failure. This second failure was attributed to the lifters, and the engine required substantial repairs and ultimately had to be rebuilt. Having two major engine failures before reaching 30,000 miles—first requiring a complete engine replacement and then requiring the replacement engine to be rebuilt—has raised serious concerns regarding the vehicle’s long-term reliability and durability.

The molding cover for the hood fell off by Hwy speed, and recently we I went to oil change after I get the car the technician said the bolt for tie the oil thing is not correct and it’s not for this car and this was the reason for leaking and need to replace with right one.

  11. Power train, Engine, Aug 16, 2026

I was driving north/east on [XXX] just outside of [XXX]. After accelerating to give another driver room to move out of his lane that was ending, I lost propulsion/power. The Sierra went into Neutral and told me something like "Press Start to resume". I had to immediately get off the interstate as I was rapidly losing speed. I was able to pull over to the shoulder of the interstate on the right, just before exit 2. After getting the vehicle parked, I was never able to restart the vehicle. The motor would not turn over. The display screens kept cycling between a blank display and a display that looked like the vehicle was on but the engine never turned on. When I tried to start the car, I got a message of "conditions not correct for shift". We could not even get the vehicle into Neutral. I used OnStar to get State Patrol to show up and put lights behind us for safety. OnStar should have a recording of this call. This was on Saturday XXX in the ballpark of 2:30 pm central time. I would imagine the officer also filed a report, but I did not get it. The vehicle was towed to Billion GMC in Iowa City. Billion GMC said their initial suspicion is the 6.2L motor failed / locked up on us as this is know issue that is subject of a class action lawsuit. These vehicles ARE NOT SAFE to be on the highway, someone is going to get seriously injured, please do everything you can to get these 6.2L engines off the road before someone dies. 12. Engine, Aug 11, 2026

On [XXX] I was driving my 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 Vin # [XXX] on a major highway in Houston when without warning the engine shut off, stranding me in the middle of busy traffic. I was able to get to the shoulder and restart the truck, but no warning lights came on so I continued on my drive when approximately 20 minutes later, while still on a busy freeway, the engine shut off again. I was able to restart the truck and within another 15 minutes the check engine light appeared, the engine lost power and started making a loud rattling noise. Roughly 2 minutes later, as I was attempting to pull over to the shoulder and safety, the truck shut off and would not restart. This was the 3rd time for it to stall out on a busy freeway which was very dangerous for myself and the other drivers. I contacted the local Chevy dealership and they sent a tow truck out to tow the truck back to their dealership service center. I was later contacted by a service advisor that said they found a code P0016. He informed me that the engine would need to be replaced. As of today 8/11/26, they are still waiting on backordered parts to arrive before they can even start on any repairs. transmission shift hard and slipping. When step on gas to go faster transmission shifts really hard like going drop on ground. Sometimes wont shift at all only goes up to 69 till left off gas and then transmission will shift. Start happening with about 10000 miles on truck and GMC said this is normal. Now need a torque converter and shift module in it.

  14. Power train, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 10, 2026

Was traveling home and started losing power going up a hill on XXX. The truck was surging, the check engine light came on and an audible warning of no (low?) oil pressure. The truck shut off on a busy interstate highway and barely got onto the shoulder. The tow truck driver had to lay on the ground with part of his body in the lane of travel to place "skids" under the rear tires because there is no way to place this vehicle in neutral for a tow without a special GM tool. When I contacted Harry Robinson GMC service center in [XXX], they told me that it was no longer a safety recall because the truck had passed diagnostics and new, high viscosity oil was put in the truck XXX. The GMC app says code P0016 which is the dreaded 6.2L camshaft to crankshaft alignment that accompanies engine component failure. 16. Engine, Aug 5, 2026

Ever since I bought this truck new, I noticed a lot of metal shavings and debris in the oil filter every single time I changed the oil. I took it to the dealership multiple times to have this looked into before the engine recall came out. The dealership took pictures of the metal and sent them to a General Motors engineer, but the engineer just told them it was "normal." Later on, the truck went in for the official recall inspection, passed the PICO test, and nothing was fixed. Then on August 4, 2026, I was driving on a crowded expressway right through a construction zone with absolutely no shoulder to pull over on. Out of nowhere, the truck started hesitating badly, lost power, and the engine started making a really loud knocking noise. It barely ran, and it was incredibly dangerous because there was nowhere to go and traffic was heavy. Luckily, I was able to limp the truck along just far enough to clear the construction zone and pull over safely. the truck was towed to the dealer were they confirmed the engine was blown, and needs replaced.

The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine seized, and the transmission independently shifted into park(P). The failure had occurred while driving on a busy highway at highway speeds. The contact's minor children were occupants inside the vehicle during the failure. The vehicle stalled in the middle of the highway. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that while attempting to restart the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with catastrophic engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred eight months later. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with catastrophic engine failure a second time. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.

While driving on XXX I received a message on the dash: service transmission, will not be able to shift soon. I went to the nearest GMC service center, located in [XXX]. Their diagnostics indicated that the Gear Shift Control Module needed to be replaced with new PN 86421783. That part was not available until XXX, but old PN 86274946 was available at a few dealersships, and it acould possibly be ordered and arrive sooner than XXX. I was told that driving the truck would be okay, but the part should be replaced as soon as possible. I live over an hour's drive from [XXX], and with the assurance that driving the GMC was okay, I chose to have the part shipped to and replaced at the dealership in [XXX], the nearest one to [XXX]. I drove back to [XXX], stopping at the Waldoboro dealership to make an appointment for their inspection of my truck, their troubleshooting the problem, and ordering the necessary parts to repair the transmission. When the part number went into their ordering system, the dealership was advised that no parts were available and no availability date was known. I contacted GMC Customer Assistance to express my concern and request assistance in locating the parts, but she was also unable to locate the parts or speed their availability. Again, on the assurance that the truck was okay to drive, on XXX I drove to my storage units near [XXX], and when I tried to leave and shifted into reverse the truck would not move. AAA towed me to the dealership in Waldoboro, and the replacement parts search began. Finally, on 7/28/26 I was advised that the part was at the dealership, and on XXX I picked up my repaired GMC truck. Unknown. Went in to get inspection for the recall on the motor and it failed the test so motor was replaced. Now the I've hade the motor for 9 moths started hearing knocking in the motor and losing power.

  21. Engine, Jul 26, 2026

The engine (6.2L V8) in my 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 failed at approximately 40,750 miles. I began hearing a ticking noise coming from the engine, and the dealership subsequently diagnosed the cause as damaged bearings that in turn damaged the crankshaft, requiring a full engine replacement. Notably, this vehicle was not included in the related recall covering this engine defect, despite exhibiting the same failure. The original failed engine may be available for inspection upon request but I would need to confirm with the dealership whether it was retained or already returned to GM under warranty. This defect creates a serious safety risk because a damaged crankshaft and bearings can cause the engine to lose power or shut off without warning while driving. An unexpected loss of engine power at highway speed or in traffic could result in loss of vehicle control, reduced ability to accelerate out of a hazard, and increased risk of a collision to myself and to other drivers on the road. The failure gave no advance warning, so there was no opportunity to pull over safely before the issue became apparent. The fact that this failure occurred outside the scope of the existing recall suggests other vehicles with the same defect may be similarly at risk without notice. The dealership diagnosed damaged bearings and a damaged crankshaft as the cause of the ticking noise and performed a full engine replacement under warranty, confirming the failure. The dealership diagnosed the failure and performed the repair; I do not have direct confirmation of whether GM's engineering or warranty division conducted a separate inspection of the failed components beyond the dealer-level diagnosis. No warning lights or messages appeared on the dashboard at any point. The only symptom prior to failure was a ticking sound from the engine which I noticed shortly before the engine required replacement. I was not provided any electronic warning that would have alerted me.

I was driving on the highway when the vehicle started to make clinking noises. The vehicle started to lose power as I accelerated it would feel like something was pulling me in the opposite direction and the knocking noise would get louder. Ultimately, I had the vehicle towed to a dealership. This vehicle passed the L87 recall not too long ago, and the vehicle is barely used.

  23. Structure, Jul 21, 2026

While driving at highway speed in normal traffic, the upper front grill deflector detached from the vehicle and struck the windshield, cracking the windshield. This appears consistent with the defect that is the subject of Safety Recall N24290120.

  24. Engine, Jul 17, 2026

2024 GMC Sierra 1500 6.2 v8 had a full engine seizure while driving on the freeway. All prior recall actions had already been met (scoped and upgraded oil), within 60 days of dealership review the engine stopped working. Recall 25V-274 L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion. After a 5 hour event on the side of the road AAA towed the vehicle to the dealership where I was told it would be many months before this is returned. It took many weeks for GM to just review and approve any next service (engine needs). At this point I'm told there are 181 people also in line for an engine and they can't see where I might be in that line. So we wait.

On XXX I started on a 3 hour trip with my daughter in the truck. My vehicle lost power and started knocking in the engine compartment. We were going over a very big Bridge([XXX]) from [XXX] to [XXX]. I had to coast off the highway and made it to a park. Truck would not restart and would not go into neutral. Waited 5 hours for AAA and was drug onto the flat bed truck because it would not go into neutral. It was then towed to the dealership(Union Park GMC) in [XXX], where they had to drag it off the flat bed truck. Truck was evaluated and determined by the technicians that it needed a new engine(6.2 L V8). Engine was tested and passed in October 2025. Still waiting on a new engine to be installed(today is XXX). GMC knows there are issues with these engines failing and continue to sell to the consumer. I am currently paying for a truck that I am not able to drive.
