Request for NHTSA Review Request for NHTSA Review Given the number and variety of structural symptoms present, I respectfully request that NHTSA evaluate whether this vehicle exhibits conditions consistent with excessive frame flex or structural failure and whether this complaint should be reviewed in connection with PE24-029 or other ongoing investigations involving Grand Design RV

  2. Structure, Trailer hitches, Aug 17, 2026

On a recent camping trip across the country, about half way we noticed that the door was not latching correctly, then we noticed fine powdery sawdust and bigger chunks of saw dust. We started to notice squeaking in [XXX] When we got to [XXX], a loud crunching noise was developing, starting out, stopping and turning. in [XXX] we noticed a lag bolt backed out of the frame and pushed trim off the wall. as we drove back home the crunching sound, squeaking got louder, and the camper started chucking. when we pulled into the campground in [XXX], and stopped the camper moved and crunched. we then drove 565 miles to home. trim had fallen off the walls, the cabinets would not open and the pin box was not sitting on the entire fifth wheel hitch. I followed Grand Designs technical service bulletin to check frame flex. I found two cracked welds on frame gussets. i took measurements at all the points listed and they were all out of spec. the worst is the pin box movement. it went up 2" before the camper moved. in the video, you can see it moving independently from the nose of the camper. the distance from the pin box to nose decreased by 1 1/8" the frame is flexing and raising up into the camper. this explains why I was having difficulties getting the hitch to release, the king pin was binding in the jaws of the hitch because of the excessive pitch of the pin box. when jacking up the camper and raising it 1/2" off the floor on the passenger side, the landing gear on the driver side was still touching the floor. the camper crunched, popped and cracked as I was raising it, as I lowered it the noises were louder and lasted after the weight was off of the pin box. inside the camper the noise was louder than outside, the floors crack and pop when walked on in the bedroom and bathroom, and the cabinets rubbed the walls 3/4" the frame in the basement has visible signs of metal sliding as much as 1/2". the vehicle is not safe to tow. I cannot find anyone willing to look at it INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  5. Structure, Dec 16, 2025

Lag bolts that connect the frame to the wall are coming out/ or were never put in place. Wall is separating from the frame and can see to the outside from the inside. If we had not seen this these bolts could have come all the way out causing the wall the separate while driving. Unknown at this time if there is any frame damage. Grand Design 2022 Momentum 381m

The contact owns a 2022 Grand Design Momentum RV. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the camper was bouncing up and down. Due to the failure, the furniture detached from the wall. In addition, the bedroom floor fractured and pieces of the floor were separated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was advised to take the camper to a dealer in North Carolina, a six-hour drive away. The dealer determined that the failure was the result of nine lag bolts that were missing from the camper frame. The contact was informed that the failure was due to a manufacturer defect. The camper was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that the pin box shifted downward, and the main slide on the passenger's side fractured and shifted down towards the ground and the furniture detached away from the wall. The main bedroom floor was fractured and sagging. The contact stated that while the RV was hitched and traveling, the main door unlatched and opened. Additionally, the garage door was bowed due to the failure of the frame. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was advised to take the camper back to the dealer. The contact requested the manufacturer to buy the camper back, however the request was denied.

DUE TO EXTREME FRAME FLEX, THE WELDS IN THE FRONT OF MY COACH BROKE AWAY FROM THE METAL. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THE ONLY THING HOLDING MY 44' TOY HAULER ON MY TRUCK WAS THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SKIN OF THE COACH. I WAS HORRIFIED TO FIND THAT I WAS DRIVING MY COACH UNDER THESE DANGEROUS CONDITIONS CAUSING EXTREME RISK TO MY FAMILY AND THOSE ON THE ROAD. TO BE CLEAR, THIS FAILURE ONLY SHOWED ITSELF WITH ONLY MINOR SYMPTOMS TO AN UNTRAINED EYE. AFTER READING ALL THE COMMENTS ONLINE, I REALIZED THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED FOR EVERYONE CONCERNED

  14. Structure, Latches/locks/linkages, Jan 22, 2025

I am having the frame flex issues as well as others. I’m not getting anywhere with grand design. The doors come open when traveling if not strapped from the inside. Pin box on the hitch moves excessively, interior panels are moving in the front, middle and rear of the trailer.

  15. Suspension, Other or unspecified, Jan 7, 2025

There are several things starting off with frame flexing issue causing numerous of parts to fail and move out of place. The manufacturer did a repair of this and my confidence in it being repaired correctly is very low. I do not feel safe towing this RV anywhere. Second, the broken leaf spring on the front axle. This could have caused the vehicle to lose control and cause a serious accident. It has been repaired. We have had the entry doors come open on us during towing. Nothing was lost from this. Lastly, the master bedroom slide has come out about 3 inches during travel. They repaired the inside bottom brace at the service center.

There were no warning lights illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The RV was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was unknown.

  17. Suspension, Structure, Service brakes, Dec 19, 2024

Multiple systems failed on this unit. Trailer Brake failure—The rear trailer brake wires were discovered to be severed inside the wheel drum from the factory. For the first year of use they were inoperable. This was suspected and confirmed with a thermal camera. The tow vehicle also alarmed “Check trailer brakes” while driving. A dealer inspected them and found the wires severed. This was repaired. Suspension failure—the rear driver side leaf spring broke on a paved highway 9 months after purchase. Pulled over immediately to inspect the issue and repair it. On 2 other separate occasions, we found broken wet bolts (after the unit was sitting in one place, unmoved for weeks). Also a cracked equalizer was replaced under warranty within the first year. The front passenger side leafspring also broke on an empty unit. Frame Failure & opening baggage compartment doors, slide out backing out in transit—symptoms of excessive upperdeck flex and frame failure began immediately upon purchase. Baggage compartment doors frequently open in transit. This has been a significant safety risk to the operator as well as other drivers. On more than one occasion the doors open in dense traffic in the middle of a city with nowhere to safely pull over. None of the contents of the compartment has fallen out to our knowledge, but could very easily fall out since none of the doors can be adequately secured. One door was replaced, but the issue not resolved. Upon further inspection, there were severely broken welds in the frame of the unit. The unit has sustained over 22 hours of welding on it to repair and reinforce the damaged frame. However, this has been repaired a total of 3 separate times. There is no guarantee that the repairs will hold moving forward. Also a result of the broken frame, the slide out began backing out in transport. Before leaving, the slide out was fully retracted and measured. Upon arrival the slide would be backed out 0.5-1” from the pre-departure measuremen

  18. Suspension, Structure, Other or unspecified, Dec 9, 2024

This unit is suffering from frame failure. Cargo doors have started opening on the freeway, cabinets are rubbing the wallpaper from frame flex, the forward floor has started squeaking, the forward lower exterior trim panel on the drivers' side is buckling, the forward walls have started creaking and popping when hitching up/unhitching and the pin-box "sinks" more than it ever did in the past when hitching up. I am very worried since these are all symptoms of frame failure. I've taken the unit to an authorized Grand Design repair center and so far, am not getting any support from Grand Design to actually fix the frame, the root cause for all of these symptoms. I'm worried if I accept the trailer and continue to use it, the problem will progress and we could end up with a complete failure while on the freeway.

  19. Suspension, Other or unspecified, Structure, Nov 28, 2024

The front frame has been in for repairs before for flexing issues/excessive movement. We have had a door pop open during travel and suspension parts break (hanger and leaf spring) in 2 separate incidents. The frame appears to have further issues on the passenger side more recently.

  20. Suspension, Structure, Oct 7, 2024

The RV has significant frame failure that Grand Design (the manufacturer) is ignoring. I noticed my floors warping and a cabinet crack. There was also some cracking of the fiberglass. I asked the dealership to check it out. The found that the frame is warped, multiple lagbolts are missing and several welds have popped. The RV is unsafe and not road worthy. Grand Design is aware of this issue and has yet to issue a recall or notify owners of the significant structural defect they caused by undersizing the frame and using the wrong lagbolts.

  21. Other or unspecified, Jul 22, 2024

BOTH ACCESS doors are opening in transit along with pass thru baggage storage doors this has been brought to the attention of the manufacturer and the selling dealership We have had to tape the doors shut just to get somewhere safe These problems started shortly after purchasing its been back to the factory for repairs where they found abnormal frame flex / failure ,we were told additional frame gussets were added There was stress cracks in the front cap area which we found out later that is a sign of abnormal frame flex which we believe is causing the doors to open allowing items to eject onto the roadway

  22. Structure, Other or unspecified, Jul 14, 2024

Frame not strong enough to support full GVWR. Result. Frame flexing excessively which can lead to frame failure and separation from the vehicle on the highway endangering everyone. Manufacturer has done their recommended fix on my rv but they have a history of ineffective repairs. So far my rv hasn’t been on the road enough since first repair to know if it will hold.

  23. Suspension, Jul 14, 2024

A spring snapped in two near the mounting point to the frame. Rv was not overloaded. Grand design authorized replacement of all springs which is now complete. Others have had similar failures. Im guessing the metal used was too brittle. The busted spring can cause the rv to pull sideways a bit making safe controlling on the highway a possible hazard to everyone on the highway. An accident could occur endangering everyone around the rv with failed suspension. I managed to catch the failure before any injuries occured.

  24. Structure, Equipment, Jul 10, 2024

I was towing my 5th wheel RV when I noticed doors I locked were swinging open. I noticed the rear toy hauler door first. The plastic screen door cover was missing and was unable to be found. A few miles later I noticed the front underbelly storage area on the passenger side was swinging open. Some power tools fell out and were unable to be found. A few hundred miles later the propane door unlatched and was swinging open. I closed and proceeded on route. My Lippert frame is flexing causing these locked doors to open mid travel, losing personal belonging in the middle of the interstate. Later that trip I noticed my front bedroom slide-out was moving out on one side (driver) After pulling over and attempting to pull it in, the slide would not pull in. It was sticking out about 8" off the side of the walls of the RV. Lastly I noticed my pin box was at a hard angle when traveling. It appears that something on the frame to the pin box is not secure. The RV needs to be inspected by the manufacturer as soon as possible to prevent major casualty.

  25. Structure, Other or unspecified, Jul 8, 2024

We live and travel full time in a 2022 Grand Design Momentum model 376THS. Screws and bolts holding the front opposing schwintek slides are breaking or backing out of the slide frame every time we travel, the front floors are squeaking and getting worse, the front cap developed stress cracks and was repaired one year ago - they have now reappeared and there are several more stress cracks visible on the front cap, the front side storage doors are coming OPEN DURING travel, we have lost items on the road from these areas, they are always locked closed before we travel. I believe this maybe be caused by a flexing coach frame.
