Recalls and investigations

  1. Vehicle speed control, accelerator pedalOct 10, 2019

Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain Accelerator Pedal Assemblies part numbers 699-114 and 825-5029-1, sold as replacement parts for 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2004-2008 Acura TL and TSX, 2003-2007 Honda Accord, 2005-2006 Honda CR-V, 2007-2011 Honda Element, 2005-2008 Honda Pilot and 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."

If the accelerator pedal binds, the engine may not quickly return to idle after the pedal is no longer pressed, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, using option 5. Dorman's number for this recall is AS1019XXXX.

The affected vehicles received a replacement driver air bag inflator as part of a previous Takata inflator recall remedy or a replacement driver air bag module containing the same inflator type as a service part. Due to a manufacturing error, in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver frontal air bag, these inflators may explode.

An explosion of an inflator within the driver frontal air bag module may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver, front seat passenger or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began April 10, 2019. 6. Air bags, frontal, passenger side, inflator moduleMar 30, 2017

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2003 Honda Accord Coupe vehicles, equipped with a four-cylinder engine. If the passenger frontal air bag module has been replaced, such as after a crash necessitating frontal air bag deployment, the replacement air bag module may include a Takata air bag inflator. These inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to lower absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicle and replace any Takata inflator used in the passenger frontal air bag module, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 1, 2017. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is KF0.

The affected vehicles have a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the passenger seat occupant or other occupants possibly causing serious injury or death.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are JU4, JU5, JU6, and JU7. Note: Vehicles that have already received a replacement passenger air bag inflator as part of the recall remedy for an earlier campaign such as 14V353 or 14V700 (Honda recall numbers S95, JH6, JH7, JH8, JH9, JJ0, JJ1, JJ2, JJ6, JM5 and JM6) are not included in this recall. However, this recall does supersede 13V132 and 14V349. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors, including manufacturing variability that, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238, select option 4. Note: Vehicles that have had their driver frontal air bag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy prior to September 12, 2014 need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well. Vehicles that, on or after September 12, 2014, received a remedy for a prior driver frontal air bag inflator recall already received an inflator of a different design, and therefore are not included in this recall and do not require additional servicing. Note: This recall fully supersedes recalls 08V-593, 09V-259, 10V-041, 11V-260, 14V-351 and 15V-153. Honda's numbers for this recall are JQ9, JR0, JR1, JR2, JR3, JR4, JR5, JR6, JR7, and JR8.

  11. Steering, hydraulic power assist, hose, piping, and connectionsMay 17, 2012

Honda is recalling certain model year 2007 and 2008 Acura TL and model year 2003-2007 Accord V6 vehicles. In May 2012, Honda filed a defect report to recall certain model year 2007 and 2008 Acura TL vehicles. In September 2012, Honda informed the agency that it was including an additional 573,147 vehicles including certain model year 2003 through 2007 Accord V6 vehicles. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 625,762. Prolonged under-hood and power steering fluid temperatures may cause the power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely, resulting in cracks and power steering fluid leakage.

If this occurs, power steering fluid can leak onto a hot catalytic converter, leading to smoke and possibly an under-hood fire.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install a new heat resistant power steering hose, free of charge. The original recall began in June 2012, and owners of those vehicles may obtain the free remedy. Sufficient parts are not yet available for owners of the vehicles covered by the September 2012 expansion, but are expected to be available in early 2013. Honda will notify owners of these vehicles beginning on October 26, 2012, and will notify these owners again when parts are available so those vehicles can be brought to dealers for applications of the free remedy. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009.

REMOVAL OF THE IGNITION KEY WHEN THE GEAR SELECTOR OF A VEHICLE WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HAS NOT BEEN SHIFTED TO THE PARK POSITION CAN ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO ROLL AWAY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE ORIGINAL INTERLOCK PIN AND LEVER WITHIN THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND REPLACE THEM WITH NEW, DESIGNED COMPONENTS. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 7, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009.

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR FOR SIGNS OF CORROSION. IF NO SIGNS OF CORROSION ARE PRESENT, A COVER WILL BE INSTALLED OVER THE WIPER MOTOR TO PREVENT WATER FROM ENTERING THE WIPER MOTOR HOUSING. MY 2003 HONDA ACCORD HAS A REALLY BAD "ROTTEN EGG" SMELL ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER I PURCHASED THE CAR IN JANUARY OF 2003. I WAS TOLD HONDA WAS INVESTIGATING THE PROBLEM. AFTER 8 MONTHS AND 10,000 MILES THE CAR STILL SMELLS AND HONDA NOW SAYS IT IS NORMAL. THIS IS NOT NORMAL AND I AM VERY DISAPOINTED HONDA IS NOT GOING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I OWN 2 HONDAS AND THEY WILL BE MY LAST. WE ARE GOING TO PURSUE LEMON LAWS AS A LAST ALTERNATIVE

THIS 2003 HONDA ACCORD HAS CAUSED ME A LOT OF PROBLEMS SINCE THE BEGINNING I BOUGHT IT. JUST AFTER 2 WEEKS WITH AROUND 500 MILES ALL THIS RATTLING NOISES STARTED COMING FROM THE DOORS AND WINDOWS. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY FIXED IT, BUT THE PROBLEM WAS BACK LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER. TODAY I HAVE 14000 MILES ON MY CAR AND I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALER MORE THEN 20 TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM. THEY HAVE REPLACED THE RUN CHANNELS AND OTHER PARTS WITHOUT ANY SUCCESS. ALSO THE INTERIOR IS FALLING A PART; THE MIDDLE COMPARTMENT IS NOT WORKING. THE CD COMPARTMENT GETS STUCK ALL THE TIME. THE ENGINE IS MAKING A LOT OF NOISE, FEELS LIKE ITS ACTUALLY SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SIDE NEXT TO ME. I KNOW THIS IS NOT THE QUALITY HONDA HAS, MY WIFE HAS A 1996 ACCORD AND IT DOESNT MAKE AS MUCH NOISES AS MINE, AND IT ALSO RUNS BETTER. HONDA NEEDS TO TAKE QUALITY SERIOUSLY. AND HELP ME OUT WITH THIS LEMON CAR.*AK

MY 2003 HONDA ACCORD HAS A REALLY BAD "ROTTEN EGG" SMELL ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER I PURCHASED THE CAR IN OCTOBER OF 2002. I HAVE ALREADY HAD THE CONVERTER REPLACED AT 3000 MILES. I HAVE SWITCHED BRANDS OF GASOLINE. STILL HAVE THE SMELL. I WAS TOLD ALL THE SENSORS CHECK OUT OKAY. WOULD LIKE SOME CLOSURE TO THE SMELL. THIS IS MY FIRST HONDA. JUST HAD THE 10K MILE SERVICE, CAR RUNS WORSE THAN BEFORE. POSSIBLY MY LAST HONDA PRODUCT UNLESS I GET THE PROBLEM RESOLVED.

  12. Engine and engine cooling, Fuel system, Gasoline, Jun 4, 2003

MY WIFE AND I PURCHASED A 2003 HONDA ACCORD IN DECEMBER OF 2002. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY THE CAR PUT OUT THIS HORRIBLE (ROTTEN EGG SMELL). I KNOW THIS IS COMING FROM THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND I PROCEEDED TO TELL THE SERVICE PEOPLE THAT THIS WAS THE PROBLEM. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT SO THEY COULD FIX THE PROBLEM. THEIR RESPONSE WAS THAT THE GAS I WAS USING HAD A HIGH SULFUR CONTENT AND WE MUST SWITCH GAS STATIONS IMMEDIATELY TO GET RID OF THE SMELL. SO I TRIED EVERY GAS STATION IN THE AREA AND THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE. THE CAR STARTED TO SHAKE AND SEEMED TO BE DRAWING POWER FROM THE ENGINE. THE IDLE WOULD ALSO RISE AND FALL WHEN THIS SHAKING IS HAPPENING. THE ODOR BECAME WORSE WHEN THE SHAKING WOULD START. THIS SMELL IS GIVING ME A BIG HEADACHE AND WHO KNOWS WHAT OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS. SO I CALLED HONDA SERVICE TO PUT THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE AGAIN. HONDA DID NOT EVEN WANT TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN, BUT WITH MUCH YELLING I GOT AN APPOINTMENT. THEY HAD THE CAR ALL DAY AND WHEN MY WIFE CALLED TO SEE IF THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. THEY CONTINUED TO EXPLAIN THAT IT IS (THE NATURE OF THE BEAST) AND ALL CARS PUT OFF THIS SMELL TO SOME DEGREE. I ALSO NOTICED THE GAS MILEAGE IS NOT WHAT HONDA STATED IT SHOULD BE. SO I CALLED HONDA DIRECTLY TO FILE A COMPLAINT AND FOUND OUT THAT HONDA IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, BUT HAS NO SOLUTIONS TO FIX IT. HONDA ASSURES ME THAT AFTER 10,000 TO 15,000 MILES GOES BY THAT THE SMELL WILL DECREASE AND GO AWAY. THIS SMELL STARTED AT 50 MILES AND IS GETTING MUCH WORSE AT 4,500 MILES. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HONDA CAR OR THEIR PRODUCTS AGAIN AS LONG AS I LIVE. I AM ALSO RESEARCHING INFORMATION ABOUT OTHER 2003 HONDA ACCORDS WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS AND FOUND MANY WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM GOING TO GET A LAWYER INVOLVED TO FIGHT THEM. WE THE CONSUMERS SHOULD NOT LET HONDA TAKE ADVANTAGE OF US. HONDA SHOULD BE ASHAMED TO SELL THE CONSUMERS SUCH A ROTTEN EGG. *NLM

  14. Engine and engine cooling, May 23, 2003

MY WIFE AND I PURCHASES A 2003 HONDA ACCORD IN NOVEMBER OF 2002. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY THE CAR EMITTED A ROTTEN EGG SMELL. I'VE BEEN AROUND CARS FOR QUITE AWHILE AND I KNEW RIGHT AWAY IT WAS A SMELL GIVEN OFF FROM A CATALYTIC CONVERTOR. WE TOOK THE CAR IN WITHIN A MONTH OR SO OF THE PURCHASE TO HAVE IT CHECKED. THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY PROBLEM AND COULD NOT RECREATE THE PROBLEM. THE PRIMARY THE SMELL WOULD OCCUR WAS WHEN ENTERING THE HIGHWAY OR ACCELERATING FROM STOPLIGHT TO STOPLIGHT. THE CAR NOW HAW ALMOST 11K MILES ON IT AND THE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE. IT IS ALSO NOT GETTING THE SAME MILEAGE THAT OUR PREVIOUS 2000 ACCORD V6 GOT. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG IN THIS AREA AS WELL. THIS WILL BE OUR LAST HONDA SINCE THE PROBLEMS ARE OCCURRING WITH NO OBVIOUS SOLUTION AVAILABLE.

  15. Engine and engine cooling, May 17, 2003

I PURCHASED A 2003 ACCORD EX V6, IN NOVEMBER OF 2002. SINCE DELIVERY,THERE HAS BEEN AN AWFUL SMELL OF ROTTEN EGGS. I CONTACTED THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES TO FIX THE PROBLEM, THEY AGREED TO REPLACE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS, STILL SMELLED AFTER I PICKED IT UP. CALLED THEIR 800# AND THEY SAID THE SMELL WILL DISAPPEAR AFTER ABOUT 7,000-8,000 MILES OF DRIVING. THIS WAS AT 5,000 MILES I CURRENTLY HAVE 11,000 AND THE SMELL IS NOT DISAPPEARING. THIS IS SUCH A POTENT SMELL THAT IT GIVES ME A HEADACHE AND I ALSO GET DIZZY FROM THESE TOXIC FUMES. THIS IS NOT THE TYPE OF PROBLEMS I SHOULD BE HAVING FOR SPENDING ALMOST $30,000 FOR A BRAND NEW CAR. ANY HELP OR ADVISE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. *JB

  19. Engine and engine cooling, Apr 4, 2003

FOLLOW UP TO PREVIOUS COMPLAINT. HONDA AMERICA SAYS ROTTEN EGG SMELL FROM 2003 ACCORD IS HYDROGEN SULFIDE. HONDA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP. READ ME A PREPARED STATEMENT THAT THE 2003 ACCORDS HAVE A PROBLEM IN RELEASING HYDROGEN SULFIDE DUE TO DESIGN, IT IS NOT THE GASOLINE. NO TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS HAS BEEN RELEASED. THERE IS NO FIX. HONDA CLAIMS THE PROBLEM SHOULD GO AWAY OR DISSIPATE SOMETIME BETWEEN 3000-5000 MILES. I HAVE 3950 MILES AND THE SMELL IS AWFUL. HONDA WILL DO NOTHING TO HELP. ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC), HYDROGEN SULFIDE IS A BROAD-SPECTRUM POISON! BREATHING HIGH LEVELS OF HYDROGEN SULFIDE CAN CAUSE DEATH WITHIN JUST A FEW BREATHS! EXPOSURE TO LOWER CONCENTRATIONS CAN RESULT IN EYE IRRITATION, A SORE THROAT, COUGH, SHORTNESS OF BREATH AND FLUID IN THE LUNGS. I HAVE BEEN SHOWING SOME OF THESE SYMPTOMS. WHY HAS NHTSA DONE NOTHING ON THIS ISSUE? THE PROBLEM MUST BE WIDE-SPREAD AS HONDA HAS A PREPARED STATEMENT FOR ITS REPS TO READ OVER THE PHONE. I WILL ATTEMPT A LEMON LAW CLAIM AND/OR CIVIL ACTION FOR DAMAGES DUE TO INJURIES FROM EXPOSURE TO THE HYDROGEN SULFIDE. (INCIDENT DATE DOES NOT APPLY AS THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN CONSTANT). *JB

  20. Engine and engine cooling, Mar 25, 2003

BOUGHT NEW 2003 ACCORD EX IN 1/03. SINCE HAVING THE CAR, THERE HAS BEEN A DAILY TERRIBLE "ROTTEN EGG" SMELL COMING FROM THE EXHAUST. DEALER CLAIMS THAT IT IS FROM THE WINTER BLEND OF GAS, BUT MY OLD CAR NEVER HAD THIS SMELL AND NO ONE I KNOW THAT HAS A CAR HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. THE SMELL IS SO BAD THAT PEOPLE GETTING OUT OF BACK DOORS WILL PLUG THEIR NOSES AND I MUST KEEP HEAT/AIR ON RECIRCULATE AND KEEP WINDOWS SHUT BECAUSE WHEN I STOP AT A LIGHT ETC..., THE SMELL GETS INTO THE CABIN. IF DEALER CONTINUES TO "NOT FIND A PROBLEM" I WILL CONSIDER LEMON LAW LAWSUIT.
