  4. Electrical system, body control module, softwareDec 10, 2020

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Accord Sedan, Accord Hybrid, and 2019-2020 Insight vehicles. A software error may cause intermittent or continuous disruptions in communication between the Body Control Module (BCM) and other components. This may result in malfunctions of various systems such as the windshield wipers and defroster, rearview camera, exterior lights, audible warning of a stopped vehicle, and power window operation. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 103, "Windshield Defrosting and Defogging Systems" and number 111, "Rear Visibility" as well as FMVSS numbers 104, 108, 114, 118, and 305.

Various system malfunctions such as inoperative windshield wipers, defroster, rearview camera, or exterior lighting can increase the risk of a crash.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will update the BCM software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 22, 2021. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is X95.

Representative owner complaints

1,882 reports, newest first.

  1. Exterior lighting, Sep 6, 2023

The low beam lights abruptly stopped working without warning. The high beams, fog lights and interior lights work fine but I had to use my bright lights to get home which visually impaired oncoming traffic & myself because they flashed me with their bright lights. I called the dealership, and they said what happened was highly unusual and that led lights don't go out. Following this my system lights started to come on for the tire pressure and the brakes. They are still on and my tires work fine and brakes are working fine.

  2. Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 31, 2023

Several warning lights appeared on the dash of my 2018 Honda Accord last week, including the check engine light along with several other warnings. The vehicle was acting very strange while I was driving it to the dealership, especially going up inclines. I was informed the fuel pump needed to be replaced, which has now been accomplished. The vehicle only has 34575 miles on it. In my lifetime, I have never had a car that needed a fuel pump replaced, and this one has less than 35,000 miles on it. I feel the fuel pump was inherently defective, not the result of normal wear and tear. I could not have driven this car safely any distance. It has now been replaced, but I believe this fuel pump could cause serious problems and accidents for others if not corrected.

  3. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Aug 29, 2023

In the multimple other complaints filed (regarding the Collision Mitigation System, Infotainment, etc.) it become obvious that Honda has really screwed up the firmware/software and how it interacts with the sensors/systems and the user on this vehicle. The issue, this time, was the common occurrence of the battery dying. HOWEVER, instead of simply putting up a message that says "Hello, your battery is in an untennable state", someone thought it would be a good idea to flush EVERY warning possible, as in "Anti-Lock Brake System Problem...", "Vehicle Stability Assist System Problem...", etc. And, of course, it would demand that you "take it to the dealer." Upon replacing the battery the issues went away, for a few days. Then, another set of warnings - this time, something to do with the "Emission System". Upon taking it to a non-Honda reputable mechanic (so, a third party without a conflict of interest), they reset the codes and then things seemed to settle down. Good to know - another thing that just "happens with these" when it comes to the Accords of the 2018+ model year.

  4. Other or unspecified, Service brakes, Aug 29, 2023

The 2018 Accords have a system called "Brake Hold" which is intended to engage the braking system while a vehicle is stopped at, say, a stop-light. The intent seems to be to allow the driver to have their foot on the gas, instead of the brake pedal. The Brake Hold system frequently has an issue where it allows the vehicle to creep. This, generally, seems to happen in colder temperatures. Another, pattern of behavior is when the vehicle has been brought to a slow roll, then stopped (using the brake pedal) and as soon as the brake pedal is release, the Brake Hold system fails to hold the vehicle in the stopped position. After a significant delay, the Brake System is engaged, but the vehicles had, at that point, lurched forward several inches, if not over a foot. This indicates (just as with the Collision Mitigation System delays, discussed in other complaints) that there is a significant issue with the timing of the control system utilized in the Brake Hold, the sensor(s) or both, where the system fails to detect the conditions in real time and reacts in a delayed manner. Again, as with other issues on the later Honda models, Honda has failed to perform comprehensive troubleshooting of the issue (even after me taking the vehicle to the dealer as indicated by Honda. This is a complaint for a separately occurring instance.

  5. Other or unspecified, Aug 29, 2023

This is a complaint for a unique occurrence of this problem on this date. In some instances, it seems that the ventilation system is potentially pulling noxious fumes in from the engine bay and in others, there seems to be an issue with moisture retention when AC is run. The vehicle forces foul smelling air in to the cab. Honda has failed to properly troubleshoot the issue (i.e. retain the vehicle for more than a few hours and try to understand if there is an issue with the ventilation system or something else).

  6. Power train, Aug 29, 2023

The vehicle had a very violent shift (perhaps it was turbo lag related?) at low speed (under 20 miles per hour - typically, this happens in a parking lot or the like as you slowly drive away). In the past, this had been mentioned to the dealer, numerous times, who claimed that the issue is not reproducible. However, during the visit on 12/06/2022, dealer mechanic(s) claimed that they did witness the issue and the fix the performed the following (per dealer's notes): "reset TCM and Batter cable reset." after which (the dealer notes state): "Let the customer know that the trans will adapt to driving habits within 200 miles. If the customer drives hard, the transmission will learn hard to shift hard etc..." The second statement is nonsensical, since, most of the time the transmission shifts relatively fine, regardless of the driving pattern (i.e. hard, mellow, etc.) and the issue happens intermittently (every so many hundreds miles driven), at very low speeds with very little accelerator input, which indicates more of a software issue (and, possibly a mechanical design defect, coupled with the SW issue). Again, Honda has refused to properly troubleshoot and address the issue. There are now other customers with, what sound like, a very similar problem: [XXX] And, just as with my vehicle, other dealers are claiming "there is no issue" and Honda has ignored the issues. Honda has a history of transmission problems from the 2000s and it's really worrying that they might be repeating that pattern with 2018-on models: [XXX] While I am noting the issue at this mileage, there are numerous other instances of where the same problem occurred. The violent manner in which these shifts happen, makes one wonder how much mechanical damage is being done to the transmission and if a recall should be issued. 15. Electrical system, Vehicle speed control, Forward collision avoidance, Aug 28, 2023

The vehicle keeps stating the brake mitigation, acc, and other various Honda sensor features need to be repaired and to contact a dealer. The vehicle de-accelerates on its home and doesn’t allow any of the Honda sense features to work. All the components of the dash are triggered at once. Most of the time the vehicle drives fine without the use of the Honda sense features. I have brought this to Honda and they state they don’t see any issues known to cause this problem. Short of the fact they never seem to happen when I bring it to the dealership. Most of the time this goes away on its own but lately the problems are lasting days. I don’t feel safe driving my own vehicle which has been greatly maintained.

  16. Power train, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 27, 2023

My car ran good up until July 29, 2023. There was a slight tornado and lots of rain when I parked the car it was fine hour later it began to stall and became undriveable. I called my insurance company Progressive and called Honda of Manchester and Progressive had the car towed to Honda. They came back with the diagnosis of my HeadGaskit needs to be replaced my fuel injectors are miss firing and the piston rings needs to be replaced. I have 84,998 miles on the car and all of the maintenance records are up to date. Honda gave me a price of $4,800+ to have it fixed. Where I’m concerned at is how can these many problems happen at one time and I had know warning signs it just stopped running all of a sudden.

  17. Air bags, Seat belts, Aug 23, 2023

My car keeps indicating a supplemental restraint system issue then goes away I’m not sure what’s going on but I’ve seen several other complaints about this same issue with Honda.

  18. Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 22, 2023

We were told the fuel injectors were bad. This put us and others at risk as the car stopped moving when we pulled into traffic. The problem has been confirmed by the Honda Cars of Rock Hill dealership. The vehicle has been inspected by the Honda Cars of Rock Hill dealership. There were no warming lamps or messages that appeared before this happened.

  19. Electrical system, Forward collision avoidance, Lane departure, Aug 21, 2023

The contact owns a 2018 Honda Accord. While driving at 35-40 mph the AEB braking system activated without cause. There was no vehicle, person or object in front of the car so the sensor should not have activated. The car braked without warning very abruptly. This has happened several times and I have reported to this site at least two other occasions in similar nature.

while driving in highway, all dash light slit up like a Christmas Tree and vehicle lost power. I was not able to go over 30 mph and was in danger of being rear ended on freeway. I was able to pull over to safety and turn vehicle off. Upon restarting the vehicle, I was able to make it back home. This has happened on 3-4 diff occasions. Honda is not accepting responsibility. They continuously refer me to Honda dealer to be ripped off for a diagnostic. There are several forums online complaining about the same issue. My battery and alternator is good. Please help and hold Honda accountable to their negligence in the build of these vehicles.

3 Incidents of auto braking without a car being in front of me. My vehicle abruptly applied the brakes from underneath my foot so hard, that myself and passengers jerked forward. This almost caused the vehicle behind me to run into me. I now drive with extreme caution wondering when will it happen again. It's not safe for anyone to be in my vehicle especially young children in car seats such as my nephew and granddaughter.

I have been dealing with the check engine light codes p0172c & p219c. Honda inspected my vehicle and said the problem is that my car is running too rich and the fuel injectors are bad but they say i cant really do anything because the fuel injectors are on backorder but really they are discontinued and they are unsure when theyll comeback. Im concerned for my safety and for others on the road because the p219c code is commonly associated with a leaky head gasket, and after speaking to several third party mechanics theyve all said they have been getting others with the same problem and the fuel injector isnt the actual problem, its the head gasket. which means unfortunately my head gasket could blow any moment im driving my car which i NEED to do because i NEED to work. I travel at least 40 miles a day in houston traffic and im very worried about the potential damages i can cause should my head gasket blow while im driving in rush hour on the highway. I had no other kind of warning for this besides the check engine light and its been on for the past 4 weeks.

I was traveling on interstate 65 in alabama running about 70 mph when suddenly the brakes slammed on automatically. The car behind me had to swerve over in the next lane to keep from hitting me from behind. this is the 3rd time this has happened but this last time almost caused a wreck. i AM SCARED TO DRIVE THIS CAR NOW. The dealer kept the car for 2 days but could not reproduce this . the dash board started flashing brake. All 3 times there was no car in front or beside me.
