Representative owner complaints: fuel/propulsion system

24 reports, newest first. Show all

  1. Other or unspecified, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 26, 2026

The auto idle start when I am at a red light it will turn off and put it in park. I have to restart the van and put it back in drive. I believe this to be a safety issue. I have my kids with me and its dangerous. I would like to know what can be done and why hasn't this been a recall. I have to remember to push the auto idle button each time I get in to drive otherwise Im afraid ill get stranded at an intersection. Its been going on for at least a year and the dealership thought it was the battery we have replaced the battery so that is not the issue.

  2. Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 15, 2026

On September 14, 2026, my 2020 Honda Odyssey experienced a sudden, severe low-pressure fuel pump failure while idling/parked. The engine began running extremely rough, surging repeatedly between 300 RPM and 1,000 RPM, knocking, and stalling. I was parked at the time, preventing a severe accident. Upon trying to restart, the vehicle turned over multiple times and would only catch when depressing the accelerator pedal, accompanied by cylinder knocking and an engine thermal spike. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair facility (Tuffy Auto Service). The diagnostic scan confirmed DTC P0087 (Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low). A mechanical gauge test showed the low-side fuel pressure dropped to 10 PSI (far below the standard operating pressure of 50–60 PSI). The shop verified that the in-tank low-pressure fuel pump assembly failed internally and requires complete replacement. This failure, symptom pattern, diagnostic code (P0087), and component match the exact defect profile in NHTSA Recall 23V-858 (Denso Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Impeller Failure). However, when checking my VIN, American Honda claims this specific vehicle is excluded from the recall range. American Honda Consumer Relations subsequently refused goodwill assistance due to non-dealer service history and vehicle resale status. This creates a severe safety hazard. A vehicle experiencing a sudden drop to 10 PSI fuel pressure while driving in traffic will lose motive power, stall unexpectedly, and disable power steering and braking assist. I am submitting this report because American Honda has failed to include all affected production batches in Recall 23V-858. I request NHTSA expand Recall 23V-858 to include out-of-range 2020 Honda Odyssey VINs exhibiting identical low-side fuel pump failures.

  3. Fuel/propulsion system, Jun 16, 2026

The high pressure fuel pump has failed on this vehicle. This is a known problem for vehicles between 2017 and 2020 and has not been adequately addressed by the corporation.

  4. Fuel/propulsion system, May 19, 2026

High pressure fuel pump failed on a low mileage 2020 Honda Odyssey. Upon initial inspection the Honda mechanic reported the area around the fuel pipe was saturated with fuel.

  5. Fuel/propulsion system, May 14, 2026

Vehicle stopped at red light, idle start/stop stopped engine. At green light, upon pressing on gas engine started, vehicle ready to move, but stalled. This happened a few times. Took it to Honda who said they know about this issue and that the Isle start/stop is not a “perfect” system. Tried to sell me an expensive battery. Huge concern in terms of safety in a vehicle with children and stalling in busy streets.

  6. Electrical system, Fuel/propulsion system, Lane departure, May 7, 2026

The blind spot system was a problem when I purchased the car, it spent 15 days in service in the first 30 days of ownership to address the issues. Now, I after another light came on I discovered 9 open recalls on the vehicle that were not disclosed prior to purchase.

  7. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Apr 27, 2026

Our Odyssey is equipped with idle stop. Sometimes when idle stop engages, the engine won't start again afterwards. We need to turn the car off completely, and then try again. Usually it turns on after doing so. We try to always turn off the idle stop when we start up the vehicle, but sometimes forget. This hasn't led to an accident yet, but has led to some angry vehicles when we can't move when a traffic light turns green. To be clear, this was not an isolated incident, but happens somewhat regularly if idle stop isn't turned off. Honda dealers have told us they don't have any fix, and have recommended that we could purchase a third party "idlestopper".

  8. Electrical system, Fuel/propulsion system, Feb 23, 2026

I stopped at a red light and then my car just stopped. It seemed the car wasn’t able to start up the engine from the idle mode. I had to restart the car at the intersection with a truck behind me and with 3 kids under the age of [XXX] on the car with me. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  9. Fuel/propulsion system, Nov 27, 2025

When pressing the accelerator, there is an extremely loud and abnormal noise coming from the fuel pump. The noise is so severe that it raises safety concerns while driving. The issue appears similar to fuel-pump–related problems reported in other recalled Honda vehicles.

  10. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 25, 2025

My car went completely dead while stopped in traffic on a busy street. My kids were in the car and thankfully I was able to crank it by pressing the start button. This issue has already been “fixed” and the dealership “cannot replicate”

  11. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Jul 3, 2025

My Vehicle was at the dealer for service in March of 2025. At that time they performed RECALL 23-008 although the vehicle did not have issues with the idle stop system. Since some time in June, at multiple occasions, the vehicle shifted to Park on its own when restarting from idle stop. Last night, the vehicle fully shut off and lost all electrical power when restarting from idle stop leaving me stranded in the dark at a busy intersection without the ability to turn on my hazard lights. The vehicle repowered after a few minutes. When the system restarted, the info-tainment system activated the anti theft software which happens during full power loss.

  12. Power train, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, May 6, 2025

Subject: Urgent Vehicle Safety Concern – Sudden Malfunction and Safety Risk On [XXX], at approximately [XXX, I experienced a traumatic incident when my vehicle unexpectedly malfunctioned while I was driving home. After making a left turn on a green signal from [XXX] toward the Community, the car suddenly stalled. By God's grace, I managed to cross Woodbridge Avenue before stopping, avoiding a major traffic obstruction. However, it came to a complete stop in the middle of the street, creating a hazardous situation. After a brief pause, the car moved approximately 10 yards before stopping again, becoming completely immobile in the middle of a public road. Attempts to jump-start the battery failed. All warning lights turned on, but the engine would not start. The vehicle could not be restarted or moved under its own power. 911 was called, and police responded promptly to the scene. With the assistance of my wife, police officers, and local neighbors, a tow company was called to remove the vehicle from the roadway. It was then towed and parked in a nearby lot. This incident was highly traumatic and posed a serious threat to my safety, my family's safety, and the safety of the public. Diagnostics and expert assessments indicate the issue may be related to a manufacturer defect, which is deeply concerning given that this is a new vehicle. At this time, the vehicle is no longer drivable. I am seeking urgent assistance to resolve this matter with the manufacturer and to ensure that other consumers are not exposed to similar risks. 13. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Apr 11, 2025

The idle start stop feature constantly doesn’t work. When stopped at a light or stop sign the engine will turn off and when I release the break it is supposed to reengage the engine. Instead it stalls out causing me to have to put the car in park and restart the car. There have been several incidents where this is during rush hour traffic causing traffic jams. Sometimes I have to wait a few minutes before it will actually turn over. The car is 5 years old and I have had the replace the battery twice and I have been told that this feature puts a lot of pressure on the battery. Never can the dealership recreate the issue.

  14. Fuel/propulsion system, Feb 5, 2024

  17. Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Dec 22, 2023

The car stalled when stopped at a red traffic light. This happened on 2 occasions, 11-3-23 and 12-9-23. The second time other cars behind us had to go around us while we tried to restart the car which put them at risk of being hit by cars in the other lanes. There was no warning. I took the car in for regular maintenance a few days ago during which the dealership did a multi point inspection but did not discuss this issue. Yesterday I heard about the fuel pump recall and think this might be the same issue. I called the dealership today but they said our car is not under the recall. Our car is available for inspection upon request.

  18. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Nov 16, 2023

Idle stop caused engine to stall 3 separate times leaving me stranded in busy intersections making it difficult to restart vehicle and move safely out of the way. Initial start up checks come on, asked to put car in park, step on brake to restart car, car won’t restart. Once happened at night and shut off all my lights for 30 seconds making me not visible for cars coming up to me.

  19. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 23, 2023

At a stop light the engine idle shutoff feature shut off the engine. Then a few moments later the entire vehicle shut off. I could not turn the vehicle back on after trying several times to do so. After about five attempts the vehicle turned back on in park gear. During this time the light turned green and the vehicle would not turn on, cars behind began honking. This has happened a few times since owning the vehicle. I was dead in the middle of a busy intersection. I have asked the dealer to look at the electrical system as there have been several anomalies but it checks out fine. I replaced the battery thinking that might be the problem but did not work. I believe it is the same problem as PE22005

  20. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 17, 2023

On at least 5 occasions the car has not restarted after going into auto idle while stopped. Normally after pressing the brake pedal all the way down while stopped, the engine will shut off and then restart after releasing pressure from the brake pedal. When it doesn't restart, all the lights on the dashboard come on and you can't do anything. It won't restart if your press the start button and you can't shift it to neutral to push it out of the road. Eventually it will restart by pressing the start button. I have not had this problem if I turn off the auto idle, however you have to manually turn off the auto idle every time you restart the car.

  21. Fuel/propulsion system, May 8, 2023

The idle stop caused my car to turn off on the highway while I was stopped in traffic. Unfortunately, I was the last car in the line on the highway and the truck coming behind me was coming at a rapid rate of speed. Thankfully, the same issue had happened to my son the week before and he was able to tell me that putting the car in park and turning it off and back on would fix the issue. There is a service bulletin 21-013 related to this issue but not a recall. This is a safety issue that needs to be addressed.

  22. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Dec 27, 2022

Not sure about which component failed and put my family and I in significant danger. We had just come to a stop at a traffic light at the end of a highway exit ramp when the car shut off without warning. Completely off. Hazard lights didn’t even work. Nothing worked. Took a minute or two until the vehicle restarted as if nothing had happened. Cars were coming up fast behind us and had to move quickly to get around us. This was late at night so we were hard to spot without any working lights. Thank the Lord no one was injured. I suspect it has something to do with the idle-stop feature. This incident happened within the last 2 hours so it hasn’t been reproduced or confirmed by a service center. Please require Honda into issue a recall for whatever caused this defect.

  23. Electrical system, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 24, 2022

The signal turned Red, as I was braking, the car engine stuttered and car shut off. Startled, push the park button, and pressed the engine start button but no response, pressed again and it started. This happened 6 months before but didn't report it as I thought it was a once off event. 6 months ago, the car was at a red light, the IDLE was ON and when I accelerated cause the light changed GREEN, the car shut off. Get the feeling its due to the IDLE but wanted to report this matter

New ex-l model van with about 800 miles on it began to permeate the cabin with a gaseous odor coming from the air vents in recirculate mode and could be smelled from the outside of the vehicle as well. Initially smelled it when at idle after a 150 mile one-way trip. The vehicle had to be turned off to make the smell stop. It started again upon return and got stronger when the a/c was put in fresh air mode.
