Recalls and investigations

  1. Structure, frame and membersJun 4, 2026

American Honda Motor Company (Honda) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Honda Pilot, 2017-2023 Ridgeline, 2019-2023 Passport, and 2014-2020 Acura MDX vehicles that were sold in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, or Wisconsin. The rear subframe may corrode at the suspension mounting points, which can result in rear suspension component failure.

Failure of rear suspension components, such as the rear control arm, can cause a loss of vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will inspect the rear subframe and install a rear subframe reinforcement kit and, as necessary, repair or replace the rear subframe components, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed July 27, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available, anticipated in the fall of 2026. Owners may contact Honda's customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are AOU and AOT. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning June 10, 2026.

  1. Vehicle speed control, Service brakes, Lane departure, Jul 19, 2026

Lane keeping assist problem light on, collision mitigation system problem light on, road departure mitigation system problem light on, adaptive cruise control problem light on. brake sy stem light on. The vehicle’s multiple camera has failed and it is a common occurrence with this vehicle. Honda has not recalled this and is charging customers upwards of $2500 to replace the camera behind the windshield and recalibrate it. This isn’t an issue based on miles there have been incidents with it happening as early as 30,000 miles. I bought my vehicle used and about 113,000 this started happening

  2. Steering, Other or unspecified, Service brakes, Jul 7, 2026

On XXX, while my wife was driving our 2017 Honda Pilot Elite (VIN: [XXX]) southbound on [XXX], approaching the intersection with [XXX], the vehicle experienced a complete engine stall due to the Auto Idle Stop feature. The engine shut off at a stop but failed to automatically restart when she released the brake to proceed. All dashboard warning lights flashed, and the vehicle became inoperable in the middle of traffic, creating a significant traffic jam at a busy intersection. My wife was able to restart the vehicle manually by shifting to Park and pressing the engine start/stop button. This is part of a persistent safety defect with the Auto Idle Stop (Idle Stop-Start) system. The vehicle has stalled multiple times in traffic and on highways since new. Honda performed TSB 23-008 (PGM-FI Idle Stop software update/product update campaign) on XXX at Autopark Honda in Cary, NC, but the issue was not resolved. I also replaced the battery in November 2024 at the dealership's recommendation, but the no-restart/stall problem continues. I normally keep the Auto Idle Stop feature disabled for safety, but my wife forgot on this occasion. **Cause:** UNKNOWN (per Honda TSBs 23-008 and 23-009, the issue relates to excessive cylinder pressure and/or low cranking torque after Idle Stop engages; prior fixes have not resolved it). This defect creates a dangerous situation where the vehicle can unexpectedly lose power in traffic, increasing collision risk. I have reported this to the dealership multiple times and am seeking resolution under TSB 23-009 (warranty extension). 3. Service brakes, Forward collision avoidance, Feb 12, 2026

On Feb. 03, 2026 around 5:30 pm, driving 290 west going 65 mph. No cars on either side of me and the next closest car 6 lengths of me, my car slammed on the brakes and alarmed. The sudden braking lasted 1-2 seconds.

  4. Electrical system, Service brakes, Forward collision avoidance, Aug 28, 2025

so i have a Honda pilot and have been seeing a light saying that my collision mitigation system is broke so i took it in for a diagnostic which i was charged for which is fine and normal i guess but they told me that the system was broken possibly from just driving through construction zones and this causes phantom braking so i have to get it fixed but they want to charge me for the repairs which from my perspective the customer i shouldn't have to pay for a defect like that that can cause injurie or much worse

  5. Steering, Suspension, Service brakes, Apr 4, 2025

The vehicle was sold to us with pre-existing major damage to the control arms, bearings and a brake rotor. We heard a metal on metal scraping noise when turning left and immediately took it to a certified Honda dealer who then provided us details of the extent of the damage. The damage to the brake rotor could have caused brake failure and damage to the control arm could have caused on accident. I can't imagine the guilt I'd feel if my [XXX] wife and my [XXX] son got into an accident. This vehicle is their daily driver. 9. Other or unspecified, Service brakes, Engine, Aug 29, 2022

While driving in the highway , took an exit and slowed down and stop in a traffic and the car ‘s engine stop suddenly and Iam unable to restart it, the brake pad feels stuck and the neutral and drive button does not work, when you turn it on the other electronic still works like the audio and air conditioning but the engine will not turn on . It took us about an hour before the car start working again , causing a long traffic jam in the highway due to we can’t even put the car on neutral for other cars to help us move it on the side, 2 police officers came to the rescue to help us but it didn’t work until we tried again and for some divine intervention the engine start working again. I will have my car check at the honda service in the next few days.

  13. Steering, Electrical system, Service brakes, Apr 29, 2021

SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR, THE WHEELS MAKE A CRACKING NOICE WHEN TURNING AND BRAKING. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER 2-3 TIMES AND THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING THAT IT MAY JUST BE THE BRAKE PADS STICKING SOME TIMES. NOW AT 55,000 MILES THE POWER STEERING EPS AND ALL OTHER LIGHTS CAME ON LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE. THIS HAD NOT HAPPENED IN THE PAST. I HAVE READ UP ON IT AND OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. MY MAIN CONCERN SINCE I PURCHASED IT WAS THAT CRACKING NOISE WHEN TURNING WHEN BACKING UP OR TURNING WHEN GOING FORWARD. THIS ONLY HAPPENS ON STARTING TO DRIVE NOT AT FAST SPEEDS. NOW ALL THE LIGHTS ARE ON AND DON'T KNOW WHAT THE ISSUE IS. FROM RESEARCH IT SEEMS LIKE IT MAY BE SOMETHING WITH THE FUEL INJECTORS. MY CAR IS ALREADY PAST IT'S WARRANTY.

  14. Other or unspecified, Service brakes, Nov 20, 2020

    1. I HAD A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE A FEW WEEKS AGO AND I WAS TOLD BY HONDA DEALER IN SAN LUIS OBISPO,CA THAT MY BRAKES WERE IN GOOD SHAPE. BUT I NOTICED THAT WHEN I AM DRIVING IN THE HIGHWAY AT AROUND 70 MPH THEN APPLY BRAKES, THE CAR SHAKES. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO HONDA AND THEY THINK IT IS THE ROTOR AND FIXED IT YESTERDAY. THE OTHER NEW PROBLEM IS THE ALARM THAT KEPT GOING OFF RANDOMLY WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED AND LOCKED. WHEN I PICKED UP MY CAR AFTER THE OIL CHANGE A FEW WEEKS AGO, THE TECHNICIAN DID NOT MENTION ANY PROBLEMS WITH MY ALARM GOING OFF WHILE MY CAR WAS AT THE DELEARSHIP. I WENT BACK TO THE HONDA DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TEST YESTERDAY AND THEY RECOMMEND REPLACING THE KEYLESS ACCESS CONTROL UNIT. THIS WILL COST CLOSE TO $ 1000 DIAGNOSTIC, PARTS AND LABOR. I AM TOLD IF I DO NOT REPLACE THE CONTROL UNIT, THE PROBLEM CAN GET WORSE WHERE MY CAR WON'T START ANYMORE. SO I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT REPLACE IT. SO I BROUGHT MY CAR JUST FOR ROUTINE OIL CHANGE WEEKS AGO AND NOW I HAVE PROBLEM WITH ROTOR AND CONTROL UNIT THAT COST ME $ 502.72 YESTERDAY AND ANOTHER $700 PLUS DOLLARS TO REPLACE THE CONTROL UNIT. FOR THE CONTROL UNIT TO FAIL IN JUST 3 YEARS, SUGGESTS IT MAY BE DEFECTIVE TO BEGIN WITH OR VERY POOR QUALITY. UNFORTUNATELY IT JUST WENT OUT OF WARRANTY. I AM REPORTING THIS IN CASE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR HONDA PILOT THAT THE MANUFACTURER NEEDS TO ADDRESS AND FIX.

  15. Power train, Service brakes, Nov 14, 2019

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 HONDA PILOT. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE STEERING WHEEL SHOOK WITHOUT WARNING. ADDITIONALLY, THE VEHICLE SHIFTED HARD AND JERKED FROM FIRST TO SECOND GEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DCH PARAMUS HONDA (120 NJ-4, PARAMUS, NJ 07652, (201) 426-4676) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ROTOR AND BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURES RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.

  16. Steering, Wheels, Service brakes, Sep 4, 2019

STEERING WHEEL JERKING LEFT OR RIGHT. JERKING OCCURS ERRATICALLY AND UNPREDICTABLY; STEERING WHEEL JERKS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHICH COULD EASILY CAUSE THE LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY AND IS VERY DANGEROUS AND STRESSFUL SINCE IT IS NOT CLEAR WHEN THE WHEEL JERKING WILL OCCUR WHILE DRIVING. IT DOES TEND TO OCCUR WHILE ON CURVED ROADS, APPEARING TO TRY TO JERK THE WHEEL STRAIGHT WHEN THE CAR STEERING NEEDS TO BE ADJUSTED TO STAY IN ONE'S LANE; RED AND AMBER MALFUNCTION LIGHTS COME ON AND OFF FREQUENTLY. IN PARTICULAR, THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) LIGHT COMES ON AND OFF REGULARLY EVEN WITHOUT THE JERKING STEERING WHEEL. THE TPMS WARNING LIGHT ALSO OFTEN FLASHES AT THE SAME TIME AS THE JERKING STEERING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS SUCH AS AROUND 50 MPH. RED DISPLAY OF BRAKE LIGHT WARNING AND AMBER DISPLAY OF BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING OFTEN OCCUR, SOMETIMES PAIRED WITH THE JERKING STEERING WHEEL. THE JERKING OCCURS TYPICALLY ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS SUCH AS 50 OR 55 MILES PER HOUR. *JS

  19. Service brakes, Jul 23, 2019

ON TWO OCCASIONS I WAS DRIVING AT A SPEED BETWEEN 30-45 MPH ON A STATE HIGHWAY WHEN FOR NO APPARENT REASON THE AUTO BRAKING SYSTEM SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES NEARLY CAUSING THE CAR BEHIND ME TO HIT ME. THE SECOND TIME THE ROAD WAS SLICK AND I NEARLY LOST CONTROL.

  20. Service brakes, Jun 23, 2019

AT TRAFFIC LIGHT, CAR WONT STOP DURING BRAKING, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL VIBRATION. SPEED WAS +/-20 MPH. I HAD TO TURN RIGHT TO AVOID ACCIDENT AND AFTER 300FT CAR STOP, BRAKES WORK TO NORMAL AGAIN. INCIDENT HAPPENED IN QUIET FM ROAD, ABOUT 1 MILES FROM HOME. MILEAGE 22K.

  21. Service brakes, May 19, 2019

THIS VEHICLE APPEARS TO HAVE FAULTY BRAKES - EITHER BY DESIGN OR BY MANUFACTURING. WHILE I CANNOT COMMENT ON THE CHANCES OF BRAKE FAILURE BUT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BRAKES IS UNSATISFACTORY AND UNPREDICTABLE. I'M FAIRLY CONFIDENT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE AFFECTED. I WOULD PERSONALLY INVESTIGATE THE BRAKES ON THE CURRENT GENERATION HONDA PILOTS AS THEY APPEAR TO BE A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE. BUT, THE DECISION TO UNDERTAKE THIS EXERCISE OF INVESTIGATING HONDA IS UP TO YOU.

  22. Service brakes, Dec 13, 2018, crash

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 HONDA PILOT. WHILE DRIVING AT UNKNOWN SPEEDS, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED, BUT FAILED TO RESPOND. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO TWO VEHICLES. IN ADDITION, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL VIBRATION IN THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR AUTO BODY REPAIRS. THE LOCAL DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED FOR THE BRAKE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

  23. Service brakes, Sep 26, 2018

PURCHASED OUR 2017 PILOT STRAIGHT FROM DEALER IN FEB 2017; BY SUMMER, BRAKES WOULD SQUEAK WHEN PRESSURE APPLIED - GOT MUCH WORSE OVER TIME. SENT MULTIPLE VIDEOS OVER NEXT 12 MONTHS, HAD CAR IN FOR REPAIR AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH - SERVICE DEPT COULD NEVER RESOLVE ISSUE, DESPITE REPLACING BRAKE PADS AND ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM. PER DEALERSHIP, AMERICAN HONDA MOTORS REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE PROBLEM DESPITE DEALERSHIP DOING SO.

  24. Service brakes, Hydraulic, Electronic stability control (ESC), Traction control system, Aug 15, 2018

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 HONDA PILOT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRACTION CONTROL, ANTI-LOCK BRAKES, HILL ASSIST, VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST, AND TRAILER STABILITY ASSIST WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED AND REMAINED LIT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HONDA VILLAGE (371 WASHINGTON ST, NEWTON, MA) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED, BUT THE FAILURES COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 12,000. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED.

  25. Service brakes, Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 6, 2018

I HAVE 2017 HONDA PILOT TOURING. I HAVE A REOCCURRING PROBLEM WITH THE ANTI BREAK MITIGATION SYSTEM. IT CONTINUALLY ACTIVATES IN MULTIPLE DRIVING SITUATIONS THAT DO NOT REQUIRE IT TO ACTIVATE. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN I'M DRIVING AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS, WITH AND WITHOUT THE CRUISE CONTROL IS SET, AND ON ANY TYPE OF ROAD. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP 5 TIMES TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM CORRECTED. THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY HAVE TRIED TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM 5 TIMES WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE ANTI BREAK SYSTEM CONTINUES TO ACTIVATE INCORRECTLY ON ALMOST A DAILY BASIS. THE DEALERSHIP HAS STATED THAT THERE ISN'T A PROBLEM AND THAT I CAN TURN OFF THE ANTI BREAK SYSTEM AND DRIVE MY VEHICLE WITHOUT IT. I PAID FOR THIS FEATURE AND I DO NOT THINK THAT I NEED TO TURN IT OFF AS IT IS A SAFETY FEATURE OF MY CAR. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND IT NEEDS TO OPERATE CORRECTLY. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM.
