Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Power train, automatic transmissionJun 13, 2019

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.2L engines. In the event that a clutch becomes stuck in the transmission, the transmission software may shift the transmission to neutral.

An unexpected shift to neutral would result in a loss of drive, increasing the risk of crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the transmission software, free of charge. The recall began August 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is V69.

  4. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  5. EquipmentDec 21, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S55.

2 ISSUES. (1)) TRANSMISSION DOESN'T SHIFT PROPERLY. COMING FROM A HIGHER SPEED AND BREAK IE SLOWING DOWN AND THEN ACCELERATING THERE IS A DELAY. THE JEEP DOESN'T KNOW WHAT GEAR TO BE IN. I HAVE BEEN ALMOST REAR ENDED, HONKED AT, SWERVED AROUND BECAUSE THE JEEP WON'T SPEED UP PROPERLY. (2) GEAR SHIFTER LIGHTS DON'T FUNCTION PROPERLY. THE GEAR SHIFTER WAS ALREADY REPLACED ONCE UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY AND THE SAME ISSUE HAS HAPPENED AGAIN

  2. Power train, Electrical system, Aug 19, 2020

MY JEEP EXPERTLY THREE TIMES NOW WHILE DRIVING 30 TO 40 MPH AUTOMATICALLY SHIFTS INTO NEUTRAL. I GET AN ERROR MESSAGE ON THE DASH THAT TELL ME BASICALLY TO STOP AND RESTART VEHICLE. I'M ALSO EXPERIENCING ALL THE LIGHTS ON MY SHIFTER ARE ON/RED AT THE SAME TIME. THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE THE SHIFTER LIGHTS APPEAR NORMAL IS TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART.

  3. Power train, Aug 16, 2020

WHILE DRIVING SERVICE SHIFTER LIGHT COMES ON. WHEN I TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT GOES AWAY AND THEN WHEN I START DRIVING IT COMES ON AGAIN. IT HAPPENS SPORADICALLY.

  4. Engine, Aug 15, 2020

ENGEN LIGHT IS ON, OIL LIGHT IS ON. OIL SENSOR IS NOT WORKING.I AM TOLD THE SENSOR IS CAUSING ALL OF THIS AND A $ 600.00 REPAIRED REQUIRED, BUT NOT GARETIED TO SOLVE MY PROBLEM. ?? THE LIGHTS CAME ON AFTER I GOT AN OIL CHANGE , WHEN I WAS PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC. ALSO THE LIGHT INDICATOR ON SHIFTER POSITION LIGHT UP ALL POSITIONS.

  5. Power train, Aug 13, 2020

OUR JEEP CHEROKEE HAS HAD ON AND OFF TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS FOR OVER 3 YEARS. 3 YEARS AGO THE VALVE BODY FAILED WHILE WE WERE DRIVING LEAVING US IN A VULNERABLE SPOT WHILE TURNING INTO TRAFFIC. THE CAR STARTED BUCKING, LOSING POWER, THEN GAINING IT BACK AND FLASHING LOTS OF DASH WARNINGS. WE LIMPED THE VEHICLE HOME AND THEN TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THEY INFORMED US WE HAD A FAULTY VALVE BODY AND REPLACED IT UNDER WARRANTY. 3 WEEKS AGO THE SAME PROBLEMS STARTED HAPPENING WHEN I WAS BACKING OUT OF OUR DRIVEWAY. I ROLLED BACKWARD INTO THE STREET AND WAS STRANDED. I COULD NOT GO FORWARDS OR BACKWARDS. AFTER 2 WEEKS OF WAITING TO GET AN APPOINTMENT, WE LIMPED IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. IT WAS REVVING HIGH AND STRUGGLING TO GO THE WHOLE WAY THERE. AT FIRST THEY DIAGNOSED IT AT LOW FLUID (WHICH DOESN'T MAKE SENSE BECAUSE THERE WAS NO LEAK. THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THE STRANGENESS OF THE SITUATION. AFTER BEING TOLD IT WAS RUNNING FINE AND WE COULD PROBABLY PICK IT UP THE NEXT DAY, WE WERE SUDDENLY INFORMED THAT IT NEEDS A WHOLE NEW TRANSMISSION. IT SEEMS THESE PROBLEMS ARE VERY COMMON FOR THIS TRANSMISSION. IN THE RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCE, THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS TO SOMEONE. WE WERE LUCKY IN OUR SITUATIONS, BUT I'D HATE TO THINK WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF SOMEONE SUDDENLY LOST POWER. CHRYSLER SEEMS TO BE VERY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND IS ONLY OFFERING TO COVER SOME OF THE REPLACEMENT. IT SEEMS THAT THIS VEHICLE, LIKE ITS V6 COUNTERPART, SHOULD BE RECALLED FOR THIS VERY ISSUE. CHRYSLER'S REFUSAL TO FIX THE PROBLEM HAS LEFT PEOPLE BROKEN DOWN AND STRANDED WHILE ALSO SADDLING THEM WITH THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIRS FOR A FLAWED DESIGN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. HAVE A GREAT DAY.

  8. Electrical system, Aug 12, 2020

ON 2 OCCASSIONS MY VEHICLE STALLED WHILE DRIVING/IN MOTION AND TRANSMISSION DISENGAGED ALMOST CAUSING A SERIOUS MVA. ALL LIGHTS ON THE SHIFTER TURNED ON AND THE A "SERVICE SHIFTER" MESSAGE APPEARED ON SCREEN. I TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE TO ROUTE 18 JEEP OF EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ. THE DEALER RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TESTS AND FOUND THE TIPM COMPUTER MALFUNCTIONED. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THE PREVIOUS YEAR JEEP/ CRYSLER MODES HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AND A RECALL WAS ISSUED ON THE TIPM. CONCERNING AS THIS ISSUE MAY CAUSE SERIOUS MVA AND JEOPARDIZE SAFETY.

  9. Power train, Aug 11, 2020

SERVICE SHIFTER WARNING IS ALWAYS SHOWING AND DOESN'T RESET. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THIS IS A KNOWN ONGOING ISSUE WITH A LOT OF JEEPS. THEY SAID EARLY MODEL SHIFTERS ARE FAULTY AND HAVE TO BE REPLACED WITH A NEWER MODEL.

JERKS AND SLIPS WHEN YOU TAKE OFF OR ACCELERATE. THIS HAPPENS SEVERAL TIMES A DAY EVERYDAY

  11. Other or unspecified, Aug 5, 2020

I'M EXPERIENCING A LOSS OF ENGAGEMENT IN THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION AND THE SYSTEM THAT SENDS POWER TO THE FRONT WHEELS CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO LOWER POWER TO THE VEHICLE WHILE IN MOTION. IT ALSO CAUSES THE BRAKE TO FAIL TO ENGAGE. FCA W47 AND FCA W48

UNDER RECALL W47 A SOFTWARE UPDATE WAS DONE AT DEALER ASKED SERVICE ADVISER IF THIS WAS JUST A TEMPORARY FIX UNTIL PARTS WERE AVAILABLE AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE UPDATE TO COMPUTER WAS ALL THAT WAS BEING DONE EVEN THOU UNDER NHTSA RECALL REPORT 20V-343 IT STATES THAT DIFFERENTIAL INPUT SPLINES AND TRANSMISSION OUTPUT SHAFT MAY RESULT IN THE TEETH OF THE INPUT SPLINES WEARING OFF I FEEL THESE PARTS SHOULD BE REPLACED UNDER RECALL W47 NOT JUST A REPROGRAMMING OF DTCM DRIVE TRAIN CONTROL MODULE AND EPB ELECTRIC PARK BRAKE SOFTWARE ESPECIALLY SINCE ACCORDING TO REPORT A MORE ROBUST DIFFERENTIAL INPUT SPLINES ARE BEING USED IN LATER MODELS PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS RECALL AND REPLACE PARTS THAT ARE NEEDED TO MAKE VEHICLE SAFE TO OPERATE AGAIN

EMERGENCY BREAK GOT LOCKED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. CAR WOULDN'T START AND HAD TO GET IT TOWED TO JEEP DEALERSHIP. JEEP SAID IT WAS THE EMERGENCY BREAK MODULE AND WIRING. IT APPEARED TO BE SO SORT OF LEAKAGE IN THE COMPARTMENT BUT NO WATER WAS FOUND NEAR MODULE.

  18. Fuel/propulsion system, Jul 31, 2020

AFTER I FILL UP MY GAS TANK, THE CAR WILL STALL WHEN SLOWING (LESS THAN 30 MPH) OR IDLING MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE FIRST SEVERAL MILES OF DRIVING. THE CAR STARTS SHUDDERING, THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON, IT STALLS, SAYS TO SHIFT TO PARK, AND THEN REQUIRES A RESTART. SOMETIMES IT WILL NOT GO INTO GEAR AND EVERYTHING SEIZES UP, INCLUDING THE STEERING WHEEL. SOMETIMES A NOTIFICATION COMES ON ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION AND ALL OTHER COMPONENTS BEING INOPERABLE. IT ONLY HAPPENS AFTER FILLING UP MY TANK - IF I DON'T FILL MY TANK ALL THE WAY, IT DOES NOT HAPPEN. NOTE THAT I DO NOT "TOP OFF" MY GAS - I STOP WHEN THE PUMP STOPS. IT IS REALLY SCARY AND REALLY DANGEROUS, AS I STALLED OUT ON A MERGING INTERSTATE RAMP AND THEN ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN TRAFFIC SLOWED THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE JUNE 2019.
