Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  4. EquipmentDec 21, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles manufactured July 29, 2013, to February 5, 2016. The seat fasteners on the first or second row seats may not have been tightened to the proper torque specification.

Loose fasteners may allow the seats to move, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupants in the event of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seats or seat sets, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during September 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall S63.

  6. Power train, automatic transmissionJul 12, 2016

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee and 2015 Chrysler 200, Jeep Renegade, RAM ProMaster, and 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles equipped with 9-speed automatic transmissions. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S55.

The affected vehicles are equipped with radios that have software vulnerabilities that can allow third-party access to certain networked vehicle control systems.

Exploitation of the software vulnerability may result in unauthorized remote modification and control of certain vehicle systems, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify and mail affected owners a USB drive that includes a software update that eliminates the vulnerability, free of charge. Optionally, owners may download the update to their own USB drive from http://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/ or take their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for immediate installation. In an effort to mitigate the effects of this security vulnerability, Chrysler has had the wireless service provider close the open cellular connection to the vehicle that provided unauthorized access to the vehicle network. This measure may not have been implemented on all vehicles and does not address access by other means that will be remedied by the software update. The recall began on August 25, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R40.

TAKATA RECALL I HAVE HAD MY 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE (LATITUDE) FOR 2YRS NOW. ON SATURDAY 3/11/17, IT WOULD NOT START AND THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT WAS ON. THE GEAR SHIFT WASN'T WORKING EITHER. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP I BOUGHT IT FROM BECAUSE IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, THEY GAVE ME THE NUMBER FOR ROADSIDE HELP TO HAVE IT TOWED IN, THEN AFTER SEVERAL TIMES TRYING IT STARTED, WHILE ON THE PHONE WITH THE ROADSIDE SERVICE DPT. THE NEXT WEEK ON TUE (3/14/17) IT WOULD NOT START AGAIN, THEN SUDDENLY IT DID. I WAS CLOSE TO MY JOB SO I THOUGHT I COULD MAKE IT, BUT THE GEARS WERE STUCK AND HARD TO CHANGE. WHILE PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC THE CAR I COULDN'T SPEED UP. I COULD HAVE BEEN IN A BAD ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THIS CAR!!!! THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS CAR IT IS NOT SAFE. I'M JUST GLAD I HAD DROPPED MY 4 KIDS OFF BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS A GLITCH IN THE TRANSMISSION MODULE, WELL THIS IS THE SECOND WEEK IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP. THEY CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT. WHILE GOING TO GET THE CAR SEATS OUT OF IT, THERE WAS A LADY THERE WITH HER CAR (SAME MAKE & MODEL BUT 2016) HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM SHE HAD ONLY 17,000 MILES ON HER CAR AND THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT ON IT. I THINK MINE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. MY MILEAGE IS UNDER 25,000!! THIS IS NOT RIGHT. IF THE COMPANY KNOWS THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE, THEN THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THE CAR. IT'S NOT FAIR TO CONSUMERS!!!

I PURCHASED A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE TRAILHAWK IN FEBRUARY OF 2015. IT WAS RUNNING FINE UNTIL I TOOK IT IN FOR A RECALL AND A SOFTWARE UPDATE. WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP OR YIELD, THE JEEP HESITATES THEN IT WILL LUNGE FORWARD. ON DECEMBER 8, 2015, I TOOK THE JEEP IN FOR A RECALL, THERE WAS ALSO A SOFTWARE UPDATE. AFTER THAT DATE MY VEHICLE WAS NEVER THE SAME. PRIOR TO DECEMBER 8, 2015, I HAD NO COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION. WE HAVE TAKEN THE JEEP BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP DECEMBER 29, 2015, FEBRUARY 12, 2016, MAY 23, 2016 WITH OUR CONCERNS BEING COMPLETELY IGNORED. IN JUNE OF 2016 I CONTACTED CHRYSLER AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE MY JEEP BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP HAD MY JEEP FOR 2 DAYS AND I WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. IT WAS NOT! IT CONTINUES TO LUNGE FORWARD. I NO LONGER DRIVE IT ON THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE WHEN I AM MERGING INTO TRAFFIC, IT HESITATES AND I HAVE HAD TO PULL OFF TO THE SHOULDER. I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO ENJOY THE VEHICLE THAT I HAVE INVESTED SO MUCH INTO. AFTER BEING TOLD BY THE MECHANICS AND THE MANAGER OF THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THAT I JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE....IT IS GOOD TO KNOW, I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL SOON BE FIXED

2015 JEEP CHEROKEE TRANSMISSION: WARNING LIGHT FOUR WHEEL DRIVING SYSTEM UNAVAILABLE SERVICE REQUIRED! WHEN DRIVING THE TRANSMISSION WOULD SHIFT THROUGH 2ND GEAR AND GET STUCK THERE WITH VERY HIGH RPMS, THEN SLAMMING INTO THIRD. (CITY STREET & HIGHWAY) IT ACCELERATES WHEN DOWNSHIFTING. NORMAL DRIVING, NO POWER. WHILE DRIVING LOUD WHINING SOUND FROM UNDER THE SUV. WHEN STOPPED AND IN DRIVE AND TURNING ON AC OR HEAT, THE RPMS WOULD DROP BELOW 1K AND THE SUV WOULD AUTOMATICALLY INCREASE THE RPM CAUSING IT TO LURCH FORWARD. TRANSMISSION SHIFTED RANDOMLY. THE DEALERSHIP WE LEASED THE JEEP FROM REPLACED/RECONFIGURED THE DRIVETRAIN CONTROL MODULE AND FLASH PROGRAMMED THE ECU. THEY REPLACED A DEFECTIVE TRANSFER CONTROL MOTOR. THEY CHECKED WIRING HARNESS AND CALLED A REGIONAL TECHNICIAN. ALL OF THESE "FIXES" FAILED AFTER AN EXTENDED TEST DRIVE. RT 46 CHRYSLER, JEEP, DODGE SAID THEY NOW NEED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MOTOR. THE CAR HAS BEEN AT THEIR SHOP FOR ALMOST A WEEK. CHRYSLER CORPORATE SAID THEY WILL NOT COVER CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES DUE TO DEFECTIVE PARTS UNDER WARRANTY. THE SALES MANAGER AT RT 46 CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE WOULD NOT TAKE OUR 2015 CHEROKEE AS TRADE IN FOR A NEW SUV BECAUSE HE CALLED IT A LEMON. THIS VEHICLE IS UNPREDICTABLE AND UNSAFE WHILE DRIVING. THE DEALERSHIP WE LEASED THE CHEROKEE FROM DOESN'T EVEN WANT IT BACK.

  10. Power train, Feb 25, 2017

WHILE PULLING OUT, INTO TRAFFIC, MY TIRE CAUGHT SOME ICY SLUSH. IT STARTED TO SPIN. AS I WAS ALREADY ON THE ROAD IN TRAFFIC, I GAVE IT MORE GAS TO GO. THE ENGINE REVVED. I NOTICED THE RPMS HAD PEGGED AROUND 6000+. I NOTICED NO TRACTION CONTROL, AT LEAST NOT HOW I HAVE FELT IT IN OTHER VEHICLES. I FINALLY GOT OUT IN TRAFFIC. THIS IS WHEN MY CAR WENT HAYWIRE. THE DASHED FLASHED A WARNING THAT MY CAR WAS GOING INTO SAFE MODE AND WOULD BE SHIFTING TO NEUTRAL. THEN THERE WAS A LOUD CLUNK AND IT FELT LIKE I GOT HIT FROM BEHIND. I DID NOT, ALTHOUGH I'M SURE THE PERSON I PULLED IN FRONT OF WOULD'VE LIKE TO HAVE HIT ME, AS HE WAS BLOWING HIS HORN AT ME AND FLIPPING ME OFF. MY CAR WAS NOW IN NEUTRAL AND COULDN'T GO ANYWHERE. I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AS I CAME TO A STOP MY CAR ENGAGED THE PARKING BRAKE. I WAS PANICKED AND SCARED. I TURNED OFF MY CAR. I CALLED MY HUSBAND. I TRIED TO RESTART MY CAR. IT RESTARTED BUT I COULD NOT DISENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON. THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. MY HUSBAND SHOWED UP AND THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR HE FOUND OUT THAT HE COULD ONLY DISENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE IF THE CAR WAS IN NEUTRAL. HE DROVE IT AROUND SOME AND IT SEEMED FINE. I DROVE IT TO WORK, WITH ALL THOSE DASH LIGHTS STILL ON. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND GOT MY CAR IN. WITHIN 2 DAYS THE DASHLIGHTS HAD TURNED OFF AND EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE NORMAL. I TOOK MY CAR IN AND SINCE THERE WERE NO LIGHTS ON AT THAT TIME THEY COULDN'T DIAGNOSE ANYTHING. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A SAFETY OVERRIDE AND I JUST NEEDED TO LEARN TO DRIVE IT. (I WAS LIVID, AS I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION) A VEHICLE SHOULD NOT SHUT DOWN IN TRAFFIC. LUCKILY I WAS ON A RURAL ROAD WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I COULDN'T IMAGINE WHAT COULD OF HAPPENED IF I WAS PULLING OUT ACROSS 5 LANES OF TRAFFIC OR MERGING ON TO A BUSY FREEWAY. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

STARTED WHEN SHIFTING BETWEEN 3RD AND 4TH BUT NOW DOES IT FROM 1ST TO 2ND. DEALERSHIP IS WELL AWARE, SAY THERE ARE ABOUT 2-3000 JEEPS OUT THERE DOING THE SAME THING BUT THEY WON'T FIX IT BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DOESN'T COME ON AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHICH PART IS BROKEN/FAILING.

TRANSMISSION BUCKS AND LURCHES. SLOW TO RESPOND TO GAS WHEN PULLING OUT. LOOKS FOR A GEAR WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. DANGEROUS TO DRIVE NOT KNOWING WHAT THE TRANS WILL DO OR NOT DO. TOOK IT TO 2 DIFFERENT DEALERS AND THEY CLAIM NO PROBLEMS. THE UPDATES DO NOT CORRECT THE ISSUES. IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP & TIMES FOR THIS ONGOING PROBLEM. 17. Power train, Feb 16, 2017

THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY DOWNSHIFT OUT OF 3RD GEAR WHEN COMING TO A STOP OR AT A BRIEF STOP RESULTING IN LOSS OF POWER AT TAKE OFF. TRYING TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP WHILE IN 3RD GEAR RESULTS IN SIGNIFICANT DELAY IN POWER. THIS HESITATION IS SIMILAR TO STALLING WHICH IS VERY DANGEROUS WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC. JEEP HAS STATED THAT THIS IS NORMAL AND THAT YOU MUST ALWAYS COME TO A COMPLETE EXTENDED STOP BEFORE THE TRANSMISSION WILL DOWN SHIFT. THIS IS NOT FEASIBLE WHEN A COMPLETE STOP IS NOT NECESSARY OR REQUIRED LIKE WHEN A LIGHT CHANGES TO GREEN WHEN YOU ARE COMING TO A STOP, OR YOU ARE MERGING INTO TRAFFIC WITH A YIELD SIGN. THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN, OR IS ALREADY RESULTING IN ACCIDENTS THAT ARE CLASSIFIED AS YOUR VEHICLE DIDN'T YIELD TO RIGHT OF WAY, EVEN THOUGH THIS STALL LIKE SCENARIO IS THE PRIMARY CONTRIBUTOR.

VEHICLE IS HESITATING TO FIND APPROPRIATE GEAR AT VERY LOW TO LOW SPEEDS (0-20 MPH). THE RESULT IS THE ABSENCE OF SMOOTH TRANSITION TO THE NEXT HIGHER OR LOWER GEAR AND FREQUENT ABRUPT LUNGING OF THE VEHICLE IN A FORWARD DIRECTION. I HAVE A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE SPORT 2.4L 4CYL. I BOUGHT IT NEW IN SEPTEMBER OF 2015. THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY IS FOR 36,000 MILES AND AT 41,000 MILES, MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE JEEP WOULD NOT WARM UP AND BLEW LUKE WARM AIR ON THE HOTTEST SETTING. THERE WAS ALSO A DRIPPING SOUND HEARD FROM BEHIND THE FRONT DASHBOARD. BEFORE I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS, THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL (ETC) WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. DRIVING YOUR JEEP WITH THE ETC LIGHT ON COULD LEAD TO THE COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE. I TOOK MY JEEP IN ON SATURDAY TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO CONDUCT A DIAGNOSIS BECAUSE THEY ONLY HAD LIMITED STAFF THERE FOR THE WEEKEND. THEREFOR I HAD TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE MY JEEP FOR MULTIPLE DAYS. I RETURNED ON MONDAY AND THEY CHARGED ME $80 TO RUN A DIAGNOSIS. THE RESULT WAS A FAULTY THERMOSTAT. THEY INFORMED ME THEY COULD FIX IT FOR $550-$600 DOLLARS. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THE PART WAS ON BACKORDER OF MORE THAN 50,000 PARTS ACROSS THE NATION AND IT WOULD TAKE A COUPLE WEEKS TO HAVE THE PART DELIVERED. I ORDERED THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING PART AT A COST OF MORE THAN $60. THE PART IS ONLY $20 ON-LINE FROM THEIR PART DISTRIBUTOR, BUT THEY MARKED IT UP ANOTHER $20 AND CHARGED ANOTHER $20 FOR SHIPPING. I WAS INFORMED IT WOULD TAKE 4 HOURS TO REPLACE DUE TO ITS LOCATION AT $118 AN HOUR, PLUS THE COST OF COOLANT. SINCE I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR MY PART, THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ME A VEHICLE AND THEREFOR MY JEEP HAS OVERHEATED MULTIPLE TIMES. WITH OVER 50,000 PARTS ON BACK ORDER AND THIS BEING A JEEP MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT, THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER.

WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE AS A 'CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED' AND FELT CONFIDENT THAT SINCE IT WAS 'CERTIFIED' IT WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. WE HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE SINCE AUGUST 2016 AND HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION. WE HAVE TAKEN IT TO OUR LOCAL JEEP DEALER/SHOP AND THEY SAID THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. THEY HAVE PERFORMED TWO SYSTEM UPDATES AND THOUGHT THAT MIGHT BE THE ISSUE. WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A STOPPED POSITION OR SLOWED/ALMOST STOPPED POSITION THE TRANSMISSION HAS A PAUSE. ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS WE HAVE ALMOST GOTTEN HIT BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION PAUSED. WE HAVE ALSO HAD OCCASIONS WHEN IT WILL PAUSE AND THEN JUST KICK IN AND TAKE OFF LIKE SOMEONE STEPPED ALL THE WAY DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE JEEP SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THIS IS 'NORMAL' I FEEL THIS IS ANYTHING BUT 'NORMAL'. THIS VEHICLE IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN AND I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT. *TR
