Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  4. EquipmentDec 21, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. 6. Power train, automatic transmissionJul 12, 2016

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee and 2015 Chrysler 200, Jeep Renegade, RAM ProMaster, and 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles equipped with 9-speed automatic transmissions. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S55.

MY TRANSMISSION GOES INTO NEUTRAL WHILE IN DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE SAME MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR AS MY CAR, BUT MY VIN DOES NOT QUALIFY. I HOPE JEEP WILL REMEDY THIS PROBLEM WHICH THEY KNOW EXISTS IN THIS VEHICLE. *TT UPDATED 9/28/18*JB

  2. Air bags, May 13, 2017, crash

"TAKATA RECALL." ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON 8/1/2015 AS WE WERE HEADING NORTH ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY IN TAMPA, FLORIDA. AT A MAJOR INTERSECTION, A PERSON RAN A LEFT TURN LIGHT AS WE WERE ENTERING THE INTERSECTION. WE HIT HIM ON THE RIGHT REAR OF HIS VEHICLE AT 45 MPH. NO AIRBAGS IN OUR VEHICLE DEPLOYED.

  3. Power train, May 4, 2017

THE TRANSMISSION SLIPS OR SKIPS GEARS. FROM A STOP IT HESITATES TO GO. IT REVS HIGH WHEN DOWN SHIFTING. SHIFTS HARD A LOT. WE HAVE HAD IT TO THE DEALER 2 TIMES. PROGRAMMING UPDATES WERE DONE. NO IMPROVEMENT TO ITS OPERATION. IT FEELS LIKE IT'S GOING TO FAIL SOON.

  4. Power train, May 4, 2017

SERVICE SHIFTER WARNING IS DISPLAYED. ALL LIGHT INDICATORS AT SHIFTER ARE LIT. THIS HAPPENED AT START-UP AND CONTINUED WHILE DRIVING.

  5. Other or unspecified, May 4, 2017

I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN NOTICING TWO POTENTIAL ISSUES WITH MY VEHICLE. 1) ON CERTAIN OCCASION THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL (AS THE RPM'S REV) AND THEN THE TRANSMISSION CATCHES UP A FEW SECONDS LATER SHIFTING INTO GEAR. ALSO, 2) ON CERTAIN OCCASION THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO HAVE A DELAY IN SHIFTING WHILE ACCELERATING ONTO THE HIGHWAY. WHILE NEITHER OF THESE ISSUES HAVE YET TO RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT, I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE AND THOSE DRIVERS AROUND ME. WITH THE CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION SURROUNDING THESE ISSUES WITH FCA VEHICLES, I WANTED TO REPORT THIS COMPLAINT TO NHTSA DIRECTLY.

  6. Other or unspecified, May 4, 2017

WHEN I START MY VEHICLE AND TURN ON THE KEY MY CAR WILL ACCELERATE FORWARD WITH A JOLT. SOMETIMES WHEN I STOP AND START FOR A LIGHT IT WILL QUICKLY MOVE FORWARD AND JERK....IF I SLOW DOWN THE SPEED IT WILL EXCELLERATE TOO......

  7. Power train, Vehicle speed control, May 1, 2017

TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION AT HIGH RATE OF SPEED ON INTERSTATE, LOST POWER AND ABILITY TO ACCELERATE WHILE TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE. TO REPAIR A SOFTWARE UPGRADE WAS RUN ON THE VEHICLE. I HAVE VERIFIED THAT NO RECALL EXISTED FOR MY VEHICLE DESPITE THE FACT THAT TRANSMISSION SOFTWARE PROBLEM WAS KNOWN BY CHRYSLER. SOME VEHICLES HAD BEEN RECALLED BUT MY VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INCLUDED DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT CONTAINS THE SAME 9 SPEED TRANSMISSION THAT HAS FAILED. THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED AT HIGH RATE OF SPEED ON INTERSTATE WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC AND CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT RISK OF CRASH.

  8. Air bags, Structure, Apr 28, 2017, crash

MY SON AND I WERE IN FRONT AND SIDE IMPACT CRASH WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE ON 4/24/17 WITH SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE BUT NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED IN OUR VEHICLE. ATTACHED ARE A FEW PHOTOS OF BOTH VEHICLES FOR REFERENCE. WE WERE DRIVING A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE AND WERE HIT BY A DRIVER WHO HYDROPLANED IN A 2011 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE REPORTING OFFICER ESTIMATED MY SPEED AT IMPACT WAS 40 MPH. AIRBAGS DEPLOYED IN THE OTHER VEHICLE BUT NOT IN OURS. CONSIDERING THE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, FORCE OF IMPACT AND ESTIMATED TRAVEL SPEED AT IMPACT, I FEEL THE JEEP AIRBAGS FAILED FROM A SAFETY STANDPOINT AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO GO ABOUT INVESTIGATING THIS FURTHER WITH JEEP. AN ACCIDENT REPORT IS AVAILABLE BUT DID NOT UPLOAD DUE TO THE SENSITIVE INFORMATION CONTAINED WITHIN (VIN #'S, NAMES, INSURANCE POLICY NUMBERS, ETC); HOWEVER, THE REPORT CAN BE PROVIDED UNDER SEPARATE COVER IF NEEDED.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED; HOWEVER, THERE WAS HESITATION BETWEEN THE TIME THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND WHEN THE TRANSMISSION ENGAGED. ALSO, ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THERE WAS A HESITATION AND THEN THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000.

VEHICLE NOT SHIFTING PROPERLY. WILL NOT DOWN SHIFT INTO SECOND GEAR(STAYS IN THIRD GEAR) WHEN STARTING UP STEEP HILLS OR WHEN SLOWING FOR TRAFFIC SIGNAL THAT HAS CHANGED TO GREEN BEFORE COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. STAYS IN GEAR TOO LONG WHEN ENTERING HIGHWAY ON RAMPS, MOSTLY WHEN THEY ARE ON AN UP HILL INCLINE. LOUD CLUNKING SOUND WHEN SHIFTING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE WHEN NOT MOVING. I DO NOT KNOW THE EXACT DATE THAT THIS STARTED, BUT IT WAS WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP.

  11. Power train, Apr 24, 2017

BAD TRANSMISSION; THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP; IT ALSO HESITATES WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE FROM A COMPLETE STOP; I'VE ALMOST BEEN HIT TWICE! HAS BEEN DOING THIS SINCE I LEASED THE CAR FROM 3/15/15 TO THE PRESENT! HAVE TAKEN IT BACK TO THE DEALER AT LEAST 5 TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM!

  12. Power train, Apr 24, 2017

NHTSA ISSUE 1096880. 18 APR 2017: DROVE OUT OF SIDE STREET ONTO TWO LANE HIGHWAY AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED MOVING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD MAKING OFF SOUNDS AND "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON. FOOLED WITH GEAR SHIFTER. BEGAN TO MOVE ONLY SLOWLY IN 1ST GEAR. HEADED BACK TO MY STREET AND HALF WAY STOPPED MOVING AGAIN. PUSHED OVER TO SIDE OF ROAD AND CALLED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. IT WAS A VERY SCARY AND UNSAFE POSITION TO BE IN CROSS WAYS OF A TWO LANE HIGHWAY AND CAN'T MOVE. DECIDED TO TRY AND SEE IF I COULD GET THE REST OF THE WAY TO MY HOUSE. COULDN'T GO OVER 5-10 MPH. ONE TIME RPMS RAISED HIGH AND WENT BACK DOWN. COULD NOT CLIMB DRIVEWAY TO GARAGE. HAD TO LEAVE SIDE OF THE ROAD.

ONE MORNING I STARTED THE CAR, I HEARD WATER MOVING FROM THE ENGINE AREA. WHILE, DRIVING THE CAR I HEARD A NOISE'S LIKE A PRESSURE COOKER SOUNDS. ONCE I ARRIVED AT WORK I WALKED AROUND TO THE PASSAGE SIDE TO RETRIEVE MY STAFF. I COULD SMELLED ANTIFREEZE. I CONTACTED JEEP RIGHT AWAY AND THEY CONTACT A TOW COMPANY. IT WAS DROP OFF. THE DEALERSHIP WORKED ON IT FOR A COUPLE DAYS. THEY DID PRESSURE TEST FOR EXTERNAL LEAK, DIDN'T LOCATE A LEAK. THEY DIDN'T DO A INTERNAL EXAMINE. IT'S 2 YEAR OLD VEHICLES ALREADY LEAKING ANTIFREEZE. I HAVE MY VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE BUT STILL SMELL ANTIFREEZE. TWO PRESSURE TEST LATER NOTHING. I JUST PICKUP MY VEHICLE FOR THE SECOND TIME. WHY IS JEEP VEHICLES HAVING SO MANY PROBLEM. MY PSI, TRANSMISSION AND RADIO MAKING SOUNDS WHEN ITS OFF. JEEP IS A BAD VEHICLE AND IT JUST A MATTER OF TIME, HUMANS MIGHT BE IN DAMAGE DUE TO THE UNCARING MANUFACTURING COMPANY THAT MAKES LOT'S OF MONEY OF THE BACK OF WORKING AMERICANS.

  16. Power train, Apr 16, 2017

TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED SHY OF 5,000 MILES. AFTER REPLACEMENT, I HAVE CONTINUED TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING ISSUES. 1. CAR NEVER DOWNSHIFTS FROM 3RD TO 2ND. IT WILL DOWNSHIFT TO 3RD AND THEN WILL GO INTO 1ST WHEN THE CAR STOPS. 2. ON DOWNSHIFT FROM 5TH TO 4TH AT 26MPH, RPM'S SPIKE AND CAR SURGES FORWARD FOR A SECOND OR TWO UNTIL GEAR IS ENGAGED. HAS ALMOST CAUSED WRECKS IN THE RAIN AND SNOW. 3. WHEN COMING TO A ROLLING STOP, THE CAUSE PAUSES AND WILL NOT ACCELERATE WHEN GETTING BACK INTO THE GAS BECAUSE THE CAR IS IN 3RD GEAR AND NOT IN 2ND AS IT SHOULD BE. I HAVE ALMOST BEEN REAR ENDED NUMEROUS TIMES. CHRYSLER REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THESE AS A SAFETY HAZARD AND INSTEAD STICKS TO THEIR STORY OF THAT IS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC. I ASKED IF THE TRANSMISSION WAS WORKING AS INTENDED, WHY HAVE THEY RELEASED SO MANY SOFTWARE UPDATES TO FIX THE MANY BUGS ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR TRANSMISSION. THEY DECLINED TO ANSWER. I SINCERELY WISH SOMEONE WOULD HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. *TR

TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, HARD SHIFTING. ON GOING

  19. Power train, Apr 10, 2017

THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS ROUGH IN THE LOWER 3 GEARS. THE DEALERSHIPS SHOP MANAGER TOLD US THERE IS NOT A FIX FOR IT. THERE ARE SOFTWARE UPGRADES BUT THEY DO NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD ONE UPGRADE BUT IT DID NOTHING. THE SHOP MANAGER TOLD ME THE NEWEST UPGRADE MAKE THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT FROM 1ST TO 3RD, SKIPPING 2ND. HE ALSO TOLD ME A REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION WOULD MAKE IT WORSE. 1ST GEAR: THE DRIVETRAIN ENGAGEMENT FROM A STOP IS INTERESTING. SOME OWNERS SAY IT FEELS LIKE IT CAN TAKE A FULL SECOND FROM THE MOMENT THEY STEP ON THE GAS TO WHEN THE CAR ACTUALLY STARTS MOVING. AND ONCE IT DOES START MOVING, ITS A COIN FLIP IF YOURE GOING TO STEADILY GET UP TO SPEED OR SQUEAL SOME TIRES. 2ND GEAR: ONE OF THE MOST COMMON COMPLAINTS IS HOW THE 9-SPEED HANGS OUT IN 2ND GEAR FAR TOO LONG. 3RD GEAR: WHEN THE TRANSMISSION FINALLY SHIFTS INTO 3RD GEAR IT CAN BE AN AGGRESSIVE, LURCHING TRANSITION. GOING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR IS A GREAT WAY TO FEEL WHAT WHIPLASH FEELS LIKE, WITHOUT THE INCONVENIENCE OF HAVING TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT.

I WAS DRIVING INTO WORK AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE WORDS, "SERVICE TRANSMISSION" CAME ACROSS MY DASHBOARD. I WAS COMING UP ON A RED LIGHT, SO I STOPPED FOR THE LIGHT. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I WENT TO ACCERLATE AND MY CAR WOULD BARELY MOVE. WHEN I WAS ABLE TO GET IT GOING, IT WOULD ONLY GO 10 MPH. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND CALLED AAA. WHILE WAITING ON AAA TO ARRIVE I STARTED DOING SOME RESEARCH REGARDING THE ISSUE AND SAW THAT THERE IS OR MAY BE A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE. HOWEVER, I WAS NOT NOTIFIED. I ALSO SEE THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE FROM OTHER JEEP CHEROKEE OWNERS WHO HAVE ALL EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE/CONCERN. I COULD HAVE BEEN IN A VERY SERIOUS CAR ACCIDENT. THIS NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO.
