  18. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleOct 17, 2013

Chrysler Group, LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured January 8, 2013, through August 20, 2013. Due to a disruption of computer communications and loose alternator ground wires, the affected vehicles may experience random illumination of multiple instrument cluster warning lights, loss of cluster illumination and loss of anti-lock brake system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) function. Because of these conditions, the vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 101, "Controls and Displays," and No. 126, "Electronic Stability Control Systems."

A loss of ABS and ESC function reduces the driver's ability to control the vehicle. Drivers would not be warned of brake system failures or any other failures which would be illuminated on the dashboard display. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the ABS and instrument cluster module software and tighten the alternator ground wire, free of charge. The recall began on November 19, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N58.

Without properly functioning parking lamps these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."

Without parking lamps, the vehicle may not be as visible to other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the Central Body Controller software, free of charge. The recall BEGAN ON September 12, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N42.

WHEN I TRIED TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF, THE IGNITION BUTTON FELL INTO THE DASHBOARD. I WAS ABLE TO REACH INTO THE DASHBOARD AND PRESS THE BUTTON SWITCH TO START AND STOP THE ENGINE. THE DEALER CLAIMED IT WAS THE OWNERS' FAULT BECAUSE "THE BUTTON WAS PUSHED TOO HARD" AND A REPLACEMENT HOLDING RING (NOT COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY) ENDED UP COSTING $250 PLUS TAX.

THERE HAVE BEEN MORE RECALLS THAN I CAN COUNT, BUT RECENTLY I WAS DRIVING IT AND THE ALTERNATOR (WHICH WAS RECALLED) WHEN OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING AND I HAD IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER AND LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR. I'VE HAD ANOTHER RECENT RECALL NOT THE SHIFTER AND MY STEREO RANDOMLY WENT BLACK, ALLOWING NO CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE SETTINGS OR A/C. THIS CAR IS A LEMON!

THE AIR CONDITIONING WENT OUT ON MY 2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. THE DEALER'S SERVICE WRITER IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME THAT 85% OF THE TIME WHEN THE A/C GOES OUT IN THIS VEHICLE IT'S THE EVAPORATOR INSIDE THE CAR BEHIND THE DASH. UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION BY THE REPAIR TECHNICIAN THAT'S WHAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I ASKED IF THEY REPLACE THE EVAPORATOR WITH THE SAME PART AND HE SAID NO, THEY NOW USE A DIFFERENT SKU REPLACEMENT EVAPORATOR. OBVIOUSLY, JEEP IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND HAS MADE CHANGES TO FIX IT. HOWEVER, IN MY CASE JEEP WON'T PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT SAYING MY VEHICLE WITH 45,000 MILES IS PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD. IT'S MY POSITION THAT JEEP USED A DEFECTIVE EVAPORATOR IN THE FIRST PLACE AND IT'S ONLY MY BAD LUCK THAT IT DID NOT START LEAKING FREON SOONER. APPARENTLY THE EVAPORATOR IS NOT *THAT* EXPENSIVE BUT IT IS LOCATED IN A DIFFICULT LOCATION TO GET TO, BEHIND THE DASHBOARD, AND THAT MAKES IT AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR ($1,680). I BELIEVE JEEP/CHRYSLER SHOULD PAY FOR THIS REPAIR AT A MINIMUM, AND FAILING THAT, A RECALL SHOULD BE PUT INTO EFFECT.

PASSENGER SIDE FRONT ACTIVE HEADREST DEPLOYED ON IT'S OWN, (NO COLLISION, OR IMPACT) WHILE AT A COMPLETE STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, SOUNDED LIKE A GUN SHOT, ADULT PASSENGER IS SUFFERING WITH WHIPLASH, AND TERRIFIED TO RIDE IN MY JEEP AGAIN.

MY SUNROOF EXPLODED TODAY. I WAS DRIVING AT 50 MPH, EXTERNAL TEMP. IS 30 DEGREES AND SUNNY. THERE WERE NO CARS AROUND ME TO THROW A ROCK. THERE WAS NOTHING OVERHEAD. I WAS DRIVING ON ROUTE 137 IN MAINE, A WELL PAVED ROAD IN A FAIRLY RURAL AREA. I HAD THE SHADE CLOSED, AS I ALWAYS DO. I HEARD AND EXPLOSIVE NOISE DIRECTLY OVERHEAD. THERE WAS IMMEDIATE LOUD WIND NOISE ABOVE MY HEAD. I PULLED OVER AND OPENED THE SUNSHADE. THE SUNROOF WAS SHATTERED AND THE ENTIRE CENTRAL PORTION WAS GONE. ALL OF THE SHATTERED GLASS AROUND THE EDGES WAS CONVEX, BOWED OUTWARD AWAY FROM THE CAR.

WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET AND APPROACHING A BUSY INTERSECTION, MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS STARTED IN MOTION AND THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD LIT UP FOR A BRIEF SECOND, TO INCLUDE THE BATTERY LIGHT. THE STOP LIGHT WAS RED AND I FULLY STOPPED. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I STEPPED ON THE GAS TO ACCELERATE TO MAKE A LEFT TURN INTO THE INTERSECTION WHEN MY VEHICLE MOVED MERE INCHES BEFORE IT COMPLETELY SHUTDOWN. THIS ALL HAPPENED WITHIN A MINUTE WITH NO WARNING. TWO TRUCKS ATTEMPTED TO JUMP MY JEEP, BUT ALL THAT HAPPENED WAS THE JUMPER CABLES STARTED TO SMOKE AND HEAT TO THE POINT THEY WERE UNTOUCHABLE. I HAD TO HAVE MY JEEP TOWED TO A NEAR BY CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP WHERE THE ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY FAILED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. THERE IS A SIMILAR RECALL FOR 2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES DEALING WITH THE ALTERNATOR, BUT I WAS TOLD THAT MY JEEP WAS MANUFACTURED WITH A 180AMP AND NOT THE 160AMP LISTED IN THE RECALL.

VEHICLE WAS IN PARK AND WHEN I STARTED MY VEHICLE UP I LOOKED TO MY RIGHT AND NOTICED THE ACTIVE HEADREST ON JUST THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE FAILED AND HAD EJECTED ON IT'S OWN WITHOUT BEING IN A COLLISION. I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO THE HELFMAN DODGE CHRYSLER JEEP RAM DEALERSHIP 7720 KATY FWY, HOUSTON, TX 77024. THANKFULLY, I HAVE ALWAYS HAD ONLY 1 FOOT OUT AND NOW CHECK TO MAKE SURE IT IS IN PARK EVEN THOUGH I PUSH THE ELECTRONIC SHIFTER ALL THE WAY FORWARD. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE, BUT THE LOCAL DEALER CLAIMS TO NOT HAVE THE PARTS TO FIX.

  12. Power train, Other or unspecified, Aug 14, 2016

MY JEEP WAS SERVICED TWICE FOR THE RECENT SHIFTER PROBLEM THAT CHRYSLER IDENTIFIES AS DRIVER INATTENTION OR CONFUSION. THE SOFTWARE PATCH THAT IS INTENDED TO "AUTO PARK" THE VEHICLE, HAS FAILED ON TWO OCCASIONS. THE ENGINE IS STARTED, I APPLY THE BRAKE AND PLACE THE SHIFTER INTO REVERSE OR A FORWARD GEAR. I THE DESIRED GEAR IS ILLUMINATED AND I EASE OF THE BRAKE, HOWEVER, WHEN APPLY GAS THE ENGINE SIMPLY RACES AS IF THE TRANSMISSION IS STILL IN PARK OR NEUTRAL. JEEPS ATTEMPT TO FIX A PROBLEM HAS NOW LED TO ANOTHER PROBLEM. THIS VEHICLE IS UNRELIABLE AND A DEATH MACHINE. I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN IT'S OPERATION AND I CAN'T IN GOOD CONSCIENCE SELL THIS VEHICLE TO ANYONE. JEEP CORPORATE SHOULD BE IN JAIL.

2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE WAS IN PARK, I SHIFTED IT INTO DRIVE, THE VEHICLE MOVED ABOUT 1 FOOT, AND JERKED ITSELF BACK INTO PARK. I TRIED EVERY OTHER GEAR AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. AFTER ABOUT 15 MINUTES I TRIED IT AGAIN AND IT WORKED FINE. WHEN THE TOW COMPANY CAME TO PICK IT UP, IT STARTED JERKING ITSELF BACK INTO THE PARK POSITION AGAIN, FROM EVERY GEAR ACCORDING TO THE TOW COMPANY, A FLAT BED TRAILER WAS USED TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE A REGULAR TOW TRUCK COULD NOT MOVE IT. DEALERSHIP HAS INDICATED TO ME THAT THEY HAVE FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT (JULY 6, 2016), FOR ME TO GO PICK IT UP. I DID NOTIFY THE MANUFACTURER, AND I AWAIT A RESPONSE. ALL OF THIS OCCURRED AFTER THE S27 UPDATE WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION EVEN MORE SO THAN THE PROBLEMS THAT THEY TRIED TO FIX. MILEAGE 32333. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY IN A FLAT LEVELED PARKING LOT.

ON 11/4/14 AFTER PARKING MY NEW JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE AT GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT, ON A COMPLETELY LEVEL SURFACE, AFTER PLACING VEHICLE IN PARK, EXITING AND WALKING TOWARD STORE ENTRANCE I SAW MY CAR COMING AT ME OUT OF CORNER OF MY EYE. THE CAR HAD "POPPED" OUT OF PARK AND INTO NEUTRAL, AND WAS ROLLING BACKWARDS TOWARD ME. I WAS WAITING FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE TO PASS BY IN THE PARKING LOT ON MY WAY INTO THE STORE WHEN THIS OCCURRED. MY JEEP KEPT ROLLING SLOWLY BACKWARDS TOWARDS ME. IT COLLIDED INTO A CAR PASSING THROUGH THE PARKING LOT. THE OTHER CAR HAD 3 CHILDREN IN CAR SEATS IN THE BACK SEAT. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS INJURED, BUT I WAS MORTIFIED AT THE LOOKS ON THOSE CHILDREN'S FACES, THEY WERE VERY SCARED! I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MANY YEARS & THIS WAS NOT DRIVER ERROR. MY HUSBAND AND I TRIED NUMEROUS TIMES TO RECREATE THE SCENARIO WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE WARNING ALARM SIGNAL WOULD COME ON IF THE CAR WERE NOT IN PARK AND YOU TRIED TO EXIT IT, SO I KNOW THAT IT HAD BEEN COMPLETELY IN PARK AND HAD "POPPED OUT" AFTER I EXITED. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AT VALENCIA, CALIFORNIA SUPERSTORES CHRYSLER JEEP AND TOLD THEM OF THE INCIDENT. THEY CHECKED THE CAR AND SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. THEY HAD IT FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM WITH IT POPPING OUT OF GEAR AND CHRYSLER CORPORATE SAID THEY HADN'T HAD COMPLAINTS. THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT AND TO PICK IT UP. IT IS A DEFECTIVE DEATH TRAP AND I DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT AFTER THIS INCIDENT. IN RESEARCHING THE INTERNET TO SEE IF THIS HAD HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE I CAME ACROSS A BLOG FROM 10/31/13 WHERE THE SAME VEHICLE MODEL/YEAR HAD POPPED OUT OF PARK INTO REVERSE WHICH WAS ALSO REPORTED TO CHRYSLER, YET THEY CONTINUED TO SELL THESE CARS TO THE PUBLIC. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS. THEY ARE UNSAFE AND LIVES ARE AT RISK WITH THEM ON THE ROADWAYS.

I PARKED THE CAR & PLACED THE GEAR SHIFT IN PARK. THE ENGINE WAS STILL ON. I EXITED THE CAR TO MAIL A LETTER. THE CAR SUDDENLY ROLLED BACK HITTING A CAR THAT WAS WAITING FOR MY PARKING SPOT. THE ACCIDENT REPORT STATES THE CAR WAS "DRIVERLESS". I CONTACTED THE DEALER. RELUCTANTLY THEY EXAMINED THE CAR & SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG. I ASKED HOW WAS IT POSSIBLE TO EXIT THE CAR IF IT WASN'T IN PARK. MY FOOT WOULD HAVE TO BE ON THE BRAKE OR IT WOULD ROLL. SO I COULDN'T EXIT THE CAR WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE!! OBVIOUSLY SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH THE GEAR SHIFT. IT HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN & SLIPS UNLESS THE ENGINE IS COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. I HAD NO WAY OF ENTERING THE CAR AS IT ROLLED TO PREVENT IT FROM HITTING ANOTHER CAR. IF I DID MOST PROBABLY I WOULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. TOWN & COUNTRY JEEP TOTALLY DISREGARDED MY COMPLAINT.

WHEN I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A QUICK 3 POINT TURN,I HAD DIFFICULTY GETTING THE VEHICLE INTO REVERSE BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF "FEELING" IN THE ELECTRONIC SHIFTER CONTROL. FIRST, IT WENT INTO PARK, THEN NEUTRAL. FINALLY I GOT IT INTO DRIVE BUT THE DELAY CAUSED A SAFETY HAZARD. A CAR COMING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION HAD TO MANEUVER AROUND ME.

HAD ISSUES WITH GEAR SHIFTER SINCE PURCHASE. HAD AN ACCIDENT IN A PARKING LOT. I PARKED MY CAR AND WANTED TO LEAVE IT RUNNING, PUT THE CAR IN PARK. STEPPED OUT OF MY CAR AND WALKED INTO THE STORE. I WAS ALERTED THAT MY CAR HAD BACKED ACROSS THE PARKING LOT AND HIT ANOTHER CAR. THE CAR WAS IN REVERSE. MEN IN THE PARKING LOT WERE YELLING AT ME ASKING WHY I WOULD GET OUT OF CAR WITH IT IN REVERSE. OBVIOUSLY, NOT WHAT I DID. PROBLEM SEEMS TO HAVE BECOME WORSE. IT NOW CAN TAKE 3 TRIES TO GET THE CAR ALL THE WAY INTO PARK. MY VEHICLE IS STILL DAMAGED. THE OTHER VEHICLE WAS MUCH WORSE. I MANAGED TO PUT TAIL LIGHTS ETC BACK IN TEMPORARILY. THE CORNER PANEL IS POPPED OUT ON DRIVERS SIDE WITH SCRATCHES ON REAR OF CAR. I CALLED THE TROY POLICE AND THEY SAID BECAUSE IT WAS A PARKING LOT, THEY DIDN'T NEED TO COME AND WRITE A REPORT.

WHEN I SAW THE NEWS STORY ON 3/21/16 ABOUT THE GEAR SHIFTER, IN MY 2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE, IT VALIDATED WHAT I HAD BEEN EXPERIENCING. I HAD DISLIKED THE DESIGN SINCE THE FIRST DAY I OWNED THE CAR. WHEN I SHIFTED, I WAS ALWAYS IN THE WRONG GEAR. A FELLOW JEEP OWNER SUGGESTED, I SHIFT AS HARD AS I COULD INTO PARK AND THE SAME FOR DRIVE. IT WORKED MOST OF THE TIME. I HAVE OFTEN STARTED TO EXIT THE CAR ONLY TO FIND IT WAS IN REVERSE, NOT PARK AND I OFTEN PUT IT IN PARK WHEN I MEAN TO REVERSE AS WELL AS SPORT MODE WHEN I WANT DRIVE. LUCKILY, A SIGNAL DOES GO OFF AND I CAN PUT MY FOOT BACK ON THE BREAK AND SHIFT IT INTO PARK. I HAD NEVER EXITED THE CAR AND HAD IT ROLL, BUT IT MAKES SENSE THAT SOMEONE WOULD. IT IS A HORRIBLE DESIGN AND I AM HOPING FOR A RECALL THAT WOULD MAKE JEEP REPLACE THE GEAR SHIFTER. I HAD TO ENTER A DATE THAT IT HAPPENED BELOW, BUT IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. I CANNOT ACTUALLY REPORT AN ACCIDENT/INCIDENT, I SIMPLY WANT TO VALIDATE THE THEORY THAT THE DESIGN IS FLAWED AND DANGEROUS.

WE ARE LEASING A 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE COMPONEN:T GEAR SHIFT- VEHICLE ROLLED BACK AFTER THINKING IT WAS IN PARK BUT DRIVER WAS ABLE TO JUMP BACK IN AND STOP IT ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, BUT ON ONE OCCASION, VEHICLE ROLLED BACKWARD IN A PARKING GARAGE INTO A CEMENT PILLAR AFTER EXITING THE CAR THINKING IT WAS IN THE PARK POSITION CAUSING SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE REAR AND DRIVER SIDE. NEW GEAR SHIFT DESIGN VERY TRICKY AND COULD BE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS
