Recalls and investigations

  1. Engine and engine coolingJun 8, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L Diesel engines. The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and cam shaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall.

An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 3, 2023. Some owner notification letters were mailed October 31, 2023. The remaining owner notification letters will be mailed at a future date, anticipated July 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with the 3.0L EcoDiesel engines. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler may crack and allow pre-heated vaporized coolant to enter the EGR system. This mixture may combust inside the intake manifold.

Combustion in the intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EGR cooler, free of charge. Dealers will also inspect and, as necessary, replace the intake manifold. Parts are not currently available. Owners were mailed an interim notification on December 21, 2021. 5. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. The affected vehicles, equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a monostable gear selector, may not adequately warn the driver when driver's door is opened and the vehicle is not in PARK, allowing them to exit the vehicle while the vehicle is still in gear.

Drivers thinking that their vehicle's transmission is in the PARK position may be struck by the vehicle and injured if they attempt to get out of the vehicle while the engine is running and the parking brake is not engaged.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software to mitigate the risk of vehicle rollaway, free of charge. The recall began on June 24, 2016. The affected vehicles may be equipped with rear lower control arms that may have been incorrectly heat treated. This may cause the rear lower control arm to fracture.

If the rear lower control arm fractures it may result in a change in ride height, loss of rear end stability, and reduced braking capabilities, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the lower control arms, free of charge. The recall began July 29, 2015. The affected vehicles are equipped with radios that have software vulnerabilities that can allow third-party access to certain networked vehicle control systems.

Exploitation of the software vulnerability may result in unauthorized remote modification and control of certain vehicle systems, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify and mail affected owners a USB drive that includes a software update that eliminates the vulnerability, free of charge. Optionally, owners may download the update to their own USB drive from http://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/ or take their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for immediate installation. In an effort to mitigate the effects of this security vulnerability, Chrysler has had the wireless service provider close the open cellular connection to the vehicle that provided unauthorized access to the vehicle network. RANDOM "KEY FOB HAS LEFT THE VEHICLE" MESSAGE THIS HAPPENED THREE TIMES TODAY. ALL THREE WERE WITH THE FOB IN MY POCKET AS I SAT IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT, WITH THE SECOND FOB AT HOME ON MY DESK (MILES AWAY). FIRST INSTANCE, MY HUSBAND GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND WHEN THE DOOR CLOSED I GOT AN AUDIBLE WARNING AND THE "KEY FOB HAS LEFT THE VEHICLE" MESSAGE WITH A PICTURE OF THE FOB SHOWN IN THE EVIC. BEFORE SHOUTING TO BRING THE KEY BACK I CHECKED MY POCKET AND THE FOB WAS THERE. THE MESSAGE DISAPPEARED WHEN HE RETURNED TO THE VEHICLE, BUT WE CONFIRMED THAT HE DEFINITELY DID NOT HAVE A KEY FOB ON HIM. SECOND INSTANCE, THE SAME THING HAPPENED A FEW MINUTES LATER WHEN WE DROPPED MY DAUGHTER OFF AT SCHOOL. AS SHE EXITED THE VEHICLE, THE "KEY FOB HAS LEFT THE VEHICLE" AND CHIME BEGAN. WE ASKED HER TO RETURN TO THE VEHICLE ALTHOUGH SHE DEFINITELY DID NOT HAVE A KEY FOB, BUT THE CHIME WOULD NOT GO OFF. I ENDED UP TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE AND TURNING IT BACK ON AND THE MESSAGE AND CHIME DISAPPEARED. THE THIRD INSTANCE HAPPENED LATER IN THE MORNING WHEN MY HUSBAND LEFT THE CAR (AGAIN I WAS SITTING IN THE DRIVERS SEAT WITH THE FOB IN MY POCKET). TO SUMMARIZE, THE KEY HAS BEEN IN MY RIGHT JACKET POCKET ALL THREE TIMES AND YET THE VEHICLE BELIEVES IT HAS LEFT THE CAR. IN ALL THREE INSTANCES, THE SECOND FOB (WHICH IS THE ONLY OTHER FOB) WAS AT HOME IN MY KITCHEN.

I CALLED JEEP ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND THE TRUCK WAS SCHEDULED TO BE TOWED TO THE NEAREST JEEP SERVICE CENTER ON 9/28/3015 - THE TRUCK WAS NOT DRIVE-ABLE. THE JEEP SERVICE CENTER REVIEWED MY TRUCK A FEW DAYS LATER AND TOLD ME THAT THE STEERING CONTROL MODULE HAD GONE BAD IN THE TRUCK WHICH IS WHY IT COULDN'T BE STEERED. THE 2015 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED COMES WITH PUSH BUTTON STARTING. WITH THE CAR LEFT RUNNING AND THE FOB KEY TAKEN AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE, THE CAR CONTINUES TO RUN FOR HOURS. IF IT IS NOT LOCKED, ANYONE CAN SIMPLY GET IN AND DRIVE IT AWAY TO UNLIMITED DISTANCES. IF SOMEONE PARKS THE CAR IN A GARAGE AND FORGETS TO TURN IT OFF, IT WILL RUN FOR HOURS, FILL THE GARAGE/HOUSE WITH CARBON MONOXIDE AND HAS ALREADY BEEN IDENTIFIED AS THE CAUSE OF 13 DEATHS IN THE US. THE PUSH BUTTON STARTING WAS A BAD IDEA. THE SIMPLE KEY, USED FOR DECADES, ALLOWED THE CAR TO BE STARTED, AND WHEN THE KEY WAS SHUT OFF AND REMOVED, THE CAR WAS SHUT DOWN. SIMPLE! IN MY OPINION THE PUSH BUTTON STARTING WAS A BAD IDEA AND NEEDS TO BE REVISED. IF THE FOB KEY LEAVES THE CAR, AND THE CAR IS STILL RUNNING, THE CAR ALARM SHOULD GO OFF, WARNING THE DRIVER THAT THE CAR NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN FIRST.

  23. Power train, Oct 6, 2015

LEASED CAR ON 9/4/2015. SOMEONE AT DEALERSHIP HAD BEEN DRIVING IT SO IT HAD 4800 MILES WHEN I GOT IT. ON 10/3/2015, GOT IN CAR, STARTED ENGINE, SHIFTED CAR INTO DRIVE AND IT REVVED BUT DIDN'T MOVE. SERVICE PARKING BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. I HADN'T TOUCHED THE PARKING BRAKE. TURNED CAR OFF AND ON AGAIN. SAME THING...CAR WOULDN'T SHIFT INTO GEAR, THEN GOT "SERVICE TRANSMISSION" MESSAGE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. REPEATED TURNING CAR ON AND OFF SEVERAL TIMES, SHIFTING. NO RESPONSE. TURNED CAR ON, PUT IN REVERSE. HEARD A LOUD THUNK AND THE CAR MOVED BACKWARD. PUT IN DRIVE, HEARD A LOUD THUNK AGAIN, AND CAR MOVED SLUGGISHLY FORWARD. LIMPED HOME, CAR NOT RESPONDING AS NORMAL TO PRESSURE OF GAS PEDAL, PRAYING I GOT THERE WITHOUT THE CAR DYING. CALLED SERVICE AT 8 A.M. AT 9:30 A.M., WENT TO LEAVE HOUSE TO TAKE CAR TO DEALERSHIP. BACKED DOWN THE DRIVEWAY, PUT CAR IN DRIVE, NO RESPONSE. I THOUGHT I HAD GONE DOWN MY DRIVEWAY IN REVERSE, BUT IT MUST HAVE JUST ROLLED DOWN SINCE WE LIVE ON A HILL. I TURNED CAR OFF AND ON AGAIN, PUT CAR IN REVERSE. LOUD THUNK, LIKE THE BOTTOM WAS FALLING OUT OF CAR, AND CAR LURCHED INTO REVERSE. SHIFTED TO DRIVE, ANOTHER THUNK AND LURCH. PULLED CAR TO SIDE OF STREET AND CALLED CHRYLSER ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE FOR TOW. WAITED 5 HOURS FOR TOW TRUCK WHICH CAME FROM ANOTHER STATE. REALLY?! CAR IS NOW AT DEALERSHIP, GOT CALL TODAY 10/6 THAT THE VALVE BODY ON THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND THAT IT IS A 7-10 DAY WAIT BECAUSE THE PART IS BACKORDERED. (AFTER READING ALL THESE COMPLAINTS, I NOW KNOW WHY). I'VE PAID TWO MONTHS LEASE ON THE VEHICLE, HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE IT FOR 3 WEEKS, AND 500 MILES. CURRENT MILEAGE IS APPROXIMATELY 5300.
