Recalls and investigations

  1. Engine and engine coolingJun 8, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L Diesel engines. The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and cam shaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall.

An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 3, 2023. Some owner notification letters were mailed October 31, 2023. The remaining owner notification letters will be mailed at a future date, anticipated July 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with the 3.0L EcoDiesel engines. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler may crack and allow pre-heated vaporized coolant to enter the EGR system. This mixture may combust inside the intake manifold.

Combustion in the intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EGR cooler, free of charge. Dealers will also inspect and, as necessary, replace the intake manifold. Parts are not currently available. Owners were mailed an interim notification on December 21, 2021. 4. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. 6. Electrical system, Engine, Mar 24, 2023

While driving dashboard displayed “shift to P then desired gear.” I stopped on the side of the road. Placed vehicle into park and tried to turn off the vehicle. The vehicle wouldn’t turn off, Displayed “vehicle not in park” Then I placed the vehicle into drive and the dashboard displayed again “shift to P then desired gear.” I was unable to turn off the vehicle no matter what gear I had it on. The check engine light was on, also the service 4WD, service shifter and the stability control. The vehicle also wouldn’t drive forward or reverse. At one point wouldn’t even park. The engine was stuck running for almost 3 hours until I was able to get someone out to pull a plug to shut the engine off. A diagnostic test was done while all the lights listed previously were still on. And no code would appear on the screen. Vehicle was towed and awaiting service.

The contact was able to continue driving; however, the vehicle lost 4-WD functionality. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while driving and the vehicle was shuddering significantly. The contact was able to drive to his residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the power transfer unit (PTU) had failed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer referred the contact to the dealer for a diagnostic test. The dealer was contacted, and an appointment was scheduled. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 61,050.

  9. Power train, Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Feb 10, 2023

When driving the vehicle it's like the transmission is slipping through the first few gears then all of a sudden it takes off. if you try to accelerate it just winds up and then bang it takes off. when coming to a stop it downshifts hard. When driving around a corner you slow down your foot off the pedal, then when you get through the corner you go to accelerate again and it has a dead spot, no power, it's like it died and you have nothing then again it takes right off. Really dangerous, I first thought the car was dead, with no power but then it takes off like a rocket. It acts worse when the start-stop button is depressed so that the engine stops at red lights or when the vehicle comes to a stop. If you turn that off the vehicle seems to run a little better but still cuts out. Almost like someone flicking a light switch off and on with the power of the vehicle. The dealership says they are booked out until March 25th to even take a look at it.

  10. Vehicle speed control, Forward collision avoidance, Jan 20, 2023

I was driving back home and was travelling at around 30miles/hr on a street. All of a sudden my car dashboard started flashing and all the indicators in the dashboard started to flash.. The vehicle started to accelerate and brake at the same time... The engine made a strange weird sound. I had to put the emergency parking lights and pull over slowly. Luckily I was closer to home, so drove back home with the hazard lights on.. The car moved very slowly with the engine accelerating and braking at the same time. Next day, I had the car towed to the dealership and they also saw the same issue. They indicated the Throttle Control Module was behaving erratically and have to re-flash it.

  11. Other or unspecified, Jan 13, 2023

I was driving this vehicle on a sunny 38 degree day on the highway when my front sunroof exploded. The glass was broken upwards, no rock or debris hit the glass. It spontaneously shattered.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the battery and window switch; however, the failure persisted. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not yet notified. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

  13. Engine, Dec 21, 2022

Early engine wear on 3.6L v6. Heavy rocker arm and lifter noise.

  14. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Dec 12, 2022

My car recently started making a grinding noise that got bad really fast. I had it towed to the dealership to get a diagnostic test done. I was told that it was my transfer case that was making the noise. Now this caught me by surprise because I had no warning lamps on my dashboard or no messages alerting me of any problems that would point to it needing servicing done it just happened out the blue. Because of this problem my car has a hard time accelerating and this is no good to me because I live in Atlanta Georgia where there is nothing but Highway and hills. My car makes a constant grinding noise no matter how fast I’m going or how hard I press on the gas. With the acceleration of the vehicle being bad I have almost been in a few incidences where people have almost rear ended me. An inspection by the manufacturer has not been done as of yet. I would just like to know what can be done about this especially because my car STILL has no warning lamps and the grinding is so bad that I can no longer drive it.

  15. Fuel/propulsion system, Dec 9, 2022

I am having difficulty pumping gas the pump continually shuts off. I Am upset that during snowstorm to get home i was unable to fillup causing me to get stranded. I thought the nhtsA was here to ptotect us.

  16. Engine and engine cooling, Nov 29, 2022

The contact owns a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, the engine would not turn over. The contact stated that numerous attempts were made before the vehicle started. The contact stated that the check engine and Stop/Start lights were illuminated. The contact had driven the vehicle to an Auto Parts store where it was diagnosed and determined that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V699000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 109,000.

  17. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Nov 22, 2022

The UConnect touch screen in my vehicle is “delaminating” causing phantom touches to the touch screen. This is an extreme safety hazard due to it causing distractions to the driver when attempting to use the touch screen/radio/etc for its intended purpose. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by Jeep to my knowledge. The component has not been inspected. There were no warning signs.

  18. Seats, Nov 11, 2022

I was sitting in my car and my active rest deployed for no reason

  19. Electrical system, Oct 28, 2022

When ever i move the steering wheel neck the traction control, the windshield wiper will not turn off. The signal lights and the back up line guide line will not work. When i took it to the shop i was told i fuse blow 3 times. And they don't know why. I think this is a defective system. And needs to be recalled asap

  20. Engine, Oct 13, 2022

Purchased the car brand new back in 2017. In 2020, while driving normally, the car loss power and would not accelerate and started to have rough idles then auto stop/start came on followed by check engine. Brought it to the mechanic for diagnose and told me that there is a misfire on cylinder 2 and VVT sensor needs to be replaced. Brought it to the dealer and they fixed the issue. Two years after (present) at 100K miles, The car started to have the same issue. Yes it was high mileage but it was driven responsibly along with timely and proper maintenance from the dealer. The car started to have rough starts and white smoke on cold start. And on August 26, 2022 the car would not start. Got it towed to the dealer and told me that it has a bad starter. I was quoted for almost $2000. Once they got it to start after 3 weeks, they noticed the white smoke, the diagnosed it and told me that It has a blown head gasket. The car was driven responsibly and never overheated. They quoted me for $4600 just for the head gasket replacement. They still have my car and haven't decided what to do as it is very frustrating to think that in a short period of time, the car just gave up on us and will leave a huge hole in our pocket. It is our family car and now realized that Jeep (FCA/Stellantis) don't care about their customers because I have seen the same exact reports like mine. I don't get why it's not a recall yet. Please! Make this a recall because it's leaving families to have more financial hardship because of faulty engines that Jeep brand created.

  21. Engine, Sep 25, 2022

THE 2014 - 2017 Jeep grand cherokee as well as many other chrysler mad 3.6lL v engines are all either past their standard warranty period or are approaching it. The problem i have specifically is that my car has under 50 k miles and i have a receipt showing it was bought in november of 2017, there for still under Jeeps powertrain warranty, and the headgasket is failing. ive been to multiple accredited mechanics before taking the vehicle to jeep how performed all the necessary test to concludits the gasket needs to be replaced. i then took it to a dealership who said " On thes 3.6L engines it extremely common for this to happen." i was then quoted 3k for the repair and dropped my car off. after 2 weeks of them having my car and me calling daily for updates i was finally told the car needs a new motor. which would cost 11k. I denied and called chrysler claims department who told me its out of warranty and I would have to pay out of pocket for the repairs before they would look into "how much they might be able to reimburse me" after searching online I've noticed this is a huge problem for many people. it seems as though Chrysler made an engine that will last 50 k miles and then have catastrophic engine failures. you might timed obsolescence. any way i hope this issue is looked into because this company, Chrysler is putting thousands of middle class Americans out of a vehicle or potentially into debt. hope to hear back soon [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

  22. Seat belts, Sep 19, 2022

back seat outer seat belt stopped working / no retracting on its own.

  23. Engine, Sep 15, 2022

As I slow down close to a stop the car loses all power. The car will coast along with no power. I have to verve to the side of the road. The car has no power to accelerate . If I shut off the engine the computer reboots and everything is fine. I have submitted this problem to Jeep and nhtsa previously. I bought this car new from the dealer in 2017 and have had this problem starting in year one. Jeep updated the software back then. It only occurs about 1-2 times a year, but causes a very dangerous issue when it occurs.
