Recalls and investigations

  1. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchMay 28, 2020

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2018 Nissan Altima vehicles. If the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, there is an increased likelihood that the secondary hood latch may corrode over time.

Corrosion to the secondary latch may cause it to bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. If the primary latch is inadvertently released again and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a stronger release spring in the hood release lever, a warning label near the secondary hood latch, and an Owner’s Manual addendum card with instructions on how to lubricate and maintain the secondary hood latch mechanism, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 30, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: Recall 16V-029 remains open for any unremedied 2013-2015 Altimas and this recall applies to all vehicles covered by 16V-029 even if those repairs have already been performed.

  2. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationDec 19, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima vehicles manufactured January 3, 2013, to July 29, 2013, 2015-2016 Rogue vehicles manufactured October 14, 2014, to August 12, 2016, and 2016 Maxima vehicles manufactured June 4, 2015, to August 19, 2015. An incorrect Occupant Classification System (OCS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may have been installed in the front passenger seat. The incorrect ECU and seat combination may misclassify the front passenger seat occupant.

If the front passenger seat occupant is misclassified, the air bag may deploy incorrectly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ECU and update the OCS software free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  3. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationApr 26, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.

If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

  4. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchJan 22, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima vehicles manufactured March 6, 2012, to December 31, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

These vehicles were previously included in recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116, however the previous remedy plan may not have been performed consistently to remove the safety risk. To correct this issue, Nissan will re-notify all affected owners and dealers will replace the hood latch with a new one, free of charge. The recall began on February 17, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116.

  5. Air bags, frontalOct 20, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima and Pathfinder vehicles, 2013-2014 Nissan Sentra vehicles, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles, 2014-2015 Infiniti QX60 vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The affected vehicles received an incorrect occupant classification system (OCS) control unit during a repair. These OCS control units may incorrectly classify the front passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.

If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  6. Fuel system, gasolineAug 4, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) notified the agency on July 31, 2015, that they are recalling certain model year 2016 Nissan Maxima vehicles manufactured February 10, 2015, to August 18, 2015. On October 14, 2015, Nissan expanded the recall to cover an additional 41,388 vehicles, including certain model year 2013-2015 Altima 3.5 vehicles equipped with a V6 engine manufactured March 30, 2012, to August 18, 2015 as well as the vehicles covered by the July 31, 2015 notification. In the affected vehicles, due to an improperly installed o-ring that may not have been seated correctly at the time of assembly, fuel may leak during a crash from the area where the fuel sending unit attaches to the fuel tank.

If fuel leaks from between the fuel sending unit and the tank, it may increase the risk of a fire in the event of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a retainer ring between the fuel tank and the fuel sending unit. The recall began on September 28, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima vehicles manufactured March 1, 2013, to December 31, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will be instructed to modify the bend angle of the hood actuation lever to eliminate potential interference with the hood inner panel. In addition, dealers will clean and lubricate the latch joint as needed. If significant corrosion is observed, the latch assembly will be replaced. This repairs will be performed free of charge. AND TODAY JUNE 10 2017 IT JUST STOPPED I HAD TO PUSH IT INTO A SAFE AREA AND AGAIN I HAD IT TOWED HOME. I PURCHASED THE LAST MAY 2016.

EASTBOUND MASS PIKE, CONSTRUCTION BARREL IN LEFT LANE, STRUCK WITH FRONT LEFT BUMPER. FOG LIGHT SMASHED & BUMPER CRACKED. TRAVELING AROUND 45-50 MPH, NO CONSTRUCTION SITE IN THIS AREA.

  9. Air bags, May 23, 2017

WE BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE OF THE OCS RECALL AND THEY REPROGRAMMED THE SYSTEM BUT IT DIDN'T SEEM TO FIX THE ISSUE, WITHIN THE YEAR WE HAD TO REPLACE BOTH OCS SENSORS AND HAVE IT REPROGRAMMED AGAIN. I DO NOT FEEL THEY MET THE INTENT OF THE RECALL AND WOULD LOVE TO KNOW IF THIS ISSUE IS/WAS COMMON AND WHAT IF ANYTHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT.

  10. Visibility/wiper, May 17, 2017

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR CONDITIONING UNIT FAILED TO DISPENSE COOL AIR. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE AIR COMPRESSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE AIR COMPRESSOR WAS PREVIOUSLY REPLACED THREE TIMES, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT WAS GIVEN THE OPTION TO GO TO ANOTHER DEALER TO ENSURE THAT THE FAILURE BE RESOLVED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

  11. Power train, May 12, 2017

ON APRIL 29, 2017 WHILE SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT, THIS VEHICLE STALLED AT A BUSY HIGHWAY INTERSECTION AND COULD NOT BE MOVED, WHEN THE CVT TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. AFTER CONTACTING NISSAN I WAS TOLD THAT IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY THE $5000 FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION. I HAVE ONLY OWNED THIS CAR FOR 1 YEAR AND IT HAS LESS THAN 80,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE THE DOCUMENTATION THAT THE CVT WAS REPROGRAMMED AT 24,781 MILES. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THE NISSAN CVT TRANSMISSIONS, AND EVEN THE WARRANTY ON 2010 HAS BEEN INCREASED THE 120,000, BUT NOT THE 2013. IT IS A SHAME THAT I HAD A 2005 NISSAN WITH OVER 200,000 MILES AND IT STILL RAN GREAT, BUT UNFORTUNATELY I SOLD IT TO BUY A NEWER NISSAN, EXPECTING THE SAME RELIABILITY. I HAVE CURRENTLY BEEN WITHOUT THIS VEHICLE FOR OVER A MONTH. THIS 2013 ALTIMA WAS PREVIOUSLY A LEASED VEHICLE AND HAS HAD ALL NECESSARY MAINTENANCE PREFORMED, BUT NISSAN IS STILL NOT STANDING BEHIND THEIR VEHICLE. IS IT GOING TO TAKE A DEATH CAUSED BY THE CVT BEFORE NISSAN WILL AGREE THEY ARE A FAULT? I HAVE HAD OVER $200 IN TOWING EXPENSES ALONE PLUS THE INCONVENIENCE OF NOT HAVING A VEHICLE FOR SUCH A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. NISSAN SHOULD BE ASHAMED TO PUT THEIR NAME ON A TRANSMISSION THAT HAS SO MANY ISSUES. IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET TO TALK TO A NISSAN REPRESENTATIVE AND I AM CURRENTLY MAKING PAYMENTS ON A USELESS VEHICLE.

  12. Other or unspecified, May 10, 2017

MY VEHICLE HAS A KNOWN RECALL. I REPORTED IT THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP ON RITCHIE HWY IN GLEN BURNIE MARYLAND IN JUNE OF 2016. I WAS TOLD THEY WOULD GET BACK TO ME. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING AND PAYING FOR A SAFETY HAZARD FOR ALMOST 1 YEAR. PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS ISSUE.

  13. Electrical system, May 10, 2017

THE NISSAN ALTIMA STARTS THROUGH A TECHNOLOGY CALLED "PUSH TO START". WHEN I GET INTO MY VEHICLE, THE DASHBOARD SAYS "KEY ID INCORRECT". THIS STARTED HAPPENING SHORTLY AFTER MY CAR WAS PROGRAMMED FOR AN AIRBAG RECALL AT THE DEALERSHIP. THE CAR WILL NOT START SINCE YOU NEED THE KEY TO START THE CAR. THERE IS NO MANUAL WAY TO START THE CAR, AND IF THE KEY IS NOT RECOGNIZED FOR TOO LONG THE CAR HAS STOPPED DRIVING WHILE IN MOTION. LASTLY, THE CAR WILL NOT LOCK WHEN YOU ARE INSIDE AND THE KEY ID IS NOT BEING RECOGNIZED. IF YOU ARE IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION THIS CAN BE PROBLEMATIC.

  14. Air bags, May 10, 2017

PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT DOES NOT SENSE PASSENGER SITTING IN SEAT TO TURN AIR BAG ON (INTERMITTENTLY) AND AIRBAG LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY ON ON THE DASHBOARD YET NO CODES HAVE BEEN SHOWN WHEN MECHANIC TRIED TO PULL CODES. LIGHT IS ON CONSTANT WHEN IN MOTION OR STATIONARY. PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT SOMETIMES SENSES, OTHER TIMES IT DOES NOT.

  16. Power train, May 9, 2017

AT A STOPLIGHT AT A BUSY INTERSECTION, THE CAR STALLED. WHEN PUT IN GEAR IT DIES. AFTER HAVING IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, I WAS TOLD THAT THE CVT TRANSMISSION WAS BAD. THE VEHICLE HAS 60,080 MILES AND THE WARRANTY IS GOOD TO 60,000 MILES.

  17. Power train, May 9, 2017

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION STOPPED WORKING WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THE FAILURE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PREVIOUS RECALL REPAIR THAT WAS COMPLETED ON THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER A WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE RECALL DETAILS WERE NOT PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 153,000.

  18. Power train, May 7, 2017

IN JANUARY OF 2017 MY CAR HAS STARTED HAVING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. THE TRANSMISSION WOULD JERK AND AS HIGHER SPEEDS WERE BEING PURSUED IT HAD DIFFICULTY REACHING IT. MY CAR EVEN COMPLETELY DIED. I TOOK TO A LOCAL SHOP WHO TOLD ME WHAT IT WAS. I DECIDED TO LOOK ONLINE AND SEE IF I WAS THE ONLY ONE WITH THE PROBLEM. TO MY SURPRISE THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON MY TRANSMISSION THAT WAS EFFECTIVE DECEMBER 08, 2016. I WAS NOT AT THIS POINT IN TIME GIVEN A RECALL NOTICE OF ANY SORT. ACTUALLY I NEVER RECEIVED THE NOTICE UNTIL MARCH 13. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED MY DEALERSHIP TO BRING IN. AS I WAS BRINGING IT IN IT WOULDN'T REACH SPEEDS OVER 25 MPH. THE RECALL STATES THAT CONTINUING TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE WITHOUT THE RECALL PERFORMED CAN LEAD TO ACCELERATED WEAR ON THE CVT TRANSMISSION. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE CAR HAD BEEN DELIVERED IN THE TIME FRAME NECESSARY, BUT THAT MY TRANSMISSION WAS NOW DEAD AND WOULD COST ME $4000!!!! NOTE: STILL PAYING PAYMENTS ON THIS CAR. SO, ANYWAYS I"VE BEEN SENT THROUGH PHONE LINES AND HUNG UP ON TO NO END. I WENT BACK TO DEALERSHIP AND ASKED THEM FOR A DIAGNOSIS ON MY TRANSMISSION. I WANTED TO KNOW HOW IT COMPLETELY DIED. THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T DIAGNOSE TRANSMISSIONS THERE. SO I THEN SAID WELL YOU TOLD ME THIS RECALL DID NOT CAUSE MY TRANSMISSION DAMAGE. I SAID SO YOU ACTUALLY DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS IN FACT THE PROBLEM. THE GUY AGREED WITH ME! THEY THEN BROKE DOWN AND LET ME HAVE THEIR BOSSES NUMBER WHO APPARENTLY NEVER GIVES THIS NUMBER OUT. I HAD TALKED TO HER PREVIOUSULY AND SHE WAS NO HELP FOR ME. NOT EVEN SYMPATHETIC NOR OFFERING ME A REASON. I ALSO ASKED THE DEALERSHIP TO REPAIR THE RECALL. THEY REFUSED. I AM AT A LOSS. ITS BEEN THREE MONTHS WITHOUT MY CAR. I STILL PAY ON IT! I AM DEVASTATED AND DON'T KNOW WHO CAN HELP ME!

PURCHASED A NEW 2013 ALTIMA FOR ALMOST 40,000 AND SINCE THE BEGINNING THE CAR AIR BAGS HAS WORKED ONLY IF YOU ARE SITTING ON YOUR SEAT BEFORE YOU START THE CAR. BIG SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE WE NOTICED ONCE ON THE FREEWAY WHEN HE HAD TO BRAKE HARD THAT THE AIRBAGS WERE OFF , I COULD HAVE DIED. HAD NISSAN ENGINHEER TEST IT AND THEY TOLD ME I JUST NEED TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND THEN ON AFTER A NEW PERSON BOARDS THE CAR, RIDICULOUS. I NEED HELP AD NOBODY WILL DO ANYTHING. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR SAVE YOURSELF! TOLD THEM WE DID NOT PURCHASE A CAR WITH A MAJOR SAFETY PROBLEM LIKE THIS AND NISSAN WONT FIX THIS. IT HAS BEEN 4 YEARS NOW. WE HAVE PAPERS THAT SHOW HOW MANY TIMES WE HAVE CALLED AND BROUGHT THE CAR IN AND NOTHING. HIRING A LAWYER IS OUR NEXT STEP

  21. Power train, Apr 30, 2017

GEAR SHIFT IS STUCK IN PARK. USING A PENCIL TO PUSH THE SHIFT RELEASE BUTTON IS THE ONLY WAY TO SHIFT IT INTO GEAR. LOCAL MECHANIC NOTED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH NISSAN ALTIMAS.

  22. Other or unspecified, Apr 30, 2017

I CLOSE MY TRUCK OF MY CAR AND THE WINDOW JUST SHATTERED. I WENT INTO THE HOME WHERE I WAS. WE CALLED A NEIGHBOR A MAN TO COME. HE SAID IT WOULD BE FINE TO DRIVE HOME. IT WOULD NOT FALL IN HE SAID. WE COULD CONTINUE TO HEAR IT CRACKING. IT WAS 74 DEGREES OUTSIDE. ANOTHER PERSON SAID THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN A BACK WINDOW SHATTER BEFORE. SINCE IT WAS DARK WE COULD NOT KNOW IF SOMETHING FELL ONTO IT. NOTHING BUT DARK SKIES AND STARS ABOVE. SOMEONE TOUCH IT AND IT FELL IN. SO I PUT A SUN VISOR IN THE BACK TO CATCH THE FALLING GLASS. WE ALL WAS SHOCK. THEY ALL THOUGHT WITH THE HEATER COILS IT WOULD NOT FALL IN OR WITH THE PROTECTIVE COATING LIKE TINT WOULD HOLD IT. STRANGE I DROVE HOME 20 MPH. COVERED AND NOW I HAVE TO WAIT BECAUSE IT NEEDS TO BE ORDERED AND I HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. PLEASE HELP. I WAS IN N.C, 27870 ON 514 DAVIE ST. ABOUT 9:30 PM. ON 04-29-17
