Recalls and investigations

  1. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchMay 28, 2020

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2018 Nissan Altima vehicles. If the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, there is an increased likelihood that the secondary hood latch may corrode over time.

Corrosion to the secondary latch may cause it to bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. If the primary latch is inadvertently released again and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a stronger release spring in the hood release lever, a warning label near the secondary hood latch, and an Owner’s Manual addendum card with instructions on how to lubricate and maintain the secondary hood latch mechanism, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 30, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: Recall 16V-029 remains open for any unremedied 2013-2015 Altimas and this recall applies to all vehicles covered by 16V-029 even if those repairs have already been performed.

  2. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationDec 19, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima vehicles manufactured January 3, 2013, to July 29, 2013, 2015-2016 Rogue vehicles manufactured October 14, 2014, to August 12, 2016, and 2016 Maxima vehicles manufactured June 4, 2015, to August 19, 2015. An incorrect Occupant Classification System (OCS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may have been installed in the front passenger seat. The incorrect ECU and seat combination may misclassify the front passenger seat occupant.

If the front passenger seat occupant is misclassified, the air bag may deploy incorrectly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ECU and update the OCS software free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  3. Air bags, sensor, occupant classificationApr 26, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.

If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

  4. Latches/locks/linkages, hood, latchJan 22, 2016

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima vehicles manufactured March 6, 2012, to December 31, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

These vehicles were previously included in recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116, however the previous remedy plan may not have been performed consistently to remove the safety risk. To correct this issue, Nissan will re-notify all affected owners and dealers will replace the hood latch with a new one, free of charge. The recall began on February 17, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116.

  5. Air bags, frontalOct 20, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima and Pathfinder vehicles, 2013-2014 Nissan Sentra vehicles, 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles, 2014-2015 Infiniti QX60 vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The affected vehicles received an incorrect occupant classification system (OCS) control unit during a repair. These OCS control units may incorrectly classify the front passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.

If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  6. Fuel system, gasolineAug 4, 2015

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) notified the agency on July 31, 2015, that they are recalling certain model year 2016 Nissan Maxima vehicles manufactured February 10, 2015, to August 18, 2015. On October 14, 2015, Nissan expanded the recall to cover an additional 41,388 vehicles, including certain model year 2013-2015 Altima 3.5 vehicles equipped with a V6 engine manufactured March 30, 2012, to August 18, 2015 as well as the vehicles covered by the July 31, 2015 notification. In the affected vehicles, due to an improperly installed o-ring that may not have been seated correctly at the time of assembly, fuel may leak during a crash from the area where the fuel sending unit attaches to the fuel tank.

If fuel leaks from between the fuel sending unit and the tank, it may increase the risk of a fire in the event of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a retainer ring between the fuel tank and the fuel sending unit. The recall began on September 28, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Nissan Altima vehicles manufactured March 1, 2013, to December 31, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will be instructed to modify the bend angle of the hood actuation lever to eliminate potential interference with the hood inner panel. In addition, dealers will clean and lubricate the latch joint as needed. If significant corrosion is observed, the latch assembly will be replaced. This repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 31, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 14V-565.

In the affected vehicles, interference between the hood inner panel and the secondary latch lever, in combination with debris and corrosion, may cause the secondary hood latch to bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

Nissan is recalling certain model year 2013 Altima, LEAF, Pathfinder, Sentra, and Infiniti JX35 vehicles. Sensors within the passenger Occupant Detection System (ODS) may have been manufactured out of specification. This may cause the system to malfunction and permanently suppress the passenger airbag.

If the vehicle is involved in a crash necessitating airbag deployment and the passenger airbag is suppressed, there may be an increased risk of personal injury.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ODS sensors and replace them as neccessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 6, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY DOING ABOUT 40MPH AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CARE SEEMED AS THOUGH IT HAD PROBLEMS SHIFTING OUT. THEN WHEN I STOP THE CAR HESITATED TO TAKE OFF AND THEN WHEN IT DID TAKE OFF IT JERK AND THE TOOK OFF. WHEN I GOT HOME I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND STARTED IT BACK UP IT DROVE FINE, BUT LATER THAT DAY WHEN I DROVE IT STARTED TO DO IT AGAIN AND THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. *TR

  2. Structure, Oct 13, 2014

DRIVING THE 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA AT APPROXIMATELY 6:30AM, GOING APPROX 10-15 MILES PER HOUR THE HOOD UNEXPECTEDLY FLEW OPEN. THE CAR WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE HOOD CLOSED. THE IMPACT OF THE HOOD FLYING OPEN BENT BACK METAL NEAR THE WINDSHIELD ON BOTH FENDERS AND THE BUMPER WAS SCRAPED HITTING A CURB OR SOMETHING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. DUE TO THE EARLY HOUR THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT OR INJURY AS NO OTHER CARS WERE ON THE ROAD. IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED 15 MINUTES LATER, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY GOING 60 MPH. PHONE CALLS WERE MADE TO NISSAN AND AS WELL, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO COCHRAN NISSAN (DORMONT, PA). IN BOTH INSTANCES WE WERE TOLD THAT THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH THE HOOD LATCH AND NISSAN WOULD NOT PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS. ODDLY THOUGH, THE DEALERSHIP WAS WILLING TO PROVIDE US A NEW HOOD LATCH AT NO COST (WOULD HAVE TO PAY LABOR TO INSTALL). I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THEIR ADJUSTER CLEARLY FOUND FAULT WITH THE HOOD LATCH AND IN AN UNSCIENTIFIC TEST THAT HE PERFORMED, THE HOOD FAILED 9 OUT OF 9 TIMES. CALLS WERE AGAIN MADE TO NISSAN WITH THIS INFORMATION AND WE WERE TOLD 'SORRY'. THEY WERE NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGES TO THE HOOD, BOTH FENDERS AND FRONT BUMPER. EVEN THOUGH WE WERE INFORMING THEM OF ALL THE REPORTS WE HAD FOUND ON THE INTERNET OF THE SAME THING HAPPENING ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH 2013 NISSAN ALTIMAS. WE WERE TOLD THAT MOST LIKELY WHAT HAPPENED WAS THE HOOD RELEASE WAS USED INSTEAD OF THE GAS TANK DOOR RELEASE, AS THESE 2 RELEASES ARE RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER. (DOES SOMEONE SEE ANY FAULT IN THAT?). THE CLAIM FOR APPROX $2700 WENT AGAINST MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND I WAS ISSUED A CHECK FOR $2200 TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. GIVEN THE NEWS ON THE RECALL I WILL BE WORKING WITH MY INSURANCE COMPANY TO RECOVER THE $2700. *TR

  10. Power train, Electrical system, Sep 23, 2014

I PURCHASED A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA IN JULY 2014 WITH 36,000 MILES. ABOUT 3 WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT INTO THE LOCAL NISSAN DEALER TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULDN'T FIND THE SOURCE AND IT WOULD REQUIRE FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC TESTING FOR $80. I DISAGREED AND LEFT. TWO DAYS LATER, MY DAUGHTER AND I WERE TRAVELING ALONG INTERSTATE 10 WHEN SUDDENLY THE CAR WOULDN'T ACCELERATE. AS I MERGED OVER TO THE LEFT LANE, EVERY LIGHT ON THE DASH CAME ON AND THE ENGINE WENT DEAD JUST AS I MADE IT TO THE SHOULDER. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND WAITED 10 MINUTES BEFORE I ATTEMPTED TO START IT UP AGAIN. THE FOLLOWING DAY, I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO MY LOCAL NISSAN DEALER. AT THAT POINT, THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION THAT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BUT THEY WOULD NEED TO ORDER A REPLACEMENT PART. I WAS WITHOUT A VEHICLE FOR 3 DAYS WHEN I RECEIVED A CALL THAT THE CAR WAS READY. I SENT MY MOTHER TO PICK UP THE CAR BECAUSE I WAS AT WORK. THEY DIDN'T PROVIDE ANY REPAIR SUMMARY TO SHOW WHAT REPAIRS WERE MADE. FAST FORWARD THREE WEEKS...MY FAMILY WAS TRAVELING TO MOBILE, ALABAMA TO DEPART FOR OUR ANNUAL WALT DISNEY WORLD TRIP, WHEN YOU GUESSED IT...THE CAR WOULDN'T ACCELERATE ALTHOUGH MY FOOT WAS LITERALLY ON THE GROUND. I PULLED OVER ONCE AGAIN AND DIDN'T TRY TO START THE ENGINE AGAIN FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES. THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON EVERY SINCE. I HAVE CONSTANTLY FOUGHT WITH THE SELLER (BOB TYLER TOYOTA) ABOUT RETURNING THIS VEHICLE. I SOLD A 2006 HONDA ACCORD EX-L WITH 176,000 MILES TO PURCHASE THIS LEMON. IT IS AN ABSOLUTE CLUNKER. WILL SOMEONE PLEASE SUGGEST OTHER OPTIONS FOR ME??? *TR

  11. Air bags, Sep 22, 2014

SUMMARY: THIS VEHICLE WAS RECALLED IN LATE MARCH 2014 TO FIX THE PROBLEM OF THE PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY, CREATING A SAFETY PROBLEM FOR ADULTS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE CAR WAS SERVICED WITH THE SOFTWARE FIX. IT FAILED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. BOTH THE DEALERSHIP, DICK SMITH NISSAN ON FERNANDINA ROAD, COLUMBIA, SC, AND NISSANUSA STATE IT CANNOT BE FIXED AND ?THERE?S NOTHING MORE THEY CAN DO.? ADULT FRONT-SEAT PASSENGERS, INCLUDING A 160-POUND MALE REMAIN UNSAFE. DETAILS: WE SAW THE PROBLEM EARLY IN THE LEASE AND ASKED THE DEALER ABOUT IT. WE WERE TOLD (1) THE ADULT PASSENGER IS IN FACT UNSAFE WHILE THE LIGHT IS ON; (2) THE PROBLEM WAS THE OWNER?S WEIGHT (110) BECAUSE SENSORS THOUGHT SHE WAS A CHILD; (3) THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE BECAUSE ANALYSIS OF THE DATA FROM THE CAR?S COMPUTER DID NOT INDICATE A MALFUNCTION, AND THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. WE RETURNED TO THE DEALER TWO MORE TIMES ABOUT THIS WITH THE SAME OUTCOME. THEN THE RECALL WAS ISSUED, AND THE CAR WAS SERVICED WITH A SOFTWARE FIX ON 5/5/14. THE PROBLEM RECURRED. AMONG OTHER EVENTS, THE LIGHT CAME ON TWICE WITH A 160-POUND MAN IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. I HAVE A PHOTO OF ONE OF THESE EVENTS TAKEN ON SATURDAY EVENING, 9/13/14. WE HAVE TRIED TO ENGAGE BOTH THE DEALER AND NISSANUSA IN DIALOGUE ABOUT FIXING OUR CAR OR GETTING ANOTHER THAT IS SAFE. THEIR RESPONSE, ECHOING ONE ANOTHER: ?THE PROBLEM CAN?T BE REPLICATED, SO IT CAN?T BE FIXED. THERE?S NOTHING WE CAN DO.? CONCLUSION: WE HAVE A CAR THAT IS UNSAFE FOR ANY ADULT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, AND THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIXABLE, AND NOBODY WILL DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WE SHOULD NEITHER BE STUCK WITH A CAR ALREADY ADMITTED TO BE PERMANENTLY UNSAFE, NOR BEAR THE COST OF GETTING RID OF IT. *TR

THE PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF LIGHT COMES ON SOMETIMES WHEN AN ADULT IS RIDING IN THE SEAT. THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALER SERVICE DEPT. 4 MONTHS AFTER THE PURCHASE WITH THIS COMPLAINT. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES AFTER WITH A TOTAL OF FOUR TRIPS TO THE SERVICE DEPT. INCLUDING THE RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS STILL HAPPENING. THIS ISN'T JUST AN INCONVENIENCE BUT A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. EITHER NISSAN IS IGNORANT OF HOW TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM OR THEY JUST DON'T CARE SEEING AS HOW THIS PROBLEM AFFECTS SEVERAL NISSAN MODELS AND ALSO INFINITI. *TR

  13. Air bags, Seat belts, Sep 10, 2014

THE AIR BAG DEACTIVATED WARNING LIGHT CAME ON WHILE THE PASSENGER SEAT WAS OCCUPIED. THE NISSAN DEALER HAD THE CAR FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES AND SAID THAT IT WAS FIXED. THE LIGHT CONTINUED ON AND OFF TO COME ON FOR THE NEXT 8 MONTHS. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG .... JUST FINE WITH ONLY ONE ERROR CODE IN THE SYSTEM AND THAT WAS FROM THE FIRST TIME. THE CAR IS NOW HOME AND THE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON AND OFF FOR PERIODS OF BETWEEN 5 MINUTES AND A FEW HOURS TWICE SINCE. IT CLEARLY IS NOT FIXED AND THEY HAD NO SUGGESTION FOR ME EXCEPT TO BRING IT BACK WHEN THE LIGHT STAYS ON FOR A LONG PERIOD (WHICH IT DOES NOT). SOME SERVICE HUH ? *TR

THE PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON INDICATING THAT THE AIR BAG IS OFF EVEN WHEN THERE IS A PERSON IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER FIRST ON MAY 28, 2013 AND WAS TOLD THE COMPUTER WAS RESET AND IF I CONTINUED TO HAVE A PROBLEM THEY WOULD INSTALL A NEW SENSOR. WHEN I RETURNED WITH A PROBLEM I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD NEED TO CONTACT NISSAN CUSTOMER AFFAIRS. I ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THEM BY PHONE AND THEN SENT A LETTER TO NISSAN CUSTOMER AFFAIRS ON AUGUST 30, 2013. AN ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WAS MADE BY THE DEALER ON SEPTEMER 12, 2013 BUT I AM STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE ISSUE. I WAS TOLD THAT EVEN THOUGH THE LIGHT INDICATES THAT THE AIR BAG IS OFF IT WOULD DEPLOY IF THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT. I AM NOT CONVINCED. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM BUT AS EARLY AS YESTERDAY AUGUST 28, 2014 THE LIGHT WAS ON FOR ALMOST 50 MILES INDICATING THAT THE AIR BAG WAS OFF WHILE MY WIFE WAS SITTING ON THE PASSENGER SEAT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG AND SEAT BELT WARNING SENSORS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER CLEARED THE CODES, BUT THE FAILURES RECURRED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED ACCORDING TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V138000 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); HOWEVER, THE REMEDY FAILED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES, BUT THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO REMEDY THE FAILURE. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD NOISE WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,919.

MY WIFE'S VEHICLE WAS STOPPED ON I-95 ABOUT A CAR LENGTH BEHIND A MINIVAN THAT HAD ALSO STOPPED FOR DEBRIS IN THE ROAD, A TOYOTA PICKUP TRUCK HIT THE REAR OF HER CAR AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 60MPH PUSHING HER CAR INTO THE MINIVAN IN FRONT OF HER AT A SPEED OF AT LEAST 30MPH, THE SRS AIRBAG IN HER CAR FAILED TO DEPLOY AND QUITE POSSIBLY THE SEATBELT AS WELL. MY WIFE STRUCK HER HEAD ON THE VEHICLE'S LEFT SIDE ROOF SUPPORT BEAM AND SUFFERED A CONCUSSION, WHIPLASH AND OTHER LESSER DEGREE INJURIES AS A RESULT. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING NISSAN HAS HAD ISSUES WITH SRS FAILURES IN 2013 ALTIMAS. *TR

WE HAVE TRIED TO HAVE NISSAN FIX OUR PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG AT LEAST 3 TIMES (ONE INCLUDING FOR A SAFETY RECALL ISSUED) AND THE PROBLEM IS STILL OCCURRING. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED THE SENSOR ONCE AND REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER SYSTEM TWICE. THE MOST RECENT TIME THIS OCCURRED IS THE DATE ABOVE. THE AIRBAG IS OFF WHEN I AM SITTING IN THE SEAT AND I AM A 130 POUND FEMALE. THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN EVERY TIME I AM IN THE PASSENGER SIDE BUT IT COULD BE OFF ON A TRIP 15 MINUTES AWAY FROM MY HOUSE AND ON THE WAY HOME IT COULD BE ON. WE HAVE NOTIFIED THE DEALERSHIP THAT THIS STILL OCCURS AND WE MET WITH WHAT THEY SAID WAS ONE OF THEIR "BEST TECHNICAL EXPERTS" AND WERE TOLD THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH OUR VEHICLE AND THEY WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE IT IS WORKING TO MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATIONS. THEY SAID IT COULD BE THE WAY I AM SEATED IN THE SEAT OR THE TYPE OF ROAD WE ARE DRIVING ON. WE HAVE MULTIPLE VIDEOS OF ME IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, SITTING UPRIGHT, WITH THE LIGHT ON STATING THAT MY AIRBAG IS OFF. *TR
