  9. Engine, Sep 27, 2023

I purchased my truck used in November 2022. After I purchased the vehicle, about a day or two later my wife said she continues to heat a ticking sound coming from the engine bay area while idling. I started the vehicle up and heard the exact same sound. I subsequently took it to my mechanic for a diagnostic test and he said my truck and many many more come to him with the same problem and it is very common. The problem was defective exhaust manifold bolts that break off prematurely into the engine block leaving owners with a costly repair of $1200 or more depending on how many bolts are broken, if one side or both sides are damaged, and the difficulty of the repair. I had broken bolts on both sides of the engine. The manufacturer knew about this issue and failed to conduct a recall. My truck also failed the emissions test. Now Ram is preparing to discontinue the Hemi engine and replace it with the 6 cylinder Hurricane engines in future Ram light trucks.

  10. Engine, Sep 27, 2023

As many have mentioned already. I have had to have the passenger side exhaust manifold bolts replaced along with manifold due to heat warpage. Now at 88k the ticking from exhaust leak has returned. The same bolts have broken and dealer is now telling me that I have to replace the head due to the bolt not being able to be extracted. I feel as if the customer shouldn't be responsible for this known issue after purchasing an 60K truck at the time in 2017. 2 issue all with less than 90K and truck is not abused.

  11. Steering, Sep 26, 2023

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle intermittently experienced a loss of power steering assist. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.

  12. Electrical system, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 25, 2023

Fuel sensor failure causing check engine light to activate

  13. Engine, Sep 22, 2023

The exhaust manifold bolts broke on my truck. There was a recall for this, but my VIN wasn’t included. However it’s the same problem as the recall

  14. Suspension, Sep 20, 2023

While hard accelerating from a stop light and towing a moderately loaded trailer (~ 3,000 lbs), I felt the turbo engage and heard a loud bang and felt the rear end get wobbly. The truck pulled violently to the right and I instantly lost accelaration and heard something dragging on the concrete, I coasted into the left turn lane and got out to find my driveshaft had broke at the rear differential yoke and was resting on the ground, still attached to the transfer case. I hopped back in and put it in 4wd to power the front tires to limp to a safe location about 100 yards down the road. Upon closer inspection both upper control arm ends that attached to a frame via a bushing broke causing the differential to rotate to the point the rear u-joint yoke broke off the drive shaft. I called a dealer but the repair time was > 1month so I repaired it myself by replacing both control arms (with Moog aftermarket arms) and a new Mopar drive shaft. Upon closer inspection both control arm ends had poor weld quality (poor weld fusion) where the bushing loop attaches to the control arm shaft. They should not have failed given the normal driving and the low miles on the vehicle. This is definitely a manufacturers defect that could have caused a serious accident had the loss of control caused the vehicle to swerved into oncoming traffic. I still have the defective part if needed for closer inspection/testing. This incident was shared with FCA recalls but was not covered nor were they interested in the issue. I also have pictures on my phone that would upload properly but i could send in an email...

  15. Engine and engine cooling, Sep 19, 2023

The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the head of the exhaust manifold bolt was fractured on both sides, causing hot fuel to leak onto the engine. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

  16. Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 17, 2023

While driving home from school with my wife and kids, my vehicle died in the highway at about 55 mph. I almost got rear ended by the vehicle behind me. I was lucky to roll it out to the side of the road without getting in a accident. Had the vehicle towed to a mechanic shop and was informed that the cp4 pump had failed and the whole fuel system was contaminated. I bough the truck 8 months ago, and still owe over 25 thousand dollars on it. This is my daily driver. I can’t afford paying for a broken vehicle. Had to borrow a car from family temporarily to use for everything. I don’t know where to get help with this case. Please help.

The "Service Power Steering" message was displayed. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: RQ23003 (Steering). The failure mileage was approximately 55,500. The VIN was invalid.

  21. Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 3, 2023

Mount for gas tank strap rotted and front fuel tank strap came off leaving fuel tank hang down. Luckily did not fall out of truck. This issue has had recalls on other model years but not 2017 which was a carryover model year so don’t understand why not. Could have been a very dangerous issue. Also a very expensive repair. I have never seen an issue with fuel tank falling out of vehicles that are not very old. This truck has only 60,400 miles also.

  22. Fuel system, Diesel, Aug 30, 2023

The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact indicated that the vehicle experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN tool confirms parts not available.

  23. Steering, Vehicle speed control, Service brakes, Aug 29, 2023

Driving approx. 45 mph when truck lost acceleration. Truck began making clanking sound and check engine light came on and electronic throttle control light. Almost got into an accident due to someone almost rear ending me and then had to coast into a parking lot when I lost total control of all steering and almost hit a parked car. Truck would not restart, had to call for a tow back home that was 150+ miles because no dealerships close by would accept vehicle or had availability. Truck taken to local Dodge dealership and diagnosed with high pressure fuel pump failure and the eta for parts for a fix are unknown at the time. Have been without a truck or car for 2 weeks now, have 4 kids and both me and my wife work full time and now only have 1 car to get around in because the truck had to be diagnosed first before a rental could be granted, if they even give me one. Still waiting to hear back about getting a rental and been 2 weeks without a truck.

  24. Steering, Electrical system, Aug 24, 2023

Me and my girlfriend were driving down a 2 lane highway and my ram 1500 suddenly lost power steering ability and spun out of control because the steering was very hard to steer at 55 mph. Lucky I was able to start the truck back up and slowly try to drive to a pullout with no steering help.. My girlfriend and I were very scared but grateful that our lives spared. Prior to this incident there were no warnings or signs of electronic power steering failure. After pulling away from the road shoulder we were able to drive slowly home as we we’re about a mile from home warming lights on the instrument cluster and chiming “Service Power Steering!” The truck is out of warranty so I could not afford to have the dealership repair the power steering problem.

  25. Steering, Aug 24, 2023
