Recalls and investigations

  1. Visibility, windshield wiper/washer, switch/wiringOct 17, 2013

Toyota Motor Engineering & manufacturing North America, Inc. (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Camry and Camry HV, model year 2013 Avalon and Avalon HV and model year 2014 Corolla vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the windshield wiper switch assembly may short circuit. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, No. 104, "Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems."

A short circuit could cause inoperative windshield wipers, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper switch assembly, free of charge. The recall began on November 8, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

  2. Electrical systemOct 17, 2013

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.

A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE, 2AR-FXE. 134,000 miles. The car burns a quart of oil every 2,000 miles. This issue is from the low-tension piston rings sticking up and leading to scarring of the cylinder walls, causing oil consumption. Toyota had this issue with the 2007 2AZ engine and fixed it, but hasn't done a thing about the 2AR engine with the same problem. Hundreds and thousands of owners have complained but Toyota does not care enough to solve the problem! TOYOTA DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOU, they only care about themselves and the money they make for charging people thousands of dollars for short blocks out of the owner's pocket for an issue that is not the owner's fault. The car has had 5,000/6 month mile oil changes all its life. Don't buy a 1AR/2AR-equipped Toyota if you expect it to last. It also has a VVT-i rattle problem that is very common that Toyota doesn't bother to fix for their customers.

  3. Engine, Jun 5, 2023, fire

We purchased Toyota Camry in 2013. Currently, it has a mileage of less than 100K. We regularly serviced it at Landers Toyota dealership, and the last maintenance was performed a week before the accident. Driving home from work, my wife heard a bang and felt a jolt after which she was forced to stop. There were no warning signs. The car was filled with smoke and seconds later the flames appeared from underneath the car (luckily, she managed to escape without injuries). I towed the car to the garage for inspection and a large (about 4-5 inches) and wide (about 1 inch) crack was found on the engine. I contacted my insurance rep and the adjustor will inspect the vehicle within 1-3 business days.

I am sending this msg in regards to my 2013 Toyota Camry SE that I leased and decided to purchase after the lease ended from Toyota Heritage in Catonsville. I am experiencing problems with my torque converter. This is an issue that Toyota knew that would happen to my car and now that I am experiencing this problem Toyota doesn’t feel that they are responsible for the fix since the warranty has expired. I notice this problem in February 2019 when driving to work every morning at the same spot it felt like I was driving on the edge of the road. I figured it was road damage, because it would happen at the same spot every morning curve in the road. On March 16, 2019 due to COVID-19 we were sent home to work from home until Feb 2022. I wasn’t driving my car much due to COVID. We are now back in the office 1 day a week. In July 2022, I had my brakes done by a licensed mechanic and I informed him about the issue I was experiencing and he told me it was my torque converter, his mother has the same issue with her 2013 Camry and Toyota is aware of the problem and not paying for the repair l. In Oct or Nov, I took my car to Heritage Toyota in OM for my usual maintenance and I informed the advisor of the issue and he stated it’s my torque converter and the warranty has expired and I will be responsible for the $2000 repair. I never received the letter they claimed was sent and no one can send me proof of the letter that they was sent to me. I can’t understand how Toyota is not responsible for this problem they knew would eventually would happen and when asked why didn’t they fixed it when I was bringing my car in for maintenance I was told because I did not report there was a problem. I told the advisor it wasn’t a problem then, I am experiencing the problem now. He didn’t have an answer. I even called Toyota Corp and getting the same reply. I am now thinking my transmission is going up due to this issue. Please help me!! Thank you.

I had this car for 5 months, the dealer lied to me about the engine being repaired, the coverage he has on the vehicle. The electronic doesn't work front driver/ passenger doors, we have to unlock the back doors to get into the car and hop over to the front. The hood doesn't have a holder to keep the hood up on its own, the electrical sound blows out and I had to buy more wires and sound system to equip. The day it started tripping, first was when the car didn't start, it made an awful clicking noise. I got a jump it started. I decided to buy new battery; however, the check engine light is on, and check service soon light on. I checked to see if there was any oil, there's no oil. I called the dealership advise him of the problem and he blows me off as if it's not his concern. I'm extremely upset because I trusted that his word to sell me a good and no bad conditions car. I have me and my friends with me along driving, my friend said, "C car is smoking", I looked in the mirror, oh my God I see white thick smoke from the back. I immediately pull over to look at the problem. I can't drive. I called my insurance to get the car tolled to my home. I called the dealers, I had no good help from him at all. I'm out of a car what to do? My wife called Toyota company to tell them what going on and to get the Maintenace history (tune up, spark plugs and oil change). The dealer & the lender didn't want nothing to do with this car, I'm so hurt because I've been deceived for my money. He did the contract the way he wanted, and lenders company to continue to report a fraud contract on my credit report. I have less than time to turn the car back or continue to pay for a broken car. My wife side the car its safe anymore to continue to drive or put any more money into a car you didn't damage. Who is responsible, the manufacturers said they can't help me it's passed the mile; I have to pay out of pocket. This contract is all a lie the amount value and work. I need help with to

THE CAR HESITATES WHEN YOU PUSH THE GAS AT AROUND 20 TO 25 MPH.

  11. Steering, Vehicle speed control, Engine, Jun 9, 2018

FOR THE LAST WEEK MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN RANDOMLY STALLING OUT INTERMITTENTLY. THERE HAVE BEEN NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS, CODES OR OTHER ISSUES. ON THE MORNING OF JUNE 9TH 2018 MY VEHICLE CONTINUED ACCELERATING WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE PEDAL. IT BARELY STOPPED CAUSING ME TO GO OVER A CURB DAMAGING BUMPER AND BRAKE CALIPER. I AM NOT DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND IT CANNOT BE LOOKED AT UNTIL JUNE 13

  12. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Apr 30, 2018

CAR SEEMS TO HAVE SLIGHT FUEL FEED PROBLEM - YOU CAN FEEL THE CAR SLIGHTLY HESITATING SOMETIMES WHEN JUST DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, WHEN PULLING OUT ONTO BUSY BOULEVARD, AFTER YOU HAVE PULLED HALF WAY OUT IN THE ROAD, THE CAR WILL NOT GO, EVEN THO YOU ARE STEPPING ON THE GAS. THIS IS VERY SCARY, BECAUSE THE OTHER CARS ARE COMING AT YOU, AND THEY ARE EXPECTING YOU TO MOVE ON OUT OF THE WAY. THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT: IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN MOSTLY AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN A LITTLE BIT, LIKE GOING TO THE STORE, THEN CAR SITS FOR AWHILE, THEN YOU GET BACK IN AND DRIVE, AND THAT IS WHEN IT HAPPENS.

  13. Air bags, Other or unspecified, Engine, Sep 6, 2017, crash

UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION ON JANUARY 30, 2017, AT 7:50 AM, MY CAR EXPERIENCED UA IN MY OFFICE PARKING LOT AT 4917 WATERS EDGE DRIVE, RALEIGH, NC 27606 WHILE BACKING INTO A PARKING SPACE. MY CAR INCREASED SPEED, KNOCKING DOWN A WOODEN RETAINING WALL AND ATTEMPTING TO CLIMB A HILL. I THEN AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS WAS ABLE TO PLACED THE CAR IN DRIVE ONLY TO HAVE IT SHOOT ACROSS THE PARKING LOT, T-BONING A CAR ENTERING AND KNOCKING IT ON THE SIDEWALK WHILE I CONTINUED ONTO THE YARD. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO PLACED CAR IN DRIVE AND THE MOTOR CONTINUED TO REV UNTIL AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS WAS ABLE TO SHUT IT DOWN. OF NOTE, NONE OF MY CAR'S AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. HOWEVER, THE OTHER VEHICLE'S BOTH SIDE PASSENGER AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. I WENT ON LINE AND REPORTED MY PROBLEM TO TOYOTA WITH PICTURES AND POLICE REPORT THE NEXT DAY. THEY ASKED FOR A WRITTEN CONSENT TO ALLOW THEM TO GET THE DATA RECORDER. AFTER NUMEROUS CALLS TO FOLLOW-UP, ON MAY 12 I RECEIVED A RESPONSE THAT WHEN THEY DROVE THE VEHICLE EVERYTHING WAS FINE.

  14. Vehicle speed control, Engine, Nov 10, 2016

WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP THE VEHICLE WILL SOMETIMES MOVE ABOUT 10 FEET AND THEN HESITATE FOR ABOUT 1 TO 2 SECONDS. IT WILL THEN ACCELERATE NORMALLY

  15. Power train, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 21, 2015

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

  16. Steering, Engine, Jul 21, 2015

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND THE VEHICLE WOULD VEER TO THE SIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TWO FRONT TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE TIRES WERE REPLACED. HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN STARTING THE ENGINE, THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE PRESENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 41,912. MA 9/22

  17. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Jun 22, 2015

I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 26MPH INTO AN INTERSECTION AND MY CAR STARTED SLOWING DOWN FOR NO REASON. AS I ENTERED THE INTERSECTION, I STARTED PUSHING DOWN ON THE ACCELERATOR TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF THE OTHER MA 10/22/2015 CARS TRYING TO GET THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. AS I KEPT PUMPING ON THE ACCELERATOR MY TRANSMISSION APPARENTLY DOWN SHIFTED INTO A LOWER GEAR AND THE CAR TOOK OFF IN A GIANT LEAP FORWARD, ALMOST BROAD SIDING THE CAR THAT WAS PASSING IN FRONT OF ME. MY CAR HAS CONTINUALLY STALLED MANY TIMES SINCE THEN. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO TOYOTA WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR, THEY SAID THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING BEFORE. I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO DO NOW? UPDATED 10/26/2017*CN

  18. Engine and engine cooling, Power train, May 18, 2015

HESITATION OCCURS WHEN ACCELERATING ACROSS AN INTERSECTION OR PULLING INTO TRAFFIC, USUALLY FROM A STOPPED POSITION. CAR INITIALLY STARTS THEN HESITATES & FEELS LIKE IT WILL SHUT OFF. TO GET ACROSS THE INTERSECTION YOU NEED TO "FLOOR IT" WHICH MAKES THE ENGINE "ROAR" BUT LITTLE ACTION FOR ALL THE NOISE. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES IN 2 YRS (ESTIMATED DATE & MILEAGE FOR 1ST OCCURRENCE). SOMETIMES THERE ARE LONG STRETCHES BETWEEN OCCURRENCES. IT IS DANGEROUS & I LACK CONFIDENCE AT TIMES TO PULL OUT. THE TECHNICIAN DIDN'T EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM WHEN MENTIONED ON 2 STOPS AT THE DEAL FOR AN OIL CHANGE. TORQUE CONVERTER SOFTWARE UPDATE MADE NO DIFFERENCE. MY PREVIOUS CAMRY NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM.

  19. Power train, Engine, Mar 8, 2015

ON A COLD START, THE ENGINE SOUNDS ROUGH FOR ABOUT A SECOND OR TWO. GRINDING TYPE NOISE. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM THE NORMAL WARM-ENGINE START-UP SOUNDS. ALSO, THE ENGINE DOES NOT SOUND RIGHT FOR ABOUT THE FIRST MILE OR SO AFTER A COLD START, SORT OF A WHINING NOISE FROM THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. CLEARLY AUDIBLE WHEN LIGHTLY REVVING BETWEEN 1500-2000 RPMS. ALTHOUGH TSB-004-13-A HAS NOT YET BEEN EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE 2013 CAMRY, IT SOUNDS A LOT LIKE THAT EXACT ISSUE MAY BE AFFECTING THE 2013S. THIS 2013 WAS BUILT IN THE SAME PLANT AS THE 2010-12 CAMRYS THAT ARE PART OF THE TSB. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER TWICE AND WAS TOLD THAT 'THESE SOUNDS ARE WITHIN THE NORMAL RANGE OF NOISES AN ENGINE CAN MAKE'. I DISAGREE. THE VEHICLE NOW HAS 37K MILES ON IT, I AM HOPING IT WILL BE FIXED PRIOR TO THE EXPIRATION OF THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY (60K). *TR

WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP THE VEHICLE WILL SOMETIMES MOVE ABOUT 10 FEET AND THEN HESITATE FOR ABOUT 1 TO 2 SECONDS. IT WILL THEN ACCELERATE NORMALLY. ONE TIME THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO ABOUT 20 MPH AND THEN THE ENGINE RPM RETURNED TO IDLE. THE ACCELERATOR WAS PUSHED TO THE FLOOR AND THE RPM REMAINED AT IDLE. THE ACCELERATOR WAS RELEASED AND PUSHED DOWN AGAIN. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED NORMALLY. THIS HAPPENED ONLY ONE TIME. THE INTERMITTENT HESITATION IS VERY DANGEROUS WHEN TRYING TO CROSS A BUSY INTERSECTION WHEN THE CROSS TRAFFIC IS UNCONTROLLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE PROBLEM. THE TECHNICIAN COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE CONDITION. THE U760E TORQUE CONVERTER SHUDDER RECALL UPGRADE WAS PERFORMED. THIS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID THAT THE TECHNICIAN SAID THAT SOME TRANSMISSION HESITATION WAS NORMAL. THE SERVICE ADVISOR ALSO SAID THERE HAD BEEN OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS CONDITION. THERE ARE ALSO COMPLAINTS ON THE ONLINE AUTOMOBILE FORUMS. THIS CONDITION IS DANGEROUS AND NOT NORMAL. *TR

THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED ON OCTOBER 14, 2014 AT APPROXIMATELY 2PM. I WAS LEAVING MY DENTIST'S PARKING LOT. I BACKED OUT OF MY PARKING SPOT, STOPPED AND WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE, THE CAR SHOT BACKWARD AT A VERY HIGH RATE OF SPEED. TO AVOID HITTING THE BUILDING I TURNED THE WHEEL SHARPLY, BUT COULD NOT AVOID HITTING A PARKED CAR. DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE WAS ALMOST $3000. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO TOYOTA AND THEY DID AN INSPECTION ON MY VEHICLE AND SAID THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG SO I MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ACCIDENT.

  22. Engine and engine cooling, Structure, Jan 5, 2015

ANYTIME DURING WARM WEATHER WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER HAS BEEN/IS BEING USED THERE IS A DISGUSTING FOUL MILDEW ODOR IMMEDIATELY UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR IS NAUSEATING AND CAUSES HEADACHES. EVERY TIME THE CAR IS DRIVEN, I HAVE TO TURN ON THE HEAT AND PUT ALL THE WINDOWS DOWN FOR ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES TO GET RID OF THE ODOR. APPARENTLY THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH CONDENSATION FROM THE AC NOT DRAINING PROPERLY. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND SEVERAL SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ONLINE. SOME DEALERSHIPS CLAIM THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS ISSUE, WHILE OTHERS ADMIT THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF IT BUT THAT TOYOTA HAS NO "FIX" FOR IT. BREATHING IN MOLD IS A SAFETY CONCERN. THIS DOES NOT OCCUR IN THE WINTER WHEN AC IS NOT USED. *TR

WITHIN TWO OR THREE DAYS AFTER THE 10,000 MILE CHECK-UP(JULY 3,2014) MY WIFE AND I NOTICED A STAGNANT ODOR COMING FROM THE A/C VENTS ON FIRST START UP IN THE MORNING. A/C HAD BEEN SET ON RECYCLE AIR. WE SET THE A/C TO RUN WITH AIR FLOW ON VENT AND ODOR IS STILL THERE. A/C RAN FOR AWHILE AND ODOR WOULD GO AWAY. ODOR JUST GOT WORSE ON EVERY START UP. CARRIED TO TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHERE WE PURCHASED CAMRY AND LET THE SERVICE MANAGER SMELL THE ODOR COMING FROM THE A/C VENTS AT 8 AM JULY 20, 2014. HE SAID HE COULD SMELL IT. THE SERVICE DEPT. KEPT THE CAMRY JULY 20 AND 21. I TALKED WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER AROUND 3:20 PM ON THE 21. HE SAID TOYOTA TECH. DEPT. HAD SENT THEM A BULLETIN STATING TO CHANGE THE CABIN AIR FILTER WITH A CHARCOAL LINED CABIN AIR FILTER AND TO RUN THE A/C ON VENT FOR AWHILE BEFORE SHUTTING ENGINE DOWN SO A/C SYSTEM COULD DRAIN. JULY 24TH., SERVICE DEPT. INSTALLING CHARCOAL LINED CABIN AIR FILTER. SERVICE DEPT. SAID A/C SYSTEM WOULD HAVE TO DRY OUT WHEN ASKED ABOUT MOLD AND BACTERIA BUILD UP. THIS PROBLEM HAS NOT REALLY BEEN ADDRESSED BY SERVICE DEPT. EXCEPT FOR TURNING ON CAR HEATER TO DRY A/C SYSTEM OUT. ODOR DID NOT GO AWAY. MY WIFE DROVE CAMRY ON A TRIP JULY 12-14, 2014 WHERE SHE DROVE FOR SEVEN AND A HALF HOURS EACH WAY. SIX DAYS LATER SHE DEVELOPED A SEVERE SORE THROAT. SHE WENT TO OUR LOCAL DOCTOR ON JULY 23RD. HE GAVE HER A STEROID SHOT AND SAID IT COULD BE RELATED TO THE ABOVE PROBLEM BUT WAS NOT STREP THROAT. WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE BUILD UP OF MOLD AND BACTERIA. *TR
