Recalls and investigations

Toyota Motor Engineering & manufacturing North America, Inc. (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Camry and Camry HV, model year 2013 Avalon and Avalon HV and model year 2014 Corolla vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the windshield wiper switch assembly may short circuit. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, No. 104, "Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems."
A short circuit could cause inoperative windshield wipers, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper switch assembly, free of charge. The recall began on November 8, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Electrical systemOct 17, 2013
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.
A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Factory paint is peeling off. It is a known issue and Toyota won't do anything for me.

I attempted to open my car door and the door handle simply snapped off in my hand. This is the second time this has occurred. The first time, my driver's door handle snapped off when a technician at my Goodyear repair shop tried to open it. Now, the exact same thing happened to my passenger driver's side door when I went to open it. Upon closer inspection, it seems that the manufacturing is defective, as the handle seems to have been simply glued on in spots rather than more securely attached. Bear in mind that this car is barely driven more than twice a week; it barely has any wear and tear and is under 80,000 miles despite 12 years of use.

I had this car for 5 months, the dealer lied to me about the engine being repaired, the coverage he has on the vehicle. The electronic doesn't work front driver/ passenger doors, we have to unlock the back doors to get into the car and hop over to the front. The hood doesn't have a holder to keep the hood up on its own, the electrical sound blows out and I had to buy more wires and sound system to equip. The day it started tripping, first was when the car didn't start, it made an awful clicking noise. I got a jump it started. I decided to buy new battery; however, the check engine light is on, and check service soon light on. I checked to see if there was any oil, there's no oil. I called the dealership advise him of the problem and he blows me off as if it's not his concern. I'm extremely upset because I trusted that his word to sell me a good and no bad conditions car. I have me and my friends with me along driving, my friend said, "C car is smoking", I looked in the mirror, oh my God I see white thick smoke from the back. I immediately pull over to look at the problem. I can't drive. I called my insurance to get the car tolled to my home. I called the dealers, I had no good help from him at all. I'm out of a car what to do? My wife called Toyota company to tell them what going on and to get the Maintenace history (tune up, spark plugs and oil change). The dealer & the lender didn't want nothing to do with this car, I'm so hurt because I've been deceived for my money. He did the contract the way he wanted, and lenders company to continue to report a fraud contract on my credit report. I have less than time to turn the car back or continue to pay for a broken car. My wife side the car its safe anymore to continue to drive or put any more money into a car you didn't damage. Who is responsible, the manufacturers said they can't help me it's passed the mile; I have to pay out of pocket. This contract is all a lie the amount value and work. I need help with to
Seat belts, Structure, Sep 14, 2022
1. The seatbelts in the back seat doesnt not work. It is not strapping and clicking. I am unable to properly strap in my nephew's carseat properly. This not a dealership issue this a manfacturer issue and it needs to be recalled. God forbidden that I get into an accident with my nephew in the car. 2. Recently the car handles on the driver's side both of broken off from the car. I am unable to open my car properly. I dont understand why it broke off I didnt pull on it hard one day it just came 3. The child lock option doesnt work one day I was driving on the high way and my nephew was open to open the back door with the child lock button on. These are major issues that need to be investigated and recalled. 4. The door on the passenger side in the back does not open from the inside. Again dangerous because what if there is a fire and my passengers can't get out.

THE MOON ROOF GLASS OF TOYOTA CAMRY 2013 HYBRID EXPLODED (WITH A BOMB LIKE SOUND) AND WAS SHATTERED TO PIECES, WHEN DRIVING ON A 4-LANE HIGHWAY AT 60 MPH, ON A PARTLY CLOUDY DAY AT AROUND 4:00 PM. NORMAL TRAFFIC WITH LIKE SIZED VEHICLES, NO OTHER VEHICLE IN THE ADJACENT LANES, NO LARGER VEHICLES IN THE PROXIMITY.

I LIKE TOYOTAS AND HAVE TWO CAMRYS. I PREVIOUSLY HAD 3 TOYOTAS. USUALLY THEY ARE VERY GOOD, BUILT WELL, UPKEEP GOOD, LAST LONG AND TOYOTA STANDS BEHIND THEM, USUALLY. A LITTLE OVER A YEAR OF HAVING THE LAST TOYOTA CAMRY SE, I NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE BUMPER POPPED OUT. ONE GOOD HIT TO THE CORRECT SPOT AND IT FELL IN PLACE, FOR A WHILE, THEN IT WOULD CONSISTENTLY POP OUT MORE FREQUENTLY. I LIVED WITH IT FOR A WHILE, THEN ONE DAY I WAS AT TOYOTA FOR A RECALL OF SOMETHING ELSE AND I ASKED IF I COULD BUY A CLIP TO CORRECT THE BUMPER FROM POPPING OUT. THEY SAID THEY DON'T HAVE THEM AND PROBABLY THE WHOLE BUMPER, WHICH WAS GOOD OTHERWISE, WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THEY HAD ME TALK TO THEIR BODY SHOP SALESMAN AND HE CONFIRMED WHAT THEY HAD SAID. I LIVED WITH IT FOR A WHILE MORE, UNTIL THE SAME THING HAPPENED ON THE OTHER SIDE. KNOWING WHAT I HAD FOUND OUT, THERE WAS NO REASON TO GO TO THE DEALER AGAIN, SO I WROTE A LETTER TO THE CORPORATE OFFICE. I EXPLAINED THE SITUATION AND MY VIEW THAT BECAUSE IT IS SUCH A LOW FRONT END PROFILE CAR, THE WAY IT WAS DESIGNED MADE IT INEVITABLE THAT THIS OCCURRENCE WOULD HAPPEN AND I ASKED WHAT COULD THEY DO FOR THIS OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW. THEY RECOMMENDED THAT I GO BACK TO THE DEALER. I HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING AS OF YET, BUT I SEE ONLINE THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AND TO THE NHTSA. THEY MUST FIND A WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, BECAUSE IT CAN WORSEN AS THE BUMPER MAY COME OUT MORE. TOYOTA AND THE DEALER MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROBLEM, NOT THE CONSUMER.

I WAS PARKING ON MY CHURCH PARKING LOT, PULLING UP TO THE BUILDING AND BARELY MOVING. SUDDENLY THE CAR ACCELERATED AND SLAMMED INTO THE CHURCH BUILDING. I THEN PUT IT IN REVERSE TO SEE THE DAMAGE, AND IT SHOT BACKWARDS INTO A CAR AND THE CHURCH VAN.

THE BUMPER DETACHES FROM THE CAR. THE FRONT BUMPER COMES LOOSE AND HANGS WHILE I WAS DRIVING. NO VISIBLE TRAUMA AT THE TIME THIS HAPPENED.

CAR HAS BEEN IN SERVICE FOR 4+ YEARS SINCE NEW, AND REGISTERED ABOUT 90K MILES. DURING THE RECENT ROUTINE OIL CHANGE, THE GAS CHARGED HOOD LIFT SUPPORT FAILED WHILE THE HOOD IS UP, AND THE HOOD CAME CRASHING DOWN. WHEN THE HOOD WAS OPENED, IT STAYED UP, NO SIGNS OF PROBLEM. THE FAILURE HAPPENED WELL INTO OIL CHANGE, WHEN I WAS UNDER THE CAR, AND THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE ENGINE BAY. SO I WAS LUCKY, EXTREMELY. NO BODILY DAMAGE NOR PROPERTY DAMAGE. I THEN ASSESSED THE SITUATION, DUE TO THE WAY THE STRUTS ARE PLACED, WHEN THE STRUTS FAILED, THE HOOD WOULD HAVE A FREE FALL FROM GREATER THAN 45-DEG ANGLE, WHICH WOULD GENERATE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FORCE GIVEN THE WEIGHT OF THE HOOD. THIS CAN EASILY CAUSE BODILY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE IF THE PERSON WORKING THE CAR IS CAUGHT BETWEEN THE OPENED HOOD AND THE FRONT FRAME OF THE CAR. A FAIL-SAFE MEASURE SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE CAR TO AVOID INJURY.

BOUGHT THIS USED TOYOTA CAMRY SE 2013 YESTERDAY WITH ONLY 30,000 MILES ON IT. RIGHT AWAY, I HEARD CREAKING NOISE COMING FROM THE CENTER OF THE DASHBOARD AND BY THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. IT'S NOT VERY LOUD BUT CAN BE HEARD AND VERY ANNOYING. IT'S AUDIBLE WHEN CAR IS IN MOTION ESPECIALLY WHEN STEPPING ON THE GAS, BRAKES AND WHEN TURNING. NOT NORMAL FOR A 3 YEAR OLD TO HAVE THIS INTERMITTENT AND ANNOYING CREAKING SOUND. I IMMEDIATELY RESEARCHED ON IT AND TO MY SHOCK, THERE'S A LOT OF BLOGS AND POSTED VIDEOS ON THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE OF CREAKING SOUND BY THE DASHBOARD AND FRONT PASSENGER SEAT FOR MOST VEHICLES OF TOYOTA REGARDLESS OF MODEL AND DOMINANT ON THOSE MANUFACTURED SINCE 2013. TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE A FIX ON THIS SINCE THIS IS A THREE YEAR OLD ISSUE.

TRUNK LID WONT HOLD UP. IT EASILY COLLAPSES IF CAR IS PARKED ON THE SLIGHTEST OF INCLINE OR IS HIT WITH A SLIGHT BREEZE. THE TRUNK HAS COLLAPSES ON MY HEAD SEVERAL TIMES WHILE UNLOADING GROCERIES. MY CONCERN IS THE TRUNK LID CLOSING ON A TODDLER. MY OTHER TWO CAMRYS, YEAR 2001 AND 2003, DO NOT HAVE THAT PROBLEM. THOSE OLDER CAMRYS SEEM TO HAVE STRONGER TORSION BARS AND/OR HINGES AND/OR HOLDING MECHANISMS. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TELLS ME THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TRUNK LID AND ITS MECHANISM.

ANYTIME DURING WARM WEATHER WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER HAS BEEN/IS BEING USED THERE IS A DISGUSTING FOUL MILDEW ODOR IMMEDIATELY UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR IS NAUSEATING AND CAUSES HEADACHES. EVERY TIME THE CAR IS DRIVEN, I HAVE TO TURN ON THE HEAT AND PUT ALL THE WINDOWS DOWN FOR ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES TO GET RID OF THE ODOR. APPARENTLY THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH CONDENSATION FROM THE AC NOT DRAINING PROPERLY. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND SEVERAL SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ONLINE. SOME DEALERSHIPS CLAIM THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS ISSUE, WHILE OTHERS ADMIT THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF IT BUT THAT TOYOTA HAS NO "FIX" FOR IT. BREATHING IN MOLD IS A SAFETY CONCERN. THIS DOES NOT OCCUR IN THE WINTER WHEN AC IS NOT USED. *TR

I HEARD THIS PERSISTENT MODERATELY LOUD KNOCKING NOISE, WHICH SOUNDED LIKED IT WAS ACTUALLY COMING FROM THE FRONT LEFT(?) WHEEL AREA. AS SOON AS YOU START DRIVING, THE KNOCKING SOUND OCCURS, STOPS, AND STOPS AGAIN. IT IS MOST PERSISTENT WHILE DRIVING OVER UNEVEN STREET PAVEMENT. *TR

MICE CRAWLING UP YOUR LEGS WHILE GOING FREEWAY SPEEDS ALMOST CAUSED ME TO CRASH WITH MY FAMILY TRYING TO GET AWAY FROM THEM. TOYOTA NEEDS TO DEAL WITH THE MOUSE PROBLEMS IN THEIR CAMRY'S AND FIGURE OUT A WAY OF KEEPING THEM OUT. I KNOW LIVES WILL BE LOST BECAUSE OF THIS MANUFACTURING PROBLEM THAT COULD BE PREVENTED. THEY ARE NESTING AND DYING IN THE VENTILATION SYSTEM AND THAT IS VERY UNHEALTHY BREATHING MOUSE DROPPINGS AND ROTTING MICE. *TR

I EXPERIENCED NOISES ECHOING IN THE ROOF OF MY VEHICLE OVER SEVERAL WEEKS THAT OFTEN SOUNDED LIKE SOMETHING FELL ON THE CAR. THEN ON THE EVENING OF FEBRUARY 11, 2014, I NOTICED THAT THE HEADLINER WAS COMPLETELY SEPARATING FROM THE ROOF OF THE VEHICLE ON BOTH THE SIDES (DRIVER AND PASSENGER) OF THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE HEADLINER AND ADDRESSED WELD POINTS IN THE ROOF THAT THEY BELIEVE WILL ADDRESS THE SOUNDS THEY ALSO NOTED HEARING. *TR

ROUGHLY A FEW WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING MY 2013 CAMRY SE AND ABOUT 500 MILES, I NOTICED A POPPING/CLUNKING SOUND COMING FROM THE ROOF OVER THE DRIVER SIDE. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN <30 MPH AND ON UNEVEN/BUMPY GROUND. TO DATE IT HAS BEEN IN THE TOYOTA MAINTENANCE SHOP FOR 35 DAYS AND COUNTING WITHOUT ANY IMPROVEMENTS. NO ONE AT THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAS AN IDEA OF WHAT IS CAUSING THE SOUND OR HOW TO FIX IT. I AM CONCERNED THAT THERE MAY BE SOME UNDIAGNOSED STRUCTURAL ISSUE. THEY HAVE MENTIONED IN THE PREVIOUS REPAIR ATTEMPT THAT THE ROOF MAY BE TOO THIN ALLOWING THE METAL TO FLEX TOO MUCH. *TR

EACH TIME WE OPEN THE TRUNK TO THE CAMRY HYBRID, IT WANTS TO COME DOWN ON YOUR HEAD. IT'S A DANGER TO ANYONE WHO OPENS IT. WE NOW REGRET BUYING OUR FIRST TOYOTA. WE REALLY LIKE THE LOOK AND MPG OF THE CAMRY BUT, NOW WE JUST WANT TO GET RID OF IT. *TR
