Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2019-2020 RAV4 and 2020 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles equipped with electric power steering (EPS). Water may enter through the steering gear box cover and cause a loss of electric power steering assist.

A loss of power steering assist could increase steering effort at low vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering gear box, free of charge. The recall began August 17, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TB11 / 20TA11.

  4. Engine and engine coolingFeb 6, 2020

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020 Toyota Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES300h and 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles equipped with 2.5L 4-Cylinder engines. Porosity in the engine castings may result in cracks than can allow coolant to leak internally and/or externally.

A coolant leak can cause the engine to overheat and cause a vehicle stall in conventional gasoline vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, for all involved vehicles, the engine may get damaged mechanically, possibly resulting in an engine oil leak, increasing the risk of a fire.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the engine including the engine block, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 3, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TA04. Lexus' number for this recall is 20LA02.

  5. Back over prevention, sensing system, cameraAug 6, 2019

Due to a damaged electrical connector, the back-up camera may not activate when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply to Federal Motor Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."

If the backup camera system does not activate and the driver does not check his/her surroundings while reversing, there is an increased risk of a crash.

  1. Electrical system, Air bags, Service brakes, May 26, 2026

Was in a front driver side T-bone @ 35 miles and hour accident and no Airbags deployed

  2. Electrical system, Service brakes, Apr 27, 2026, crash

Braking while pulling into a parking space. Instead of slowing down the car accelerated and went over the curb. Maintained pressure on the break but it did not slow the car. Instead the car kept accelerating down an embankment, across an empty street and towards a telephone pole. Turning the steering wheel to the left to avoid the telephone pole the car further descended into a ditch. The car had to be towed and is now deemed to be totaled. The brake- pads had been inspected during a routine maintenance check the day before this accident occurred and they were good. No other vehicle was involved. My personal injury was an abrasion and bruise where my seat belt did it's job. My muscles are sore. The side airbags did deploy after the car stopped. The floor mats were locked in place.

  3. Service brakes, Apr 21, 2025

Well, making my research it shows that the RAV4 2020 will have a recall with the brake booster that my car the 2019 is having the same issues and it’s a very expensive fix. My car only has 40,000 miles is still brand new and I don’t understand why am I having this issues with the brake booster RAV4 2020 has a recall for that same part so I would like them to honor the 2019 brake booster and fix it as well

The following information refers to recall notice 19V544000 "SERVICE BRAKES" and "ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL" (recall number same for both notices) by Toyota for the 2019 Rav 4 Hybrid: "In 2019, Toyota issued a recall for certain 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vehicles due to a faulty brake assist system, specifically related to a potential issue with the brake booster pump which could lead to brake failure; the 2019 Toyota Prius was also included in this recall." The recall covered the manufacturing period 4/26/2019 - 6/3/2019 and a recall notice was issued on 7/24/2019 for the affected vehicles and owners were notified on 9/20/2019. We purchased our vehicle on 9/21/2019 with manufacture date August 2019 and on 12/19/2024 we suffered a brake failure causing damage to the vehicle and our garage. The Rav Hybrid Limited comes with sensors that will auto brake if it believes the speed/distance is insufficient and the brakes have not been applied. The brakes were self-applied at the time and no sensor action occurred. I believe the above recall should be extended to include August 2019 manufacture and should also include any sensors that involve the braking system and/or stability control system. Currently we are dealing with insurance and Toyota, no appraisal costs as yet

[XXX] - Driving my 2019 Rav4 Hybrid Se nearing [XXX] [XXX] traveling 25-30mph suddenly felt like car was moving faster, stop sign came up fast, slammed on brakes with 0 effect! Yelled [XXX]? as I shot across the highway, down the shoulder, coming to rest against a couple small trees. No air bag deployed, wearing seat belts of course, still bumped head on ceiling causing small laceration, neck trauma, and Dr found I had also suffered a Vitreous Detachment (eye). Did not lose consciousness. Vehicle damage appeared to be front left corner but enough underneath to total vehicle. Very fortunate no other vehicles involved and that debris brought car to a stop instead of a big tree or wall. Two witnesses heard brakes... 7. Service brakes, Sep 16, 2024

    The brake caliper remain stuck

  8. Service brakes, Engine, Sep 9, 2024

Engine: I got the 100k engine maintenance done. I replace my coolant and got an oil change. The engine maintenance required warning is still on my dashboard and will not go away because the diagnostic reader states I need a new coolant bypass valve. This is not apart of the factory maintenance, alot on rav4 owners are dealing with this, and it is very pricey. I think it is best for this type of situation to be recalled. Brakes: I got my front brakes replaced and I had issues with my front calipers. My mechanic said both calipers had holes in them and caused my brake fluid to leak which has affected my braking alot. It takes a long time to brake and I’ve experienced this even after I’ve paid alot of money to get my driver said caliper replaced, still need to get my passenger side replaced. My mechanic only uses toyota brand supplies so I’m not sure why there isn’t any longevity in the quality of supplies. I’ve only had the vehicle for 2 years.

  9. Other or unspecified, Service brakes, Engine, May 12, 2024

I bought this car last year on October 4th from carmax (mileage was 62k at the time of purchase). I started to have problems the next month on November 6th with the brakes which was rusted and had to replace the pads. That was very dangerous and could have hurt myself driving around the heavy rain at the time. I was scared for my safety and others wellbeing so I took the car to the dealership. Their mechanic checked the car and told me that this wasn't fixed or checked since April 2023 before I bought the car in october 2023. I had problems with the infotainment system. the map navigation for my android and iPhone doesnt work anymore. the mechanic at the dealership fixed the rear break pads and discs but couldnt fix the infotainment system even after updating the system. He issued me a 250 dollar refund and was charged 680 dollars for the rest of the job. Another issue happened on March 2024 for the front barring needed to be replaced from a carmax mechanic shop. Paid 380 to fix. This month I got a message saying " engine maintenance required, go to dealership". I took the car to the mechanic and explained that the computer code error message means the coolant valve is defective. I'm thinking of going to the dealer tomorrow up until I found out the car never got the recall repaired from this website. Could this be the reason why I'm having this may problems? The car hasn't been inspected by police or insurance, only the toyota manufacturer on November 6th who told me about the car not getting fixed since April 2023. I have the invoice of all these repairs done. The latest mechanic that told me about the coolant valve being defective thought I needed to change my oil. He did change the oil and charged me 189 dollars. I'm planning on taking the mechanic to fix that problem since the toyota dealership was gonna charge me to fix the transmission fluid which isn't the problem. I will upload the receipt for the oil change job.

Noticed air in the brake piston boot upon brake inspection. This is a safety risk for our drivers when commuting on their travels as they transport medical patient to and from the facilities. No warning lights on the dash, initial cause of inspection was due to screeching and popping noise from the brakes.

Unknown component or system While driving on the Interstate during rush hour, traveling 60 miles an hour, another vehicle along side us entered our lane and we had to avoid a collision by aggressive braking and steering. Following this maneuver, our vehicle immediately shut down. An 18 wheel barely missed crashing into our rear. It took us approximately 1 minute to realize we needed to put the car in park, step on the brake, and push the ignition button to restart the vehicle.

WHEN BRAKING THE VEHICLE TAKES LONG TO STOP AND THIS IS A BRAND NEW 2019 RAV4 ? IT ONLY HAS 5K MILES ON IT. I NOTICED A CLINKING SOUND WHEN TURNING RIGHT AND LEFT OR GOING OVER BUMPS. I RESEARCHED THIS AND THERE ARE SEVERAL RECALLS AND COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME ISSUE REGARDING THE LOWER CONTROL ARM REPLACEMENT DUE TO IT DETACHING FROM THE WHEEL HUB AND IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE! THERE IS ALSO A RECALL FOR A SAFETY ISSUE ON THE MOTOR TO BE REPLACED DUE TO CRACKS ON THE ENGINE BLOCK DUE TO MANUFACTURE OVERSIGHT! MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN THE TIME FRAME OF THE RECALL MONTH OF MANUFACTURE??? THERE IS ALSO AN ISSUE ON THE REVERSE CAMERA SYSTEM GOING BLANK WHEN REVERSING? I RESEARCHED THIS AND THERE IS ALSO A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE? *TR

  22. Vehicle speed control, Electronic stability control (ESC), Service brakes, Jun 19, 2020

WAS AT DRIVE THROUGH CASH MACHINE, STOPPED, PUT INTO PARK, DID MY TRANSACTION, PUT CAR INTO DRIVE LEFT TO GET TO STREET VIA A SIDE STREET. NOTED AT STOPS THAT THE BRAKES WERE HARD AS WHEN ABS IS NOT QUITE RIGHT. ON A TOWN STREET, TWO PEDESTRIANS STEPPED OUT INTO MY LANE OF TRAVEL. I PUT ON MY BRAKES, HARD. THE ENGINE REV'D AND CONTINUED FASTER AND I KEPT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE WOMEN GOT OUT OF THE LANE. I REALLY DON'T RECALL SEQUENCE, I WAS TERRIFIED (HAVE HAD A CAR RUN AWAY WITH ME LONG AGO). BUT I DO KNOW IT WAS REV'ING HARD, I WAS SO TERRIFIED I DID NOT NOTE IF ANY DASH LIGHTS WERE ON, OR WHAT THE TACH (?) WAS DOING. RAV WAS IN DRIVE, I PUSHED LEVER TO N AND FINALLY TO PARK AND THE ENGINE WAS SHUT DOWN. I HAD PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE STREET, SO FIRED IT UP, AND IT WAS 'NORMAL' BRAKES NO LONGER HARD. I CAUTIOUSLY PULLED OUT INTO THE LANE AND MADE IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER. IT TRIED ONE MORE TIME TO DO A REV WHEN I PUT THE BRAKES ON, BUT NOT LIKE THAT FIRST TIME AS I IMMEDIATELY TURNED IT OFF AND PUT INTO NEUTRAL/PARK. TOYOTA SERVICE PERSON SHOWED CONCERN AND DROVE THE RAV AROUND FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND COULD NOT GET IT TO REPEAT THIS. HE THINKS MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE THE SHOP BYPASS THE AUTOMATIC STOP ENGINE THING, PERMANENTLY BUT THERE'S NOT LONGER A WAY TO DO IN NEWER RAVS. SO PUSHED THE A BUTTON TO TURN IT OFF AND FEAR DRIVING IT. SERVICE MAN WAS GOING TO CALL ME BACK IF HE COMES UP WITH ANYTHING. HE MAY NOT RECALL THE UNINTENTIONAL ENGINE REVS OF A FEW YEARS AGO IN TOYOTAS, WHICH CAUSED ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS. IT WAS NOT THE FLOOR MATS I ONLY HAVE THE RUBBER ONES, 'BOLTED DOWN". FIRST FEW WEEKS AFTER PURCHASE RAV MADE BEARING-LIKE GRINDING NOISES WHEN THE AUTO STOP WAS TURNED OFF SO TURNED IT BACK ON. WHEN A ON OR OFF, VEHICLE JERKS COMING TO A STOP AND WHEN MOVING FORWARD AFTER A STOP. CAR HAS <4000 MILES. BOUGHT NEW. *TR

FUELING: GAS PUMP SHUT OFF WHEN TANK IS ABOUT HAVE FULL. TO COMPLETE FUELING I HAVE TO PULL GAS HOSE OUT OF TANK AND PLACE NOZZEL WHERE I CAN SEE GAS BEING DEPOSED INTO TANK TO COMPLETE FILL. I HAVE HAD GAS SPRAY BACK ON ME. TAKES 3 TIMES AS LONG TO FILL.

  24. Service brakes, Fuel/propulsion system, Mar 8, 2020

2 ISSUES WITH THIS BRAND NEW 2019 XSE HYBRID RAV4. 1) FUEL TANK NEVER FILLS UP AS GAS PUMP CLICKS OFF AT 9.5 (3/4 FULL) AT GAS STATION. THIS IS NOW ALL OVER THE NEWS AND BLOGS, AND TOYOTA SEEMS TO HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE, BUT NO SOLUTION YET . 2) AFTER TOYOTA DEALERSHIP PERFORMED BRAKE RECALL SERVICE ON DEC. 8, 2020 (AT LESS THAN 2K MILES), THE FRONT BRAKES WHISTLES OR SQUEAKS LOUDLY WHENEVER I APPLY BRAKES AT LOW SPEED (AT OR LESS THAN 5 MPH). WHEN I ARRIVED AT DEALERSHIP TO SPEAK WITH SERVICE MANAGER (SCOTT), TECHNICIAN WAS ASSIGNED AND RODE WITH ME AND CONFIRMED THE LOW BRAKE SPEED SQUEAL/WHISTLE. AFTER 2-3 HOURS, A DIFFERENT TECHNICIAN WHO WAS ASSIGNED TO LOOK AT IT CLAIMS "NO NOISE OBSERVED AFTER TEST DRIVE, OPERATING AS DESIGNED." FUNNY HOW THEY ASSIGNED 2 DIFFERENT TECHNICIANS - ONE WHO OBSERVED THE NOISE UPON ARRIVAL, AND THE 2ND ONE WHO LOOKED AT IT AND CLAIMS NO NOISE. WHEN DRIVING OUT OF DEALERSHIP SERVICE AREA, THE LOW SPEED (<5MPH) BRAKE NOISE SQUEAL WAS AND IS CURRENTLY STILL THERE. DEALER CONTINUES TO CLAIM COLD WEATHER OR MOISTURE MAY BE THE CAUSE (REALLY - THAT SOUNDS AMAZINGLY FALSE!) AND REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE OR REPAIR THE BRAKE NOISE ISSUE. IT'S AS IF THE DEALERSHIP (STEVENS CREEK TOYOTA, SAN JOSE) IS WAITING FOR A RECALL VS. ACKNOWLEDGING THE ISSUE SO TOYOTA CORPORATE WILL REIMBURSE DEALERSHIP FOR THE REPAIR COST FOR THE BRAKE NOISE ISSUE. CAR CURRENTLY ONLY HAS 4K MILES.

RAV4 HAS ONLY 500O MILES ON ODOMETER. HAVE BEEN GETTING A SQUEALING SOUND FROM THE BRAKES WHEN BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. BRAKING ABILITY IS NOT DIMINISHED, JUST A PERSISTENT SPEAK. SEEMS TO BE MORE PRONOUNCED AT FIRST MORNING BRAKING. AFTER ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES IT WILL GO AWAY FOR THE DAY.
