Recalls and investigations

  1. Child seat, vehicle latch anchorMay 11, 2023

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles. The four rear-seat lower child seat LATCH anchorage bars may have excessive powder coating, which could prevent a child seat from being installed with the anchorage bars. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems."

The inability to install a child seat with the LATCH anchorage bars could result in an unsecured child seat, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Owners are advised to install child seats using the vehicle's rear seat belts until the remedy is complete. Dealers will inspect the latch anchorage bars, and remove and replace the finish, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 2, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N232403240.

  2. Air bags, sensor, occupant classification, front passengerDec 15, 2022

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2023 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles equipped with ventilated front passenger seats. The Occupant Classification System may not properly disable the front passenger air bag when there is a small child or child restraint detected in the seat.

In the event of a crash, a front passenger air bag that deploys with a child or infant in the front passenger seat can increase their risk of injury.

Dealers will replace the passenger presence system, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 24, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N222388911.

  3. SeatsSep 29, 2022

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Chevrolet Equinox and 2022 GMC Terrain vehicles. The driver's seat may have a stripped or loose bolt at the seat frame height-adjust pivot.

A seat with a missing or loose bolt may not properly restrain the occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Dealers will inspect the driver's seat and replace the seat cushion frame, if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 4, 2022. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GMC's number for this recall is N222377890.

  1. Fuel/propulsion system, Nov 6, 2025

High capacity fuel pump stopped working while going up a hill. Lost all driving power on freeway and was unable to accelerate any more. Luckily there was a pull off on the freeway or I would have been on a blind turn with cars going 70mph. Had to have pump replaced at a local shop as there was no recall for 2023. 2021 and 2022 have the recall for this specific component.

  2. Fuel system, Gasoline, Nov 5, 2025

The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 65 MPH, he observed a "reduced engine power " message appear and the check engine warning light illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle lost power. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road, where the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was not able to restart immediately, but it restarted 45 minutes later, the failure persisted. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred approximately five months later. The contact stated that during the last failure the vehicle was not able to be restarted. The vehicle was towed to the same independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump and the entire fuel pump system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the parts being on a national backorder. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.

  3. Power train, Nov 3, 2025

My car has a vibration, I went to the dealer after one week of buying it, they first told me it has a learning transmission and after it learns how I drive it will go away. I later found out there is not such thing, the vibration at first was at slow speeds 30 t0 40 mph. I made a complaint to gm and the dealer, the dealer felt the vibration but could find what was the cause and said gm has to receive several complaints and considered this normal, I have taken it back for service a advised them gain of the ,problem and was told they could not fine the problem to wait until it get worse . I took it back over 6 times with no answers. My last time they said there was slippage in the torque converter but gm would not do anything and told me to wait until it gets worse, it now vibrates from 2 mph to 60 mph and makes a low growling noise, the dealer has felt the vibration every time I had them drive it, I new from the start if was in transmission it now will be three years with no correction, I know vibration can cause other problems which could loosen something else, I do not feal safe and will not drive it out of town. All I get from the dealer is they now know it is in the trans, but keeps telling me to bring it back when it gets worse. I cannot accept that, they keep using this as a excuse not to fix the problem. What else can I do?, I know other gm suv have the same problem but gm will not admit to the problem until they get more complaints. what

  4. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Nov 2, 2025

My car has been shutting down or going into limp mode. It has happened 4 times now and has left me stranded. The second time it happened I was going highway speeds and car lost power causing me to almost get rearended trying to pull my car off road. The 3rd time it happened my car stahled while idling and I could not get it to start back up in the middle of traffic at intersection. I have had injector and pipe replaced, ecm updated and now its going back to dealer as it is currently broke down again.

  5. Fuel/propulsion system, Oct 28, 2025

In September 2025 engine light came on and the message Engine Power is Reduced. The message and light went off. In October 2025 the engine light came on again and another message came on. Something like service ES. I didn’t catch the rest of it. No trouble driving and engine light went out after driving awhile. I took it to the Chevy dealer and they told me I need a new fuel pump. Car has only 58,249 miles on it. I refused repair and told them there were several recalls, but not for my year. Apparently this is a major problem with the Chevy Equinox.

  8. Engine, Sep 4, 2025

The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving uphill, the vehicle lost motive power with the check engine warning illuminated. The contact immediately depressed the accelerator pedal, and the vehicle accelerated, and the light turned off. The vehicle was taken to the residence. The contact stated that two years later, while driving approximately 40 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred 9 days later. The contact believed that the failure was associated with an unknown recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,200.

  9. Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 18, 2025

High pressure fuel pump bad before 60,000 miles

  10. Fuel/propulsion system, Aug 15, 2025

The component that’s failed and malfunctioning is the High Pressure Fuel Pump. Myself and my children’s safety was put at risk multiple times when the vehicle shut off multiple times and sputtering going into reduced power mode and the vehicle shutting off multiple times after it is started for at least 5-10 seconds. Yea the issue was fixed through a local Chevrolet dealership after having the vehicle for only two months and now the issues has reproduced after three months of being repaired the vehicle is back at the dealership with the same issues and awaiting a diagnostic. Vehicle is now at the dealership to be inspected and GM has been contacted regarding the issue Yes after the vehicle sputtered and died displaying the check engine light afterwards with the smell of fuel immediately after this was the first time this happens two months after vehicle purchase and the second time was 90 days after vehicle was fixed

  11. Fuel/propulsion system, Jun 2, 2025

While I was driving the Engine reduce power came on. I was currently doing 75 miles and the truck dropped down to 55 miles per hour. I took it to the Chevrolet place and it needed a fuel pump , and I was advised that this has been a common issue for the Chevrolet Equinox vehicles , and my vehicle is practically brand new. This issue needs to looked into because the is dangerous and a-lot of dealerships are stating this is a common issue.

  12. Fuel/propulsion system, May 2, 2025

I want to explain my case to protect a future person with this problem and that they soon take action. This has happened to me on 2 occasions. [XXX], my vehicle suddenly stopped at a speed of 55 miles on [XXX] in Miami and the car dashboard showed a lack of gasoline power that the gas pump stopped working, braking the car abruptly and with a high risk that a vehicle could collide with me at high speed. I had to pay for a tow truck to the Chevrolet Auto National Doral dealership in Miami. The vehicle only had 28,000 miles and it took a month to repair the vehicle. Time passes and on [XXX] the same thing happens to me at a speed of 60 miles on [XXX] in the city of West Palm Beach, the vehicle failed and braked abruptly and stopped working with the same risk that a vehicle could hit me. I had to request a tow truck for the area dealership AutoNation Chevrolet Greenacres and they tell me that the warranty had expired because the vehicle has 54,000 miles explaining that the car has had the same problem on several occasions and that it was a factory problem and that it had been repaired recently in a year and they tell me that I have to pay $ 1,000 dollars for the repair and I want to file this complaint so that an inspection is done on that entire vehicle because they all have the same problem and they should not charge the customer for a problem due to factory defects in this vehicle. 13. Fuel system, Gasoline, Apr 4, 2025

The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was restarted; however, while the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the failure had occurred while driving on a four-lane busy highway. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with fuel pump failure. The contact was informed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.

  14. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Mar 25, 2025

The fuel pump on my 2023 Chevrolet Equinox began malfunctioning on [XXX] when the check engine light came on. Less than 24 hours later, the light went out. On [XXX], while leaving a CVS pharmacy, the vehicle jerked, then the engine shut off. After putting the car in park, I was able to restart the car and continue on. On [XXX], the check engine light illuminated again. While sitting at a stop light in the turn lane, as I began to push the accelerator, the vehicle once again jerked and the engine shut-off, almost causing the vehicle behind me to collide. I was able to restart the car and continue on my way. On 3/21/25, I took the car to the local Chevrolet dealership (Integrity Chevrolet in Chattanooga, TN). After inspecting the car, the dealer informed me the high-pressure fuel pump and fuel pump module was bad and had to be replaced. The service manager agreed this failure was not the result of operator error and should NOT have failed after only 2.5 years of normal use. The conditions/symptoms are almost exactly the same as those described in GM recall notice N222372310 (dated 5/23/23). The repair cost $1,113.46 INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  15. Fuel/propulsion system, Mar 11, 2025

Fuel pump. It’s available for inspection. Left me stuck on the side of a busy highway with cars flying past. Check engine light. A message said engine power reduced had to take side streets home with hazard lights. Car would not accelerate or go over 40 mph on a 45 mph road. I had the check engine light checked at auto zone. No the vehicle has not been inspected. No warning lights before. I pushed the gas pedal down and the car had no power, started to sputter message popped up on the dash that said engine power reduced and check engine light was on. Problem started right before 4pm on 3/10/2025.

  16. Fuel/propulsion system, Feb 15, 2025

High pressure fuel pump failed while driving causing a sudden loss in power. Vehicle went into limp mode and would not exceed 5 mph. Check engine light and dash warning illuminated. Vehicle had to be towed. Dealer could then not get vehicle to even start. The sudden loss of power in a traffic situation would be dangerous with the potential for another vehicle to collide from the rear due to the sudden deceleration with no brake lights.

  17. Other or unspecified, Jan 27, 2025

Unable to respond to text messages verbally whenever you get a text. Initially the driver could accept and reply thru the radio if so desired but now this function does not work as before. Both the dealer and Chevrolet have not resolved the issue. Three case numbers have been assigned (9-14405693026, 9-14415635001, & 9-1445732776) without resolving the issue. The vehicle is well within warranty mileage. There is no safe way to safely respond to a text.

  18. Fuel system, Gasoline, Engine, Jan 9, 2025

The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving on several occasions at various speeds, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was restarted after two or three attempts each time. The check engine warning light was illuminated and the OnStar app notified her of fuel issues. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the high-pressure fuel pump and the feed pipe needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 37,000.

  19. Steering, Electrical system, Fuel/propulsion system, Dec 24, 2024

Electronics continually work in a “muted” manor. Not enough heat from the seat, steering wheel etc. Park assist and cruise control disengage on their own. Infotainment screen fails to recognize key fob and reboots radio. Entire camera system frequently goes out with an error that no cameras are even hooked up. HVAC system runs way too cold. Blower cuts out. Random vents will work, others don’t or struggle. Zero airflow out of the rear vents. Excessive water drips out of vehicle from several spots while either minimal or no exhaust coming from tailpipe. Sometimes exhaust comes from under the hood. Transmission shifts when it shouldn’t and doesn’t when it should. Grinding sensation from gas pedal upon accelerating. Very sluggish. No power. Rpms reach 3000-4000 trying to accelerate down steep inclines. Gravity is no match for this vehicle. Long shifts cause vehicle to remain in a state of constant braking. Getting only 18 mpg. Can’t maintain speed. Every shift is felt in pedals and steering wheel. Pulls to different sides after each shift. Power steering much too tight and difficult to turn. Numerous times fuel has failed to reach the engine. Not having control of acceleration, steering and no winter warmth is dangerous. At best. It’s downright deadly. DePaula Chevrolet will do absolutely nothing. GM corporate was also no help. This vehicle is destroying me financially and cost me my job. These problems have been happening daily since two miles after I left the lot on the date of purchase.

  20. Service brakes, Dec 19, 2024

Entering a freeway off-ramp at about 65 mph, I depressed the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor with little resistance. Two error messages were displayed on the dashboard: "Brake System Failure - 62 MPH Top Speed" and "Service ESC". The following dashboard lights came on: Check Engine, Brake, ESC, ABS. I held the brake pedal to the floor and coasted to a complete stop at the intersection, then proceeded slowly into a nearby parking lot and stopped. Braking effort did not become difficult, rather it was reduced to a small fraction of normal braking power. An online search indicated that disconnecting/reconnecting the negative battery terminal might resolve the problem, and it did, allowing me to carefully drive home with full braking. The local Chevrolet dealer replaced the brake system control module based on GM document 5081450.

  21. Electrical system, Service brakes, Fuel/propulsion system, Dec 9, 2024

Multiple problems since vehicle was bought brand new 2023 with 9 miles on it. 1st time - high pressure fuel pump died doing 70mph on high way. Took them 3 months to repair it. 2nd time- breaks completely stopped working while driving, all lights came on. They cleared the code and said to drive it. 3rd time- 2 days later breaks keep pushing through. They will not address it. 4th time- broke down with check engine light on high way. Turned off then on again light goes away, never saved a code. 5th time- will not shift out of 4th gear on high way. Dealer said they could not replicate this. It has not stopped doing this along with throttle response being dangerously poor.

  22. Forward collision avoidance, Nov 7, 2024

Forward collision warning goes on even when no vehicles are infront of me.

  23. Power train, Other or unspecified, Nov 7, 2024

Air recirculation button has never worked since I bought my vehicle brand new in 3/2023. It continuously brings outside air in.

  24. Electrical system, Other or unspecified, Nov 7, 2024

My trunk unlocked every time I put my vehicle in park. This has happened a few months ago as well.

  25. Electrical system, Oct 29, 2024

Water leak flooding the rear passenger compartment floor and the rear spare tire well. The water appears to be entering at the rear pillars. On the left rear leak, it is entering the fuse panel. The right rear leaks by the power outlet. I fear this is going to cause corrosion and create problems in the future. I removed almost 2 gallons of water from the rear floor with a carpet extractor. I was able to pull a drain plug in the rear spare tire well to remove that water. The moisture in the vehicle condensates on the inside windshield, moon/sunroof and the rear back glass making it difficult to leave in an emergency without first wiping all the window down with a towel. FYI: I am the brother of the vehicle owner. She has stage 4 lung cancer and I am handling things for her.
