Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorJul 1, 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Dealers will replace the left and right side RRAB modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 18, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available. Phase I owner notification letters were mailed on May 5, 2022. Phase II owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on May 31, 2022. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. This recall supersedes NHTSA recall number 20V-736. GM's number for this recall is N202324251.

  2. Seat belts, frontApr 8, 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.

  3. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorNov 25, 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator.

If the end cap separates from the inflator, the compressed gas will escape and the end cap can be propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the RRAB modules on the left and/or right side, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on December 22, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. Note: GM filed a new recall, number 21V-504 that supersedes this recall. All vehicles previously recalled under 20V-736 will now be repaired under the new recall number 21V-504. GM's numbers for this recall are N202309680, N202309681, and N202309682.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, wheel speed sensor/tone ringOct 24, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  5. Service brakes, hydraulic, power assist, vacuumSep 6, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.

As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

  6. Steering, electric power assist systemSep 7, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade vehicles. Electric power steering (EPS) assist may be lost momentarily, followed by a sudden return of EPS assist.

If EPS assist is lost and then suddenly returns, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the EPS module software, free of charge. The recall began October 12, 2018. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18289.

  7. Service brakes, hydraulic, pedals and linkagesAug 30, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, 1500 Crew Cab Special Service, Tahoe Police Pursuit/Special Service, GMC Sierra 2500, and 3500 vehicles. The brake pedal pivot nut may loosen, causing the brake pedal to be loose or inoperative.

If the brake pedal becomes loose or inoperative, the driver may be unable to stop the vehicle by using the brake pedal. Additionally, a loose pedal may also interfere with the accelerator pedal. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will add adhesive to the nut and reinstall the nut with increased tightness, free of charge. The recall began October 3, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18278. Note: The vehicles in this recall need this additional remedy despite being covered by recall 16V069 for brake pedal loosening.

  8. Seat belts, frontMay 3, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Tahoe Police Pursuit and Special-Service vehicles. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

If the pretensioner cable becomes fatigued or breaks, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the pretensioner cable and seat side-shield, free of charge. The recall began June 19, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 18156.

  9. Air bags, frontalJul 10, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. 1. Steering, Jul 22, 2019

WHEN MY TRUCK WAS UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY IT HAD A RATCHETING CLUNKING NOISE COMING FROM THE RACK AND PINION. THE TRUCK HAD 89000 ON IT AND I CALLED CHEVROLET FILED A COMPLAINT. I WAS DRIVING LAST SUMMER AND I LOST MY STEERING GOING DOWN THE ROAD THEN I GOT IT BACK. THEN I TOOK IT IN FOR THE SOFTWARE UPDATE RECALL. THE CHEVROLET GARAGE TOLD ME THAT THE RACK AND PINION IS NOT COVERED UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. NOW THE TRUCK HAS 109000 AND THE RACK IS BINDING WORSE. I DID MY RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THEIR IS ALOT OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM I'M HAVING. THESE RACKS NEED TO BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT.

  2. Service brakes, Jul 22, 2019

WE WERE DRIVING IN SEVIERVILLE, TN IN VERY BUSY TOURIST TRAFFIC GOING ABOUT 25 MPH WITH 2 BABIES IN THE BACK AND PULLING A TRAILER WITH A POLARIS RANGER. WHEN I WENT TO HIT THE BRAKES, THERE WAS NO MOVEMENT OF THE BRAKE PEDAL. I COULDN'T PRESS IT IN UNLESS I USED 2 FEET AND APPLIED HARD PRESSURE. ONCE THE BRAKES WERE PUSHED ALL THE WAY IN, IT USED ENOUGH BRAKE TO COME TO A STOP. THE MECHANIC SAID WE NEED A NEW VACUUM PUMP AND BRAKE PADS. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE IF WE WOULD HAVE MADE IT TO THE INTERSTATE.

  3. Steering, Jul 18, 2019

VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION MOVING STRAIGHT FORWARD AT A VERY SLOW SPEED (INCHING OUT OF CAR WASH DURING DRYING CYCLE). DASH SERVICE INDICATOR CAME ON "SERVICE POWER STEERING DRIVE WITH CARE". LOST POWER STEERING ALMOST INSTANTANEOUSLY AS DASH SERVICE WARNING APPEARED. WAS ABLE TO PULL OUT OF GAS STATION WITH NO POWER STEERING AND PULLED TO SIDE OF ROAD, TURNED OFF TRUCK. CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD TO SEE IF ANY NOTICEABLE LOOSE CONNECTIONS (NONE). WIGGLED FUSES IN FUSE BOX UNDER HOOD. RESTARTED VEHICLE AND DASH "SERVICE" INDICATOR FLASHED ON BUT POWER STEERING WORKED FOR 2 CORNERS (200 YARDS) WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH AND FAILED WITH SAME SERVICE WARNING. LIMPED TRUCK WITH NO POWER STEERING TO DEALER ABOUT 3 MILES. NO NOTICEABLE AFFECT TO ACCELERATOR OR OTHER ELECTRONICS IN THE VEHICLE. VEHICLE HAS 39,400 MILES ON IT.

  4. Electrical system, Jul 18, 2019

  5. Other or unspecified, Jul 17, 2019

THE AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSER SUFFERED A CRACK AND LEAKED REFRIGERANT REQUIRING THE ENTIRE CONDENSER TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS A WIDESPREAD ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL. GM HAS OFFERED EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE ON THIS DEFECTIVE PART FOR OTHER MAKES AND MODELS WHICH USE THE EXACT SAME UNIT, HOWEVER, THEY HAVE REFUSED TO OFFER THE SAME COVERAGE TO SILVERADO OWNERS. A LACK OF A/C IN THE GULF COAST REGION RESULTS IN EXTREMELY HIGH INDOOR TEMPERATURES WHICH POSE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISKS. ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS REQUIRE DRIVING WITH WINDOWS DOWN WHICH POSE SAFETY HAZARDS DUE TO REDUCED AWARENESS RESULTING FROM SUBSTANTIAL WIND NOISE WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.

  6. Steering, Electrical system, Service brakes, Jul 16, 2019

AT LOW SPEEDS OF 15MPH OR LESS, WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED, THE VEHICLES BRAKE ASSIST STOPS WORKING AND THE ELECTRIC TO THE CAR FLASHES OFF. IF SPEEDS ARE LOW ENOUGH AND YOU APPLY BRAKES WHILE TURNING RIGHT AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN, THE VEHICLE WILL SHUTOFF AND STEERING WHEEL LOCKS. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AND POOR DESIGN.

  7. Exterior lighting, Jul 14, 2019

CONTINUOUS HEADLIGHT BUROUT. NEW LIGHTS LAST APPROX 2 MONTHS. LED, HALOGEN OR INCANDESCENT.

  8. Service brakes, Jul 9, 2019

BRAKING IS VERY DIFFICULT WHEN AT LOW SPEEDS TO STOP, IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. I HAVE HAD MANY VERY CLOSE ACCIDENTS WHERE I HAVE ALMOST HIT OTHER VEHICLES DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP PROPERLY. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS ISSUE IS DUE TO THE BRAKE VACUUM ASSIST PUMP. THIS NEEDS A RECALL!

  9. Other or unspecified, Jul 1, 2019

A/C FAILURE DUE TO CRACKS IN CONDENSER WELDMENTS. AC STARTS BLOWING WARM AIR, COMPRESSOR CYCLES CONTINUOUSLY, NOTICE THE ABSENCE OF THE COOLING FAN NOISE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 40 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO SLOW DOWN, THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO REAR-END THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF IT. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE STEERING EITHER LOCKED UP OR LOST POWER AND THAT THERE WAS NO WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED BUT WAS NOT TOTALED OR TOWED. THERE WAS NO INJURY REPORTED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE BURNS CHEVROLET CADILLAC, INC. DEALER (803-366-9414, LOCATED AT 2515 N, CHERRY RD, ROCK HILL, SC 29732) WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V586000 (STEERING)). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT

  14. Service brakes, Jun 25, 2019

MY TRUCK IS SHOWING SIGNS OF THE DEFECTIVE VACUUM PUMP. PROBLEM WAS SPARATIC AND NOTICED IT SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASING THE TRUCK WITH 95,000 MILES ON IT. NOW AT 105,000 MILES IT STARTED HAPPENING MORE FREQUENTLY SO I RESEARCHED IT. RANDOMLY AT SLOW SPEEDS LIKE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT OR MY DRIVEWAY OR EASING UP AT A STOP LIGHT IN TRAFFIC THE BRAKES LOSE ALL POWER ASSIST. IT FEELS LIKE THE ABS IS KICKING IN AND THE TRUCK JUST KEEPS ROLLING. IT TAKES ABOUT ALL THE FORCE YOU CAN GIVE TO GET THE TRUCK TO STOP. WILL BE BRINGING THE TRUCK INTO CHEVY THIS WEEKEND. WAS HOPING FOR A RECALL BEFORE I HAD TO DISH OUT THE MONEY SINCE IT DOES SEEM TO BE AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE PREMATURE BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE WITH NO WARNING UNTIL THE TRUCK DOES NOT STOP.

  15. Service brakes, Jun 25, 2019

BRAKE ASSIST VACUUM PUMP FAILS. SPECIAL BULLETIN ISSUES WITH WARRANTY EXTENSION. WHAT GM IS FAILING TO TELL PEOPLE, BRAKING DOES NOT SIMPLY BECOME DIFFICULT AT LOW SPEEDS, BRAKES FAIL AT NORMAL SPEEDS. VEHICLE IN MOTION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, EVENTUALLY ABLE TO GET IT STOPPED AFTER EXTREME EXTENSION OF NORMAL BRAKING DISTANCE. AFTER SUGGESTED WARRANTY REPAIR I CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE INTERMITTENT ISSUES.

THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER (BILL MACINTYRE CHEVROLET BUICK, 10 E WALNUT ST, LOCK HAVEN, PA 17745, (866) 608-5724) WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL AND THE EXTENDED WARRANTIES HAD EXPIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT TO CALL NHTSA AND FILE A COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,000.

WHEN IN MOTION HARSH SHIFTING BETWEEN GEARS, SOMETIMES SO VIOLENT IT FEELS LIKE ANOTHER CAR HIT ME. WHEN ACCELERATING THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO SEARCH FOR GEARS, AND IS SLUGGISH FOR A HIGH HORSEPOWER VEHICLE. CONCERNING WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE IN TRAFFIC, TRANSMISSION HESITATES AND DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY APPLY POWER. HAD TRANSMISSION SERVICED 5 MONTHS AGO DUE TO SHUDDER AND SHAKE BETWEEN 20-35MPH. TRANSMISSION FLUID FLUSH HELPED FOR A FEW MONTHS, BUT SHUDDER IS RETURNING AS WELL.

  21. Seats, Other or unspecified, Jun 13, 2019

IT SEEMS THAT MY VEHICLE IS LEAKING SOMEWHERE AROUND EITHER THE SUNROOF OR THE XM ANTENNA. I ALREADY HAD THE LEAK AROUND THE THIRD BRAKE LIGHT WHICH NOT ONLY FILLED THE LENS UP WITH WATER AND KEPT BLOWING BULBS FOR MY THIRD BRAKE LIGHT FIXED. BUT FROM THE RESEARCH I'VE DONE IT SEEMS THAT A LOT OF DIFFERENT YEAR AND MODELS OF THE SILVERADO HAVE BEEN DOING SO. BUT SOME HOW WHEN IT RAINS OR I WASH MY TRUCK OR GO THRU A CAR WASH I GET WATER DRIPPING FROM MY HEADLINER ONTO MY HEATED SEATS, DOWN BEHIND MY DASH AND WATER PUDDLING UP INTO MY FLOORBOARD, ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. WHEN THE THIRD BRAKE LIGHT WAS LEAKING MY WHOLE REAR FLOORBOARD WOULD BE COMPLETELY SOAKED. THE CONDENSATION ON MY WINDOWS WOULD MAKE IT HARD TO DRIVE AND BE ABLE TO SEE THRU THE WINDSHIELD, THE WATER DRIPPING ON ME WHILE DRIVING WAS A DISTRACTION ALSO AND IF I TURNED ON MY HEATED SEATS I SOMETIMES WOULD FEEL ELECTRICAL SHOCKS IN MY BUTT, AND THE FACT THAT I HAVE MOLD GROWING ON TOP OF MY HEADLINER AND IN MY CARPET MAKES MY TRUCK SMELL AND I'M SURE BREATHING THE MOLD IN ISN'T HEALTH FOR ME OR MY 10 YEAR OLD SON. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE LOCAL CHEVY PLACE AND THEY WON'T FIX IT DUE TO IT HAVING OVER 36,000 MILES YET I HAVE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WHICH DOESN'T COVER THIS, MY INSURANCE COMPANY DOESN'T COVER IT EITHER.

  22. Service brakes, Jun 11, 2019

  23. Service brakes, Jun 11, 2019

I WAS ENTERING A STRUCTURE PARKING AT LOW SPEED WHEN I NEEDED TO STOP TO GIVE THE RIGHT OF WAY FOR CROSS TRAFFIC , AT THIS TIME I PROCEEDED TO PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE BRAKE WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO STOP. (THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAME STIFF AND IT WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO PRESS IT DOWN). LUCKILY I DID NOT STRIKE THE VEHICLE CROSSING AND AT THIS POINT I WAS USING MY EMERGENCY BRAKE. I FURTHER REALIZED MY TRUCK WAS NO LONGER STOPPING ON DEMAND, BUT MORE OF ROLLING TO A STOP. I CONTACTED A LOCAL DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T HELP ME BECAUSE THEY WERE BUSY WHICH I THINK IS UNACCEPATABLE I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT OVER A WEEK TO TAKE MY TRUCK IN FOR THIS SERVICE. BRAKE FAILURE SHOULD BE A PRIORITY FOR ANY AUTOMOTIVE DEALER.MY TRUCK HAS ABOUT 33500 MILES AND I HAVE MAINTAINED AND SERVICED IT PROPERLY.

  24. Power train, Engine, Jun 11, 2019

BAD LIFTER CAUSES ENGINE FAILURE AT 100,006 MILES. ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED. TRANSMISSION HAS EXTREMELY HARD SHIFTS FROM PARK TO REVERSE, AND SLIPS BETWEEN 5TH AND 6TH. DOESN'T THROW ANY CODES SO DEALER SAYS IT'S FINE.BUT IT'S OBVIOUSLY RUINING ITSELF. READING ALL THESE TRANSMISSIONS COMPLAINTS I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT RECALLED
