Recalls and investigations

  1. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on January 16, 2026.

  2. Power train, automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl)Jun 10, 2022

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2019 Escape, 2013-2018 C-Max, 2013-2016 Fusion, 2013-2021 Transit Connect, and 2015-2018 Edge vehicles. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.

A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.

Dealers will replace the under hood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 1, 2022. Remedy parts are expected to be available in 4th Quarter 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed October 27, 2022. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 22S43.

  3. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  4. Power train, automatic transmission, lever and linkage, floor shiftJul 16, 2018

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Ford Escape, and 2013-2016 Ford Fusion vehicles, equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions. The bushing that attaches the transmission shifter cable to the transmission may degrade over time and cause the bushing to detach from the transmission. The condition could allow the driver to move the shift lever to Park and remove the ignition key, while the transmission may not be in Park, with no warning message or audible chime.

If the vehicle is exited without the transmission being in Park and without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly move, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter cable bushing, free of charge. The recall began September 20, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. If the vehicle is started and driven with an insufficient level of coolant within the engine cooling system, the engine cylinder head may overheat, crack and leak oil.

If the cylinder head cracks and leaks oil, the oil may contact a hot engine or exhaust component, increasing the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install a coolant level sensor and the supporting hardware and software, free of charge. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk were mailed April 21, 2017. The recall began on January 5, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. THE TRANSMISSION QUIT AT 109,000 MILES. I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND WHEN I STARTED TO GO THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACK IN STEAD OF MOVING FORWARD. AFTER LETTING IT SIT FOR A MOMENT I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO MOVE BY REVVING THE ENGINE. I BARELY MADE IT TO THE SAFETY OF A PARKING LOT. THE INTERNET IS FILLED WITH COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AND I AM FACING A $3500.00 REPAIR BILL ON SOMETHING THAT FORD IS WELL AWARE OF AND REFUSES TO FIX. THEY RECALLED MY VEHICLE FOR DOOR LATCHES, BUT NOT A POWER TRAIN ISSUE THAT COULD GET SOMEONE KILLED.

  2. Power train, Sep 3, 2019

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 FORD ESCAPE. WHEN THE CONTACT SHIFTED INTO DRIVE, THE GEAR BECAME STUCK IN REVERSE. WHEN THE GEAR WAS PLACED BACK INTO PARK, IT SEIZED. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TURNED OFF AFTER UNPLUGGING THE BATTERY. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED TWO MONTHS AGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DIRECTLY RELATED TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V471000 (POWER TRAIN). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO NTB WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SHIFTER CABLE WAS DISCONNECTED DUE TO BUSHING FAILURE. THE REPAIR WOULD COST $500. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND REMAINED AT NTB UNTIL FORD DETERMINED THE NEXT STEPS. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE AND THAT NHTSA WOULD BE ABLE TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. A CASE WAS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER, BUT THEY DECLINED TO PROVIDE A CASE NUMBER. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,500.

THE CAR WAS STATIONARY. RECALL ISSUE WITH THE COOLANT RESERVOIR. BROKE TWICE AND COVERED BUT THIRD TIME NO WARNING. ENGINE NOW IS CRACKED DUE TO THE LACK OF COOLANT. I HAVE A COOLANT INTRUSION IN THE MOTOR AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. FORD WON'T COVER IT BECAUSE THE RECALL WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED PER THE DEALER AND THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER.

  5. Structure, Sep 1, 2019

THE DRIVER SIDE REAR DOOR LATCH BROKE, WHICH WOULD NOT ALLOW THE DOOR TO CLOSE, POSING A SAFETY HAZARD TO THE OCCUPANTS INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND AS I LOADED A BAG IN THE BACKSEAT AND CLOSED THE DOOR TO LEAVE ONE DAY, IT DID NOT CLOSE.

  6. Engine, Aug 28, 2019

ON 1/17/18 MILEAGE 47120 I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO OUR LOCAL FORD DEALER AND THEY REPAIRED THE VEHICLE UNDER WARRANTY DUE TO RECALL 17S09. HOWEVER, ON 8/5/2019 MILEAGE 62,500 THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING ROUGH AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. LONG STORY SHORT, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO ANOTHER FORD DEALER WHERE THEY DETERMINED THE VEHICLE HAD A CRACKED CYLINDER, THE EXACT SAME CONDITION THAT 17S09 WAS SUPPOSED TO FIX. WHILE I DID NOT SUFFER A SAFETY INCIDENT IN THIS CASE, MY CONCERN IS THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED CORRECTLY UNDER THE ORIGINAL RECALL, AND THUS THERE MAY STILL BE A SAFETY ISSUE THAT MAY AFFECT OTHERS.

I PURCHASED 2014 FORD ESCAPE SE WITH BRANDED TITLE FROM CAR AUCTION. AFTER RECEIVING CAR FROM TOW TRUCK, I STARTED CAR ON MY DRIVE, FEW MINUTES LATER VISIBLE SMOKE START COMING FROM THE ENGINE, AND I ALSO NOTICED OVERHEAT FROM ENGINE. I STOP THE ENGINE. NEXT DAY I STARTED CAR, AND EXPERIENCED SAME PROBLEM. I CONTACTED TWO RIVERS FORD - MT JULIET, TN. FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT ASKED ME TO BRING CAR IN THEIR SERVICE. THEY CHECKED CAR, AND COMMUNICATED FORD MOTOR AND FORD LEGAL SERVICE WHETHER TO FULL FILL RECALL PROCEDURES FOR BRANDED TITLE CAR. AFTER 20 DAYS, THEY CALLED ME. THEIR DECISION IS NOT TO FULFILL RECALL. THEY SAID FORD WARRANTIES NOT COVER BRANDED TITLE CARS. CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. AND MY CAR PROBLEM SEEMS PRIMARY RELATED TO RECALL ISSUE. ENGINE OBVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED OVERHEAT BEFORE SINCE PLASTICS OVER THE ENGINE WAS MELTED.

VEHICLE NEEDS "NEW ENGINE" AS DIAGNOSED BY TAPPER FORD DEALERSHIP, PAW PAW MI. WAS TOLD THE "BLOCK" WAS BAD AFTER "COOLANT LEAKED INTO ENGINE" FROM HEAD GASKET CRACKED. THIS VEHICLE HAS A RECALL STATING "LOCALIZED OVERHEATING OF THE ENGINE CYLINDER HEAD MAY CAUSE THE CYLINDER HEAD TO CRACK". THIS VEHICLE WAS AT STAND STILL IN TRAFFIC JAM ON HIGHWAY7/25/19 WARNING SOUNDS AND MESSAGE APPEARED ON DASHBOARD OF VEHICLE STATING TO PULL OVER DUE TO ENGINE OVERHEATING. VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN 1 MORE MILE TO HIGHWAY EXIT, PULLED INTO GAS STATION AT EXIT, HOOD OPENED TO SHOW NO COOLANT PRESENT IN TANK. VEHICLE ALLOWED TO COOL FOR 30MIN, PLACED APPROPRIATE AMOUNT OF ORANGE COOLANT IN TANK AS INSTRUCTED TO BY MANUAL AND DROVE CARE ANOTHER HOUR WITHOUT ISSUE. NEXT MORNING COOLANT TANK CHECKED AND NOTED NO COOLANT PRESENT, AGAIN PLACED APPROPRIATE AMOUNT IN TANK AS MANUAL STATES, DROVE VEHICLE ANOTHER HOUR. COOLANT LEVEL CHECKED FOR NEXT FEW DAYS AND HAD NO ISSUE. COOLANT LEVEL CHECK PRIOR TO DRIVING VEHICLE HOME FROM NORTHERN MICHIGAN, AGAIN NONE PRESENT IN TANK, AGAIN ADDED APPROPRIATE AMOUNT OF COOLANT, DROVE HOME APPROX. 350MILES WITHOUT ISSUE. NEXT MORNING (SUNDAY, AUGUST 4TH, 2019) STARTED SUV, ENTIRE VEHICLE WAS SHAKING, LARGE AMOUNT OF WHITE THICK EXHAUST PRESENT, SWEET SMELLING. VEHICLE BROUGHT TO LOCAL MECHANIC, STATED HEAD GASKET NEEDED REPLACED AND STATED A RECALL WAS OUT FOR AN ISSUE WITH A SENSOR THAT COULD MALFUNCTION AND CAUSE THIS DAMAGE. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO TAPPER FORD DEALERSHIP IN PAW, PAW MI FOR FURTHER EVALUATION. THIS DEALERSHIP TOLD US THAT AN ENTIRE NEW ENGINE WAS NEEDED AND WOULD NOT BE COVERED BY FORD. THE PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE OF THIS VEHICLE IS DUE TO THE RECALL STATED ABOVE. HOW CAN FORD REFUSE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AT A COST TO THEM? WAS GIVEN A PHONE QUOTE OF "$8,000.00" FOR THE NEW ENGINE. I DO HAVE A VIDEO OF THE WHITE THICK EXHAUST.

WHILE DRIVING THE CAR WAS MAKING A HIGH PITCHED WHINE. THEN AFTER TURNING CORNER, IT SHIFTED/SLIPED, THEN NO DRIVE AT ALL. MADE IT TO SIDE STREET, WHERE CAR DID NOT HAVE ANY REVERSE OR DRIVE. ALSO, NO WARNING LIGHTS, AND STILL NO LIGHTS TO INDICATE THAT SOMETHING IS CURRENTLY WRONG WITH CAR.

  11. Power train, Aug 23, 2019

CAR STALLING, CUTTING OUT, MISSING A GEAR AND SHIFTING VERY HARD, WHILE DRIVING. THIS WENT ON FOR A WHILE BEFORE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ONE. DEALERSHIP HAD TO REPLACE COOLANT BYPASS SOLENOID, SAID IT WAS RECALLED ON VEHICLES LIKE MINE BUT MY VIN DIDN'T SHOW A RECALL EVEN THOUGH THE ENGINE, YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, BUILD DATE, BUILD LOCATION WERE ALL IDENTICAL TO THE RECALL. VEHICLE STILL SHIFTED VERY HARD, LIKE IT WAS MISSING A GEAR, ADVISED BY DEALERSHIP TO HAVE TRANSMISSION REBUILT. SPENT JUST UNDER $4,000 TO HAVE BOTH REPAIRS DONE. HAD REPAIR COMPLETED IN AUGUST 2019 AFTER DEALING WITH THE ISSUES FOR NEARLY A YEAR AND BEING TOLD THAT WAS JUST THE WAY THE CAR DROVE BECAUSE OF THE TURBO CHARGED ENGINE. NO CODES EVER POPULATED SO WAS TOLD EVERYTHING WAS AS IT SHOULD BE. ONLY WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, WOULD THEY EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE AND EVEN THEN TRIED TO SAY IT WAS JUST THE SOLENOID AS NO CODES WERE COMING UP FOR THE TRANSMISSION ISSUE THAT HAD BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS! I'VE BEEN TOLD FORD KNOWS ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION ISSUE AND HAS THE CODE CLEARED OUT WITH THEIR SOFTWARE SO IT NEVER SHOWS WHEN TAKEN IN FOR SERVICE. NOT SURE IF THAT'S TRUE OR NOT BUT STILL FRUSTRATING TO HAVE SO MANY ISSUES WITH A CAR THAT'S NOT THAT OLD.

  12. Other or unspecified, Aug 22, 2019

THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SLOW DOWN AND BECAME HOT QUICKLY. A WARNING WAS SEEN ON THE DASH THAT VEHICLE WAS REDUCING POWER. WITHIN A SHORT TIME (LESS THAN A MILE) A WARNING STATED: "PULL TO SAFETY AND STOP DRIVING". THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED ACCORDING TO SCHEDULE. WHEN I GOOGLED SIMILAR SITUATIONS I CAME UPON A RECALL THAT LISTED EXACTLY WHAT TOOK PLACE. HTTPS://MEDIA.FORD.COM/CONTENT/FORDMEDIA/FNA/US/EN/NEWS/2017/03/29/FORD-ISSUES-THREE-SAFETY-RECALLS-AND-ONE-SAFETY-COMPLIANCE-RECAL.HTML MY VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED IN LOUISVILLE KY DURING THAT THE TIME PERIOD LISTED (JULY 2014) AND HAS THE SAME ENGINE NOTED IN THE ARTICLE. I BELIEVE THAT MY VEHICLE WOULD HAVE CAUGHT FIRE, IT WAS THAT HOT. AFTER IT WAS TOWED TO A FORD DEALER, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE COOLANT HOSE AND BOTTLE CRACKED BUT THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. (MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED) IT SEEMS THAT MY CAR IS AFFECTED BY THE RECALL BECAUSE OF THE SYMPTOMS OF WHAT HAPPENED. IT WAS IN PERFECT ORDER BEFORE THIS.

  15. Power train, Aug 21, 2019

THE TRANSMISSION HAS COMPLETELY GONE OUT AT ONLY 88,000 MILES WITH NO WARNING. IN OUR CASE IT WAS ON THE INTERSTATE IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. I WOULD CONSIDER IT AN UNFORTUNATE INSTANCE BUT WHEN GETTING QUOTES THE REPLACEMENT IS NEAR 6000 GRAND FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION WHICH IS A PROHIBITIVE AMOUNT FOR A FAIRLY NEW VEHICLE AND AN "AFFORDABLE" ONE AT THAT. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ONLINE THIS SEEMS TO BE A LARGE ISSUE WITH HUNDREDS OF POSTS FOUND THAT THEY HAVE THE EXACT SAME ISSUES AROUND THE EXACT SAME TIME. THEIR FORD ESCAPES TRANSMISSION GIVES OUT AROUND 75 TO 100K MILES. I BELIEVE THIS IS AN ISSUE BECAUSE THAT IS A VERY SHORT TIME FRAME FOR A TRANSMISSION TO COMPLETELY GIVE OUT THAT FORD IS REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE EVEN THOUGH 100S IF NOT 1000S OF PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. THE ISSUE OF FAILING TRANSMISSIONS IS NOT ISOLATED TO A FEW INSTANCES, AND IN A MAJORITY OF CASES FAILS JUST AFTER (WITHIN 10 -20K MILES ) THE TRANSMISSION WARRANTY EXPIRES AND SEEMS TO BE A PATTERN.

TRANSMISSION HAS A HARD SHIFT FROM TIME TO TIME MAKING IT FEEL LIKE THE ENGINE IS JUST GOING TO FALL OUT. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN DURING A SPECIFIC OCCURRENCE BUT IT SEEMS AS IF THE TRANSMISSION IS DELAYED GOING GEAR TO GEAR WETHER IT BE FROM PARK TO REVERSE TO DRIVE, OR FROM GEARS 1-5

VACUUM PUMP FAILED ON THE ENGINE CAUSING THE BRAKES BOOSTER TO FAIL INSTANTLY. LOST ALL BRAKE ASSIST AND HAD TO USE BOTH FEET WITH ALL THE PRESSURE I COULD MUSTER TO SAFELY STOP THE VEHICLE. VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY FOR ATTACHING PARTS, SEARCHED FOR PARTS. PARTS REQUIRED ARE VACUUM PUMP AND PUMP DRIVE COUPLING, COUPLER WAS SHEERED OFF CAUSING DAMAGE TO CAMSHAFT INTERNALLY. SEARCHED FOR PARTS CALL 5 DEALERS NATIONWIDE AND THEY ARE OUT OF STOCK, SEARCHED ALL OVER THE INTERNET. NO PARTS AVAILABLE IN THE WORLD. LOCAL FORD DEALER HAS 4 CARS IN SHOP WAITING ON PUMPS, PARTS WON'T ARRIVE FOR 30 DAYS. CALLED ANOTHER DEALER IN THE MIDWEST THAT SHOWED PARTS AVAILABILITY(6) ALL THOSE PUMPS ARE FOR ON-GOING REPAIRS IN SHOP AND NONE OF THEM ARE FOR SALE. THIS PUMP FAILURE IS DEADLY, DANGEROUS AND NOT BEING ADDRESS BY THE MANUFACTURER. PLUS EVEN TO REPAIR WITHIN 30 TO 45 DAYS I HAD TO USE A SALVAGE PART (I MAY HAVE BOUGHT THE ONLY ONE IN THE NATION) CALLED 12 SALVAGE YARDS AND THEY ARE OUT OF STOCK AS WELL. YOU CAN BE DRIVING ALONG AND THEN BAM. YOUR BRAKE ASSIST BOOST WILL BE GONE AND YOU DO NOT KNOW IT. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE SAFELY STOPPED. PART NUMBER IS BB5Z-2A451-C AND OTHER SIMILAR FORD VEHICLES AND EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE WITH THE 2.0L ENGINE. THANK YOU.

TRANSMISSION GOING OUT AFTER ONLY 77000, 5 YEAR OLD VEHICLE.. FOR SEVERAL YEARS THE VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCEL THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO, NEARLY CAUSING OTHER CARS TO REAR END ME. WAS TOLD THIS IS NORMAL HOW THEY RUN; OTHER VEHICLES FROM FORD HAS THIS EXACT ISSUE FROM THE EXACT SAME EQUIPMENT, ,BUT THE ESCAPE WAS NOT ADDED TO THE LAWSUIT FOR SOME REASON; THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDED AND THEY NEED TO BE REPLACING OUR TRANSMISSIONS THAT ARE FAILING PREMATURELY UNDER THE LEMON LAW. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE THAT THIS MANY FORD ESCAPES ARE ALL HAVING FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS IN SUCH A SHORT LIFESPAN. IT IS NOW SLEEPING AND JERKING WITH THE 2ND AND 3RD GEAR. DEALERSHIP IT WILL BE GOING OUT IN AT ANYTIME AND WILL COST 7500 TO REPLACE.
