Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.
An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. SHORTLY AFTER STARTING THE CAR (ON A COOL FALL DAY) A WARNING CAME ON THE DASH SAYING "STOP IMMEDIATELY, ENGINE OVERHEATING". THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO LIMIT MY ABILITY TO DRIVE THEREFORE I HAD O SLOWLY STOP AT CURBSIDE OF HIGHWAY. I CHECKED THE COOLANT WHICH WAS BASICALLY GONE. WHICH DIDN'T SEEM RIGHT ESPECIALLY SINCE I HAD JUST PURCHASED THE CAR TWO MONTHS PRIOR. ADDITIONALLY, THE ENGINE WASN'T SMOKING OR VISIBLY SHOWING SIGNS OF OVERHEATING. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO IDENTIFY ANY ISSUES. THERE WERE NO POOLS OF LIQUID UNDERNEATH THE CAR THAT WOULD INDICATE A LEAK. HOWEVER, THE ISSUE GOT WORSE AND I HAVE HAD TO FILL THE COOLANT TANK EVERY OTHER WEEK. TOOK THE ESCAPE INTO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID IT WOULD BE A HOSE LEAK AND THE COOLANT NEEDED TO BE FLUSHED FOR 800 DOLLARS. I DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY, SO TOOK IT TO ANOTHER SHOP. THAT SHOP RAN TESTS BUT COULDN'T FIND A LEAK IN THE HOSING SYSTEM NOR COULD THEY SEE SIGNS OF COOLANT ON OTHER PARTS OF THE ENGINE. MY CAR CONTINUED TO SUCK DOWN COOLANT FOR NO APPARENT REASON UNTIL FINALLY THE TIMING BELT BROKE.

THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MULTI-FUNCTION DISPLAY (MFD) WENT BLANK. EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN FORD RECALL 15C03. THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM. THE CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN THEIR LUCASVILLE OH PLANT DURING THE DATES MENTIONED IN THEIR RECALL, HOWEVER, MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. SINCE THIS IS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM LISTED I SUSPECT THEY MAY NOT HAVE BEEN CORRECT. FORD IS NOT RESPONSIVE EXCEPT TO SAY MY CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.

THE CAR ONLY HAS 56-58K MILES AND IS NOT THAT OLD. I WAS NOW CHARGED BY FORD ALMOST $2,000 TO REPLACE THE STEERING SYSTEM. I HAVE READ ABT THIS FROM OTHER OWNERS ON-LINE, BUT THERE SEEMS NOT TO BE A RECALL FOR SOMETHING THAT CAN POTENTIALLY CAUSE AN DEADLY ACCIDENT.

OUR 2014 FORD ESCAPE WAS RECENTLY UNDER REPAIR FOR THE JAN 2018 COOLANT RECALL. IT WAS COMPLETED ON MAR 15, 2019. ON MAR 16, 2019. OUR VEHICLE HAD DRIVEN ON THE FREEWAY FOR 3 HRS FOR A DISTANCE OF 200 MILES AND UPON EXITING THE FREEWAY AND STOPPING AT A STOPLIGHT. MY VEHICLE STOPPED MOVING AND MANAGED TO GET IT ONTO A GAS STATION PARKING LOT.. I HAD IT TOWED THE NEAREST CAR DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAD DIAGNOSED IT AND CAME BACK WITH THE TRANSMISSION AND COOLANT BEING THE ISSUE. THEY ARE CURRENTLY WANTING TO CHARGE US A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY TO FOX THE REPAIRS AND TRANSMISSION. I NOTICED THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE TRANSMISSION AS OF SEPT 2018. NO RECALL MESSAGE HAS BEEN SENT OUT YET. HOWEVER. I BELIEVE MY VEHICLE IS AFFECTED AS IT WOULD MAKE AN UNUSUAL SOUND FROM TIME TO TIME WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK, REVERSE, OR DRIVE AS IF IT GOT STUCK. I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE SOMEONE FROM THE FORD ASSIST ME WITH THIS BECAUSE IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE FOR ME TO DEAL WITH THIS IF THIS HAS BEEN A DISCOVERED ISSUE. PLEASE ASSIST ME IN THIS MATTER. THANK YOU.

ON WEDNESDAY MARCH 13, 2019, I WAS DRIVING WEST AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MILES PER HOUR, ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 10 IN SAN ANTONIO TEXAS BETWEEN FRESNO DR. AND WEST AVE. THE HOUR WAS APPROXIMATELY 10:00 PM. THE WEATHER WAS CLEAR, TEMPERATURE WAS IN THE MIDDLE 60'S. TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT. SUDDENLY, I HEARD A VERY LOUD NOISE, THE SUNROOF GLASS ON MY VEHICLE EXPLODED. I DID NOT SEE AN OBJECTS OR HEAR ANYTHING THAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THE GLASS TO BREAK. I HAD NOT DRIVEN UNDER AN OVERPASS OR BRIDGE. I EXITED THE FREEWAY AT WEST AVE. AND ENTERED A 7 ELEVEN PARKING LOT TO INSPECT THE DAMAGE. THE FRONT PANEL OF THE SUNROOF WAS BROKEN. I INSPECTED THE SUNROOF FOR EVIDENCE OF AN OBJECT THAT MAY HAVE HIT THE GLASS, BUT FOUND NONE. SOME OF THE GLASS DID FALL INTO THE SPACE BETWEEN THE ROOF AND THE INTERIOR PANEL, BUT THE MAJORITY OF THE GLASS WAS STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL PLACE. IT APPEARED BOWED AS IF THE BREAK OCCURRED FROM THE INSIDE OUT.

MANUFACTURER NAME : FORD MOTOR COMPANY NHTSA RECALL NO. / MFR RECALL NO. : 17V-209 / 17S09 RECALL SUBJECT : ENGINE CYLINDER HEAD MAY LEAK OIL WHEN SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT, A MESSAGE CAME UP ON MY MESSAGE BOARD "SERVICE ENGINE NOW". THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SHUDDER AND THEN SMOKE CAME OUT FROM UNDER MY HOOD. I TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF IMMEDIATELY, WHILE STILL SITTING AT THE LIGHT, AND GOT OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A FORD DEALERSHIP AND STATED THE HEAD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO A CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD WITH AN ESTIMATED OF $3500.00. I DID NOT RECEIVE NOTICE OF THE RECALL REFERENCED ABOVE. MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN "LOSING" COOLANT, WHICH I HAD BEEN REFILLING QUITE OFTEN WITH NO VISIBLE LEAKS OR PUDDLES. IF I HAD KNOWN OF THE RECALL THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. DUE TO AN ISSUE BY THE MANUFACTURER, I AM NOW SOMEHOW RESPONSIBLE TO FIX THEIR PROBLEM. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MANY OTHER VEHICLES AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY THE COMPANY. I AM THANKFUL I DID NOT HAVE MY YOUNG DAUGHTER WITH ME AT THE TIME.

THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE COOLANT SYSTEM, TO ADD A SENSOR DUE TO FORD HAVING CARS BLOWING MOTORS. AFTER THIS RECALL WAS DONE, I HAD THE CAR IN THE GARAGE ON AND OFF FOR OVER A MONTH, TO FIND OUT THAT TH COOLANT WAS LEAKING INTO THE NUMBER 4 CYLINDER. SO, THEY REPLACE THE MOTOR, NOT SURE ABOUT THE HEADS. THEN WITH IN WEEKS TROUBLE WITH THE TRANSMISSION.

TRANSMISSION FAIL: WE WERE DRIVING OUR 2014 FORD ESCAPE AT TIME OF THE FAIL. TURNING INTO TRAFFIC AND THE CAR WOULDNT GO ALMOST CAUSED A CAR TO HINT US CAUSE WE COULDNT GO WE COULDNT GET OUT OF THE WAY. FORD IS SAYING ITS THE TRANSMISSION LINE NOT BUILDING ENOUGH PRESSURE TO CHANGE GEARS. WE TOOK IT FORD ONE YR AGO BECAUSE IT WAS SHIFTING RIGHT FROM 2ND GEAR, THEY CHANGED THE FLUIDS SAID IT TESTED FINE AT THOS TIME. ONE YR TO THE DAY TRANSMISSION FAILS.

DOES NOT GET ADVERTISED FUEL EFFICIENCY. FUEL EFFICIENCY IS MUCH LOWER AT AROUND 22 MPG COMBINED. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

CAR OCCASIONALLY DIED AT STOP LIGHTS, SIGNS AND ONCE ON THE EXIT RAMP WHILE EXITING A HIGHWAY. OCCASIONAL TO OFTEN ROUGH RUNNING ESPECIALLY AT LOW SPEED AND ODD SHIFTS FROM THE TRANSMISSION. SURGING IN THE ENGINE WHILE AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND WHEN SLOWING TO STOP. ENGINE FAULT MESSAGE WOULD COME UP IN DISPLAY AND I TOOK A PICTURE, SHOWED IT TO SERVICE MANAGER WITH NO SUCCESS. COMPUTER WOULD NOT STORE CODES WHEN THESE PROBLEMS OCCURRED SO ON 4 SEPARATE TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE AND TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE IT AND BRING IT IN IF IT HAPPENED AGAIN. VEHICLE FINALLY DIED AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON. HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND A SIGNAL RETURN FOR MAP WIRING PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED. AFTER SOME READING I BELIEVE THERE HAVE BEEN SERVICE ADVISORIES AND POSSIBLY A RECALL FOR CERTAIN VIN'S. I TOLD THE DEALERSHIP I DID NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WITH THE PROBLEMS IT WAS HAVING BUT IT MADE NO DIFFERENCE.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT A NORMAL RATE OF SPEED (65), AS BY VEHICLE BEGAN TO STALL OUT. THE CAR STOPPED DRIVING RIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY, AND I WAS BARELY ABLE TO PULL IT TO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT GETTING HIT BY OTHER CARS. ONCE I PULLED TO THE SHOULDER, THE CAR BEGAN SMOKING. SMOKE QUICKLY FILLED THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. BEFORE I COULD ROLL ALL THE WINDOWS DOWN, THE ENGINE HAD BURST INTO FLAMES.

MY 2014 FORD ESCAPE, WITH A 1.6L GTDI ECOBOOST ENGINE, BUILT IN LOUISVILLE, KY IN MARCH 2014 LEAKS ENGINE COOLANT. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE ON JUNE 6, 2014. I HAVE PUT MY VIN INTO THE NHTSA NATIONAL RECALL SITE AND IT SAYS MY CAR IS NOT RECALLED. HOWEVER, FORD SAFETY RECALL 17S09 SUPPLEMENTAL #1, DATED DECEMBER 13, 2017, AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 17V209, AFFECTING 230,000 2014 ESCAPES CLEARLY STATES THAT MY VEHICLE, MANUFACTURED IN MARCH 2014, SHOULD BE IN THE RECALL SINCE IT WAS BUILT IN LOUISVILLE BETWEEN FEB 13, 2013 AND SEPT 2, 2014, THE RECALL TIMELINE. MY CAR, LEAKING ENGINE COOLANT, IS EXACTLY THAT DESCRIBED IN FORD SAFETY RECALL 17S09. IN THE PAST 10 WEEKS OR SO I HAVE NOTICED COOLANT ON MY GARAGE FLOOR AND HAVE FILLED THE COOLANT RESERVOIR AT LEAST 8 TIMES. AT ONE TIME THE HEATER DID NOT WORK AND THE RESERVOIR WAS NEARLY EMPTY. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF AN OVERHEATED ENGINE CAUSING THE CYLINDER TO CRACK AND SPEW OIL RESULTING IN A POSSIBLE ENGINE FIRE. I CURRENTLY HAVE APPROXIMATELY 39,000 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE. IF THIS VEHICLE VIN IS NOT RECALLED, I CERTAINLY WOULD LIKE A DETAILED ANSWER WHY IT IS NOT SINCE IT MEETS ALL THE PARAMETERS OF SAFETY RECALL 17S09 SUPPLEMENTAL #1 AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 17V209. THANK YOU.
