Recalls and investigations

  1. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, evaporative emissions, canisterJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Focus vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall number 18V735. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving.

An engine that stalls while driving increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 29, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S40. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6,2026.

  2. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

  3. Fuel system, gasoline, storageJul 5, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012 and 2017 Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI gasoline engines and 2013-2014 Focus ST vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines, previously recalled under 18V-735. The affected vehicles did not have the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) updated as intended. Therefore, the Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system.

The excessive vacuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began July 29, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S22.

  4. Fuel system, gasoline, storageOct 22, 2018

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles with a 2.0L GDI or 2.0L GTDI engine. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system.

The excessive vaccuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Ford Customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S32. Note: Until the vehicle is serviced for this concern, owners are advised to keep the fuel tank at least halfway full.

  5. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchSep 6, 2016

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 Ford Focus, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2015 Lincoln MKC and Ford Mustang, and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect vehicles. A component within the door latches may break, preventing the doors from latching and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the door latches with an improved part, free of charge. The recall began on January 27, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S30.

  6. Exterior lightingAug 1, 2013

Ford is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Focus BEV vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, manufactured September 15, 2011, through May 6, 2013; and model year 2013 Focus ST vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, manufactured February 16, 2012, through May 7, 2013. Due to a wiring incompatability, the front side marker lamps may not function. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Without the proper illumination of the side maker lamps, the vehicle may be less visible in night time conditions, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will modify the headlamp assembly wiring, free of charge. The recall began on August 16, 2013. Owners may contact the Ford customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's recall number is 13C04.

  7. EquipmentOct 2, 2012

This recall involves aftermarket parts sold by Yakima Products, Inc. for use on model year 2012 and 2013 Ford Focus vehicles. This recall is being conducted by Yakima, not by Ford. Certain combined Q-Tower and Q128 Clip rooftop rack systems, part numbers 8000124 and 8000728, do not fully contact the door frame.

Without proper contact of the rooftop rack clip to the door frame, there is insufficient clamping pressure and friction. The system may slide off the vehicle when loaded with accessories, possibly becoming a road hazard to other vehicles or causing injury to pedestrians.

Yakima will notify owners, and Yakima or a Yakima dealer will refund the purchase of the Q-Tower and Q-128 Clip system. There is no replacement system available for the 2012-2013 model year Ford Focus. The safety recall began on October 15, 2012. Only vehicles equipped with the vehicle rack system are affected. This recall is being conducted by Yakima, not Ford. Owners may contact Yakima at 1-888-925-4621.

FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 FOCUS VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM AUGUST 1, 2010, THROUGH OCTOBER 18, 2011. A SEAL IN THE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR TO THE PASSENGER SIDE WIPER MOTOR MAY BE MISSING.

WATER OR OTHER CONTAMINANTS MAY ACCUMULATE IN THE CONNECTOR, RESULTING IN AN INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE PASSENGER SIDE WIPER MOTOR, REDUCING VISIBILITY AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND AS NECESSARY, CLEAN AND PROPERLY SEAL THE PASSENGER SIDE WIPER MOTOR CONNECTOR. ANY INOPERATIVE WIPER MOTORS WILL BE REPLACED. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 21, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER AT 1-866-436-7332.

VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH REMOTE ENTRY AND PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM. ON OCTOBER 8, 2015, THE RIGHT REAR PASSENGER DOOR LATCH FAILED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY IN A PARKING LOT AND THE DOOR WILL NOT STAY CLOSED. AT PRESENT THE DOOR IS BEING HELD CLOSED WITH A BUNGEE CORD. PART IS CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE FROM FORD.

  2. Structure, Oct 6, 2015

RIGHT HAND REAR DOOR LATCH FAILURE. VEHICLE WAS MOVING FROM PARK WHEN DEFECT WAS WARNED BY THE DASHBOARD "DOOR OPEN" WARNING SYSTEM. (WARNING! THE FOLLOWING IS AN EDITORIAL, OR RANT, BY THE CAR OWNER. HE INTENDS TO SHAME THOSE AT FORD WHO DECIDE THAT THINGS LIKE DOOR LATCH ISSUES DO NOT SERVE THE BOTTOM LINE SO ARE UNIMPORTANT.) TO THOROUGHLY DESCRIBE THIS PROBLEM ONE NEED ONLY TO KNOW OF THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF FORDS ALREADY RECALLED FOR THE SAME ISSUE. CAJOLING BY SOME SEEMS TO INCREASE THE SCOPE OF THE RECALL, WHICH DOES NOT YET INCLUDE THIS VEHICLE. AMONG OTHER THINGS, THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN. PASSENGER SEATBELTS BEING MORE WIDELY USED DOES NOT ALLOW FOR DOOR LATCHES TO BE LESS EFFECTIVE! LET THE LUXURY OPTIONS FAIL BEFORE TEN YEARS, NOT THE BONES OF THE THING. WHO DECIDES TO CONTINUE USING BAD LATCH TECHNOLOGY FOR SO LONG? THIS IS NOT A CHALLENGE, IT IS A CHOICE.

DOOR LATCH ON DRIVER SIDE WILL NOT LATCH AND CLOSE, I HAVE HEARD OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. I KNOW THEY HAVE A RECALL FOR THE FORD FIESTA FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, I AM PRETTY SURE THIS IS THE SAME LATCH ASSEMBLY THAT'S ON THE FIESTA.

I HAVE A 2012 FORD FOCUS SEL SEDAN. I WAS REMOVING SOME ITEMS FROM THE BACK SEAT AND UPON CLOSING THE RIGHT-HAND REAR DOOR THE DOOR WOULD NOT LATCH. TRIED LOCKING THE DOOR REMOTELY BEFORE CLOSING. NO EFFECT. TRIED JOGGING THE DOOR LATCH MECHANISM TO SEE IF IT WAS STUCK SOMEHOW. NO EFFECT. I HAVE TO TIE A STRING TO THE DOOR HANDLE FROM THE INSIDE AROUND THE FRONT PASSENGER HEADREST IN ORDER TO KEEP THE DOOR CLOSED! TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, THE FRONT-PASSENGER DOOR LATCH MECHANISM FAILED LESS THAN A WEEK AGO! A REPLACEMENT PART IS ON ORDER FOR IT FROM MY LOCAL FORD DEALER. FORTUNATELY, THE FRONT DOOR WILL STAY CLOSED IF IT IS LOCKED BEFORE CLOSING IT, BUT THIS IS STILL A RIDICULOUS COMPONENT FAILURE.

  10. Structure, Sep 18, 2015

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 FORD FOCUS. WHILE PARKED, THE LATCH ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LOCK FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE LATCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. 2012 FORD FOCUS SEL FRONT PASSENGER-SIDE DOOR IS FAILING TO LATCH CLOSED. LATCH MECHANISM CAN ONLY BE ACTUATED THROUGH DIRECTLY HOLDING THE AFFECTED DOOR CLOSED AND LOCKING THE DOOR REMOTELY. DOOR STAYS CLOSED IF LOCKED.

DRIVER SIDE DOOR LATCH IS BROKEN. WHEN SHUTTING THE DOOR IT WILL NOT LATCH AND CAN COME OPEN WHEN DRIVING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND IT IS NOT PART OF THE DOOR LATCH RECALL.

DISCOVERED DRIVERS SIDE DOOR WILL NOT CLOSE, STAY SHUT, LATCH, OR LOCK PROPERLY. DOOR MAY BE PULLED OR PUSHED OPEN WHEN PARKED OR AT ANY SPEED AND LATCHING MECHANISM WILL NOT KEEP DOOR IN PLACE. THIS IS A HIGHLY CONCERNING SAFETY ISSUE AS THIS RESULTED IN RECALLS FOR THE EXPLORER, 2011-2014 FIESTA, 2013-2014 FUSION, AND 2013-2014 MKZ WITH THE SAME EXACT MECHANISM.

  15. Structure, Aug 31, 2015

DRIVER'S SIDE CAR DOOR SWUNG OPEN IN PARKING LOT. DOOR WILL NOT CLOSE OR LATCH AT ALL. COULD HAVE CAUSED INJUY OR DAMAGE.

  16. Structure, Other or unspecified, Aug 26, 2015

I WAS DRIVING TO AN EARLY MORNING MEETING (5:30AM) WHEN THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR SUDDENLY OPENED WITHOUT WARNING. ONCE THE DOOR OPENED, IT WOULD NO LONGER LATCH. THE CAR DOOR HAD TO BE MANUALLY HELD FIRMLY CLOSED FOR THE DURATION OF THE TRIP. WITH EVERY TURN, THE DOOR WOULD ATTEMPT TO FLY OPEN.

  17. Structure, Aug 25, 2015

MY 2012 FORD FOCUS HAS A FAULTY BACK DRIVER SIDE DOOR THAT WILL NOT CLOSE. HAD TO TAKE TO DEALER AND PAY $503.00 TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO FORD THE FIESTA HAS DISPLAYED THIS SAME PROBLEM; HOWEVER, MY PARTICULAR VIN NUMBER HAS NOT BEEN INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. "THE DOOR LATCH IN THESE VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE A BROKEN PAWL SPRING TAB, WHICH TYPICALLY RESULTS IN A CONDITION WHERE THE DOOR WILL NOT LATCH," THE COMPANY SAID IN A STATEMENT. "IF A CUSTOMER IS THEN ABLE TO LATCH THE DOOR, THERE IS POTENTIAL THE DOOR MAY UNLATCH WHILE DRIVING, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY." "FORD IS AWARE OF TWO ALLEGATIONS OF SORENESS RESULTING FROM AN UNLATCHED DOOR BOUNCING BACK WHEN THE CUSTOMER ATTEMPTED TO CLOSE IT, AND ONE ACCIDENT ALLEGATION WHEN AN UNLATCHED DOOR SWUNG OPEN AND STRUCK AN ADJACENT VEHICLE AS THE DRIVER WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE," THE COMPANY SAID. NO INFORMATION ABOUT THE RECALL HAS BEEN POSTED ON THE WEB SITE OF THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINSTRATION, WHICH OVERSEES VEHICLE SAFETY IN THE U.S. "IN RESPONSE TO A THOROUGH NHTSA INVESTIGATION THAT DEMONSTRATED A CLEAR RISK TO SAFETY, FORD IS TAKING IMPORTANT ACTION TO PROTECT ITS CUSTOMERS," SAID NHTSA ADMINISTRATOR MARK ROSEKIND IN A STATEMENT SENT TO EDMUNDS. "WE ARE PLEASED THAT FORD IS TAKING THIS PROACTIVE STEP FOR SAFETY." LAST MONTH, NHTSA UPGRADED A PROBE INTO THE 2011-'13 FORD FIESTA FOR DOOR-LATCH PROBLEMS. "FORD IDENTIFIED THE ISSUE AND WE HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATING IT THROUGH OUR NORMAL PROCESS," WROTE FORD SPOKESWOMAN KELLI FELKER IN RESPONSE TO A QUERY FROM EDMUNDS. "FORD IS WORKING COOPERATIVELY WITH THE AGENCY AND HAS DISCUSSED THIS RECALL WITH NHTSA." THE RECALL INCLUDES 336,873 VEHICLES IN THE U.S. AND FEDERALIZED TERRITORIES, 30,198 IN CANADA AND 22,514 IN MEXICO.

ON MAY 18, 2015, WHEN I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY WORK PARKING LOT AND TURNING ONTO THE MAIN STREET, THE PASSENGER FRONT DOOR FLEW OPEN FOR NO REASON. I PULLED OVER AND TRIED TO CLOSE THE DOOR, BUT IT WOULD NOT LATCH CLOSED AT ALL. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES AND ENDED UP "SEAT-BELTING" THE DOOR SHUT. I FEEL THIS IS AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, I HAD A PAY $100 DEDUCTIBLE FOR THIS TO BE FIXED, BUT AGAIN, I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND DESERVES DUE INVESTIGATION. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR THE CAR DOOR TO COME OPEN WHEN I WAS DRIVING. AS I AM WRITING THIS COMPLAINT ON JULY 31, 2015, MY BACK PASSENGER DOOR DID THE SAME THING, EXCEPT MY DAUGHTER WAS IN THE BACKSEAT!! (TRACKING ISSUE #: 10745475) I SINCERELY HOPE CONSUMER AFFAIRS LOOKS INTO WHY FORD FOCUS 2012 CAR DOORS ARE NOT LATCHING CLOSED! *TR

THIS CAR IS RELATIVELY NEW. ALL OF A SUDDEN AND WITH ANY NOTICE, BOTH DOORS ON THE DRIVER SIDE STOPPED WORKING PROPERLY. THEY CLOSE BUT DO NOT LOCK. I HAVE HAD TO DRIVE THE CAR WITH THE DOORS TIED AS THE FORD DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE ME A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY TO REPAIR THE SITUATION. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. I CONTACTED THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROBLEM AND THAT I HAD TO REPAIR THE CAR MYSELF. VERY IRRESPONSIBLE BECAUSE THEY HAVE RECALLED THE FIESTA AND THE FUSION FOR EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM.

WHILE DRIVING TO A STORE, TOOK A RIGHT HAND TURN AND DRIVER SIDE DOOR FLEW WIDE OPEN. I HELD THE DOOR SHUT WHILE DRIVING WITH ONE ARM. MY BROTHER WHO HAD A 2013 FORD FIESTA HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH BOTH REAR DOORS, AND HIS PASSENGER DOOR. THIS ISSUE I HAVE HEARD OF THOUSANDS OF TIMES AND YET NO RECALL? IT'S GOING TO TAKE SOMEONE FALLING OUT OF THEIR CAR AND THE CAR HITTING INNOCENT BYSTANDERS FOR THIS TO BECOME SERIOUS FOR FORD TO FIX. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS $500 FOR THIS FIX DESPITE ITS A KNOWN MANUFACTURER DEFECT, AND TERRIBLE DESIGN. 2010+ FORD CARS IN MY OPINION ARE ALL GARBAGE, AND FORD SERVICE DOES NOT CARE.

  25. Structure, Other or unspecified, Electronic stability control (ESC), Jun 12, 2015

I HAVE A FORD FOCUS 2012 IT HAS POWER LOCK ON THE DOORS. 3 DOORS LOCK WITH THE REMOTE JUST FINE THE DOOR BEHIND THE DRIVERS SEAT WONT EVEN CLOSE. IT OPENS WHEN I TURN CORNERS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUES ESPECIALLY WHEN I HAVE SMALL CHILDREN, THIS CAR HAS HAD TWO RECALL FIXES ONE WITH CAR ROLLING BACK EVEN THOUGH IT IS AN AUTOMATIC AND A TRANSMISSION FAILURE ALL DUE TO ELECTRICAL ISSUES. I FEEL THAT THE THIS IS ANOTHER ONE GIVEN THAT MY PASSENGER LEFT REAR DOOR CANT EVEN BE MANUALLY LOCKED ITS ONLY LOCKED AND UNLOCKED ELECTRICALLY, THERE IS NOTHING BLOCKING THE DOOR TO MAKE IT NOT CLOSE ONLY THE LOCK ITSELF.
