Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S43. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6,2026.

  3. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. 4. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles with a 2.0L GDI or 2.0L GTDI engine. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system.

The excessive vaccuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Ford Customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S32. Note: Until the vehicle is serviced for this concern, owners are advised to keep the fuel tank at least halfway full.

POWERSHIFT DUAL CLUTCH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.. I PURCHASED MY 2015 FOCUS A YEAR AGO WITH 17K MILES ON IT. AT 21K MILES I HAD TO REPLACE THE POWER SHIFT DUAL CLUTCH, AND I AM NOW AT 33K MILES AND I AM ON MY SECOND CLUTCH REPLACEMENT DUE TO SLIPPING, BUCKING, KICKING, AND JERKING FROM THE TRANSMISSION. FORD IS REFUSING TO LIST THIS AS A RECALL; . MY CAR IS ACTUALLY GETTING THE NEW CLUTCH INSTALLED THIS WEEK. I JUST RECEIVED IN THE MAIL A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT IS BEING PURSUED AGAINST FORD FOR THIS ON GOING ISSUE WITH THESE FOCUS'S. I JUST WANT TO MAKE OTHER MOTORIST AWARE IF THEY ARE FEELING THESE SAME THINGS FROM THEIR FOCUS OR FIESTA YEARS 2011-2016 PLEASE SEE ABOUT GETTING IT CHECKED OUT. IT'S NOT NORMAL FOR THESE CARS TO BE DOING THIS.

  2. Wheels, Jul 12, 2017

PASSENGER SIDE FRONT BALL JOINT SNAPPED, CAUSING LOWER CONTROL ARM BOLT TO SNAP-SEPARATED AND DAMAGED AXLE. CAR SKIDDED APPROXIMATELY 70 FT BEFORE STOPPING. VEHICLE WAS MOVING FORWARD ON A CITY STREET.

  3. Other or unspecified, Jul 12, 2017

TRANSMISSION LOSES POWER RANDOMLY. ALSO, SHIFTING IS JUMPY, WHEN GOING FROM STOP, AT TIMES. HAVE CONTACTED DEALER AND WAS TOLD THIS WAS COMMON OF THIS PARTICULAR TRANSMISSION. THIS HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN ONCE. I AM JUST USING TODAY'S DATE AS ONE OF MANY! STARTED ON THE FIRST DAY I HAD THE CAR.

  4. Power train, Electrical system, Jul 10, 2017

WHEN ACCELERATING OR DRIVING UP A HILL, THE VEHICLE STALLS. THE CLUTCH WAS REPLACED ONCE AND THE ISSUE WAS TEMPORARILY FIXED, BUT HAS STARTED AGAIN. ALSO HAS ISSUES WHERE THE RADIO WILL MAKE A POPPING NOISE AND STOPS WORKING.

  5. Power train, Jul 10, 2017

VEHICLE HESITATED/LOST POWER UPON ENTERING 55MPH HIGHWAY. TOOK TO DEALER, WAITING ON CLUTCH. SALES PERSON HAD TOLD ME THIS VEHICLE HAD REDESIGNED TRANSMISSION. AT FIRST IT PERFORMED MUCH SMOOTHER THAN MY 2012 FORD FIESTA. NOT NOW. SERVICE DEPT. CLAIMS NEW CLUTCH IS MUCH BETTER. THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST FORD NOW FOR "POWER SHIFT" TRANSMISSION.

  6. Latches/locks/linkages, Jun 29, 2017

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 FORD FOCUS. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V643000 (LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES); HOWEVER, THE PARTS TO DO THE REPAIR WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER (RICE FORD-LINCOLN LOCATED AT 436 W 250 N, WARSAW, IN 46582; (574) 267-8151) WAS CONTACTED TWO MONTHS AGO AND CONFIRMED THAT THE PARTS WOULD BE AVAILABLE IN A FEW WEEKS. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AGAIN THE FIRST WEEK IN MAY AND CONFIRMED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

  7. Other or unspecified, Jun 21, 2017

THE CLUTCH IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WAS SWITCHED OUT TWICE BECAUSE OF ITS DEFECTIVE PERFORMANCE. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE FORD DISTRIBUTOR, WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED AND CARED FOR, THE 3RD TIME AND IT WAS SUPPOSABLY ATTENDED TO AND CORRECTED BY REBOOTING THE COMPUTER SYSTEM. THE CAR SHUTTERS AND DRIVES POORLY. I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW TITANIUM, TOP DOLLAR, AND RECEIVED A LEMON THAT DRIVES TERRIBLY. ALSO, THE USB PLUGS DO NOT WORK. AND HAVE BEEN ATTENDED TO 3 TIMES, WITH NO AVAIL. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER, THE GENERAL MANAGER, AND MECHANIC THAT THE SPECIFIC MODEL IS DEFECTIVE. THAT THEY JUST CAN'T GET THE CLUTCH RIGHT. AND THAT IT IS A LEMON. IT IS MY RIGHT, AS A CONSUMER, WHO THOUGHT SHE WAS BUYING THE BEST OF AMERICA'S CARS, AND PAID FULL PRICE, TO BE REIMBURSED AND COMPENSATED.

  8. Engine, Jun 21, 2017

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 FORD FOCUS. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER (NALLEY FORD SANDY SPRINGS 7555 ROSWELL ROAD, ATLANTA, GA 30350), BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED, BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 51,000.

  9. Power train, Jun 20, 2017

TRANSMISSION SLIPS/SHUTTERS/JERKS. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HAS HAD PROBLEMS SINCE NEW. THEY HAVE REPAIRED IT SEVERAL TIMES AND THE PROBLEM JUST COMES BACK. IT CAUSES HESITATION WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP AND IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE WHEN IT HAPPENS. FORD WILL NOT REPAIR IT UNTIL THE SLIPPAGE IS OUTSIDE THEIR THRESHOLD, BUT BY THAT TIME IT IS A HAZARD. THESE CARS NEED TO BE REPLACED.

  10. Other or unspecified, Jun 13, 2017

RECALL NHTSA # 15V436 (FORD RECALL #15C06) IS ON THE C-MAX BODY CONTROL MODULE. THIS HAS CAUSED THE ENTIRE CAR TO NOT START. IT WAS BROUGHT IN FOR SERVICE 7/3/17 AND I HAVE NO UPDATES. THE RECALL WAS ISSUED 7/1/15 AND THE CAR, ITSELF, WAS PURCHASED THE NEXT 8/2015 SO IT WAS SOLD WITH A KNOWN RECALL AND NOW, 2 YEARS LATER, IT'S VERY CONCERNING THAT A FIX IS STILL NOT READILY AVAILABLE WHEN BROUGHT IT FOR SERVICE.

  11. Other or unspecified, Jun 6, 2017

A/C NOT HEATING PROPERLY, DEALER SAYS CAN'T FIND PROBLEM, I EXPECT AS MUCH FOR WARRANTY WORK. SOUNDS LIKE STRANGE NOISES UNDER DASH.

  12. Power train, May 31, 2017

ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS, I HAVE LOST POWER IN DIFFERENT CONDITIONS. I HAVE NOTIFIED THE DEALERS AND THEY HAVE TRIED TO REPAIR MY PROBLEM EACH TIME. THEY SAID THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS TYPE OF TRANSMISSION AND HAVE DECIDED TO INCREASE THE POWER-TRAIN WARRANTY. I THINK IT IS NOW UP TO 10 YEARS AND 150,000 MILES. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY JUST WANT TO KEEP FIXING THOSE TRANSMISSIONS AND CONTROL MODULES BUT THE SITUATION IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE LOSS OF POWER HAS HAPPENED TO ME IN SOME DIFFERENT CONDITIONS; FROM GOING UP A HILL IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED, TO JUST DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. ON A FEW OCCASIONS, WHILE TRAVELING ON HIGHWAYS, MY CAR WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT INTO PASSING GEAR AND EVEN SEEMED TO LOSE POWER AT SPEEDS OF 55-65 MPH WHEN TRYING TO PASS OTHER VEHICLES. ON TWO SPECIFIC OCCASIONS, MY CAR WAS UNABLE TO GO INTO PASSING GEAR AS I TRIED TO PASS ANOTHER CAR. HOWEVER, LAST WEEK AND ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO I LOST POWER WHILE I WENT TO PASS A VEHICLE ON A TWO LANE ROAD AND HAD TO DROP BACK BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION DID NOT RESPOND AND ACTUALLY LOST POWER AT A MOMENT THAT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A HEAD-ON COLLISION IF THE CAR I WAS PASSING WOULD HAVE SLOWED DOWN AT THE SAME TIME I LOST POWER AND THE ON COMING CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN. THIS HAS BEEN SCARY AND SURPRISES ME BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO BE AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. THEY SAID IT IS HAPPENING TO MANY OTHER SIMILAR VEHICLES AS WELL. I WOULD HAVE REPORTED THIS SOONER IF I HAD KNOWN THIS NHTSA SITE WAS AVAILABLE. I DO NOT BELIEVE THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO JUST KEEP PUTTING OUT UNSAFE VEHICLES AND CONTINUE REPAIRING THEM WHEN SUCH A DANGEROUS CONDITION RISKS THE LIVES OF ANYONE WHO PASSES ANOTHER VEHICLE ON A TWO-LANE HIGHWAY. I HOPE IT DOESN'T TAKE A SCHOOL BUS WITH KIDS GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT AS A RESULT OF THIS DEFECT TO GET CORRECTIVE ACTION TAKEN TO REMEDY THIS UNSAFE CONDITION.

  13. Power train, May 23, 2017

I PURCHASED MY FIRST FORD FOCUS IN 2012 AND WAS FORCED TO TRADE IT AFTER NEEDING 3 CLUTCH REPLACEMENTS IN ONLY 20K MILES OF DRIVING. AFTER REASSURANCE FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY OF A NEW REDESIGNED TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH IN THE 2015 MODELS WITH NO KNOWN ISSUES AFTER CONSIDERABLE TESTING, I TRADED MY FIRST FOCUS FOR MY SECOND. TO MY OUTRAGE, NOT ONLY WAS I SOLD A CAR WITH A KNOWN FAULTY CLUTCH BUT I JUST RECEIVED MY SECOND CLUTCH REPLACEMENT.. THIS TIME IN ONLY 13K MILES OF DRIVING. IN A REQUEST TO FORD TO BUY MY CAR BACK, I WAS TOLD MY TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE WITH MY FIRST FOCUS WOULD NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE CURRENT REQUEST FOR BUYBACK. NEXT, I WAS TOLD BY A REGIONAL MANAGER REVIEWING MY CASE, THAT THE CLUTCHES CONTINUED TO FAIL BECAUSE I DID NOT "DRIVE MY CAR AGGRESSIVELY ENOUGH" DESPITE FORD ACKNOWLEDGING THOUSANDS BEING AFFECTED BY THEIR FAULTY CLUTCHES AND CURRENT CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST FORD. FINALLY, IN SOLIDARITY FOR DENYING MY REQUEST FOR BUYBACK, I WAS OFFERED 6-FREE OIL CHANGES (VALUED ~$180), A SLAP IN FACE FOR THE NEARLY $50,000 I HAVE PAID FORD OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS FOR TWO FORD FOCUSES. IN TOTAL, I HAVE HAD 5 CLUTCH REPLACEMENTS IN 5 YEARS IN TWO CARS; UNACCEPTABLE.

  14. Power train, May 8, 2017

TRANSMISSION SHUTTERS WHEN TAKING OFF AND WHEN SHIFTING GEARS. A POOR EXCUSE FOR A TRANSMISSION WHEN THE REST OF THE CAR IS GREAT. IM SORRY FORD BUT THIS IS NOT NORMAL! THE NHTSA NEEDS TO QUIT STALLING AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.

  15. Power train, Service brakes, Fuel/propulsion system, May 8, 2017

THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BUT DECELERATION WAS SIGNIFICANTLY DELAYED. THE STEERING SHUDDERED AND THE CAR JERKED FROM SIDE TO SIDE. FRONT END SHUDDERED REPEATEDLY.

  16. Power train, Apr 22, 2017

I JUST BOUGHT A USED 2015 FORD FOCUS, RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING THERE WAS JUMPING AND SPUTTERING AS I START DRIVING. I SEE THIS AS A SAFETY PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE NOT JUST FOR ME BUT OTHERS WITH THIS PROBLEM. AS YOU CAN SEE IF YOUR READING THIS I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM, OVER 50 PEOPLE WITH IT, JUST CALLED DIFFERENT NAMES. I READ ALL OVER THE INTERNET ABOUT IT, LAWSUITS IN TWO STATES, ...JUST HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO COMPLAIN BEFORE THIS GETS RECALLED !!!!!!

  17. Power train, Apr 14, 2017

TRANSMISSION SKIPS, SURGES, STALLS AT LOW SPEED OR ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. I AM SEEING LOTS OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE FROM OWNERS AND NO REMEDIES FROM FORD!!! A RECALL MUST BE STARTED!!! VERY DANGERIOUS.

  18. Power train, Seat belts, Apr 6, 2017

TAKATA RECALL. WHEN DRIVING COMPUTER OR TRANSMISSION DOES NOT CHANGE GEARS ON TIME. SOMETIMES STAYS IN FIRST GEAR PAST 20MPH. PROBLEM WHEN DRIVING ON FREEWAY AND NEED TO SPEED UP. TAKATA RECALL. ALSO SEATBELTS WILL NOT RELEASE SOMETIMES WHEN I NEED TO GET OUT OF CAR. IT WILL PARTIALLY UNLOCK BUT SEATBELT WILL STILL BE LOCKED IN PLACE. I MUST PUSH SEATBELT BACK IN PLACE TO TOTALLY LOCK IT AGAIN THE PRESS RED BUTTON TO RELEASE. VERY DANGEROUS

  19. Vehicle speed control, Other or unspecified, Fuel/propulsion system, Apr 5, 2017

MY CAR STALLS SHAKES AND STUDDERS WHEN I ACCELERATE, EVEN AFTER I TURN THE TRACTION CONTROL OFF IT CONTINUES ,I'VE NEARLY BEEN REAR ENDED PLENTY OF TIMES. I DON'T FEEL SAFE AND EITHER DOES MY PASSENGERS AS AND I'M SURE THIS JERKING AS AND TIRE SPINNING WILL CAUSE OTHER PROBLEMS.

  20. Steering, Mar 24, 2017

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 FORD FOCUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE POWER STEERING MALFUNCTIONED AND CAUSED THE STEERING WHEEL TO BECOME VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. DURING THE INCIDENT, THE "STEERING ASSIST MALFUNCTION" MESSAGE DISPLAYED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE EPAS ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED AND PROGRAMMED. THE FAILURE WAS REMEDIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,039.

  21. Seat belts, Mar 18, 2017

TAKATA RECALL WHEN TAKING OFF SEATBELT IT DOES NOT FULLY RELEASE FROM LOCK. CLICK THE UNLOCK/RELEASE BUTTON TO SEATBELT AND IT CLICKS UNLOCK BUT DOES NOT RELEASE SEATBELT FROM LOCK. MUST PUSH SEATBELT BACK INTO LOCK AND CLICK BUTTON AGAIN, SOMETIMES MULTIPLE TIMES IN ORDER FOR SEAT TO RELEASE FROM LATCH/LOCK. ONLY KNOWN TO HAPPEN TO CAR WHEN PARKED. CAR ON OR OFF SEATBELT DOESN'T RELEASE.

  22. Power train, Mar 13, 2017

WE BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN 2015. LAST YEAR THE TRANSMISSION WOULD SKIP OR JUMP, JERK AT LOW SPEED AND ALSO WHEN YOU EXCELLERATED. TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY FIXED, WE THOUGHT. THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP NOW FOR THE SAME ISSUE. IT'S ONLY BEEN 6 MONTHS, AND THE CAR HAS ONLY 21,000 MILES ON IT. CITY STREET AND HIGHWAY DRIVING.
