Recalls and investigations

  1. Seat belts, frontApr 8, 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.

  2. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, wheel speed sensor/tone ringOct 24, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  3. Service brakes, hydraulic, power assist, vacuumSep 6, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.

As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

  4. EquipmentApr 26, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2009-2014 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, 2009 GMC Topkick 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 Series and Isuzu F Series, and 2009-2018 Chevrolet Express, and GMC Savana vehicles, equipped with certain Plastic-Handle Fire Extinguishers or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, instructing them to contact Kidde to get a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began June 11, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Isuzu customer service at 1-866-441-9638. GM's number for this recall is 18146.

  5. Air bags, frontalJul 10, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. 8. Seat beltsApr 12, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks manufactured January 29, 2013, to January 21, 2015. While entering the vehicle, the seat belt tensioner cable may be positioned such that the driver slides over it. This movement may result in the fatigue and separation of the cable.

If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent the tensioner from being damaged. Any tensioner that has already been damaged will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15822.

NHTSA Campaign ID 21V245000 Truck is issuing a service air bag alarm, was my truck given wrong part on original recall. Purchased 2 months ago

  3. Steering, Sep 8, 2022

At low speeds my power steering will cut out. Today I almost hit a guy at a gas station when my steering went dead and got stiff for a second then came back. After some research I see over a million trucks were recalled for this.

  5. Steering, Engine, Aug 30, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while her husband was driving approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated and then disappeared. The contact stated that the loss of power steering functionality had increased over time. Additionally, the vehicle had started to stall at low speeds. The contact researched online and related the steering failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V414000 (Steering). The contact noticed that the "Service Park Assist" light was illuminated when the vehicle stalled. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 215,000.

  6. Steering, Aug 24, 2022

In the process of making a right turn my power steering suddenly quit working causing my vehicle to cross over into oncoming traffic. There was an eighteen wheeler that had to make a lane change to avoid a collision. At this time I had a warning light come on stating a problem with the power steering. I was able to slowly drive the vehicle to a local repair shop. The shop had to reprogram the steering module. I know my model had a safety recall for that very issue and I had it repaired at a GMC dealer in 2017. Apparently the problem still exists and I called GMC Corporate and was told that my vehicle had been repaired and was to old for any assistance. I now have no confidence in my vehicle knowing that this problem could occur at any time.

  7. Service brakes, Engine, Jul 30, 2022

the catalytic converter failed at 110,000 miles and the brake boost hydraulics failed to work properly at 115,000. The electronic stability control started acting erratically at 115,000 miles also.

  8. Structure, Jul 13, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while he was under the vehicle performing a routine check-up, he noticed that the frame of the vehicle looked rusted. The contact poked his finger into the subframe under the rear passenger’s side causing his finger to go into the frame of the vehicle. An appointment was scheduled with the dealer for the vehicle to be inspected. The manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact that the vehicle should be diagnosed. The failure mileage was 69,073.

  9. Service brakes, Jul 10, 2022

At low speed and idle, brakes lose power and pedal becomes hard to push. Once RPMs increase, brakes regain full use.

  10. Steering, Jul 7, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist. The failure nearly caused a collision. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 85,870.

  11. Air bags, Seat belts, Jul 6, 2022, crash

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra. The contact stated that while driving at 42 MPH, she was involved in a three-vehicle accident after a vehicle involved in another accident ricocheted and hit her vehicle. The driver's side air bag exploded but did not deploy. Black smoke was released from the steering wheel and the air bag fell on the contact's left leg. The driver seat belt retractor fell apart during the accident which sliced the top part of the contact's ear; in addition, the failure sent a part of the contact's earing into her ear canal. The driver of the vehicle that was originally hit in the accident died the next day in the hospital; another passenger in that same vehicle was critically injured. The contact was treated days later at a hospital for a severe burn to the left leg due to the airbag. Her leg remained infected despite the treatment received at the hospital. The contact's ear was not treated. A police report was filed. The contact's vehicle was initially towed to an independent mechanic and then to a friend's home. The contact's insurance had yet to make a decision on the repair for the vehicle. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V245000(Seat Belts) and 17V437000(Air Bags, Seat Belts) which she linked to her failure. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was 93,622.

  12. Service brakes, Jul 1, 2022

"Service Trailer Brake System" alert on dash. This is a safety concern for 2 reasons; the first being the chime made to warn the driver is distracting, persistent, and annoying. The second is the trailer brake system is apparently not functioning properly which is a danger while towing. This is not the first time this has happened and is a danger to me, my family, and other on the road.

  13. Engine, Jun 19, 2022

My truck recently had an engine lifter fail when pulling out onto a very busy road. When I accelerated hard into traffic my check engine came on and I suddenly lost most of the engine power and it went into limp mode. I was almost rear ended when my truck nearly came to a stop. I was told it is a defective/poor design of the cylinder deactivation system from the dealer. Ther is no fix but to replace with the same lifter part number which was done and it also failed again 4 days later in a similar situation turning onto a road into traffic. My truck is now back in the shop to have lifters replaced twice in one weeks time.

  14. Electrical system, Service brakes, Jun 14, 2022

Service trailer brake system warning message. Trailer brake controller inoperable.

  15. Steering, Electrical system, Service brakes, Jun 7, 2022

Whenever driving I get a message stating that I need to service my trailer brake system. This is most likely due to cheap wiring installed by the manufacture. This has been going on for over a couple of months. Just recently, I was making a slow turn and my vehicle shut off on me and I lost control of my brakes and steering and all power to the vehicle which is a huge safety concern and I am unsure if they are related or not

  16. Electrical system, May 27, 2022

While driving, the vehicle will briefly shut down and lose all engine and electrical power. The GMC dealer was alerted and I was advised to the battery cable that were burned out and the starter shield.

  17. Electrical system, Air bags, Service brakes, May 21, 2022

Air bags didn't deploy on 2 separate incidences and brakes went out last incident

  18. Steering, Electrical system, Vehicle speed control, May 10, 2022

When I slow down to make a turn, my truck loses power making the turn very dangerous. I lose control of the vehicle for a few seconds due to loss of power. It is very dangerous for me to make turns.

  19. Steering, May 7, 2022

Lose power steering at low speeds typically in a low speed turn. Stabilitrack warning appears on the dash and sometimes lose power to the entire dash including radio and A/C.

  20. Engine, May 6, 2022

AFM lifters are failing at a high rate. Had lifters replaced for $3k a year an half ago at 125k miles and they failed again at 149k miles just recently The problem is getting worse with the newer models

  21. Suspension, May 3, 2022

Cross frame member ahead of rear wheels has rotted and failed. It is located behind the cab and is the cross frame that holds up gas tank and forms the anchor point for the rear shock absorbers. I have been told by dealer that truck is not safe to drive. It is now at a body shop. The suspension is compromised, gas tank could fall, and drivability safety is affected. Truck is only 8 years old, the cross member is not visible to consumer, there has been no undue use or environmental conditions to cause the rot and failure of the component. Further, the manufacturer does not sell a replacement part, so the entire frame of the truck would need to be replaced.

  22. Power train, Engine, Apr 20, 2022

My vehicle recently started "shuttering" while driving. Service report says it is a "common GMC issue with the Torque Converter", $3200. They also reported a "substantial leak" in the radiator, and again, says it is a very common fault of GMC Trucks. And another $2700. If these conditions are as common as they indicate, why are there no corrective measures?

  23. Electrical system, Apr 5, 2022

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that upon depression on the brake pedal, the trailer braking system warning message appeared on the instrument panel. The contact also stated that a fuel odor would emit from the vehicle. The vehicle had yet to be serviced or diagnosed. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 122,000.

  24. Electrical system, Forward collision avoidance, Apr 5, 2022

Trailer brake system is blinking to much

  25. Power train, Mar 30, 2022

I was driving and was almost home when I heard a pop and started getting jerked back and forth and then just slowed down almost to a complete stop with vehicles approaching quickly almost causing a multiple vehicle pile up I’ve heard multiple people complain about the particular transmission that is put in these gmc and chevy 1500s and am just confused with all of the problems I see on the internet and hear from peers in person why it has not been recalled yet if need be I will make a survey of gmc and chevy owners to let it be known that the transmissions on these vehicles were poorly built and need to be recalled before anybody has this problem that I had today
