Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorJul 1, 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Dealers will replace the left and right side RRAB modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 18, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available. Phase I owner notification letters were mailed on May 5, 2022. Phase II owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on May 31, 2022. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. This recall supersedes NHTSA recall number 20V-736. GM's number for this recall is N202324251.

  2. Seat belts, frontApr 8, 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.

  3. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorNov 25, 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator.

If the end cap separates from the inflator, the compressed gas will escape and the end cap can be propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the RRAB modules on the left and/or right side, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on December 22, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. Note: GM filed a new recall, number 21V-504 that supersedes this recall. All vehicles previously recalled under 20V-736 will now be repaired under the new recall number 21V-504. GM's numbers for this recall are N202309680, N202309681, and N202309682.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, wheel speed sensor/tone ringOct 24, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  5. Service brakes, hydraulic, power assist, vacuumSep 6, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.

As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

  6. Steering, electric power assist systemSep 7, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade vehicles. Electric power steering (EPS) assist may be lost momentarily, followed by a sudden return of EPS assist.

If EPS assist is lost and then suddenly returns, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the EPS module software, free of charge. The recall began October 12, 2018. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18289.

  7. Air bags, frontalJul 10, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17287.

  8. Air bags, frontalSep 8, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, 3500 HD, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles and 2014-2017 Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500, Trax, Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle, GMC Sierra 1500, Buick Encore, and 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Spark EV and SS vehicles. In the affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test.

The recall began on October 13, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 16007.

  9. Seat beltsApr 12, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks manufactured January 29, 2013, to January 21, 2015. While entering the vehicle, the seat belt tensioner cable may be positioned such that the driver slides over it. This movement may result in the fatigue and separation of the cable.

If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent the tensioner from being damaged. Any tensioner that has already been damaged will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15822.

  1. Power train, Jun 17, 2020

MY 2015 GMC SIERRA HAS THE 8 SPEED TRANSMISSION WHICH HAS BEEN AN ISSUE SINCE I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED IN THE FALL OF 2018 AND THE TRUCK/TRANNY RAN GOOD FOR ABOUT 10 MONTHS. THEN IN LATE SUMMER AND EARLY FALL OF 2019, THE TRUCK JERKING HARD SHIFTS STARTED TO APPEAR. IN OCTOBER OF 2019 I BROUGHT MY TRUCK INTO MY DEALER TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT MY TRANNY DUE TO THE REALLY HARD SHIFTS FROM 1ST TO 2ND OR 2ND TO 3RD AND VICE VERSA 3RD TO 2ND AND 2ND TO 1ST. I HAD TO PAY A $80 DIAGNOSIS FEE AND THEY REPROGRAMMED MY TRANNY AND THE ECU TO SMOOTH OUT THE SHIFTS AND NOT MAKE THE SHIFTS SO HARD. IN ALL THE SOFTWARE REPROGRAM DID GET RID OF THE HARD SHIFTS, BUT IN RETURN NOW MY VEHICLE DROVE LIKE IT HAS A 6 SPEED TRANSMISSION INSTEAD OF AN 8 SPEED. IN JUNE OF 2020 I BROUGHT MY TRUCK BACK INTO MY DEALER TO LOOK AT MY TRANNY AGAIN! NOW MY TRANNY FELT LIKE IT WAS ALWAYS "HUNTING" FOR A DIFFERENT GEAR. WHEN DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 75 MPH 1600 RPM, IF THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT OF HEAD WIND OR I STARTED TO DRIVE UP A HILL, THE TRANNY WOULD DOWNSHIFT AND RPM'S JUMP UP TO 2200 RPM TO MAKE UP FOR THE DIFFERENCE IN ROAD GRADE, SAME AS WHEN DRIVING IN TOWN UP A HILLAT 35MPH. A 8 SPEED TRANSMISSION SHOULD NOT BE DOING THAT! AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS (75 MPH) MY PASSENGER SIDE SEAT WILL SIT THERE AND JUST WIGGLE AND SHAKE BACK AND FORTH. I HAVE CHANGED OUT BALL JOINTS AND STRUTS WITH BRAND NEW ONES THINKING THAT WAS THE PROBLEM AND THE SEAT STILL WIGGLES BACK AND FORTH. WHEN DRIVING MY VEHICLE IT FEELS LIKE I AM DRIVING WITH A 6 SPEED TRANSMISSION THAN AN 8 SPEED. I HAVE READ THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM IN THESE MODEL YEAR GM VEHICLES AND I FEEL GM NEEDS TO FINALLY ADDRESS THIS ISSUE ONCE AND FOR ALL AND KEEP THEIR GM CUSTOMERS SATISFIED. I DIDN'T PLAN ON BUYING A 3 YEAR OLD USED VEHICLE FOR IT TO HAVE THE ISSUES IT HAS HAD SINCE I HAVE OWNED IT. *TR

  2. Exterior lighting, Jun 8, 2020

WHILE THE HEAD LIGHTS AND FOG LIGHTS ARE ON, THE RIGHT HEAD AND FOG LIGHTS ARE DIM BUT THE LEFT HEAD AND FOG LIGHTS ARE BRIGHT. ALSO THE RIGHT TURN SIGNAL SHOWS ERROR MESSAGE ON THE CLUSTER THAT THE BULB NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND YOU CAN HEAR IT BLINKING FAST, BUT WHEN I EXIT THE VEHICLE TO INSPECT THE SIGNAL I NOTICE THAT IT IS NOT BLOWN AND IT WORKS FINE BUT I STILL GET THE ERROR MESSAGE AND THE FAST BLINKING. BOTH STATED PROBLEMS OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY AND WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. *TR

  3. Visibility, Equipment, May 22, 2020

THE AIR CONDITIONING WENT OUT SUDDENLY, JUST AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. AFTER RESEARCH, THIS IS AN ISSUE KNOWN TO GM AS THEY ARE CURRENTLY SUBJECTS IN PROPOSED CLASS-ACTION LAWSUITS IN 2 STATES REGARDING THIS DEFECT. *TR

  4. Service brakes, May 15, 2020

BRAKING ISSUE. WHILE TRAVELING IN A DRIVE THRU, VEHICLE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, PULSATED SOME, AND REQUIRED EXTREME EFFORT TO STOP. THIS OCCURRED DURING SUBSEQUENT BRAKING INCIDENTS WHILE MOVING AND STOPPING IN THE DRIVE-THRU. AFTER LEAVING, BRAKE PEDAL FELT OK. GOOGLED SYMPTOMS WHICH MATCHED MY CIRCUMSTANCES AND LISTED A RECALL. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO RECALL LISTED ON NHTSA. SEEMS A LITTLE TROUBLING AS THIS APPEARS TO AFFECT 3.4 MILLION GM VEHICLES. *TR

  7. Steering, May 4, 2020

PICKUP HAS HAD REOCCURRING SERVICE POWER STEERING MESSAGE COME UP IN INFORMATION CENTER. TOOK TO GM AND THEY SAID IT NEEDED A NEW NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. BOUGHT ONE AND INSTALLED IT. STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. UPON DONG SOME SEARCHING, ITS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AMONG CERTAIN GM VEHICLES. ONE WEEKEND THE POWER STEERING QUIT WORKING ALL TOGETHER AT 70 MPH ON A CURVE. TALK ABOUT SCARY! I CALLED GM CUSTOMER SERVICE TO ASK ABOUT COVERAGE ON THE ISSUE AND WAS DENIED BECAUSE MY VEHICLE WAS NOT ONE AFFECTED BY THE SUSPECT FAULTY PARTS. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN GM'S LACK OF CARING FOR MY SAFETY IN THIS SITUATION. WILL NOT BE PURCHASING ANOTHER GM. IF THEY NO THAT THIS IS THEIR PROBLEM I TRULY BELIEVE THEY SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT AND TAKE CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS.

  10. Other or unspecified, Mar 28, 2020

HAVE HAD MY VEHICLE AT THE SHOP FOR TRANSMISSION ISSUES SEVERAL TIMES. TWO OF THE TIMES, ISSUES WERE DUPLICATED AND PARTS REPLACED, BUT SAME ISSUES CONTINUE AS SOON AS I GET IT BACK. MY COMPLAINT WHEN I TAKE IT IN IS ALWAYS THE SAME. NORMALLY WHEN I ACCELERATE FROM A DEAD STOP FORWARD OR REVERSE, THE TRANSMISSION MAKES A THUMPING NOISE. IT HAS STEADILY GOTTEN WORSE. A LOT OF TIMES NOW IF I TAKE MY FOOT OFF GAS FOR A SECOND, AT FASTER SPEEDS, AND THEN PUT FOOT RIGHT BACK ON GAS, IT MAKES THE SAME THUMPING NOISE AND SOMETIMES A GRINDING NOISE LIKE IT'S STUCK BETWEEN GEARS. THIS LAST TIME I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND WOULD MOST LIKELY GET WORSE AS VEHICLE GETS OLDER.

  11. Steering, Electrical system, Mar 28, 2020

AT SLOW SPEEDS, MAINLY WHEN BACKING AND TURNING WHEEL WHEN GOING FORWARD AT VERY SLOW SPEED, STEERING LOSES POWER. ALSO SOME TIMES HARD TO TURN WHEN VEHICLE NOT IN MOTION AT ALL. THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED ALL INTERIOR LIGHTS AND RADIO FLASHED TOTALLY OFF AND RIGHT BACK ON. I HEARD A DINGING/WARNING NOISE AND A WARNING MESSAGE FLASHED BUT WENT OFF BEFORE I HAD A CHANCE TO READ IT.

  12. Structure, Mar 13, 2020

THE PAIN ON THE GMC VEHICLE IS DEFECTIVE IT STARTED TO PEEL ON ITS OWN UNDER HEAVY RAIN! THAT HAS NEVER OCCURRED TO ANY OF MY VEHICLES THAT I HAVE OWNED FOR OVER 15 YEARS! I HAVE READ THERE ARE MANY CONSUMERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE THE VEHICLE IS LESS THAN 5 YEARS OLD!

  13. Service brakes, Mar 3, 2020

VIRTUALLY UNABLE TO DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL AT LOWER SPEEDS - TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE. "NO RECALLS AVAILABLE" ACCORDING TO THE DEALER DATABASE, BUT THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE SAME BRAKE RECALL ISSUE THEY REFUSED TO ADDRESS FOR A FEW YEARS UNTIL 2 PEOPLE DIED.

  14. Suspension, Feb 26, 2020

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 GMC SIERRA 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE RIDE QUALITY WAS VERY ROUGH. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. ADDITIONALLY, THE CONTACT WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE FRONT STRUTS AND REAR SHOCKS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE LOCAL DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS THEN INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUTSIDE OF THE 36,000 MILE WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.

  17. Other or unspecified, Feb 18, 2020

THERE IS A LEAK ON THE TOP RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE A/C CONDENSER RESULTING IN HOT AIR COMING OUT OF THE VENTS WHEN THE A/C IS ENABLED. AFTER SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AND GM HAS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. GM ALREADY ISSUED A TSB FOR THE 2015 - 2017 TAHOES, YUKONS, AND ESCALADES WITH THE SAME ENGINES AND EQUIPMENT AS MY 2015 GMC SIERRA WITH 45000 MI. TSB # 17336 AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSER (COMBI-COOLER) REFRIGERANT LEAK

MY TRUCK HAS ALREADY HAD THE RECALL FOR THE SAME ISSUE EARLIER THIS YEAR. WHEN THIS 1ST HAPPENED IT ALMOST CAUSED ME TO WRECK INTO A FENCE

  22. Power train, Feb 4, 2020

A FEW MONTHS AGO I WAS ACCELERATING FROM A STOP LIGHT THE TRUCK SUDDENLY AND VIOLENTLY JUMPED FORWARD IT HAD FELT AS IF I WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND. HOWEVER NO ONE WAS THERE! I DID TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE CONDITION AND NO CODES WERE STORED. YESTERDAY THIS HAPPEND ONCE AGAIN! I WOULD HAVE SWORN SOME ONE HIT ME, THE TRUCK SHOOK AND JUMPED FORWARD SO HARD IT FELT AS IF A BUSS HIT ME. ONCE AGAIN NO ONE THERE! I AM MAKING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE I SEE MORE PEOPLE ARE HAVING THESES ISSUES AND GM CALLS THEM "NORMAL" SORRY BUT I HAVE DRIVEN TRUCKS FOR YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD ONE DO THIS! THIS IS A POTENTIAL HAZARD BECAUSE IF AT ANY TIME A CAR WAS IN FRONT OF ME I WOULD HAVE MOST LIKELY HIT THE CAR! PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE!
