Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorJul 1, 2021

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

Dealers will replace the left and right side RRAB modules, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 18, 2021. Owners will receive a second notice when the remedy is available. Phase I owner notification letters were mailed on May 5, 2022. Phase II owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on May 31, 2022. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. This recall supersedes NHTSA recall number 20V-736. GM's number for this recall is N202324251.

  2. Seat belts, frontApr 8, 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2014-2015 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles that may have received an incorrect replacement tensioner cable assembly as part of a previous recall remedy or a subsequent repair. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.

A broken pretensioner cable reduces the effectiveness of the driver's seat belt, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver seat belt lap pretensioner, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N212330040.

  3. Air bags, side/window, curtain, inflatorNov 25, 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks. The roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator.

If the end cap separates from the inflator, the compressed gas will escape and the end cap can be propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the RRAB modules on the left and/or right side, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed on December 22, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. Note: GM filed a new recall, number 21V-504 that supersedes this recall. All vehicles previously recalled under 20V-736 will now be repaired under the new recall number 21V-504. GM's numbers for this recall are N202309680, N202309681, and N202309682.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, wheel speed sensor/tone ringOct 24, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.

Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

  5. Service brakes, hydraulic, power assist, vacuumSep 6, 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.

As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

  6. Steering, electric power assist systemSep 7, 2018

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade vehicles. Electric power steering (EPS) assist may be lost momentarily, followed by a sudden return of EPS assist.

If EPS assist is lost and then suddenly returns, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the EPS module software, free of charge. The recall began October 12, 2018. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 18289.

  7. Air bags, frontalJul 10, 2017

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17287.

  8. Air bags, frontalSep 8, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, 3500 HD, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles and 2014-2017 Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500, Trax, Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle, GMC Sierra 1500, Buick Encore, and 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Spark EV and SS vehicles. In the affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test.

The recall began on October 13, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. 9. Seat beltsApr 12, 2016

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks manufactured January 29, 2013, to January 21, 2015. While entering the vehicle, the seat belt tensioner cable may be positioned such that the driver slides over it. This movement may result in the fatigue and separation of the cable.

If the tensioner cable separates, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will modify the vehicles to prevent the tensioner from being damaged. Any tensioner that has already been damaged will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15822.

    RIGHT BRAKE LIGHT IS OUT

  3. Service brakes, Jul 10, 2018

WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED THE PEDAL IS HARD AND VEHICLE DOES NOT STOP. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN GOING SLOW FOR EXAMPLE IN PARKING LOTS ETC. I HAVE READ OTHER ARTICLES WHERE PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING SAME THING AT HIGH SPEEDS. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME, BUT IT STARTED 7/1/2018 AND I'VE EXPERIENCED THIS FOUR TIMES NOW. TOOK TO DEALER THIS MORNING THEY REFUSED TO LOOK AT ARTICLES EXPLAINING WHAT I'VE FOUND.

  4. Power train, Seat belts, Fuel/propulsion system, Jul 2, 2018

TRUCK WILL NOT CHANGE GEARS AND SPUTTERING. BAD GAS MILEAGE AND NOT WANTING TO START.

  5. Other or unspecified, Jul 1, 2018

A/C CONDENSER LEAKING FREON IT'S A KNOWN PROBLEM FOR GM

  6. Service brakes, Jun 6, 2018, crash

WHILE IN MOTION THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES HARD AND IS DIFFICULT TO STOP. I BELIEVE THIS IS THE CAUSE OF A LOW SPEED INCIDENT I HAD EARLIER THIS YEAR. THE ISSUE OCCURRES MOSTLY AT SLOW SPEEDS IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. IF FEELS LIKE THE BRAKE BOOSTER FAILS AND THE PEDAL IS BOTTOMED OUT. IT HAPPENS FREQUESNTLY WHILE HAULING A TRAILER IN REVERSE. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

  7. Power train, May 25, 2018

STARTING THE VEHICLE I'M PUTTING THE TRUCK IN REVERSE, THE TRUCK LUNGES BACKWARDS. ALSO A VIOLENT JERK OF THE VEHICLE HAPPENS. THIS HAPPENS A MAJORITY OF THE TIME. PUTTING THE VEHICLE INTO GEAR TO DRIVE I HAVE A VIOLENT JERK AND A LOUD NOISE. THE TRUCK DOES NOT LUNGE FORWARD WHEN PLACING THE TRUCK INTO DRIVE. THIS HAPPENS A COUPLE OF TIMES A DAY. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT.

  8. Service brakes, May 15, 2018

BRAKE FAILURE DUE TO BAD VACUUM PUMP

  9. Wheels, May 10, 2018

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A GMC SIERRA 1500 FROM CARMAX FITTED WITH A SET OF CROSSCONTACT LX20'S. THE TRUCK HAD ABOUT 18,000 MILES OR FEWER WHEN I BOUGHT IT AND IT NOW HAS 31,000 MILES ON IT. THE TWO FRONT TIRES STARTED TO DISINTEGRATE AROUND 28,000 MILES AND NOW HAVE BECOME UNSAFE AND UNUSABLE. I CONTACTED YOUR CUSTOMER SUPPORT OFFICE AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME AS I WAS THE SECOND OWNER AND I SHOULD CONTACT CARMAX. OF COURSE CARMAX SAYS, CALL CONTINENTAL. THE CODE ON ALL 4 OF MY TIRES IS A32A WBDE 2215. I HAVE ENCLOSED A FEW PHOTOS OF THE FRONT TIRES, THE BACK TIRES ARE SHOWING THE SAME SEPARATION FROM THE STEEL BELT, BUT NONE OF THE TREAD HAS COME OFF YET. I BELIEVE THE TURNING BACK AND FORTH OF THE FRONT TIRES HAS ACCELERATED THEIR DEMISE. I HAVE PURCHASED 4 NEW GOODYEAR TIRES BECAUSE I TRULY FEAR FOR MY FAMILIES SAFETY. I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION IN THIS MATTER.

  10. Service brakes, May 4, 2018

WHILE DRIVING IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC SPEEDS THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES HARD AND THE TRUCK WILL NOT STOP. I HAVE NOTICED ON OTHER FORUMS THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE.

  11. Engine, May 4, 2018

AC BLOWING WARM AIR - MAY HAVE A CONDITION WHERE THERMAL CYCLING ON THE COMBINATION TRANSMISSION FLUID/OIL AND AC CONDENSER COOLER CREATES A CRACK THAT MAY ALLOW REFRIGERANT TO ESCAPE. THIS CONDITION CONSEQUENTLY MAY DEACTIVATE THE AC SYSTEM.

  12. Engine, May 4, 2018

TAKATA RECALL. I RECENTLY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY CONFIRMED MULTIPLE CALLS ON THE AC CONDENSER LEAKING FREON. WE HAVE TWO 2015 GMC SIERRAS WITH THE SAME LEAK. A SERVICE CENTER EMPLOYEE/MECHANIC AT BOB BROCKLAND IN COLUMBIA IL VERIFIED MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS.

  13. Engine, May 3, 2018

MY AC CONDITIONS DEVELOPED A PIN HOLE LEAK ALONG THE SEAM/BRAZE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 GMC SIERRA 1500. WHILE DRIVING UNKNOWN SPEEDS, HOT AIR EMERGED FROM THE AIR CONDITIONING UNIT WHILE IT WAS ACTIVATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSER WAS LEAKING. THE CONTACT CALLED A LOCAL DEALER (BECK AND MASTEN BUICK GMC NORTH, 11300 FARM TO MARKET 1960 RD W, HOUSTON, TX 77065, 281-469-5222) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A SERVICE BULLETIN. 16. Steering, Electronic stability control (ESC), Engine, Apr 28, 2018

WHILE AT LOW SPEED AND AT STOPS WHILE TURNING THE WHEEL THE ENTIRE DASH AND ENGINE CUT OFF AND COME BACK ON. THE STEERING ALSO LOCKS UP TO A POINT OF NOT TURNING EITHER WAY. ALL INCIDENTS HAPPENED ON A VERY SMOOTH FLAT ROAD. THIS PUT MY LIFE IN DANGER ON ONE OCCASION WHILE TURNING ON A HIGHWAY WHERE MY ENTIRE TRUCK SHUT OFF MID TURN.I HAVE VIDEO OF THIS OCCURRING ON MY PHONE IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO REACH OUT TO ME FOR THAT. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A STABILTRAC ISSUE, ONE OF GMC'S TRACTION CONTROL BRANDING THINGS. I HAVE SEEN THIS ISSUE ALL OVER GOOGLE WHILE SEARCHING IT AND IT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED! I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THIS WILL HAPPEN.

  17. Exterior lighting, Apr 26, 2018

THE HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2015 GMC SERRIA 1500 SLT ARE UNSAFE. THE HEADLIGHTS DO NOT LIGHT TO THE SIDES ADEQUITELY AND THIS IS VERY APPARENT WHEN MAKING A TURN AT NIGHT. I HAVE ALSO READ ABOUT THIS SAME HEADLIGHT SAFETY CONCERN ON SEVERAL WEBSITES POSTED BY OTHER OWNERS.

  18. Service brakes, Apr 18, 2018

I WAS DRIVING DOWN I20 IN DALLAS IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, THE TRAFFIC WAS HEAVY BUT MOVING AT 70 MILES AN HOUR. I SAW BRAKE LIGHTS IN FROM OF ME, WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD, I COULD NOT PRESS IT WITH ONE FOOT AND I COULD NOT SLOW DOWN. I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN BY PUTTING BOTH FEET ON THE PEDAL WITH ALL MY WEIGHT IT FELT LIKE IT WAS FOREVER BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO BE UNABLE TO STOP.I DROVE ANOTHER 15 MINUTES GOING VERY SLOW AND SCARED. PARKED MY TRUCK IN THE DRIVE AND HAD A TOW TRUCK PULL IT TO THE DEALERSHIP CLOSEST TO MY HOUSE. MY TRUCK ONLY HAS 58,000. I REALLY WAS SCARED FOR MY LIFE IF YOU HAVE EVER DRIVEN IN RUSH HOUR DALLAS TRAFFIC YOU UNDERSTAND . I COULD HAVE LOST MY LIFE OR BE SERIOUSLY INJURED. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME TODAY THEY HAD NOT HEARD OF THIS ISSUE. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY DOUBT GMC CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID WAS A VACUUM PUMP ON THE BREAKS. I LOOKED ON LINE AND OTHERS HAVE REPORTED THIS SAME ISSUE. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. STILL SHAKING OVER THE INCIDENT . I HOPE THIS PROBLEM IS ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED

  19. Steering, Other or unspecified, Apr 17, 2018

WHEN TURNING OR BACKING UP AT SLOW SPEEDS STEERING IS LOST OR THE WHEEL JERKS VIOLENTLY. THERE ARE CHIMES AND MESSAGES DISPLAYED FOR STABILLITRAKAND ANTI-THEFT WARNING. MESSAGE TO ROLL THE WINDOW ALL THE WAY DOWN AND UP WILL ALSO APPEAR VEHICLE ELECTRICAL POWER IS AFFECTED. THE SYSTEM SEEMS TO KEEP RESETTING. ALL POWER WILL BE LOST AND VEHICLE WILL NOT START.

  20. Other or unspecified, Apr 10, 2018

AC CONDENSER HAD TO BE REPLACE DUE TO LEAK. FAULTY DESIGN & INSTALLATION. GM ALREADY RECALLED 2014 MODELS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. CONDENSER LINE BRACKET MOUNT DOES NOT ALLOW THE LINE TO FLEX, THUS MAKING CRACK IN CONDENSER. REPAIRED BY THE DEALER AT A COST OF $775.61.

  21. Exterior lighting, Apr 10, 2018

HEADLIGHTS ARE VERY DIM, HARD TO SEE AT NIGHT ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS RAINING. MUST USE FOG LAMPS AT ALL TIMES TO BE ABLE TO IMPROVE VISION. CONTACTED GM AND DEALER ABOUT ISSUE, HAVE CLAIM NUMBER. THEY SAY TRUCK IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY TO DO ANYTHING.

  22. Exterior lighting, Apr 4, 2018

NIGHT TIME VISION IS COMPROMISED DUE TO POOR HEADLIGHT ILLUMINATION, MOST NOTABLE IN AREAS OF LOW AMBIENT LIGHTING OR RAIN. THIS HAS BEEN PRESENT SINCE PURCHASED NEW. TRUCK HEADLIGHT BULBS WERE UPDATED UNDER GENERAL MOTORS SERVICE BULLETIN PIT5374B AT LOCAL GMC DEALER WHERE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. CHARGE FOR THIS UPDATE WAS $149.21. WHILE I DO NOT HOLD THE DEALER RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS CHARGE, I DO FEEL THE SUBSTANDARD LIGHTS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A MANDATORY SAFETY ISSUE AND DEALT WITH AS SUCH

  23. Exterior lighting, Apr 3, 2018

HEADLIGHT QUALITY HEADLIGHT QUALITY IS VERY POOR,SIDE LIGHTING AND DISTANCE LIGHTING ARE TERRIBLE. GM ISSUED A TSB BUT NO RECALL FOR PEOPLE WHO COMPLAINED ABOUT THE HEADLIGHTS.I PURCHASED AT 37K SO AM BEYOND THE 3YR/36K. I AM LOOKING INTO AFTER MARKET FIXES FOR THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED IN THE 2016 MODELS.

BOUGHT SET OF FOUR DYNAPRO HT P255 70R17 TIRES. HAD TO TAKE THEM IN FOR RE-BALANCING THREE TIMES DUE TO ROUGH BUMPY RIDE. THIRD RE-BALANCING WAS TO A DIFFERENT DEALER THAN THE ORIGINAL SELLER. HE SAID TIRES WERE BADLY "OUT OF ROUND". ORIGINAL DEALER REPLACED TIRES WITH MICHELIN. HAD TO HAVE THESE TIRES 'ROAD FORCE BALANCED' AND PROBLEM WAS SOLVED.

BRAKES LOOSE BOOST AT IDLE AFTER TOWING TRAILER. I TOWED A HEAVY TRAILER AND THEN DROPPED IT IN MY YARD. WHEN I WENT TO MOVE MY TRUCK DOWN MY DRIVEWAY AND INTO MY GARAGE I HAD NO BRAKE BOOST UNLESS I REVVED THE ENGINE.
