Recalls and investigations

  1. Engine and engine cooling, engine, hard parts internal/mechanicalApr 24, 2025

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine. The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Engine failure increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 18, 2025. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N252494000.

  2. Service brakes, hydraulic, brake fluid low warning, lampSep 12, 2024

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Escalade ESV vehicles. The electronic brake control module software may fail to display a warning light when a loss of brake fluid occurs. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."

Without a warning light, the vehicle may be driven with low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.

The Electronic Brake Control Module (eBCM) software will be updated through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 25, 2024. Owners can contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N242447990.

  3. Exterior lighting, lighting control module, softwareDec 8, 2022

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Cadillac CT4 and CT5; 2021-2023 Buick Envision; and 2022-2023 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The daytime running lights (DRLs) may not deactivate when the headlights are on. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

DRLs that do not deactivate as intended may result in a glare, reducing visibility, and increasing the risk of a crash.

The body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2023. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is N222386380. 1. Engine, Jul 2, 2026

While driving vehicle on state highway exit at approximately 55 mph a knocking noise started coming from engine then engine just died and would not restart. Engine was replaced under recall.

  2. Service brakes, Jul 1, 2026

Failure to release parking brake. Lining material improperly bonding to steel shoe from Manufacturer. Service Parking Brake warning Indicator “on”

  3. Structure, Jul 1, 2026

The front grille/hood trim flew off driving down the highway. No, it is not available the cheap plastic shattered. My safety was put at risk b/c parts are flying off the truck that should never. More importantly other people's safety is put at risk b/c a long SHARP plastic piece is flying off a large truck driving down the highway!! Yes, Glenn Polk has seen the damage and can confirm. No, no one else has inspected it yet but you gladly can, it doesn't take a genius to see that the cheap POS plastic was terrible engineering by GM. There were no warnings or indications that the piece was even loose.

  4. Electrical system, Engine, Jun 29, 2026

Traveling had an engine light come on. stopped at a dealer they inspected found multiple errors reset engine light and said continue home. when home bring into my dealer. Got home that night went to start truck, all kinds of errors started popping up on the dash, vehicle would not turn over at all. Had to call wrecker to have brought into shop. First issue could not put the truck into neutral at all, so they had to pull in park to put unto the bed of wrecker (that seems to be a very poor design of the truck). Brought truck into shop received a call two days later that it is fixed and working fine. Went to the shop asked what the problem was, told there is a ground strap under the truck that is like the main part to make sure everything works regarding electronics. The dealer has had to repair many of these ground straps, they are exposed to the elements and come loose I was told. They had two other GMC trucks in the shop with the same issue that day. the ground strap is exposed to the elements do not understand why this would not be covered just like a battery lead to stop from corroding and have to clean it or replace it. Not to mention there is no where in the service manual I can find about any maintenance that needs to be done with it. Appears to be a very bad design from the car manufacture.

  5. Engine, Jun 29, 2026

Engine knocking. Engine being replaced under warranty due to premature bearing failure. Picotest was performed prior to my purchase with 12800 miles. 0w40 oil being used at the time of failure. At the dealer now getting the engine replaced.

  6. Structure, Jun 29, 2026

I was driving down the highway and the front Upper Grille Deflector flew off while at highway speeds. Due to the nature of being on a highly congested bridge, the grill piece flying off could've seriously injured not only myself, but other motorist around me. There is currently a GM recall (N242490120) out however, it only affects the 2022 model trucks. This makes no sense as this issue has been reported via threads and discussions on the internet for 2023 year models like mine numerous times. This is a serious issue and should be recalled just like the 2022 models. Not only am I now paying for a manufactuer defect out of pocket, but who's to say that the "new" part doesn't do the same thing and either I or another motorist is seriously injured or worse...killed.

  7. Power train, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Jun 26, 2026

While traveling at highway speed during rush hour commute, the vehicle lost engine power and stalled. While coasting, I tried to restart the engine several times without success. Before coming to a stop, I attempted to get to the shoulder safely. Unfortunately, a portion of the vehicle was left partially in the lane and on the shoulder. Once I was completely stopped, I tried to put the electronic shift control into neutral so I could push the vehicle safely to the shoulder. The shifter would not allow me to shift into neutral and other override methods researched failed to work. I continued to try and restart the vehicle without success. I was in an unsafe position during rush hour commute for about 50 minutes until roadside assistance arrived and loaded and towed the vehicle. There was no warning of the issue prior to the incident. A code (P129F-Fuel Pump Driver Control Module Speed Signal Incorrect) was produced after the stall occurred via my GMC app. My vehicle was towed to my local dealership for service, but have not received the vehicle back at the time of reporting.

I was driving down I-25 interstate and the sunroof exploded outward on the vehicle and sounded like i shot gun going off in the vehicle. I did experience a hard breaking situation due to the loud noise, no traffic accident from this situation. Called GMC service and warranty department and glass is only covered for 1 year.

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 MPH, the front grill deflector was ejected from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, and the contact was informed that the deflector needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V060000 (STRUCTURE). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 72,000.

  10. Structure, Jun 22, 2026

The front grill deflector sheared off of the truck when driving in the highway. The highway speed was 65 mph and the deflector flew out in to traffic. There was no warning or symptom prior to the problem or failure. This is a common ongoing issue with the same make/model of the previous year 2022 with an actual open recall unfortunately.

  11. Structure, Jun 22, 2026

The attachment points for the upper chrome grille deflector have fractured, causing the trim piece to detach completely while driving and fly over my windshield which startled me and made me swerve dangerously. This is a known recall for the truck year before me and should clearly affect my truck too since the same description happens here

[XXX] [XXX] Phone: [XXX] Vehicle Information: Year: 2023 Make: GMC Model: Sierra Denali Ultimate Engine: 6.2L V8 VIN: [XXX]: Mileage: Approximately 52,000 miles BACKGROUND: I previously had the engine serviced under a GM recall campaign related to known 6.2L V8 engine concerns. Despite that repair, the vehicle has since experienced two separate highway-speed loss-of-propulsion events. COMPLAINT The vehicle suddenly lost power while being driven at highway speed. No warning lights, check-engine lights, reduced-engine-power messages, or transmission warnings appeared. In both incidents, I was forced to coast to the shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle would not resume normal operation until it was stopped and restarted. This condition has now occurred twice. SAFETY CONCERN The sudden loss of propulsion during highway operation creates an immediate safety hazard and increases the risk of collision due to the inability to maintain speed with surrounding traffic. REQUESTED NHTSA ACTION 1. Record this complaint as a repeat loss-of-propulsion event. 2. Evaluate whether similar complaints exist involving 2023 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate vehicles equipped with the 6.2L V8. 3. Consider this complaint in any current or future investigations involving loss of propulsion, stalling, engine failure, or powertrain concerns. 4. Review whether vehicles previously repaired under GM recall campaigns continue to experience similar failures. [XXX]: Update – Vehicle Disabled and Awaiting Engine Replacement Since filing my initial concerns regarding repeated loss-of-propulsion events, the condition of my vehicle has significantly worsened. During the dealership's inspection and test drive, the engine reportedly failed and locked up. The vehicle could not be restarted and required further diagnostics. On June 20, 2026, I received a text message from the dealership that the required engine parts remain on backorder INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  13. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Jun 18, 2026

    1. The L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion failed and is available for inspection at the service department at Power Swain Chevrolet dealership, Fayetteville, NC. 2. I, other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians were at risk. That vehicle could have come down on the highway, causing a vehicle pileup, which could have caused mass casualties. 3. The problem is known; the service advisor informed me the vehicle's engine needed to be replaced. 4. There were absolutely zero warning lamps or My GMC app alerts to announce vehicle issues. I have attached the last two maintenance records I have on hand. I suspect the dealership will try to deny responsibility for repairs. An extended warranty most nearly means we expect it to break down and your safety is not our concern.

  14. Engine, Jun 15, 2026

Truck starting bottom end knocking noise at 57,700 miles. Engine had the recall done to it for Pico test and passed. Dealership states now it will need a new engine.

  15. Other or unspecified, Jun 14, 2026

While driving down the highway at night my front grill deflector broke off hitting my windshield and flying into the road. Thankfully there was no one behind me but it scared me quite a bit and could have caused me or someone else to crash

  16. Structure, Jun 14, 2026

It was the Chrome Grille Deflector and is available for inspection. I was driving down a long road at roughly 50 mph when all of a sudden the grille deflector detaches from my bumper and hits my windshield causing me to swerve thinking I had hit something. I was almost in an accident. I believe there is a recall for this exact thing but only for 2022 models not 2023. No it has not been inspected I tried to call GM to get guidance and see if it could possibly be covered seeing as it is a manufacture error but was denied. One small piece that has been recalled on other vehicles but mine is causing me to almost pay $900 dollars. I have yet to replace the part

  17. Structure, Jun 13, 2026

As I was driving down the highway the hood front molding flew off and took a chunck of paint off my GMC 2023 AT4, hitting a elderly ladies windshield we pulled over there was no damage to her car thankfully, she was very shakin and gave me an ear full. I have reached out to GMC even took it in and left it overnight and they say it is not under the recall and it will cost $1200.00 to fix. We currently own 3 GMC's, this one is mine (a woman) and she is my baby. I do not think it is fair that my truck matches the exactly damage you see on the trucks on the recall list, a service man also told me that they replaced one of them that was recalled and shortly after it to broke and flew off. If there is anything someone can do help, I know I am not the only one this is happening too. Thank you J

  18. Electrical system, Structure, Visibility/wiper, Jun 11, 2026

The plastic upper rail glass guide frame on the rear sliding window assembly of my 2023 GMC Sierra developed structural micro-cracks during normal vehicle operation. This manufacturing defect is a known issue tracked internally by the manufacturer under Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #18-NA-383.This structural failure allows severe water intrusion into the passenger cabin. The leaking water runs straight down the inside back wall of the cab, completely flooding and corroding sensitive, factory-installed electronic safety modules mounted directly beneath the leak path. This continuous water intrusion caused the catastrophic electrical failure and corrosion of the video processing control module located behind the rear seat. The sudden failure of this module completely disabled the rearview digital mirror camera and the 360-degree perimeter driver assistance cameras, creating immediate blind spots and an active driving safety hazard while operating the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected and repaired by an authorized dealership, confirming the rear window leak as the direct cause of the electronic destruction. The out-of-pocket cost to replace the water-damaged safety components was $2,747.00. Because the manufacturer refused to cover the replacement of the defective rear glass assembly, the structural leak remains unresolved. This active water intrusion continues to flood the cabin, creating a health hazard via mold growth and guaranteeing that the newly replaced safety cameras will inevitably short-circuit and fail again.

  19. Power train, Jun 9, 2026

the vehicle is actively presenting severe mechanical symptoms that make it entirely unsafe to operate on public roads. Specifically, it exhibits a violent shuddering and vibration through the cabin when coasting or cruising at highway speeds. Furthermore, it undergoes aggressive jerking, harsh engagement, and dangerous hesitation the moment I press the gas pedal to accelerate or merge.

  20. Engine, Jun 8, 2026

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 15 MPH, the vehicle stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was serviced, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to another dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. No further information was available. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.

  21. Power train, Jun 7, 2026

The transmission control module failed. The dealer said a I a high voltage alarm signal code. This was the diagnostic inform received from the dealership service department. Primary]: MDIAG : MISC. VEHICLE DIAGNOSIS. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND GETTING MESSAGE FOR SERVICE TRANSMISSION, UNABLE TO SHIFT. PLEASE CHECK AND ADVISE * Repair items per diagnosis: FOUND P07B4 STORED IN SYSTEM. VERIFIED WIRING OK TO GEAR SHIFT CONTROL MODULE. SI STATES IF WIRING GOOD TO REPLACE GEAR SHIFT CONTROL MODULE AND IF CODE RESETS TO REPLACE ECM. RECOMMEND STARTING BY REPLACING GEAR SHIFT CONTROL MODULE The truck would not shift or go into gear at all. This was concerning because the transmission could have stopped shifting while I was driving myself and my children around. This warning light came on while I was driving on the highway. My vehicle has about 58,000 miles on it and is still under powertrain warranty. But the dealership is saying this repair isn’t included.

  23. Power train, Jun 1, 2026

Upon accelerating on the freeway, rear wheels locked up completely almost causing me to hit multiple vehicles. Was repeatable and was able to record the event. Manufacturer claims unable to reproduce and bring back if it happens again. No lights were set.

Model: Sierra Denali Ultimate Engine: 6.2L V8 VIN: [XXX] Mileage at Most Recent Incident: Approximately 52,000 miles Safety Complaint Summary I am submitting this complaint to report a recurring loss-of-propulsion and engine power event involving my 2023 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate equipped with the 6.2L V8 engine. This vehicle has experienced two separate incidents in which it suddenly lost power while being operated at highway speeds. During both events, the vehicle unexpectedly lost propulsion without warning and without any apparent driver input or mechanical indication beforehand. No warning lights, check-engine lights, reduced-engine-power messages, service transmission messages, or other warning indicators were displayed prior to the failure. The vehicle simply lost power while traveling in traffic. During both occurrences, I was forced to safely maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder of the roadway while rapidly losing speed among surrounding traffic. Once stopped, the vehicle would not resume normal operation until it was restarted. After restarting, the vehicle appeared to operate normally; however, the fact that this condition has now occurred twice raises significant concerns regarding the reliability and safety of the vehicle. Safety Risk This condition presents a significant and immediate safety risk because sudden loss of propulsion during highway operation can leave the driver unable to maintain speed, safely merge, maneuver, or avoid surrounding traffic. The unexpected reduction in speed creates the potential for rear-end collisions, loss of vehicle control, or other traffic accidents, particularly when operating on high-speed roadways. Because the vehicle provided no warning before losing power, there is little opportunity for a driver to take preventive action. Additional Information • Vehicle: 2023 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate • Engine: 6.2L V8 • VIN: [XXX] • Approximate Mileage: 52,000 miles • Number of Incident INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The lifters on my 2023 GMC Sierra failed and damaged my engine. The truck has approx 78,000 miles. I do have an extended warranty to 100,000 miles. I got the truck to my GMC Dealer who confirmed the problem was lifter failure. There might be camshaft damage but will have to tear the engine down. It seems like GMC is dragging there feet. It is known the lifters are a problem on this engine but GMC continues to sell them. There was no warning that the lifters would fail. The lifters could have failed while driving at high speeds and the driver could loss control.
