Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiring, rear compartment/trunkPark outsideMay 11, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module may lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will relocate the power liftgate module and add a water shield. In addition, dealers will inspect for corrosion and replace the module and electrical connectors, if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner letters were mailed March 1, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 49A. This recall supersedes recalls 15V-393 and 15V-826. Vehicles repaired under the prior recalls will still need to have the new remedy performed.

  2. Power train, driveline, differential unitJun 11, 2020

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

  3. Power train, automatic transmissionJun 13, 2019

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.2L engines. In the event that a clutch becomes stuck in the transmission, the transmission software may shift the transmission to neutral.

An unexpected shift to neutral would result in a loss of drive, increasing the risk of crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the transmission software, free of charge. The recall began August 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is V69.

  4. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  5. EquipmentDec 21, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, and as a result, the transmission may unexpectedly shift to neutral. On August 29, 2016 Chrysler added the 2016 Fiat 500X vehicles to this recall.

If the vehicle unexpectedly shifts to neutral, there is an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module and the Transmission Control Module and if necessary replace the transaxle range sensor wire harness, free of charge. The recall began on November 7, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S55.

  9. Equipment, electrical, radio/tape deck/cd etc.Jul 23, 2015

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500, 2015 Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Dodge Challenger, 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, and Dodge Durango, and 2013-2015 Dodge Viper vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with radios that have software vulnerabilities that can allow third-party access to certain networked vehicle control systems.

Exploitation of the software vulnerability may result in unauthorized remote modification and control of certain vehicle systems, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify and mail affected owners a USB drive that includes a software update that eliminates the vulnerability, free of charge. Optionally, owners may download the update to their own USB drive from http://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/ or take their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for immediate installation. In an effort to mitigate the effects of this security vulnerability, Chrysler has had the wireless service provider close the open cellular connection to the vehicle that provided unauthorized access to the vehicle network. This measure may not have been implemented on all vehicles and does not address access by other means that will be remedied by the software update. The recall began on August 25, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R40.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 JEEP CHEROKEE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS UNDETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. 2. Power train, Service brakes, Sep 15, 2014

I WAS DRIVING ON A LOW TRAFFIC ROAD GOING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH WHEN THE PARKING BRAKE ERROR WARNING LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASH HUD AND THE GEAR SELECTOR D WAS FLASHING. ANOTHER WARNING APPEARED IN THE HUD THAT STATED "SERVICE TRANSMISSION", AS WELL AS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND STABILITY CONTROL WARNING LIGHT. AS THIS BEGAN I WAS ON A SLIGHT INCLINE AND BEGAN DRIFTING BACKWARD, LEADING ME TO BELIEVE THE ENGINE HAD DIED BUT I COULD STILL HEAR IT WAS ON SO I APPLIED MORE PRESSURE TO THE GAS PEDAL BUT COULDN'T MOVE FORWARD. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND AS I TURNED THE CAR BACK ON, ANOTHER WARNING APPEARED STATING THAT I SHOULD PUT IT IN PARK BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO SHIFT (I WAS IN PARK AT THE TIME) SO I WENT AHEAD AND SHIFTED TO DRIVE BUT THE ENTIRE CAR JERKED AND MADE A VERY LOUD THUD THAT SOUNDED AS IF I WAS SHIFTING INTO ANOTHER GEAR WHILE FLOORING THE GAS PEDAL. WHEN I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO GO FORWARD, I COULD BARELY MOVE EVEN THOUGH I WAS APPLYING FULL THROTTLE AND THE RPMS WERE REDLINED. I COULDN'T GO ANY FASTER THAN 15 MPH FOR THE REMAINDER OF MY TRIP (I ONLY HAD A MILE TO GO SINCE I WAS ALMOST HOME) AND THE RPMS STAYED REDLINED FOR ABOUT HALF THAT TIME BUT I WAS NEVER ABLE TO ACCELERATE OVER THAT 15 MPH FOR THE DURATION OF THE TRIP. WHEN I GOT TO MY DRIVEWAY, I PUT IT IN PARK AGAIN AND OPENED THE HOOD AND THE ENGINE WAS IDLING MUCH LOUDER THAN USUAL. *TR

  3. Power train, Sep 12, 2014

WHILE INCREASING VEHICLE TO HIGHWAY SPEED AND ATTEMPTING TO MERGE ONTO THE FREEWAY AT A SAFE 'HIGHWAY SPEED' THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY "POPPED" INTO NEUTRAL. I PLACED THE VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL MANUALLY THEN, BACK INTO A DRIVE GEAR TO CONTINUE. MOST COMMON OCCURENCES WITH THIS VEHICLE ARE THAT, IT WILL NOT 'UPSHIFT' PROPERLY AND, IT WILL HOLD ON TO THE LOWER GEAR FAR TOO LONG BEFORE SHIFTING TO THE NEXT GEAR. THIS PROBLEM ALSO PREVENTS THIS VEHICLE FROM DOING "ANY KIND OF COASTING", I ALWAYS HAVE TO HAVE MY FOOT ON THE GAS TO MAKE THE VEHICLE GO FORWARD, EVEN ON A GENTLE DOWNHILL INCLINE. SOME (MOST) OF THE TIME THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT UNLESS THE ENGINE REVS TO ABOUT 5,000 RPM. THIS VEHICLE HAS YET TO REACH IT'S EPA EST MILEAGE OF 27 MPG, HIGHWAY OR STREET. MY AVERAGE MPG IS 13 MPG EVEN THOUGH I AM A CONSERVATIVE DRIVER. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW FOR MY DAUGHTER WHO HAS YET TO DRIVE IT CONSISTENTLY DO TO IT'S SAFETY ISSUES. THE 'CHECK ENGINE LIGHT' HAS BEEN ON DUE TO THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AND THE DEALER HAS HAD THE VEHICLE FOR 50% OF THE TIME SINCE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE YET TO SEE THIS VEHICLE GO INTO THE 8TH OR, 9TH GEAR. THIS VEHICLE HAD 229 MILES WHEN IT WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER FOR SERVICE AFTER OWNING IT FOR 10 DAYS. I PURCHASED IT ON 8/22/14. *TR

I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR A BRAKE BOOSTER IN MAY OF THIS YEAR. I CONTACT MY DEALER AT CHAMPION DODGE, 9655 FIRESTONE BLVD, DOWNEY, CA 90241, (562) 231-3500 AND WAS TOLD THAT I SHOULD CALL BACK AT THE END OF JUNE BECAUSE THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY BRAKE BOOSTER IN. IT WAS STATED THAT JEEP WAS SLOW IN SENDING OUT THE PARTS AND SO THEY DIDN'T HAVE A TIME FRAME AS TO WHEN THEY WOULD GET THE PART. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT NO OTHER DEALER WOULD HAVE THE PART BECAUSE IT WAS THE SAME SITUATION FOR ALL DEALERS. AT THE END OF JUNE I CONTACTED THE COMPANY AGAIN AND WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE MY CAR BROUGHT IN FIRST. THIS WAS NOT TOLD TO ME ORIGINALLY AND SO MORE TIME WAS WASTED AS I NEEDED TO TAKE THE CAR IN FOR THEM TO DETERMINE THAT IT WAS IN FACT THE BRAKE BOOSTER. I TOOK MY CAR IN THAT WEEK AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND MY NAME WOULD BE PUT ON A LIST. IN JULY I CALLED AND ASKED ABOUT THE BRAKE BOOSTER SHIPMENT AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD A LONG LIST AND DIDN'T SEE MY NAME ON THE LIST. SO NOW I AM STILL WAITING. I RECEIVED ANOTHER RECALL NOTICE NOW FOR THE SUN VISOR VANITY LAMP. SINCE HAVING THIS CAR I HAVE RECEIVED 3 RECALLS WHICH I HAVE NEVER HAD BEFORE WITH ANY OTHER CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. I WILL NOT BE BUYING A JEEP AGAIN. PLEASE ASSIST ME IN EITHER CANCELING OUT THIS LEASE OR HAVING THESE RECALLS FIXED. I HAVE ALSO ALREADY EXPERIENCED THE BRAKES BEING PUT ON BY ITSELF WHILE DRIVING MY VEHICLE AND IT FLASHES "BRAKE" ON THE DASHBOARD. THANK YOU. *TR

TOOK CAR IN APRIL FOR STEERING WHEEL NOISE, AND THERE WAS A SLIGHT WOBBLE THEN WHEN COMING OUT OF A TURN THEN. THIS BECAME MORE NOTICEABLE AS THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN. TOOK IT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP THE WEEK OF JULY 21, 2014. AT THAT TIME NEW FRONT AXLES WERE ORDERED. TOOK THE VEHICLE IN ON AUGUST 14, 2014 FOR REPLACEMENT OF FRONT AXLES. AFTER REPLACEMENT THE CONCERN WAS WORSE. THEY REMOVED AXLES FROM A LOT VEHICLE AND SWAPPED OUT. THE CONCERN(WOBBLE) IS STILL THERE. IN FACT IT PRETTY MUCH HAPPENS ALL THE TIME NOW WHEN COMING OUT OF A TURN. A STAR CASE WAS OPENED WITH CHRYSLER. RECEIVED A CALL TODAY,(SEPTEMBER 4,2014) FROM THE SERVICE MANAGER AND I WAS TOLD THAT CHRYSLER ENGINEERS WERE WORKING ON A FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT NOT TO EXPECT A FIX/REPAIR FOR THIS FOR 3-4 MONTHS AND THAT THEY DID NOT THINK THERE WAS A SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE VEHICLE. HOW CAN THEY BE SURE THAT THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE IF THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM AND DO NOT HAVE A SOLUTION FOR THIS. THIS IS A FULL TIME ALL WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE AND IF THE WHEELS ARE NOT IN SYNC HOW DO WE KNOW THIS WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM WHEN WE ARE ON SNOW COVERED/SLIPPERY ROADS. BECAUSE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN MARCH 2014, IT HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN ON SNOW COVERED/SLIPPERY ROADS. *TR

THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE THAT SHOWS ON YOUR WEBSITE WAS DATED 5/14/14. I WAS NOT NOTIFIED BY CHRYSLER UNTIL JULY 2014 OF THE RECALL. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER AS IT INDICATES THERE IS A BRAKE BOOSTER SAFETY ISSUE. THE DEALER ORDERED PARTS JULY 30, 2014 AND AS OF TODAY ARE SAYING THEY STILL CANNOT GET PARTS FROM CHRYSLER AND THEY DON'T HAVE ANY ETA ON WHEN THEY WILL HAVE THE PARTS. WHEN STARTING VEHICLE FROM A STOP (NOT INITIAL START UP), THE JEEP HAS A TENANCY TO LOOSE POWER AND BECOMES UNRESPONSIVE FROM THE GAS PEDDLE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, I HAVE TO JUST LET OFF THE GAS AND THEN GIVE IT 2-3 SECONDS BEFORE BEING ABLE TO HAVE ACCELERATION POWER. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I HAVE TO GIVE MUCH MORE ROOM WHEN TURNING. ALONG WITH THIS ISSUE, I HAVE A ISSUE WITH POWER WHEN DRIVING (AGAIN AFTER STOPPING, NEVER INITIAL START AND DRIVE) WHERE THE ENGINE REVS HIGH, EVEN WHEN I LET OFF THE GAS, AND IT DOES NOT INCREASE SPEED, AND LOOSES SPEED AND POWER. I DO THE SAME THING WHERE I LET OFF THE GAS FOR A FEW SECONDS TILL THE RPM DROPS AND THEN CAN RESUME DRIVING AGAIN. *TR

WE WERE NEARLY T-BONED ON THE SIDE WHERE MY 4 YR OLD CHILD WAS SEATED. THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION MESSAGE LIGHT CAME ON AND CAR BECAME INOPERABLE! IT HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP HAD TO COMPLETELY REPLACE TRANSMISSION. THEY OUTRIGHT LIED AND DENIED ANY KNOWLEDGE OF TRANSMISSION ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE. IN CONJUNCTION, THEY COULD AND DID NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE NEW TRANSMISSION AND IF IT WAS ANY DIFFERENT THAN THE ONE THAT FAILED. TO TOP IT OFF MY CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME WITH SEVERAL NEW SCRATCHES, AN EXTRA PART LEFT UNDER THE HOOD, AND A BROKEN HOOD LATCH. I DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME ON A HIGHWAY IN THIS CONDITION AND THANK GOODNESS THE HOOD DID NOT FLY OPEN. THIS ISSUE WITH THE TRANSMISSION IS DEADLY! FRONT END AXLE BOOT LEAK AND SUBSEQUENT SHAKE/VIBRATION IN FRONT END ON ACCELERATION AND RIGHT TURNS MOSTLY. WENT INTO "LIMP MODE" UPON DRIVING DURING LOW SPEEDS ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION WITH CHECK ENGINE AND SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHTS COMING ON. NO GOOD COMPUTER HISTORY STORED IN ENGINE COMPUTER TO DETERMINE PROBLEM EVEN HAPPENED. SHAKE HAS CONTINUED EVEN WITH REPLACEMENT OF BOTH FRONT AXLES. LIMP MODE AND WARNING LIGHTS HAVEN'T HAPPENED SINCE TRANSMISSION WIRING HARNESS AND TRANSMISSION COMPUTER WERE REPLACED . HAS BEEN SERVICED BY TWO LOCAL DEALERSHIPS FOR OVER A MONTH AND HAVE HAD CUSTOMER SERVICE CONTACT WITH CHRYSLER/JEEP CUSTOMER SERVICE ABOUT ISSUES SINCE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. ENGAGED IN LEMON LAW ACTION BECAUSE PURCHASE DEALER HAS STATED ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION THAT THE SHAKE IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE 2014 MODEL OF JEEP CHEROKEE, "ALL OF THEM HAVE IT ON THEIR LOT" SO THERE IS NOTHING TO FIX. I JUST DON'T WANT THIS TO BE A LARGER ISSUE WITH MORE VEHICLES INVOLVED SO I AM REPORTING MY PROBLEMS. *TR

VEHICLE WAS HAVING SEVERE ISSUES SHIFTING GEARS. TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, LESS THAN A MILE LATER THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON. VEHICLE THEN LOST 4WD CAPABILITY. VEHICLE SEEMED TO STALL OUT AND MAX OUT AT 20 MPH. CAR STOPPED A FEW BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE WHILE IN A TURNING LANE. TURNED THE CAR OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON, WAS ABLE TO BARELY MAKE IT HOME. LUCKILY, IT WAS LATE NIGHT AND NO TRAFFIC. COULD'VE CAUSE A BIG ACCIDENT. THE VEHICLE SITS HERE AT THE HOUSE RIGHT NOW BECAUSE IT WILL NOT RUN. CALLING THE DEALERSHIP WHEN THEY OPEN TOMORROW TO TRY AND FIND A RESOLUTION. *TR

  23. Service brakes, Aug 24, 2014

WENT IN TO STATELINE FOR A BRAKE BOOSTER RECALL AFTER RECEIVING A LETTER STATING THE PART WAS IN. AFTER SITTING FOR AN HOUR, I WAS THEN TOLD I DID NOT HAVE A PART THERE AND I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT FOR A LETTER. ANOTHER WORDS THE DEALERSHIP GAVE MY PART AWAY AND A 2ND LETTER HAS NEVER COME IN THE MAIL. THE BRAKE BOOSTER HAS NEVER BEEN FIXED. *TR

  24. Power train, Electrical system, Engine, Aug 23, 2014

I WENT TO SHIFT VEHICLE INTO DRIVE, VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO ANY GEAR. TURNED THE VEHICLE ON AND OFF THREE TIMES, ON THE THIRD ATTEMPT I MANAGED TO GET IN TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE. VEHICLES TRANSMISSION SERVICE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS CAME ON STATING "SERVICE TRANSMISSION START FROM PARK WITH VEHICLE AT ZERO SPEED." WHEN I HAD SHIFTED THROUGH TO DRIVE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE THE TRANSMISSION MADE A CLUNKING SOUND LIKE IT HAD FALLEN OUT OF THE JEEP. I DROVE IT 3 MILES TO MY HOUSE ONLY GOING 30 MPH. WHEN I GOT HOME I ATTEMPTED TO PUT THE VEHICLE INTO PARK AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT MOVE PAST NEUTRAL. I ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE KEY 4-5 TIMES AND BECAUSE OF THIS THE DASH LIGHTS HAD STAYED ON. I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY. *TR

  25. Air bags, Aug 20, 2014

SERVICE AIRBAG LIGHT WILL PERIODICALLY GO ON AND OFF. CONTACTED DEALER WHO REPLACED SENSORS IN BOTH PASSENGER AND DRIVER SIDE SEATBELTS BUT THIS DID NOT FIX ISSUE. DEALER NOW WILL BE REMOVING SEATS TO TRACE WIRES FOR SYSTEM TO LOOK FOR LOOSE CONNECTIONS. WHILE THE LIGHT IS ON THE DEALER HAS STATED THAT THE AIRBAGS MAY FAIL TO DEPLOY. *TR
