  18. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleOct 17, 2013

Chrysler Group, LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured January 8, 2013, through August 20, 2013. Due to a disruption of computer communications and loose alternator ground wires, the affected vehicles may experience random illumination of multiple instrument cluster warning lights, loss of cluster illumination and loss of anti-lock brake system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) function. Because of these conditions, the vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 101, "Controls and Displays," and No. 126, "Electronic Stability Control Systems."

A loss of ABS and ESC function reduces the driver's ability to control the vehicle. Drivers would not be warned of brake system failures or any other failures which would be illuminated on the dashboard display. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the ABS and instrument cluster module software and tighten the alternator ground wire, free of charge. The recall began on November 19, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N58.

Without properly functioning parking lamps these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."

Without parking lamps, the vehicle may not be as visible to other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the Central Body Controller software, free of charge. The recall BEGAN ON September 12, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N42.

I OWN A 2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE WITH ROUGHLY 50,000 MILES. THIS MORNING, I ENTERED MY CAR (WHICH HAD BEEN PARKED FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND HAD NOT BEEN USED), AND MY FRONT PASSENGER HEAD REST DEPLOYED. UPON INSPECTING THE HEAD REST, IT LOOKS AS IF THE MOLDED PLASTIC PIECE THAT HOLDS A SECURING/FASTENING PIN IN PLACE BROKE. I AM UNABLE TO RESET THE HEADREST DUE TO THE BROKEN/DEFECTIVE PIECE. I VISITED SEVERAL JEEP OWNER FORUMS, AND IT SEEMS AS IF THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE THAT HAPPENS TIME AND AGAIN. IT NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED. I WAS LUCKY NO ONE WAS SITTING IN THE SEAT WHEN THE HEAD REST DEPLOYED. I HOPE THE SAME THING DOES NOT HAPPEN TO THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEAD REST (PARTICULARLY, WHILE I'M DRIVING).

I RETURNED MY CAR TO THEM AND THIS TIME THEY CLAIMED THE SAME PROBLEM WAS AN ACTUATOR FOR $318.99. ONCE AGAIN; I GOT MY CAR BACK AND A/C IS STILL WORKING INTERMITTENTLY. THEY OBVIOUSLY DON'T KNOW HOW TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. FROM AN INTERNET SEARCH, I'VE FOUND OTHERS WHO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE WITH JEEP A GRAND CHEROKEE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A DEFECT WITH JEEP VEHICLES.

VEHICLE PUTS UP A SERVICE SHIFTER MESSAGE THEN PUTS UP A SERVICE TRANSMISSION MESSAGE. ALL POWER IN THE CAR IS DISABLED AND THE CAR INVOLUNTARILY SLAMS INTO A RANDOM GEAR, SOMETIMES 1ST, SOMETIMES 7TH, OTHER TIMES NEUTRAL. AFTER MANY FAILED ATTEMPTS FOR A FIX AT LOCAL DEALERSHIPS, I WAS DRIVING TO THE STORE ON FRIDAY, MARCH 6TH 2020. IM DRIVING GOING AROUND 45 MPH. THE POWER SUDDENLY CUTS OFF AND MY JEEP IS LOCKED IN NEUTRAL WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING. NO HEADLIGHTS OR HAZARDS WOULD WORK. I PUSH THE POWER BUTTON TURNING THE ENGINE OFF TRYING TO RESTART. NO POWER OTHER THAN INTERIOR LIGHTING. MIND YOU, I'M STRANDED ON A 4 LANE HIGHWAY IN THE RAIN AND SNOW IN THE DARK WITH NO HAZARDS. I HAD TO CALL 911 AND HAVE THEM BLOCK THE STREET SO I COULD PUSH THE CAR OFF THE ROAD INTO THE GRASS. ONCE AGAIN AT THE DEALER AND AFTER 6 DAYS THEY HAVEN'T ANY CLUE WHAT IS WRONG. THEY NEED A RECALL FOR WHATEVER IS GOING ON HERE. MY LIFE WAS IN SERIOUS DANGER BECAUSE OF A FAULTY PRODUCT.

NO ACCIDENT OR OTHER TO CAUSE THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM TO RELEASE. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION TO HAVE OCCUR UNEXPECTEDLY WHEN DRIVING 60 MPH. UPON EXAMINATION, I FOUND THE STRUCTURE THAT HOLDS THE SYSTEM TOGETHER, WHICH IS UNDER CONSTANT PRESSURE, WAS MADE OF PLASTIC. THE PLASTIC ARMS THAT HOLD A METAL RELEASE PIN, HAD FATIGUED OVER TIME AND SIMPLY BROKE, WHICH RELEASED THE HEAD RESTRAINT UNEXPECTEDLY. FURTHER, IT CANNNOT BE RESET. THE EGR COOLER FAILED, ALLOWING HOT COOLANT TO BE DIRECTED INTO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE HOT COOLANT CAUSED THE PREMATURE FAILURE OF INTERNAL MECHANICAL COMPONENTS IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND SEVER THERMAL DAMAGE TO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE INTAKE MANIFOLD, EGR COOLER, AND OTHER FUEL COMPONENTS WERE REPLACED AT OWNER'S EXPENSE. OTHER OWNERS EXPERIENCING THIS FAILURE HAVE ENCOUNTERED FIRES IN THE ENGINE BAY DUE TO THE EXCESSIVE HEAT APPLIED TO THE COMPOSITE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THIS FAILURE IS TYPICALLY UNDETECTED UNTIL A SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF COOLANT HAS OCCURRED, OR THE INTAKE MANIFOLD IS DAMAGED ENOUGH TO CAUSE A MALFUNCTION DETECTED BY THE COMPUTER. THE RAM 1500 MODEL THAT USES THIS ENGINE ALREADY HAS A RECALL FOR THE EGR COOLER. THIS RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO THE JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE MODELS AS WELL.

WHILE DRIVING (MOTION) ON HIGHWAY 378 - LEXINGTON, SC - 2/14/20, THE PASSENGER SEAT POPPED OUT UNEXPECTEDLY, LUCKILY NO ONE WAS SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT AT THE TIME. I'M WORRIED THIS WILL HAPPEN WITH MY DRIVER'S HEAD SEAT AT THIS TIME. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO GET IT FIXED AND THEY SAID WOULD COST ME $700, SINCE MY WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED. I CALLED CHRYSLER/JEEP CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FILED A CLAIM FOR THEM TO WAIVE THE $700 FEE. THEY TOLD ME THAT SINCE I WAS THE (2ND) OWNER NOT THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND THAT MY WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED THEY DENIED MY CLAIM. I TOLD THEM WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR THERE HAVE BEEN NO WRECKS RECORDED ON THE VEHICLE AT ALL, THIS WAS CRAZY TO ME, THAT THEY WOULDN'T FIX MY PASSENGER HEAD SEAT. I FILED THE CLAIM ON 2/28/20 @ 1-800-992-1997. I WAS AT THE CHRYSLER/JEEP DEALERSHIP LOCATED IN COLUMBIA, SC.
