Recalls and investigations

  1. Engine and engine coolingJun 8, 2023

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L Diesel engines. The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and cam shaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall.

An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 3, 2023. Some owner notification letters were mailed October 31, 2023. Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the HPFP, and inspect and replace, if necessary, additional fuel system components, free of charge. The computer/screen died disabling most of the essential controls/functions of the vehicle including: hands free calling, control of the temperature/air flow, park assist/safety options, security features. This issue also disabled the ability to control other functions such as the windshield wipers and drained the battery until it died. The battery had to be recharged and then after that any time I turned the car off I had to unplug the battery so that it wouldn’t be drained.

  3. Seats, Jun 1, 2023

  6. Seats, May 31, 2023

Drove over a bump in a parking lot and the front of the headrest "popped" out hitting the driver in the back of the head. Within two weeks of the incident the driver has experienced blurred vision, neck pain and headaches. Several visits to different physicians as well as MRI and CT scans. Neurologist suspects whiplash.

  7. Other or unspecified, May 31, 2023

Passenger headrest deployed with no accident just popped out

  8. Seats, May 30, 2023

    Head rest deployed while driving.

  9. Seats, May 29, 2023

Headrest deployed without being in accident. I was about to put my car in reverse when the incident happened. If I was driving and it happened it could have caused me to wreck.

  10. Engine, May 27, 2023

3.6L Pentastar engine is defective. In October 2020 (55,000 miles), there was a ticking noise coming from engine and reduced engine power. Fields Jeep Dodge Ram Chrysler replaced right intake camshaft and 6 lifters, rockers, and related gaskets. In April 2021, I noticed same ticking noise; brought back to dealership; dealership found "nothing wrong." In March 2022 (70,000 miles) I heard same ticking noise; brought to dealership; insisted something was wrong. SURPRISE! This time, ALL (12) ENGINE lifters/rockers/gaskets & camshafts replaced. Now, May 2023 (80,000 miles) there is, again, ticking in engine/loss of power; this time there is a noticeable bucking and surging when the engine is cold. There were no warning lights or messages on the dashboard to indicate impending engine failure. Symptoms I experienced were loss of engine power, ticking, and bucking/surging. I WISH someone from NHSTA would come and inspect the car. Safety issues can arise if the engine fails while being driven - increased risk of stalling, loss of motive power, obviously collision, any number of things. On two separate occasions, Jeep dealership identified and "fixed" the issue with the same faulty parts that caused the problem in the first place. Other than the dealership, no one else has inspected the vehicle. This issue is ongoing and will continue to occur as a result of an inherently faulty engine design, for which the only remedy is to fix it with the same defective parts.

The adaptive headrest deployed while I was driving. The clips broke and it is not able to be put back.

  13. Seats, May 21, 2023

The headrest on the driver's side seat just spontaneously deployed and sprang forward. Thankfully it didn't cause an accident but now the headrest will not go back into position because the clips are busted. No warning of any kind and no reason to think it was faulty but apparently the clips are faulty because they busted causing the headrest to spring forward unexpectedly.

  14. Electrical system, May 21, 2023

  17. Engine, May 10, 2023, fire

The oil cooler is leaking and shooting oil around the engine compartment making a lot of smoke. Not sure if there was fire or not. I went to the 2 repair shops and both said that they are inundated with the same problem from jeep owners and the parts are very expensive and hard to get. I was told not to drive the car because it could cause a fire, and I cannot afford the repair. The Chrysler corporation should take responsibility. This is a major safety issue, and now I am stuck with a vehicle that is too dangerous to drive.

  18. Seats, May 5, 2023

I was driving down the road and my head rest popped open on my passenger side

  19. Other or unspecified, May 4, 2023

I put my car in park and ran in my house to grab my wallet. When I came back out, my Jeep had rolled down the driveway. The Jeep would crank but wouldn't move and there was a warning that said "service shifter." I had it towed to the Jeep dealership where I spent over $3,000 to have it repaired. There was a previous recall on Jeeps because they could roll away when people thought they were in park, however this issue wasn't covered by that recall. No vehicle should just roll away like that. The safety of others was put at risk because my neighbors kids were actually riding their bikes in the road at the time this happened. Had one of them been hit or killed, I would have been liable for that. There is a serious issue with Jeeps that needs to be corrected.

VIN tool confirms parts not available.

  21. Engine, May 2, 2023, crash

On April 24, 2023, while driving 53 mph down a busy highway the car just lost all power. I wasn’t able to control the vehicle then I stepped on the brakes but only if the back brakes worked. Which caused the vehicle to spin out of control until I eventually flipped the vehicle upside down into a ditch. It was one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced. Besides the fact my drivers side head rest and seat bell we’re also broken at the time. I was going to the dealership on April 26th to have both the headrest and seat belt fixed. It’s also the second time the car lost power. In addition to that my headlights, rear lights, & windshield wipers, would suddenly stop working then work again. I totaled my Jeep and I’m now out of a vehicle since I had a active loan of the vehicle. I was suppose to be done with my payments in Aug of 2025. I don’t ever want anyone to experience what I went thru. I’m very very grateful and fortunate that I wasn’t seriously injured or killed because of this problem.

  22. Suspension, Other or unspecified, Service brakes, May 2, 2023

My jeep has started experiencing rough driving and the gears slipping. I took it for service and they told me all the issues wrong were under a recall. (NHTSA 23-E-019) equipment safety recall 21A. He indicated: uplift timing, torque converter engagement, shift points, calibration issues, downshifts and other things. I called my local dealer and gave them my vin but they stated my vehicle has not been recalled and they won't fix it. The big concern is the slipping gears. It lungs forward at times and I am scared it is going to cause an accident. It is very rough to drive. The service 4 wheel drive system light came on. It started 4/27/23. It is very bad when turning the vehicle and driving slow.

The contact steered the vehicle off the road before the vehicle stalled. The contact made several attempts to restart the vehicle; however, after each attempt the vehicle started and then immediately stalled. The contact stated that the low oil pressure warning light illuminated each time. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer; however, the dealer did not have the part to perform the repair, and the contact was placed on a waiting list. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
