  2. Electrical system, Aug 15, 2023

On vacation 07/29/2023 towing a 4000lb. camping trailer with family in the mountains with weekend traffic when motor dies without warning. Luckily I was able to pull over safely. Was able to restart but died three more times but made it to a gas station where it died completely. We were very very fortunate no one was injured. No local shops open on weekend so had the whole rig towed 137mi. home. On Monday 07/31/2023 I had the truck towed to the dealer where I purchased the truck new. after a week and a half they said the wiring harness needs to be replaced but is no longer available so there is nothing they can do. Massive safety hazard should have a solution. I just learned that Dodge knows about this truck dying without warning but has done nothing.

  3. Steering, Aug 14, 2023

The power steering in my 2016 ram pick up truck has started to go intermittently on and off. Sometimes it feels like it’s catching on some thing when it goes out and then it comes right back on. Other times it is completely inoperable. This occurs for a couple days at a time and then the power steering will work for a period of 1 to 2 weeks before acting up again. I have also noticed a squeaking sound when turning the wheel to the right every now and then. I did take the truck in to the dealership however, on the day that I did, the power steering was working correctly, therefore, they were unable to diagnose anything. They stated that the power steering was working as it should. because of how random the power steering goes out, it is near impossible for me to get it to the dealership in time for them to properly diagnose. I did notice that your organization has opened an investigation into an issue at sounds very similar to the one that I’m having. because of how random the power steering goes out, it is near impossible for me to get it to the dealership in time for them to properly diagnose. 9. Engine, Aug 10, 2023

I bought a 2016 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel brand new from a Dodge, Ram, Jeep dealership. November 2021 I taking my son, who was 11 years old at the time, to a friends house. The route to the friend's house was through a farm area and the roads were hilly with moderate traffic. I remember driving down one of the hills and starting hearing an odd sound coming from the engine. The sound was sort of like a light thud or rocking sound. It started off quiet and soft at first but start getting louder and louder. We weren't very far from our destination so we continued on. We came to a stop at a stop sign at an intersection then proceeded through it when traffic was clear. We got up to about 35 MPH and the sound from the engine became extremely loud then all of the sudden the engine seized/shut off and all the electronic shut down. The power steering and power brakes were not receiving and any power so it became really hard to control the vehicle. I struggled to turn the steering wheel to the side of the narrow county road and was eventually able to stop the vehicle. I tried to restart the vehicle multiple times and each time was unsuccessful. Since the vehicle would not start, I had to order a tow truck to tow the vehicle to the dealership. The dealership looked at my truck and told me the crankshaft failed and they metal from the crank in my oil pan. When they told me this I started doing research to see if anybody else had this problem. I found a recall for 2014-2018 Ram ecodiesel trucks (W58/NHTSA 20V-475) that came out in February 2021. I brought this up the the service tech at the dealership and said it didn't matter me since my VIN was not included in the recall. Service tech recommended engine gets replaced since the metal found in the oil pan broke off from the crankshaft and traveled through the engine. The truck was towed back to my residence and has yet to be repaired. 6/8/23 - FCA Recall #66A/NHTSA Recall #23V-411 announced and my VIN is included.

  10. Steering, Aug 10, 2023

The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 MPH, the steering wheel became stiff. The vehicle was driven to the residence and parked. The power steering warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 76,000.

  11. Steering, Aug 10, 2023

Power steering failed intermittently several times while driving . I've been told the electronic steering rack failed and needs replaced but the garage is still trying to find the proper rack so repairs haven't been made yet .

  12. Suspension, Aug 9, 2023

The component that failed was the air ride suspension. When outside air temperature drooped to 0° then the air ride suspension lowered to the bottom and would not inflate. With this the wheels are out of alignment, tires scrape on fenders when turning and there is no suspension, spring action. I had the truck taken to the Ram repair center, they reset the computer and kept the truck in a warm shop until suspension continued to work. The following week when outside air temperature dropped to 0° the same thing happened. Every year truck suspension goes out. No warning. Where I live the outside air temperature below 0° is common in the winter and can last over a week at a time.

  13. Engine, Aug 9, 2023

The engine failed while driving, resulting in the engine shutting off and being unable to be restarted. I was driving at the time of the incident, which could have cause Greta danger to myself, my children, and other drivers. The engine has been inspected by an independent repair shop. When the engine first shut down, a warning light came on.

  14. Steering, Aug 9, 2023

The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the vehicle was difficult to maneuver. The contact stated that the steering wheel was firm. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related it to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V167000 (Steering), but the VIN was not included. Upon further investigation, the contact became aware of NHTSA Action Number: RQ23003 (Steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure but was unable to assist. The failure mileage was 62,000.

  15. Service brakes, Air, Aug 9, 2023

The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the ABS warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the ABS module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the part for the repair was unavailable and needed to be manufactured. The contact was advised to call the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

  16. Steering, Aug 8, 2023

The electronic steering in this truck seemed to have malfunctioned in December 2022. The truck had approximately 60,000 miles on the odometer. It seems that the power steering is failing to assist with steering efforts, making it more difficult to safely steer the truck. The steering wheel does not return to center on its own, takes more effort to move the wheel, and at some degrees of the steering wheel, seems to not work at all. Sometimes the steering wheel seems to "skip" as well, depending on the position. It happened randomly but the only difference was after a big snow storm. The truck did not travel through deep snow but the roads were wet from clean up/salt. The only things that seem to maybe help are wiggling the plug on the ESC or getting a car wash - but then it still does not go back to normal, just seems like its getting a tad bit more power. But then it goes back to failing to assist. It is described just like the recall that is out there for these trucks, but my VIN does not fall under the recall, even though the symptoms are the exact same. The dealership and Ram Cares have been no help in this either. I have tried a few things including replacing the battery, fuses, steering components - everything rather than replacing the whole rack and ESC. Nothing seems to help.

  17. Steering, Aug 8, 2023

I lost my power steering 8/22. I drove a while without it. The steering did not freeze up. I had to wait several months for the part to come in. A non-dealer mechanic repaired the steering. I am reporting this after reading about others who had the same problem.

  18. Steering, Aug 8, 2023, crash

The Traction control flashed immediately before the wreck so my assumption is there was a traction lock malfunction. The road was wet due to rain. My husband was driving 55 mph when the truck's steering locked and we ended up in the right side ditch where we hit an electric power pole. My husband had several fractured ribs.
