Recalls and investigations

  1. Seats, front assembly, seat heater/coolerJun 2, 2016

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2005-2011 4Runner, Highlander, Sequoia, and Sienna, 2005-2010 Avalon and Tundra, 2006-2008 Camry Solara, 2006-2010 Highlander hybrid, 2006-2011 Rav4 and Tacoma, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2007-2011 Camry hybrid, 2009-2010 Venza, 2010-2012 Prius, 1988-1990 and 2005-2010 Camry, and 1989 and 2009-2010 Corolla vehicles equipped with aftermarket accessory seat heaters with a copper strand heating element. The electrical wiring in the seat heaters may be damaged when the seat cushion is compressed.

If damaged, the copper strand heating element may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.

SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the seat heaters, free of charge, and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory. The recall began on July 14, 2016. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET number for this recall is SET16B.

  2. Seats, front assembly, seat heater/coolerNov 19, 2014

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Prius and Corolla, 2009-2011 Venza, 2006-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 FJ Cruiser, 2005-2011 Sienna and Sequoia, 2006-2011 Tacoma 4x2 and 4x4, Camry, Highlander, Tundra 4x2 and 4x4, and 2007-2011 Rav4 and 4Runner. The affected vehicles may experience compression of the seat cushion which may damage the seat heater wiring.

Damage to the seat heater wiring could cause the wires to short, increasing the risk of the seat burning and causing personal injury to the occupant.

SET will notify owners, and dealers will disconnect the heaters with copper strand heating elements and refund the purchase price of the seat heater accessory, free of charge. The recall is expected to began in January 2015. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.

  3. Suspension, rear, springs, leaf spring assembly, leafSep 29, 2014

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner and 4x4 vehicles manufactured September 14, 2009, to October 11, 2010. In the affected vehicles, one of the leaf springs may fracture due to stress or corrosion. While being driven, the broken leaf could move out of position and contact surrounding components including the fuel tank, possibly puncturing the tank and causing a fuel leak.

If the fuel tank leaks fuel from being punctured, there is an increased risk of a fire.

Toyota will notify owners and dealers will install new rear leaf spring assemblies. The recall began on January 29, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

  4. Seat beltsAug 7, 2013

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Tacoma Access Cab vehicles manufactured September 14, 2004, through March 29, 2010; and model year 2011 Tacoma Access Cab vehicles manufactured July 1, 2010, through September 7, 2011. If the access doors are repeatedly and forcefully closed, the screws that attach the seat belt pre-tensioner to the seat belt retractor can loosen over time. If the screws loosen completely, the seat belt pre-tensioner and the retractor spring cover could detach from the seat belt retractor.

If the seat belt pre-tensioner detaches from the seat belt assembly, the seat belt pre-tensioner will not perform as designed, increasing the risk of injury in a severe crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat belt assemblies. Based on the inspection, the seat belt assembly will be replaced or new pre-tensioner screws will be installed with thread-locking sealant and a retractor spring cover with stopper ribs to prevent loosening of the screws. These services will be provided at no cost to the owner. The recall began during February 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

  8. Vehicle speed control, accelerator pedalOct 5, 2009

TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.

A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. 10. Air bagsApr 3, 2006

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, DUE TO IMPROPER ASSEMBLY OF THE AIR BAG INFLATOR, WHICH IS USED IN THE SIDE AIR BAG, THE CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAG, AND THE KNEE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY, SOME INFLATORS WERE PRODUCED WITH AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF THE HEATING AGENTS NECESSARY FOR PROPER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. IN THIS CONDITION, THE EXPANSION FORCE OF THE GAS MAY BE INSUFFICIENT TO PROPERLY INFLATE THE AIR BAG WHEN THE SRS SYSTEM IS ACTIVATED DURING A CRASH.

THIS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT IN THE INVOLVED SEATING POSITION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.

  1. Wheels, Sep 22, 2022

I was driving my Toyota Tacoma and all of the sudden, without any warning I felt an abrupt bump which caused the bed of the truck to jump a foot in the air. Looking in my mirrors to find out what happened I saw a tire rolling beside my truck past me into the other lane. Thankfully there were no cars approaching. I pulled over and examined my vehicle. I saw my spare was not there. I found the wheel now laying in the middle of the street and realized this was my spare tire that came off. In the street near where the bump occurred I found the spare retention part and a metal part with frayed wires. I put the spare tire and parts in the truck and called the Toyota Corperate and told them what happened. I was informed that my vehicle was not subject to a recall for the spare tire retention system. They informed me that I would need to take it to the dealer for inspection. My tacoma is at the dealer with the parts. They are covering the costs of the repair now after initally telling me I would have to pay to repair it. The spare tire coming off during motion put me, my family and other motorists in danger. I was on my way to fill up my truck for a camping trip where we pull a trailer. I can only imagine what would happen if the wheel came off while I was towing my trailer. Would it cause my trailer to flip over, causing an accident, injury or even death of my family or others?

  2. Other or unspecified, Sep 18, 2022

My 2006 Toyota Tacoma Chassis has Rust issues. At my last Oil Change my Mechanic recommended I go to My Toyota Dealer with The Problem. A few years back I was under The Truck and noticed it as well. I notified Crestmont Toyota in Pompton Plains NJ about it. They assured me it was inspected and during The Recall and was found to be safe and without issues. After going back and forth with them [the recall is over] I called Toyota Corporate about my issue. They basically said the same thing. I even went as far as to put my truck an a Lift and paint the chassis with POR-15 Rust Preventative Coating. I see some areas on the chassis around where the Shock Absorbers are welded to the Chassis where I couldn't get to. Is there anyone that could help me in my dilemma? I only have around 100,000 miles on this 17 year old truck. I bought it 7 years ago used from Crestmont Toyota with 52,000 miles on it.I'm retired since 10/2015 and thought it would be my last Vehicle I would need to purchase. Thank You Thomas J. 1. Frame was replaced under recall due to excessive corrosion, and now it's corroding again and should be replaced. also the trailer hitch is excessively corroded and was not replaced during the recall. I pull trailers all the time with this truck and don't want there to be failure with the hitch due to excessive corrosion. 2. The body paint and clear coat on this vehicle is weak and needs constant attention, and the body material turns to rust right away. This subject needs attention.

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that after getting an inspection completed with both a certified mechanic and then the dealer, the contact was informed that the subframe was severely rusted and would prevent the vehicle from passing the inspection. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was no longer covered under warranty. The approximate failure mileage was 71,857.

  5. Structure, May 22, 2022

I recently bought this Tacoma used and just found out from my local mechanic that the frame is severely rusted and likely unsafe to drive. I immediately scheduled a frame inspection with Toyota. They confirmed that it was very unsafe to drive and gave me a quote of $14,711 to fix it. This is more than the value of the truck. Although Toyota acknowledged that there was a service campaign for rust issues on these trucks they said it had expired and there was nothing I could do.

  6. Structure, Other or unspecified, Feb 13, 2022

Never received recall on frame, why wasn't I sent a recall and why don't dealership notify me when leaf springs were replaced?

  7. Structure, Dec 2, 2021

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated while having the vehicle inspected by an independent mechanic, he was informed that there was severe corrosion to the sub-frame of the vehicle. Prior to the discovery, the contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer where the frame was sprayed with a rust inhibitor to prevent corrosion. Over the years, the contact had taken the vehicle back to the same dealer on multiple occasions to have the frame checked. On each visit, the contact was informed that the sub-frame was in good shape. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed him that the vehicle was out of warranty but offered no further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 109,000.

  8. Steering, Dec 2, 2021

The universal joint on the intermediate steering shaft corrodes and seizes causing a potential problem steering. It is a serious safety issue in my opinion. It is an on-going issue.

  9. Suspension, Structure, Nov 30, 2021

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that his father had taken the vehicle to a dealer to have NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V604000 (Suspension) serviced. Upon inspection, his father was informed that the recall could not be performed due to the extensive corrosion on the frame of the vehicle. He was also informed that the vehicle was unsafe to drive and was given an estimate of $16,000 for the repair. The manufacturer was then notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000.

  10. Air bags, Nov 22, 2021

My airbag warning light went off and the horn ceased functioning as well. The dealer charged me $170 to diagnose the problem as a broken spiral cable in the steering wheel. I asked about a recall for this part as there are plenty of other Toyota models with a recall for this same part. I was told that this particular VIN was not part of any campaign (yet). Are they actually different parts on the RAV4 and 4Runners or the same part?? There are plenty of documented failures and testimonials about the Tacoma issue but no recall??? Where does pressure need to come from to initiate one? Another $575 to fix it, what is a glaring safety issue.

  11. Structure, Nov 12, 2021

The mechanic noticed rust the frame was rusty so recommend I take it to a metal shop to get an estimate for re-welding the frame and they are hesitant to even work on it because of how corroded it is. The cab is almost detached from the frame and the support above the rear axle is about to snap in half.

  12. Suspension, Structure, Nov 3, 2021

My frame rusted and broke into where spring hanger bolts to the frame. They are saying n was recalled but time has ran out but I did not receive a recall notice as we moved to another area of the state ( Ashtabula) where we bought a shop for our oilfield business then we moved to ( Cambridge ) and are now renting our first home from my daughter who bought it in New Concord. Sad thing is we had it to repair shop and had new steering, power steering pump, new front axles and no one said hey you should look at this frame it is rotten and I have a picture I can send you if you'd like.So it is totally broke into and the spring hanger is not attached and pushed the bed up and the driver nearly wrecked and we had to haul it back on a trailer.

  13. Structure, Sep 1, 2021

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that upon inspection it was discovered that the entire subframe had sustained severe rust and corrosion damage. The cause of the failure was not determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who advised that the vehicle was too damaged to drive. The manufacturer was not yet notified. The failure mileage was 97,000. The VIN was invalid.

  14. Structure, Aug 25, 2021

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would drift and pull to the left. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the subframe had experienced severe rusting and corrosion damage and that the structural integrity of the vehicle had been compromised. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

  15. Structure, Aug 19, 2021

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that he was made aware that the sub frame of the vehicle was rusted badly when the vehicle was taken to the dealer for faulty brake lines. The dealer informed the contact that they could not perform the brake line repair due to the sub frame rust. The contact was informed that the sub frame needed to be replaced. The contact stated that another dealer Germain Toyota of Columbus (5711 Scarborough Blvd, Columbus, OH 43232) had sealed and plugged the frame which caused the frame to rust from water damage. The vehicle was later taken to an independent mechanic for the brake line repair and remained at the mechanic. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 220,000.

  16. Suspension, Jul 2, 2021

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V604000 (Suspension). The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The part was available for repair. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

  17. Other or unspecified, Jun 30, 2021

On June 26, 2021, I took my 2006 Toyota Tacoma to Bennett Toyota for regular maintenance. As part of the inspection, I was notified that the "Frame very rusted, perforation may begin on cab mounts in the next year" and the Service Advisor told me that my car would be unsafe to drive in a year or two. I told the Service Advisor that in 2015, I received a recall notice from Toyota regarding frame rust and took my 2006 Toyota Tacoma to Bennett Toyota to address the issue. On April 22, 2015, Bennett Toyota provided "Corrosion-Resistant Compound (CRC) Application; Remove Rust - Clean Frame - No Rust Perforation Found". Again on March 29, 2018, I requested that Bennett Toyota inspect the frame for corrosion perforation and was notified that "No Significant Perforation Found". The Service Advisor stated that the extended warranty had expired and there was nothing Bennett Toyota could do to address the rusted frame. I then called Toyota and opened case# 210628002014 to request the rusted frame be addressed/replaced/repaired and was told that the extended warranty had expired and there was nothing that Toyota would do to address the issue. I have a Toyota Tacoma with a known issue that is quickly becoming unsafe to drive and have no way to repair/replace the rusted frame.

  18. Structure, Jun 25, 2021

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that after the vehicle was taken in for maintenance, it was discovered that the vehicle had severe rusting and corrosion to the subframe and the recall repair for campaign number 14V604000 (Suspension) could not be performed. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 107,000.

  19. Structure, May 31, 2021

The frame of the car is rusted and deemed unsafe. Due to the rust of the frame the car could be unsupported and cause potential harm to the driver and others on the road. The problem has been identified by a dealer and manufacturer. There were no warnings on the car about this.

  20. Electrical system, May 17, 2021

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL NOT GO OFF. A TOYOTA INDEPENDENT SERVICE/REPAIR FACILITY CHECKED EVERYTHING AND SAID IT IS ELECTRICAL BOARD PROBLEM. I REC'D A SAFETY RECALL LETTER FROM TOYOTA STATING THERE IS A MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP CAUSING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO STAY ON. IT STATES I WILL RECEIVE A 2ND NOTIFICATION WHEN REMEDY IS AVAILABLE THAT I HAVE NOT REC'D. THEY WANT ME TO PAY THE DEALER (APPROX. 300-400 DOLLARS) THEN SEND DOCUMENTS OF REPAIR TO TOYOTA CORP FOR REIMBURSEMENT! I DO NOT HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY TO WAIT AND SEE IF I WILL BE REIMBURSED. WHY ARE THEY DRAGGING THEIR FEET NOT SENDING AN ACTUAL RECALL THAT THEY WILL PAY THEIR DEALERS AFTER THEY PERFORM THE WORK? WHY IS THIS RECALL NOT NOTED ABOVE. ARE THEY TRYING TO NOT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING? IN RED, THE LETTER STATES "THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL:" BUT THE TOYOTA DEALER "TEAM TOYOTA" KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT,SAID THEY COULD CHECK AND FIX, BUT WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT THEN MAYBE BE REIMBURSED BY TOYOTA BUT THEY COULDN'T SAY I WOULD BE. Driver side air bag is not operational. Horn doesn't work. There was a spiral cable assembly recall for the 2006 Toyota Tacoma as well as air bag recall. My Vin number was not included but my vehicle is affected. Will this be corrected by Toyota. My vehicle only has 125,000 miles.

  22. Suspension, Mar 30, 2021

BROKEN REAR LEAF SPRING ASSEMBLY: THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN KNOWN IN TOYOTAS SINCE THE FIRST GENERATION TACOMAS BUT WORSE IN THE SECOND GENERATION. THE LEAF SPRINGS AREN'T PROPERLY EQUIPPED TO HANDLE THE TOWING CAPACITY OUTLINED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL AND WILL CRACK, FLATTEN, OR BREAK UNDER TOO MUCH WEIGHT. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT IT NEEDED REPLACED ON 11/7/2016. TOYOTA ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE IN 2007 BY RELEASING A TSB STATING THAT THEY'D REPLACE THE SPRINGS ON ANY SECOND-GEN TACOMA STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I BOUGHT MINE IN 2006. REAR DIFFERENTIAL OIL LEAK. THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL IN THE 2016 TOYOTA TACOMA BUT MY 2006 HAS THE SAME PROBLEM STARTING YEARS AGO. I DID NOT KNOW IT WAS LEAKING UNTIL I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP.

  24. Suspension, Mar 24, 2021

THIS SHOULD BE A MANDATORY RECALL. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE LOOKED AT THAT WAY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THEIR FRAMES BROKEN IN HALF. THE WORST DAMAGE ON MINE IS DRIVER'S SIDE UP FRONT THERE IS ALSO RUST NEAR THE REAR MY TRUCK RECENTLY HAD REAR SPRINGS REPLACED ON A RECALL. THEY SHOULD HAVE NOTICED IT THEY SAID NOTHING ABOUT IT, THE FRONT TIRES HAVE BEEN REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP SHOULD HAVE BEEN EASY TO NOTICE THE DAMAGE AT FRONT DIDN'T MENTION IT. THANK YOU TONY BAGGETT.
