Recalls and investigations

  1. Electrical system, wiringMay 17, 2018

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  2. Electrical system, alternator/generator/regulatorNov 21, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014 Dodge Challenger, Charger, Durango, Chrysler 300, and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with a 3.6L engine and a 160 amp alternator. In the affected vehicles, the alternator may suddenly fail.

If the alternator fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the alternator, free of charge. The recall began December 15, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T75.

  3. Service brakesSep 18, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. The affected vehicles had brake booster shields installed under a previous campaign to prevent water from entering the brake booster and limiting braking ability. This recall is to verify that the brake booster shield installation was performed properly.

If the brake booster shield was not installed properly, the vehicle's braking ability may be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake booster shield, correcting the installation as necessary, free of charge. The recall began November10, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T59.

  4. Electrical system, alternator/generator/regulatorJul 10, 2017

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300, Dodge Durango, and 2012-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. The affected vehicles have electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) and are equipped with a 5.7L or a 3.6L engine and a 160, 180 or 220 amp alternator. In the affected vehicles, the alternator may suddenly fail.

If the alternator fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. There is also the possibility that the alternator may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the alternator and depending on the part number, will replace the alternator, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T36.

  5. Equipment, electrical, radio/tape deck/cd etc.Jul 23, 2015

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500, 2015 Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Dodge Challenger, 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, and Dodge Durango, and 2013-2015 Dodge Viper vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with radios that have software vulnerabilities that can allow third-party access to certain networked vehicle control systems.

Exploitation of the software vulnerability may result in unauthorized remote modification and control of certain vehicle systems, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify and mail affected owners a USB drive that includes a software update that eliminates the vulnerability, free of charge. Optionally, owners may download the update to their own USB drive from http://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/ or take their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for immediate installation. In an effort to mitigate the effects of this security vulnerability, Chrysler has had the wireless service provider close the open cellular connection to the vehicle that provided unauthorized access to the vehicle network. This measure may not have been implemented on all vehicles and does not address access by other means that will be remedied by the software update. The recall began on August 25, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R40.

  6. Seat beltsOct 14, 2014

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2014 Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured June 2, 2013, to June 28, 2014, and 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured October 30, 2012, to April 30, 2014. Due to a fault within the Occupant Restraint Control (OCR) module, the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags may be disabled. The malfunction indicator light “MIL” should illuminate to initially warn drivers of a failure.

If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates use of the passive restraint system.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ORC module, free of charge. The recall began on April 27, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P67.

When the adaptive cruise control is engaged and the driver presses the accelerator pedal to increase the vehicle's speed more than the cruise control system would on its own, the vehicle may continue to accelerate briefly after the accelerator pedal is released.

The unintended continued acceleration may increase the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will re-flash the Driver Assistance System Module (DASM), free of charge. The recall began in June 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P31.

  11. Service brakesApr 1, 2014

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles manufactured from January 5, 2010, through September 8, 2013. The subject vehicles have a brake booster with a center shell that may corrode and allow water to get inside.

The water inside could freeze and limit the braking ability of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will add a water diverter shield to the booster after the booster has been tested to confirm it can hold an acceptable amount of vacuum pressure. If the booster inspection confirms an unacceptable loss of vacuum pressure, the booster will be replaced. Repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began on May 30, 2014. THE REAR TAILLIGHT ON THE DECK LIGHT HAS ENCOUNTER WATER INTRUSION CAUSING THE LIGHTS TO FAIL AND NOT ILLUMINATE. ON THIS VEHICLE IT HAS OCCURRED A TOTAL OF FOUR (4) TIMES. EACH REPLACEMENT PART HAS FAILED. THIS SEEMS TO BE A RECURRING ISSUE WITH THE TAILLIGHT ASSEMBLY. DODGE IS NOT COVERING DUE TO VEHICLE AGE EVEN THOUGHT THIS IS RECURRING AND THE HAVE HAD TO THE REPLACE THE LIGHT ASSEMBLY FOUR TIMES. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT BUT IS BEING EXPERIENCED BY MANY OWNERS OF THIS PRODUCT LINE. DODGE IS NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY DUE TO THE VEHICLE AGE, HOWEVER THE FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE INDICATES A FAULTY PRODUCT ON THEIR BEHALF AND LEAVES THE VEHICLE WITHOUT THE REAR TAILLIGHT ASSEMBLY WORKING. FAILURE CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME WITH NO NOTICE, LEAVING THE VEHICLE VULNERABLE TO REAR END COLLISION.

THE RACETRACK TAILGATE LIGHT LEAKS AND A LARGE AMOUNT OF WATER GETS INSIDE AFTER ANYTIME ITS LEFT IN THE RAIN, OR AFTER A CAR WASH. THIS WILL BUILD UP AND CAUSE A SHORT. THIS ALSO FREEZES IN THE WINTER AND WILL EVENTUALLY CRACK THE ENTIRE EXPENSIVE TAILGATE LIGHT. THIS RACETRACK LIGHT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.

MY PASSENGER SIDE HEADREST BROKE AT THE PLASTIC CLIPS AND IS JUST HANGING THERE. WE JUST NOTICED WHEN WE GOT IN THE CAR TODAY... THANK GOODNESS NO ONE WAS RIDING IN THE SEAT. I'M NOW WORRIED ABOUT THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADREST "EXPLODING" WHILE WE'RE DRIVING.

  5. Seats, Aug 25, 2020

TRAVELING IN PARKING LOT LESS THAN 10MPH WHEN SUDDENLY THE PASSENGER HEADREST DEPLOYED WITH A LOUD BANG. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO ONE SITTING IN THE SEAT AT THE TIME, AS IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS INJURY. THERE WAS NOTHING THE CAUSED THE HEADREST TO DEPLOY. AFTER EXAMINATION, THE CHEAP PLASTIC PIECES HOLDING THE HEADREST IN IS PROPER PLACE WERE BROKEN. I AM NOW GREATLY CONCERN THIS WILL ALSO HAPPEN ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AND MAY CAUSE AN INJURY OR ACCIDENT. IT WAS CLEARLY A FAILURE OF A DEFECTIVE PART. SINE THAN I HAVE HEARD OF MANY SIMILAR INCIDENTS. THIS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD HAVE A RECALL FROM CHRYSLER/DODGE

  6. Seats, Aug 18, 2020

KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE ACTIVE HEAD RESTRAINT OF THE 2014 DODGE DURANGO. THE HEAD RESTRAINT IS KNOWN TO DEPLOY WITHOUT CAUSE, HITTING THE DRIVER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD. THIS JUST HAPPENED TWO DAYS AGO (8/16/2020) TO THE DRIVER SIDE HEAD RESTRAINT OF MY 2014 DODGE DURANGO CITADEL WITH 60,000 MILES. NOTHING PROVOKED THE MALFUNCTION, AS THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED.

  7. Seats, Aug 17, 2020

THE PASSENGER SEAT HEADREST POPPED ALL THE WAY OUT. THERE HAS BEEN NO WRECK, COLLISION, FORCE OF ANY KIND. THE CAR WAS IN PARK AT THE TIME. IT CAN NOT BE CLOSED.

WHILE TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE 80 MILES FROM HOME THE COOLANT LIGHT WENT OFF AND THE TEMP GAUGE RAN HOT. PULLED OVER AND COOLED DOWN; LIGHTS WENT OFF. PULLED UP INFO FOR A NEARBY DEALERSHIP AND TRIED TO DRIVE TO IT . ONLY GOT ABOUT A MILE AND LIGHTS AND GAUGE WENT OFF AGAIN. TRIED TO FIND A SAFE SPACE TO PULL OVER ON INTERSTATE; THE SHOULDERS ARE VERY NARROW ON I45. WHEN PULLED OVER ENGINE LIGHT ALSO CAME ON AND I TURNED ENGINE OFF AND IT WOULD NOT RESTART. CALLED TOW TRUCK, DEALERSHIP REPLACED WATER PUMP BUT THEN FOUND CATASTROPHIC ENGINE DAMAGE. FCA KNOWS THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH WATER PUMP BECAUSE THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON IT BUT THEY WILL NOT HONOR WARRANTY ON ENGINE BECAUSE THEY SAY I CONTINUED TO DRIVE WITH ENGINE LIGHT ON WHICH I DIDN'T. IF WATER PUMP HAD BEEN RECALLED I NEVER WOULD HAVE HAD CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE.

  9. Engine, Aug 11, 2020

WHEN VEHICLE IS RUNNING IN PARK YOU CAN HEAR A CLICKING SOUND IN THE ENGINE. WHEN IN PARK AND YOU EXCELERATE THE GAS THE CLICKING SOUNDS GETS FASTER. WHEN IN DRIVE THE SAME THING HAPPENS. NO ACTUAL ISSUES WITH ENGINE YET, BUT WITH RESEARCH AND SPEAKING TO OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME VEHICLE THEY HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH HIGHER MILEAGE. RESEARCH AND BRINGING IT TO A MECHANIC HAS COME TO THE CONCLUSION OF A BAD CAM SHAFT AND ROCKERS. TOTAL PARTS AND LABOR WOULD TOTAL CLOSE TO $2,000.

  10. Electrical system, Aug 9, 2020

2014 DODGE DURANGO - THE MAIN CONTROL PANEL IN THE CAR FREEZES WHICH RESULTS IN THE BACK UP CAMERA DOES NOT TURN ON, NOT BEING ABLE TO ADJUST THE VOLUME OF THE SYSTEM, NOT BEING ABLE TO ADJUST THE CLIMATE CONTROLS, AND THE NAVIGATION FREEZES. THIS CAN HAPPEN EITHER WHICH THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY OR WHILE RUNNING. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER WHO TOLD US MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS AFTER ONE OF THE RECALL SOFTWARE UPDATES THAT WAS ISSUED AND THEY ASSUMED A FUTURE SOFTWARE UPDATE WOULD FIX THE ISSUE. IT HAS BEEN AT LEAST 3 YEARS AND NO UPDATES HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM.

I THINK THIS SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BY CHRYSLER SINCE I WASN'T EVEN DRIVING MY VEHICLE - IT'S JUST A FAULTY HEADREST.

SO THE FIRST TIME I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY DURANGO. I ATTEMPTED TO START THE DURANGO AND IT JUST KEPT TURNING BUT WOULD NOT START. AT FIRST I THOUGH IT WAS MY FUEL PUMP. THEN I LOOKED AT THE FUSE AND THE FUEL PUMP MOTOR FUSE WAS A LITTLE BROWN ON THE PIN. SO I REPLACED IT WITH THE HORN FUSE 20A AND I WHEN I TURNED IT TO THE ON POSITION I COULD HEAR THE FUEL PUMP. DURING THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED I WAS I A HURRY TO WORK. I GOT MY KIDS IN TO DROP THEM OFF AND I GOT AND AND TRIED STARTING IT. SAME THING IT JUST KEEP TURNING BUT NO START. I CHECK THE FUSE AGAIN AND THE FUSE IS REALLY BURNT BUT NOT BLOWN. SO I WAIT FOR MY WIFE TO GET HOME SO I CAN BUY ANOTHER 20A FUSE. I REPLACE THE 20A FUSE AND IT STARTS. THIRD TIME THIS HAPPENED YESTERDAY 6-30-20. I CHECKED THE FUSE AND THE FUSE STILL LOOKS GOOD. DID MY RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT PREVIOUS DODGE DURANGOS HAVE BEEN RECALLED WITH BAD PUEL PUMP RELAY SWITCH FAILURE. NOW MY DURANGO SITS OUTSIDE BECAUSE IT WONT START. THE BAD RELAY SWITCH IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT WITH NEWER VEHICLES. I'VE NOTICED OTHER 2014 OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THIS.
