EXHAUST FUMES FILL THE CABIN OF VEHICLE DURING HEAVY ACCELERATION. USUALLY CAUSES HEADACHE. DEALER CONFIRMED ISSUE. DEALER ADVISES FORD HAS ISSUED A TSB BUT THE PARTS HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR MONTHS SO NO REPAIR IS ABLE TO BE COMPLETED AT THIS TIME.

  2. Other or unspecified, Sep 3, 2017

THERE IS A BURNING SMELL/ STRONG ODOR OF EXHAUST FUMES ENTERING THE VEHICLE WHEN DRIVING . IT SEEMS TO OCCUR MORE OFTEN OR BECOME STRONGER WHEN ACCELERATING UP HILLS OR WHEN ACCELERATING ONTO THE HIGHWAY, BUT CAN OCCUR WHEN DRIVING AT ANY TIME. MY WIFE, MYSELF, FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS WHO HAVE RIDDEN IN OR DRIVEN THE VEHICLE HAVE SMELLED IT. THE SMELL CAN BE STRONGER TO PASSENGERS IN THE REAR SEATING AREAS. THIS HAS OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS SINCE MY WIFE HAS LEASED THE VEHICLE ON 01/20/17 AND HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER TWICE TO BE CHECKED ,BUT THEY CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE VEHICLE WILL BE RETURNING TO THE DEALER THIS WEEK (09/06/17) AGAIN TO BE CHECKED .

  3. Other or unspecified, Engine, Sep 2, 2017

EXHAUST SMELL COMING INTO CABIN FROM THE FRONT VENTS ON HIGHWAY ACCELERATION.

  4. Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 1, 2017

AFTER A SCARY LONG DRIVE FROM INDIANA TO NORTH CAROLINA I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT LETTING THEM KNOW THAT I COULD SMELL EXHAUST WHILE DRIVING AND I FELT OVERLY TIRED, WAY MORE TIRED THEN NEED BE. AFTER TESTING IT WAS DETERMINED THAT CO WAS COMING INTO THE CABIN OF MY VEHICLE. THEY STILL HAVE MY VEHICLE NOW AFTER 2 WEEKS AND THE PARTS THAT WERE ORDERED WERE BODY FILLER AND ELECTRICAL TAPE. THIS DOES NOT SEEM TO BE THE APPROPRIATE FIX FOR THIS SITUATION THAT COULD CAUSE CATASTROPHIC INJURY OR DEATH AND NOW I AM SCARED TO PUT MY AND MY FAMILIES LIVES IN DANGER DUE TO MY VEHICLE TRYING TO KILL US. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN ON THE INTERSTATE AS SPEEDS OF 50-75 MPH. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND IF I WOULD NOT HAVE STOPPED SO MANY TIMES I WOULD HAVE PASSED OUT AND CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WHICH COULD HAVE KILLED ME OR SOMEONE ELSE. I WAS ADVISED THAT IF I WAS GOING TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE I SHOULD DO SO WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN, WHICH IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND WHY I HAVE HAD A LOANER CAR FOR WEEKS.

  5. Engine, Aug 26, 2017

I RENTED THE REFERENCED VEHICLE FROM ENTERPRISE RENTAL CAR FOR 1 WEEK. DROVE APPROXIMATELY 2000 MILES. THIS 2017 VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 20,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER WHEN I RENTED IT. I BELIEVE THAT THE ENGINE WAS THE 3.5 LITER VERSION. EVERY TIME I ACCELERATED HARD, SUCH AS ENTERING ON THE INTERSTATE, I COULD SUBSEQUENTLY SMELL A VERY STRONG EXHAUST SMELL IN THE INTERIOR OF THE SUV. I ALSO NOTICED WHEN I RENTED THE VEHICLE THAT ALL THE WINDOWS AND SURFACES HAD A FILM ON THEM - PERHAPS RESIDUE FROM EXHAUST GASES. I AM A 54 YEAR OLD RETIRED ENGINEER AND HAVE OWNED AND RENTED OVER 25 VEHICLES IN MY LIFETIME AND FIND WHAT I EXPERIENCED WITH THE EXPLORER TO BE VERY UNUSUAL. I ALSO FOUND THAT I WAS SLEEPIER THAN NORMAL WHEN DRIVING PERHAPS DUE TO CO2 EXPOSURE. ALL OF MY PASSENGERS ALSO EXPERIENCED UNUSUAL SLEEPINESS. THE EXHAUST SMELL IN THE INTERIOR WAS UNDENIABLE. I FIND IT VERY DISTURBING THAT FORD IS TRYING TO EXPLAIN THIS AS A PROBLEM WITH ONLY THE POLICE INTERCEPTOR EXPLORERS DUE TO AFTER MARKET MODIFICATIONS. MY EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT THIS IS A COMPLETELY FALSE AND MISLEADING EXPLANATION. I AM VERY PLEASED TO SEE THAT THE NHTSA IS DOING AN EA ON THE PROBLEM. FORD HAS IGNORED THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS AND THE PROBLEM IS VERY REAL. I WAS CONSIDERING BUYING THE EXPLORER WHICH WAS ONE REASON I RENTED THE VEHICLE AND FROM MY EXPERIENCE I WILL NOT TOUCH THIS VEHICLE AND WILL NOT BE PURCHASING ONE. PLEASE DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE REGARDING THIS PROBLEM AND I HOPE TO SEE THAT THIS EVENTUALLY LEADS TO A OVERALL RECALL OF ALL AFFECTED EXPLORERS. THANK YOU.

  6. Other or unspecified, Engine, Aug 26, 2017

EXHAUST SMELL COMES INTO THE CABIN WHEN CAR IS ACCELERATING. SEEMS WORST WHEN THE AC IS IN RE-CIRCULATION MODE. YOU CAN SMELL THE EXHAUST FUMES RIGHT AFTER THE ENGINE/TRANSMISSION HAS DOWNSHIFTED TO ACCELERATE.

  7. Other or unspecified, Aug 26, 2017

GAS ODOR LEAK INSIDE THE CAR WHILE DRIVING THAT CAUSED ME TO HAVE SXS OF DIZZINESS, NAUSEA AND VOMITING. IT HAPPENED IN MULTIPLE OCCASIONS.

  8. Other or unspecified, Aug 22, 2017

WE HAVE TAKEN OUR EXPLORER INTO A FORD DEALERSHIP TWICE NOW. WHEN YOU ACCELERATE ON THE HIGHWAY THERE IS A REALLY BAD EXHAUST SMELL IN THE CABIN FROM TIME TO TIME. THEY CLAIM TO FIX IT EVERY TIME AND THEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS AGAIN. I AM VERY WORRIED BECAUSE I AM 22 WEEKS PREGNANT NOW AND I HAD BEEN PLACED ON BED REST DUE TO SPOTTING I WAS HAVING. I AM NOT SURE IF THE TWO ARE LINKED. I AM NOT ON BED REST ANYMORE. THE CAR CONTINUES TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE. I WILL CHOOSE A DATE BELOW, BUT IT IS ONGOING.

  9. Other or unspecified, Aug 22, 2017

CARBON MONOXIDE INSIDE PASSENGER CABIN, WHEN DRIVING AT NORMAL SPEEDS IN HIGHWAY. HAD TO PULL OVER TO VOMIT AND WAIT A WHILE TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE. HAS HAPPENED IN VARIOUS OCCASION BUT WIRES THE LAST TIME.

  10. Other or unspecified, Aug 21, 2017

C0 DETECTOR WENT OFF ON A 3HR DRIVE ON 08-18-17 WITH AC AND AIR RECIRCULATION ON. AFTER OPENING THE WINDOWS THE DETECTOR STOPPED BEEPING. THE DETECTOR IS A GLUI CIGARETTE-LIGHTER POWERED DEVICE W/ TWO USB PORTS (HTTPS://WWW.AMAZON.COM/GP/PRODUCT/B01G2YJ3ZU) AND HAS BEEN INSTALLED IN THE CENTER CONSOLE CIGARETTE LIGHTER (FACING THE SECOND ROW SEATS) SINCE MID MAY. NO OTHER TIME HAS THIS ALARM WENT OFF. AT THE TIME OF THE ALARM THE DETECTOR WAS PARTIALLY COVERED WITH SOME FABRIC FROM A BAG AND THE DETECTOR WAS WARM TO THE TOUCH. WE WERE CAMPING IN A PLACE WITH NO CELL SERVICE SO WE DID NOT GET A CHANCE TO CONTACT FORD/NHTSA. WE DROVE HOME W/ THE WINDOWS OPEN. AFTER COMING BACK HOME I TRIED INTENTIONALLY SETTING OFF THE CO ALARM WITH A CAN OF CO. AFTER WARMING UP THE DETECTOR BY LETTING THE CAR RUN I SPRAYED CO INTO THE DETECTOR BUT I WAS UNABLE TO GET THE ALARM TO GO OFF AGAIN. IT IS UNCLEAR TO ME WHETHER THIS WAS A FALSE ALARM FROM THE DETECTOR OR A LEGITIMATE ISSUE WITH C0 EMISSIONS IN THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE NOT MANY ACTIVE CO ALARMS ON AMAZON FOR CARS, THE GLUI ONE IS THE MOST REASONABLE ONE I'VE FOUND. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED; I'LL BE CONTACTING FORD TODAY AS WELL.

  11. Other or unspecified, Aug 17, 2017

WHEN I ACCELERATE WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING UNIT ON, THE SMELL OF EXHAUST IS ENTERING MY CABIN. I HAVE TO ROLL DOWN THE WINDOWS TO LET THE SMELL OUT. ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH OUR VEHICLE. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT MY SAFETY AND THAT OF MY CHILDREN WHEN INHALING THIS SMELL.

  12. Structure, Engine, Aug 16, 2017

CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTED IN PASSENGER CABIN - AFTER READING STORIES ABOUT POSSIBLE PROBLEMS WITH CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) IN 2016 FORD EXPLORERS IN MID JULY 2017 I PURCHASED A KIDDE BATTERY POWERED CO DETECTOR AND INSTALLED IT IN THE REAR AREA OF THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. IT HAD NOT ALARMED UNTIL WE WERE TRAVELING FROM SENECA, SC TO INDIANAPOLIS, IN. WE WERE TOWING AN 8X5 ENCLOSED U-HAUL TRAILER AT NORMAL FREEWAY SPEEDS. TOW/HAUL WAS ENGAGED BECAUSE WE WERE TOWING AND THE ENGINE WAS GENERALLY RUNNING AT HIGHER RPM'S, ESPECIALLY GOING UP THE MOUNTAIN INCLINES. THE CO DETECTOR FIRST ALARMED WEST OF ASHVIILLE, NC. SUDDENLY THE HEADACHES AND DROWSINESS BOTH MY WIFE AND I WERE EXPERIENCING MADE SENSE. WE OPENED THE WINDOWS AND THE ALARM STOPPED AFTER A COUPLE MINUTES. AFTER THIS HAPPENED 3-4 TIMES I MOVED THE DETECTOR TO THE FRONT OF THE PASSENGER CABIN SO THAT I COULD MONITOR THE PART PER MILLION DISPLAY. WE FOUND THAT IT ONLY TOOK 15-20 MINUTES OF HIGHWAY DRIVING FOR THE DETECTOR TO DISPLAY 31PPM, THE DETECTORS MINIMUM CONCENTRATION DETECTION THRESHOLD. THE LEVEL WOULD THEN BUILD OVER TIME. DUE TO THE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS OF CO ON THE HUMAN BODY I NEVER LET THE CONCENTRATION EXCEED 62PPM. I FOUND, HOWEVER, THAT THE PEAK CO CONCENTRATION DETECTED WAS 103PPM. I ASSUME THIS WAS REACHED WHILE THE DETECTOR WAS IN THE REAR OF THE CABIN, WHERE THE DISPLAY WAS NOT VISIBLE TO ME. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT LAKE KEOWEE FORD SUGGESTED THAT I RUN THE HVAC IN RECIRCULATE MODE. I TRIED MANY DIFFERENT HVAC MODES - RECIRCULATE, NORMAL/OUTSIDE AIR, REAR HVAC TURNED OFF - BUT THE RESULT WAS ALWAYS THE SAME, CO BEING DETECTED IN THE CABIN WITHIN 15-20 MINUTES. NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM NOT BUYING FORD'S CLAIM THAT THIS PROBLEM IS ONLY WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT VEHICLES WITH BODY PERFORATIONS FROM THE INSTALLATION OF AFTER MARKET EQUIPMENT. THE VEHICLE IS GOING INTO A CARMEL, IN FORD DEALER THIS AFTERNOON.

  13. Other or unspecified, Aug 15, 2017

HEAVY SMELL IN CABIN WHEN THE AC IS TURNED ON. THE SMELL IS FOUL AND WORSE WHEN AC IS TURNED ON. DRIVER HAS HAD SEVERAL EPISODES OF NAUSEA, DIZZINESS AND OVERALL UNWELL FEELING SINCE PURCHASING IN NOVEMBER 2016. NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED AS OF YET, BUT THERE IS A DEFINITE PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE AND AM CONCERNED FOR MY THREE CHILDREN UNDER 6.

  14. Other or unspecified, Aug 9, 2017

MY 2017 FORD EXPLORER XLT HAS EXHAUST SMELL COMING THROUGH THE VENTS THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE. THIS IS NOT A NEW CAR SMELL BUT RATHER EXHAUST ODOR AND ONLY IS APPARENT WHEN THE AC SYSTEM OR FAN SYSTEM IS IN THE ON POSITION. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE ON JUNE 13, 2017 AND WAS HOSPITALIZED ON JULY 1, 2017 FOR THREE DAYS. THE DOCTORS WERE UNABLE TO PROVIDE A DIAGNOSIS ALTHOUGH I WAS EXPERIENCING HEADACHES, DIZZINESS AND TROUBLE WITH MY VISION. EVERY TIME I DRIVE MY EXPLORER AND TURN THE AC OR FANS ON I NOTICE A EXHAUST ODOR. I DEVELOP A HEADACHE, DIZZINESS FEEL SICK. I CALLED FORD AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NO RECALL ON MY VEHICLE AND TO TAKE IT TO A DEALER FOR A POSSIBLE CARBON MONOXIDE LEAK OR OTHER ISSUE THAT MAYBE CAUSING THE PROBLEM. FORD ALSO STATED THAT THE PROBLEMS WERE ONLY ON THE POLICE INTERCEPTOR VEHICLES EVEN THOUGH ALL EXPLORERES COME OFF SAME PRODUCTION LINE. NOTE: I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE FOR ALMOST TWO MONTHS. THE NEW CAR SMELL IS GONE AND THERE IS NO ODOR WITH THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE IS NOT IN THE ON POSITION. THE TOXIC ODOR IS ONLY NOTICEABLE WHEN THE VENTS/AC/FANS ARE RUNNING.

  15. Other or unspecified, Aug 9, 2017

WHILE DRIVING MY 2017 EXPLORER I GET SICK WHILE DRIVING. I GET A HEADACHE AND VERY NAUSEOUS AND SOMETIMES I GET DIZZY. I WILL DRIVE OTHER VEHICLES AND I DON'T GET SICK WITH THEM. I HAVE HAD MY EXPLORER FOR A YEAR AND I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR THE LAST 7 OR 8 MONTHS. WHILE DRIVING I GET SICK AND I FEEL LIKE IM GOING TO PASS OUT . I DON'T THINK IT'S VERY SAFE TO DRIVE LIKE THIS. ITS A DANGER TO MYSELF AND ALSO OTHER PEOPLE ON THE HIGHWAY.

  16. Other or unspecified, Aug 7, 2017

THE EXPLORER IS EXPERIENCING CARBON MONOXIDE LEAKS. THE FURTHER BACK YOU SIT IN THE SUV THE MORE YOU ARE EXPOSED TO THE CARBON MONOXIDE. WE PURCHASED A DETECTOR AND AFTER ONLY 10 MINUTES ON THE INTERSTATE THE LEVEL WAS 15PPM. AT 10PPM IT STARTS AFFECTING INFANTS AND WE HAVE A 11MONTH OLD

  17. Structure, Engine, Aug 4, 2017, crash

OCCASIONALLY WHEN I DROVE THE CAR I FELT LIGHT HEADEDNESS AND DIZINIESS. ON 8/3/2017 I FELT THE DIZZINESS AGAIN AND ENDED UP IN A CAR ACCIDENT. I FELT AS THOUGH I WAS GOING TO PASS OUT AND IN A FLASH I CRASHED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME.

  22. Structure, Other or unspecified, Engine, Aug 3, 2017

I AM CONCERNED ABOUT MY 2017 FORD EXPLORER AND A CARBON MONOXIDE LEAK. I HAVE OVERALL FEELING BAD SINCE WE GOT OUR NEW 2017 FORD EXPLORER, WHICH IS VERY OUT OF CHARACTER FOR ME. I AM A PRIOR SPECIAL OPERATION VETERAN, OVERALL IN GOOD HEALTH, AND ONLY 30Y/O. LIKE MANY, WHO HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS VEHICLE I AM GETTING NAUSEA, WEAKNESS, AND TENSION HEADACHES FROM DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN VERY WEAK AND HAVING HEADACHES, AS OF LATE. THIS HAS HAD A MAJOR IMPACT ON MY DAY-TO-DAY LIFE. I COULDN'T EXPLAIN WHY OR WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH ME IT SEEMED AS IF IT CAME OUT OF NOWHERE. I AM STARTING TO THINK MAYBE I HAVE LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO CARBON MONOXIDE OVER THE LAST 3 WEEKS. I GOT THE FORD EXPLORE 3 WEEKS AGO AND THIS SUDDEN SICKNESS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE THEN. I GOT SO WORRIED WITH MY HEALTH"I WENT TO THE DOCTOR. I EXPLAINED TO THE DOCTOR "I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT'S GOING ON WITH ME BUT I FEEL ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. I FEEL LIKE I HAVE HAD A FLU FOR ALMOST A MONTH". I WAS DESPERATE AND I KNOW I SOUNDED CRAZY BUT I HAVE BEEN HAVING SOME SERIOUS BOUTS WITH WEAKNESS, FATIGUE, AND HEADACHES. I WENT TO THE DOCTOR ON JULY 31ST 2017 AND I REALLY HAVE BEEN BAFFLED BY THE SUDDEN ONSET OF SYMPTOMS. THIS WAS BEFORE I KNEW ABOUT THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION INTO THE 2017 FORD EXPLORER. I SAW THE STORY RUN TODAY (8-3-17) ON GOOD MORNING AMERICA AND I STARTED TO PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER. AT THE DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT ON (7-31-17) THEY PULLED BLOOD, AND ARE CONDUCTING A BUNCH OF TEST BUT NOTHING HAS COME BACK. I AM CONCERNED, I AM HOPING IT'S NOT RELATED TO THE CARBON MONOXIDE LEAK THAT OTHERS ARE REPORTING. MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS FOR MY PREGNANT WIFE AND UNBORN CHILD. AS A PURPLE HEART VET I HAVE PUT MY HEART AND SOUL INTO OUR GREAT COUNTRY AND I NEED THIS AGENCY TO PLEASE FIND ANSWERS TO IF THESE SUVS ARE SAFE.
