Recalls and investigations

  1. Power train, manual transmissionJun 9, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2015-2018 Focus and 2013-2016 Fusion vehicles previously repaired incorrectly under recall numbers 18V169 and 18V845. The clutch may fracture, resulting in damage to the transmission assembly and possibly a transmission fluid leak.

A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.

Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Additionally, dealers will inspect Focus vehicles and replace the clutch assembly as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 5, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S43. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 6,2026.

An engine that stalls while driving increases the risk of a crash.

Dealers will update the powertrain control module (PCM) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 29, 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. 3. Equipment, electrical, engine block heaterJan 15, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2018 Focus, 2013-2019 Escape, and 2015-2016 MKC vehicles equipped with a 2.0L engine. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.

An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed March 6, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S01. 4. Latches/locks/linkages, doors, latchJun 8, 2020

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.

A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles with a 2.0L GDI or 2.0L GTDI engine. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system.

The excessive vaccuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Ford Customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S32. Note: Until the vehicle is serviced for this concern, owners are advised to keep the fuel tank at least halfway full.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."

With only a single press needed, the driver may accidently unlatch the hatchback, increasing the risk of injury to any unsecured passengers in the back.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Body Control Module with updated software, free of charge. The recall began February 10, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16C13.

WHEN ACCELERATING MY CAR SHUTTER LIKE CAUSING THE CAR TO SHAKE.

  2. Other or unspecified, Oct 27, 2018

AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM, AFTER ABOUT 45 MINUTES OF USE, WILL GREATLY REDUCE FAN SPEED. DEALER SAYS CONDENSOR MAY BE FREEZING UP DUE TO A BAD SENSOR. THE CAR DOES NOT STORE A CODE FOR THE DEALER TO DIAGNOSE WHICH SENSOR IS BAD SO THEY WON'T FIX IT. DEALER SAYS NEXT TIME IT IS IN FAILURE MODE, BRING IT IN TO TRY TO GET A CODE.

  3. Power train, Oct 27, 2018

THE CAR SHAKES AND STUTTERS IN LOWER GEAR AND IT IS VERY DANGEROUS. WHEN I GO FROM A STOP INTO FIRST GEAR THE CAR WILL NOT IMMEDIATELY START AND WHEN IT DOES, IT SHUTTERS. THE WHOLE CAR SHAKES WHEN I AM DRIVING IN THE CITY BECAUSE OF THE START/STOP. THIS IS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. OTHER FORD FOCUS CARS FROM 2015 ARE RECALLED, BUT MINE IS NOT FOR SOME REASON. THE TRANSMISSION IS GOING TO FAIL AND I ASKED FORD TO HELP RE-SET THE TRANSMISSION OR REPLACE IT, AND THEY WILL NOT. PLEASE HELP ME.

  4. Power train, Oct 25, 2018

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 FORD FOCUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN HE DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO DRIVE FORWARD, THE VEHICLE SEIZED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY AND WITHOUT WARNING. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED, IT RETURNED TO NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DCH FORD OF EATONTOWN (67 NJ-36, EATONTOWN, NJ 07725, 732-982-4222) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE CLUTCH FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 55,000.

  5. Electronic stability control (ESC), Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Oct 10, 2018

THE CAR IS OWN 3 YEARS OLD AND I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE FUEL EMISSION VALVES, THE COOLING SYSTEM, AND NOW THE UNAFFORDABLE TRANSMISSION CONTROL, CATYLATTIC CONVERTER, AND TRANSMISSION CLUTCH HAVE GONE OUT TO WHERE MY CAR WONT CHANGE SPEEDS WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY, NOR REVERSE.

  6. Power train, Oct 1, 2018

ON OR ABOUT 9/23/2018 AND WHILE DRIVING MY FORD FOCUS HB SE, I RECEIVED AN ERROR MESSAGE ON MY DASH THAT READ "TRANSMISSION FAULT SERVICE NOW". I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER SAFELY AND LATER WAITED FOR A TOW TO MY HOME. ON 9/25/2018 I CONTACTED A FORD DEALERSHIP NEAR MY HOME (SUBURBAN FORD OF FERNDALE) IN MICHIGAN. THE CAR WAS TOWED ON 9/28/2018 TO SUBURBAN FORD DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. INITIALLY, THE THINKING WAS THE TRANSMISSION MODULE (TCM) NEEDED SERVICING, HOWEVER THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INFORMS ME THAT THE DUEL-CLUTCH COMPONENT IS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDS REPLACING. I FURTHER UNDERSTAND THAT I'M NOT ALONE WITH THIS ISSUE. THE CAR HAS 62,056 MILES ON THE ROAD AND HAS HAD TYPICAL MAINTENANCE (TIRES, OIL CHANGE, ETC.). WHILE FORD'S EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERS TCM, CUSTOMERS, SUCH AS MYSELF, HAVING ISSUES WITH DEFECTIVE DUAL-CLUTCH ARE HAVING TO COME OUT OF POCKET FOR REPAIRS. THIS VEHICLE HAS MERELY 62,056 ROAD MILES NOT 162,056 MILES.

  7. Power train, Sep 29, 2018

2015 FORD FOCUS SE SHUDDERS WHEN STARTING FROM 1-2ND GEAR, I FEEL LIKE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. IT DOES EVERYTIME THE CAR STARTS FROM STOP POSITION.

  8. Structure, Sep 28, 2018

DRIVER SIDE DOOR LATCH WILL NOT ACTUATE AND THE DOOR WILL FLY OPEN WHILE DRIVING. FORD CLAIMS THIS PROBLEM IS NOT COVERED ON THIS VIN FOR A FOCUS ST EVEN THOUGH 2015 FOCUS DOOR LATCHES ARE LISTED ON AN EARLIER RECALL.

  9. Power train, Sep 26, 2018

MY 2015 FORD FOCUS HAD A RECALL DUE TO A FAULTY TRANSMISSION IN 2017. THE CARS ENGINE WOULD SHUDDER WHEN SWITCHING FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC/MANUAL TRANSITION. I REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION UNDER THE RECALL WARRANTY. HOWEVER, ALMOST A YEAR LATER TO THIS DATE MY TRANSMISSION/ENGINE IS SHOWING THE SAME SIGNS.

  10. Electrical system, Electronic stability control (ESC), Fuel/propulsion system, Sep 26, 2018

MY CAR DOES NOT ACCELERATE ON THE ROAD WHEN MY FOOT IS PRESSING DOWN ON GAS PEDAL BUT RPM INCREASES RESULTING IN STALLING IN MOTION LIKE CONDITIONS. IT IS VERY SCARY AND FRUSTRATING FOR ME AND MY OCCUPANTS THAT RIDE WITH ME TO WORK.

  11. Steering, Sep 21, 2018

AT JUST OVER 71,000 MILES OUR 2015 FORD FOCUS SE ELECTRICAL STEERING RACK FAILED AND NEEDED FULL REPLACEMENT AT AN OUT OF POCKET COST OF ALMOST $1800. DURING A TURN ON A CITY STREET, THE STEERING FAILED AND MAKE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, MAKING THIS PART AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. HAD IT GONE OUT AT THE WRONG TIME, A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE TAKEN PLACE. WE HAVE CONTACTED FORD AND VOICED OUR CONCERNS BUT THEY WOULD NOT AGREE TO COMPENSATION FOR AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE PART IN QUESTION WAS NOT YET RECALLED. WE HAVE SINCE PARTED WITH THE CAR AFTER THE REPLACEMENT OF THE FAILED PART, FEARING THE SAFETY OF DRIVING THE VEHICLE ANY MORE. UPON RESEARCH THE PROBLEM, WE FOUND SIMILAR INSTANCES ON CAR COMPLAINTS.COM INCLUDING THE WELL KNOWN TRANSMISSION FAILURES ON THIS VEHICLE. I BELIEVE A SIMILAR ISSUE OCCURRED IN FORD FOCUS MODELS BEFORE 2015 AND ALSO ON THEIR FUSION LINE OF CARS IN THE SAME RANGE OF YEARS OF AROUND 2013-2015 I WOULD LIKE THE NHTSA TO LOOK INTO THE 2015 FORD FOCUS FOR A RECALL ON THE STEERING SYSTEM AND SUBMIT TO YOU THAT YOU WILL NOT BE SHORT IN FINDING 2015 FOCUS OWNERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE AFTER A QUICK SEARCH ON THE WEB.

  12. Steering, Power train, Sep 14, 2018

THE POWER STEERING WOULD SPORADICALLY FAIL WHILE DRIVING CAUSING DANGEROUS CONTROL ISSUES. IT FINALLY FAILED COMPLETELY. THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN REPAIRED TWICE FOR ISSUES WITH SLIPPING AND CONTINUES TO DO SO

  13. Power train, Sep 13, 2018

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 FORD FOCUS. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED CLUTCH FAILURE WITH THE VEHICLE AND TOOK IT TO AUTONATION FORD LINCOLN UNION CITY (4355 JONESBORO RD, UNION CITY, GA 30291, (770) 674-6075) FOR REPAIRS. AFTER THE REPAIR, THE CLUTCH MALFUNCTIONED AGAIN AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DIFFERENT UNKNOWN DEALER. THE SECOND DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER A WARRANTY AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO CHARGE FOR THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE DIAGNOSIS INFORMATION WAS UNKNOWN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,023.

  14. Power train, Sep 11, 2018

CAR SHUTTERS BETWEEN 5 TO 15 MILES PER HOUR. REPLACED BATTERY TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON STATING TRANSMISSION IS HOT. TOOK TO FORD SAID ITS A DUAL CLUTCH THAT'S STUCK AND IT'S A SHIFT FORK THAT NEEDS REPLACEMENT. I SHOULD RECEIVE AN TRANSMISSION ISSUE AFTER REPLACING A BATTERY THEN BE TOLD IT'S A CLUTCH THAT STUCK. APPEARS TO BE THE SAME ISSUE FROM THE 2014 FORD FOCUS. THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING BACK FROM REPLACING THE BATTERY'S. TOLD BY FORD ITS MIMIC A BAD BATTERY.

  15. Power train, Sep 9, 2018

WHEN YOU START TO DRIVE FROM A COMPLETE STOP, THE TRANSMISSION HESITATES A LITTLE BEFOR IT GETS GOING.

  16. Power train, Engine, Sep 7, 2018

THERE IS NOW THIS GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM MY CAR ENGINE. WAS ACTING UP A MONTH AFTER I BOUGHT IT IN 2017. EVERYONE SAID OH IT'S FINE THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. WELL IT ACTS UP AS SOON AS I START TO DRIVE IT SLOW.... OTHERS SAY IT'S THE TRANSMISSION. AND OTHERS SAY I'M STUPID. IT SLIPS WHEN YOU START TO GO. I WANT THIS FIXED

  17. Vehicle speed control, Other or unspecified, Sep 4, 2018

TAKATA RECALL MY CLUTCH WAS MESSED UP IN THIS CAR WHEN I FIRST LEASED IT FROM US AUTO SALES BACK IN FEBRUARY 2017 AND I HAD RENTAL FOR A WEEK ONLY BECAUSE THE WARRANTY COVERED IT. NOW THE CLUTCH IS MESSED AGAIN AND I WAS TOLD I'LL HAVE TO PAY $2000 FOR IT TO BE FIX! IS THERE ANYWAY YOU GUYS CAN RECALL MY CAR BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY TO KEEP SPENDING ON THIS CAR BECAUSE THE SAME PROBLEM KEEP OCCURRING. IS ALWAYS JERKS AND DON'T ACCELERATE THE SPEED OF THE CAR THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS ANYWHERE.

  18. Power train, Aug 31, 2018

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 FORD FOCUS. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, A GRINDING NOISE WAS HEARD. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. WHEN ENGAGED IN DRIVE, THE VEHICLE HESITATED AND A NOISE EMERGED FROM THE TRANSMISSION. ALSO, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE LOST ACCELERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND KEPT FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES COULD NOT BE IDENTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,000.

  19. Power train, Aug 22, 2018

RACK AND PINION EPAS FAILED--GRADUALLY AT FIRST, THEN COMPLETELY. THIS PART HAS BEEN RECALLED IN OTHER FORD MODELS BUT NOT IN MINE--YET. THE REPAIR BILL WAS $2800. IT HAPPENED WITHIN A FEW DAYS OF 3-YR WARRANTY EXPIRATION AND I FILED A CLAIM WITH FORD. THEY REDUCED THE COST BY $2000, BUT I STILL HAVE AN $800 BILL TO PAY TODAY, AS THE CAR HAS BEEN FIXED. I FEEL IT SHOULD BE ALL COVERED UNDER A RECALL EXEMPTION. SHOP IS SERRAMONTE FORD, 999 SERRAMONTE BLVD, COLMA, CA 94014. REPAIN # 227 328.

  21. Power train, Aug 17, 2018

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 FORD FOCUS. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V169000 (POWER TRAIN). THE PARTS TO DO THE REPAIR WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER (CASA FORD, 5815 MONTANA AVE, EL PASO, TX 79925, (915) 779-2272) WAS CONTACTED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE RECALL REMEDY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CONFIRM WHEN THE PARTS WERE TO BECOME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

  22. Visibility/wiper, Aug 13, 2018

THE DRIVER'S SIDE WIPER IS FREEZING AND DOES NOT OPERATE PROPERLY NO MATTER WHAT OPERATION IT IS IN: LOW, MEDIUM OR HIGH. I HAVE HAD THE WIPER BLADES, WIPER ARM, AND WIPER MOTOR REPLACED AND NONE OF IT HAS FIXED THE PROBLEM. IT HAS LEFT ME IN SEVERAL DANGEROUS SITUATIONS. I HAVE ALMOST WRECKED NUMEROUS TIMES. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR THREE MONTHS. NOBODY SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM, INCLUDING THE FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPT.

  23. Steering, Electronic stability control (ESC), Aug 13, 2018

I WAS MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN ON A CITY STREET AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MILES PER HOUR WHEN THE STEERING GOT VERY HEAVY, THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED, A MESSAGE ON THE DASH STARTED THAT HILL START ASSIST WAS DEACTIVATED AND THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING. WHEN I PULLED OVER, THE CAR WOULD NOT SHUT OFF WHEN I PUSHED THE START/STOP BUTTON. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP UNDERGOING DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. I THINK IT MAY BE AN ABS SENSOR THAT CAME LOOSE BEHIND A WHEEL.

  24. Electrical system, Air bags, Aug 12, 2018, crash

OCTOBER 15 2015 I BOUGHT A FORD FOCUS 2015 S 4DR FROM THE DEALERSHIP. RIGHT AWAY HAD ISSUES WITH IT STALLING AND SHORTING OUT THE COMPUTER AND KEEPING A CHARGE. HOWEVER ON JANUARY 4TH 2018, I WAS SIDESWIPED GOING 45 MPH AND COLLIDED INTO A TREE AND A FEW OTHER VEHICHLES ALSO. I SUSTAINED SERIOUS INJURIES DUE TO NONE OF MY AIRBAGS DEPLOYING. THE CAR WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS AND I STILL AM PAYING ON THIS VEHICLE. IVE NOTICED MANY SIMILAR MODELS HAVING SIMILAR CONCERNS, HOWEVER MY SPECIFIC VIN STATES ITS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY RECALLS.

  25. Steering, Aug 10, 2018

DRIVING INTO A RECREATIONAL SITE, LOOKING FOR PARKING WITH CAR IN MOTION, POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND I COULD NOT STEER THE CAR. I PULLED OVER TO SIDE OF ROAD BUT TRYING TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LIKE MOVING A TON OF BRICKS. TURNED CAR ENGINE OFF AND BACK ON BUT STEERING WAS OUT. STEERING GEAR HAD TO BE REPLACED BY DEALER. FORD HAS A HISTORY OF RECALLS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. MY VEHICLE MAKE AND MODEL WAS NOT AMONG THOSE RECALLED.
