Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. 4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

  1. Power train, Engine, Mar 3, 2015

WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OVER 30 MPH THE ENGINE WILL LOOSE POWER AND THE RPMS WILL DROP AND THEN REV BACK UP. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THERE IS A QUICK ACCELERATION, LIKE MERGING ONTO THE FREEWAY, PULLING ONTO A BUSY STREET. THE WORST EXPERIENCE HAPPENED JUST LAST NIGHT, MARCH 2,2015. I WAS ACCELERATING FROM A STOP ON TO A BUSY STREET AND THE CAR STUTTERED AND SHOOK AS IF IT WAS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. I HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE SPEED OF THE CAR AND TRAFFIC WAS COMING TOWARDS ME IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. OUT OF NOWHERE THE VEHICLE CLICKED INTO GEAR AND ACCELERATED. WE REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY LAST YEAR AND ARE STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. REPLACING THE THROTTLE BODY HAS MADE NO DIFFERENCE. THIS VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE TO DRIVE IN ITS CURRENT CONDITION. *TR

  2. Power train, Engine, Feb 14, 2015

THE FIRST TIME I NOTICED SOMETHING WRONG I WAS TRYING TO PASS A SLOWER MOVING CAR. I TURNED THE SIGNAL ON, MOVED OVER TO THE PASSING LANE, WENT TO ACCL. AND THE CAR BASICALLY RED LINED AND WENT NO WHERE. SO I DON'T PASS AND GOD FOR BID PULL OUT IN FRONT OF FASTER MOVING CARS. NOW, AFTER DRIVING ACROSS TOWN, AND IT GETS UP TO NORMAL RUNNING TEMPS THE CAR HAS TROUBLE SHIFTING AROUND 3RD THROUGH 5TH GEARS. IT LURCHES LIKE IT WOULD IF A NEW DRIVER IN A MANUAL TRANSMISSION MIGHT DO, UNTIL YOU LET OFF THE GAS AND I GUESS LET THE MOTOR CATCH UP. *TR

  3. Power train, Engine, Dec 22, 2014

WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON. FORD IS TRYING TO SAY IT'S COVERED BECAUSE THE WRENCH LIGHT IS ON, AND THEN BRING YOU IN TO THE SHOP TO PAY $2000 FOR A VALVE BODY IN THE TRANSMISSION. THEY ARE PULLING THE WOOL OVER THE NHTSA BY MAKING IT SEEM LIKE THEY HAVE COVERED IT WHEN IT'S SOMETHING ENTIRELY DIFFERENT. SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT A NISSAN. BASICALLY THE CAR DOESN'T ACCELERATE. COME THE TIME I MIGHT GET HIT BY A CAR, I WONT BE ABLE TO ACCELERATE PROPERLY. *TR

  4. Power train, Engine, Dec 16, 2014

WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON AND THE CAR DOES NOT ACCELERATE! WHOLE VEHICLE SHAKES. FEELS LIKE THE CAR IS GOING TO JUST DIE. NOT HAPPY WITH THE CAR!!! *TR

  5. Vehicle speed control, Engine, Fuel/propulsion system, Dec 15, 2014

I FILED AN ORIGINAL COMPLAINT REGARDING SUDDEN FAILURE OF MY VEHICLE TO MOVE OR PRODUCE ANY POWER BACK ON 10-05-2013 UNDER NHTSA ID NUMBER 10546865. AT THAT TIME I DESCRIBED THE FOLLOWING: SUMMARY: I WAS AT A STOP LIGHT. THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE TO ABOUT 10 MPH WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH AND I COULD NOT INCREASE SPEED. IT SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 3 MPH AND THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AND NO MATTER HOW FAR I PUSHED THE PEDAL IT WOULD NOT MOVE PAST 700 RPM. THIS REPEATED ITSELF SEVERAL TIMES MORE THAT DAY. DID IT AGAIN AND IT SEEMED IT WAS INCREASING IN FREQUENCY. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE THROTTLE BODY FAILED AND THAT IT IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE. IT HAD AN ERROR CODE OF P2111. FILED ORIGINAL COMPLAINT BECAUSE I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A LARGE NUMBER OF THESE FAILING PREMATURELY AND TO DOCUMENT MY VEHICLE. I PAID THE REPAIR IN OCTOBER 2013 FOR EXACTLY SAME SYMPTOMS P2111 AND SAME CONDITIONS AS ALL OF THE OTHER VEHICLES IN THIS INVESTIGATION WERE EXPERIENCING. I KEPT TRACK OF NHTSA'S INVESTIGATION CAME TO FIND OUT THAT FORD HAD ISSUED A "CUSTOMER SERVICE CAMPAIGN" EARLIER THIS YEAR THAT EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE THROTTLE BODY TO 10 YEARS/150K MILES AND A LETTER WOULD BE SENT OUT. I NEVER RECEIVED ONE. CONTACTED MY DEALERSHIP WHO SAID THEY DID NOT SEE ANYTHING UNDER MY VIN BUT WOULD SEND THE REQUEST TO FORD. FORD SAYS THAT NHTSA DETERMINES WHICH VEHICLES FALL UNDER THE ISSUE. SO JUST CONTACTED NHTSA VIA TELEPHONE SPEAKING TO [XXX] WHO SAID THAT SINCE I ALREADY FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA THAT SHE COULD NOT HELP ME BUT SAID FOR ME TO GO ONLINE AND UPDATE MY COMPLAINT SO THAT THE NHTSA ENGINEERS WOULD INVESTIGATE FURTHER. IN WARRANTY DATABASE I FOUND MANY 2010 FORD FUSIONS PRODUCED BEFORE AND AFTER MINE (**/**) WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE A CALL FROM A NHTSA ENGINEER PLEASE. THANK YOU. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

TRAVELING AT 55MPH I SUDDENLY LOST POWER IN ENGINE AND WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT INTO ANOTHER GEAR. MY ENGINE SLOWED TO A ROUGH IDLE. I SAFELY WAS ABLE TO PULL TO ROADSIDE AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE NOTING A ROUGH START BUT THE CAR PERFORMED NORMALLY AFTER I BEGAN DRIVING IT DOWN THE ROAD. ABOUT A HALF HR LATER I WAS TRAVELING AT 35MPH WITH THE SAME THING OCCURRING, I WAS ABLE AGAIN TO PULL SAFELY OFF THE ROAD AND ABLE TO TURN OFF AND RESTART THE CAR NOTING AGAIN A ROUGH START BUT THE CAR PERFORMED AGAIN NORMALLY AND THE WRENCH WENT AWAY AGAIN. I WENT TO A SERVICE CENTER AND HOOKED MY CAR TO A COMPUTER FINDING P CODE 2111 WITH ACTUATOR STUCK OPEN. FORD INITIALLY TOLD ME THIS WAS MY ISSUE TO FIX WHEN I CALLED. THE SECOND TIME I CALLED I SPOKE TO A DIFFERENT REP AND INFORMED THEM OF THE KNOWN NHTSA INVESTIGATION AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE PROGRAM ALREADY ESTABLISHED. A CASE NUMBER WAS STARTED WITH THEM. I AM UNABLE TO GET TO A FORD DEALERSHIP UNTIL TUES DUE TO WORK. *TR

SINCE THIS VEHICLE WAS MADE WITH NO GAS CAP MY ENGINE LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON. ANY LITTLE BIT OF DIRT I DRIVE YET GETS INTO THE SEAL OF THE GAS TANK SO MY ENGINE LIGHT POPS ON AND STATES THERE IS SOME SORT OF LEAK IN THE SYSTEM. I CAN'T AFFORD TO KEEP TAKING IT IN TO PAY AND ARM AND A LEG FOR THE DEALERSHIP JUST TO BLOW OUT THE SEAL. SO MY ENGINE LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW IF THERE IS AN ACTUAL PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE OR IF IT'S JUST THAT DIRT IN THE SEAL OF THE GAS TANK. BIG MISTAKE BY FORD AND THEY SHOULD FIX IT OR THEY WILL DEFINITELY LOSE MY BUSINESS...WHICH I'VE BEEN FORD LOYAL SINCE I WAS OLD ENOUGH TO DRIVE. I WILL ALSO DETER ANYONE ELSE I KNOW FROM BUYING FOR JUST FOR THE CAPLESS GAS TANK FEATURE!!!!! *TR

THE ENGINE RAN EXTREMELY ROUGH AND THE CAR WOULD BARELY MOVE AT ALL. I COULD BARELY GET OFF THE ROAD BECAUSE OF THE EXTREME LOSS OF POWER AND VERY ROUGH IDLING. THE WRENCH INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON BOTH TIMES, BUT THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT COME ON EITHER TIME. AFTER SHUTTING OFF THE CAR AND RESTARTING IT, THE CAR OPERATED NORMALLY. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY LOST POWER UNDER ACCELERATION. I TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALER AND THEY FIXED IT FREE OF CHARGE. THEY SAID THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ISSUE, BUT HAVE NOT HAD TIME TO SEND OUT A RECALL YET. *TR

MY VEHICLE SUFFERED THE FORD CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM FOR THROTTLE BODY FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WILL IDEL ROUGH THERE WILL BE A SURGE AND THEN THE VEHICLE WILL GO INTO "LIMP HOME MODE" . THIS HAPPENED WHILE TURNING AT LIGHTFROM A STOP. THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED THEN HESITATED THE A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER WITH THE ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON. ATT HAT POINT THE CAR WAS IN "LIMP HOME MODE" THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR INSIDE THE THROTTLE BODY WAS THE PROBLEM. CONTACTED FORD AND MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED UNDER THEIR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM WHICH EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON OVER 1 MILLION FOR VEHICLES. I BELIEVE FORD NEEDS TO EXTEND THIS "CSP" TO A LARGER RANGE OF VIN NUMBERS AND ASSEMBLY PLANTS. *TR

TOOK CAR IN TO TROPICAL FORD IN ORLANDO FOR DRIVEABILITY RECALL. THEY CLAIMED TO REPROGRAM THE PCM. NOW ON SEPT. 6 THE CAR IS LOSING POWER AND STALLING OUT. ALSO THE WRENCH ICON IS SHOWING ON THE DASH WHICH IN THE MANUAL STATES THE ISSUE IS THE THROTTLE CONTROL/TRANSMISSION. I WILL HAVE THE CAR TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER SEPT. 8 TO HAVE REPAIRED. I SUSPECT IS ETB CONNECTIVITY PROBLEM, A LOT OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS/RECALL REPAIRS ONLINE. *TR

TRAVELING ON N.J. PARKWAY...SUDDENLY, ENGINE JUST STOPPED WORKING AND I HAD NO CONTROL OF ACCELERATOR. HAD BEEN IN MIDDLE LANE AT THE TIME AND AS I TRIED TO GET TO SIDE OF ROAD CARS HAD TO SWERVE INTO AROUND ME BECAUSE OF THE SUDDEN LOSS OF SPEED. I REPORTED THIS TO DEALER, BUT SERVICE MANGER ACCREDITED THE PROBLEM TO WATER IN GAS LINE OR DIRT IN FILTER. AS OF THIS WRITING, A RECALL WAS ISSUED FROM THROTTLE BODY PROBLEMS, HAD IT REPAIRED 2 WEEKS AGO, BUT TODAY, SAME PROBLEM HAS RECURRED. *TR

WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY WENT INTO IDLE AND IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO ACCELERATE. I WAS FORTUNATELY ABLE TO MAKE MY WAY OVER TO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT BEFORE THE CAR CAME TO A SHAKING HALT. THIS THEN HAPPENED 3 MORE TIMES AS I MADE MY WAY ON LOCAL ROADS TO A FORD DEALER. ALSO FORTUNATELY, THE DEALER REPAIRED MY CAR (REPLACED THROTTLE BODY AND REPROGRAMMED), WHICH WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, FREE OF CHARGE. I DON'T KNOW WHY SUCH A POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING DEFECT HAS NOT BEEN THE SUBJECT OF A RECALL. *TR

BEEN NOTICING THE CAR WOULD IDLE ROUGH FROM TIME TO TIME. WAS DRIVING HOME ON AUGUST 25, 2014 AND THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON, HAD NO ACCELERATION, EVEN PUT THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR BOARD. PULLED OFF SHUT CAR DOWN, AND RESTARTED AND EVERYTHING WAS GOOD. DID NOTICE SOME MORE SPUTTERING ON THE DRIVE HOME. TOOK IT IN AUGUST 27, 2014 AND DEALER STATED IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY SENSOR. $485.00 TO REPAIR THIS. I HAVE A 2005 FORD F150 ALSO AND STUCK $3,700 INTO IT LAST YEAR. THINKING THESE WILL BE THE LAST FORD PRODUCTS I WILL EVER OWN. I HAVE A 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH 225,000, ONLY THING I EVER REPLACED, OTHER THAN REGULAR MAINTENANCE ITEMS, WAS THE WATER PUMP. *TR

JUST AFTER STARTING THE CAR AND PULLING OUT TO DRIVE, THE WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON....THEN WHILE DRIVING THE ACCELERATION STOPS AND GOES TO 20 MILES PER HOUR OR LESS, THEN KICKS IN AND ACCELERATES AND DOES THE SAME THING AGAIN....I PULL OVER AND TURN OFF THE CAR, START THE CAR AGAIN, THE WRENCH LIGHT GOES OUT THEN THE CAR OPERATES NORMALLY. TOOK IT TO MCFARLAND FORD IN EXETER NH, AFTER READING INFORMATION ABOUT THROTTLE BODY MALFUNCTION. WAS DOING THE EXACT THING EVERYONE ELSE SAID THEIR CAR WAS DOING. WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A RECALL DUE TO THROTTLE BODY AND TO BRING THE CAR IN AT NO COST....COMPANY EXTENDED WARRANTY TO 10 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES. WHILE IT WAS THERE BEING "FIXED", THE MANAGER SAID HE COULDN'T COME UP WITH THE CODE FOR THE THROTTLE BODY, BUT A CODE THAT IS RELATED TO THE THROTTLE BODY CAME UP AND IS ABLE TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY IF ANYTHING RELATED TO THROTTLE BODY COMES UP, SO HE REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY. THE MANAGER PROCEEDED TO SAY IF THE WRENCH LIGHT COMES BACK ON, WE WOULD NEED TO BRING IT IN AGAIN BUT THIS TIME IT WILL COST. WELL, THE WRENCH LIGHT JUST CAME BACK ON AGAIN, TWO DAYS AFTER IT WAS "FIXED". *TR
