Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S12.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

  11. Wheels, lugs/nuts/bolts/studsDec 7, 2011

FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 FORD FUSION AND MERCURY MILAN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 17 INCH STEEL WHEELS AND BUILT FROM APRIL 1, 2009, THROUGH APRIL 30, 2009, AND FROM DECEMBER 1, 2009, THROUGH NOVEMBER 13, 2010. THE WHEEL STUDS MAY FRACTURE, POTENTIALLY CAUSING A WHEEL TO SEPARATE.

WHILE DRIVING, MULTIPLE STUD FRACTURES COULD OCCUR AT THE WHEEL LOCATION, AND THE OPERATOR MAY EXPERIENCE VEHICLE VIBRATION AND/OR WHEEL SEPARATION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR BRAKE DISC SURFACE FOR FLATNESS AND REPLACE THE DISCS AS NECESSARY. ADDITIONALLY, THE WHEEL LUG NUTS WILL BE REPLACED ON ALL FOUR WHEELS. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 24, 2012. 1. Power train, Vehicle speed control, Aug 15, 2016

THE NIGHT WE BOUGHT THIS CAR, USED FROM A FORD DEALER, IT WOULDN'T GO IN REVERSE WITHOUT JUMPING/BUCKING. THEY WERE SWIFT TO GIVE US A LOANER WHILE THEY "REPROGRAMEMD" THE CAR. NOW, IT ALL MAKES SENSE. THEY PUT A BANDAID ON IT UNTIL WE COULDN'T RETURN IT. SINCE THEN, JUST OVER 2YRS AGO, WE HAVE HAD THROTTLE REPLACED X3, CLEANED ONCE FOR $250 (WHILE ON THE WAY SOUTH FOR VACA, WE GOT STUCK HUNDREDS OF MILES FROM HM UNTIL FORD DEALER OPENED 2 DAYS LATER.) THIS CAR HAS STRANDED US THREE DIFF TIMES WHILE OUT OF STATE ON VACA. NOW WHILE ON INTERSTATE, THE WRENCH LIGHT WILL GO ON, THE CAR STARTS BUCKING AND ACTING LIKE A MANUAL IN THE WRONG GEAR. BUT, HAS NO ACCELERATION. JUST REVS TO 4K-6K RPMS. DANGEROUS ALMOST BEING RUN OVER BY SEMIS GOING FULL SPEED BEHIND YOU OR HAVING TO TRY AND CROSS 5 LANES OF TRAFFIC TO GET TO EMERGENCY LANE--WITH NO ACCELERATION! THIS CAR IS A DANGEROUS DEATH TRAP. SHOCKING TO ME HOW FORD HASN'T STOOD BEHIND THEIR VEHICLES. WE, AS A HUGE EXTENDED FAMILY, HAVE ALWAYS STOOD BEHIND FORD. ALWAYS BOUGHT FORD. NOW, WE HAVE BEEN DUPED BY THEM. THEY KNOWINGLY SOLD US A FAULTY CAR, PUTTING THOUSANDS OF OTHER BUYERS IN DANGER AS WELL, AND HAVEN'T DONE A THING TO PROVE TO THE CONSUMERS THAT THEY CARE ABOUT US AS CUSTOMERS OR ONE IOTA ABOUT OUR LIVES. IF FORD DOESN'T RECALL THESE, I KNOW WE WILL SEE DEATHS FROM IT. ITS PROB GOING TO BE THE NEXT AUTOMOTIVE WORLD SCANDEL LIKE THE AIRBAGS. OUR FUSION IS AN EXPENSIVE PIECE OF METAL, WITH A HUGE PYMT, JUST SITTING IN OUR DRIVEWAY USELESS. SOMEHOW, WE HAVE TO FIGURE A WAY TO SAVE THOUSANDS FOR A TRANSMISSION ON A 6YR OLD CAR. NEVER THOUGHT FORD WOULD TURN OUT TO TREAT THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS THIS WAY.

  2. Steering, Power train, Engine, Aug 7, 2016

THIS FIRST HAPPENED TO ME ON JUNE 1, 2016. MY 2010 FORD FUSION LOSES POWER ONCE IN A WHILE WHEN DRIVING. A WRENCH LIGHT APPEARS ON THE DASH BOARD AND THE CAR STARTS TO SLOW DOWN, ACCELERATOR DOES NOT WORK AND SOMETIMES THE CAR STARTS TO SHAKE. YOU WILL HAVE TO PULL OVER, TURN THE CAR OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN TURN IT OFF IN ORDER TO DRIVE IT UNTIL THE LIGHT COMES BACK ON AGAIN. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE IT IN THE HIGHWAY AND SPECIALLY WHEN SPEED LIMIT ITS 50 AND TRUCKS OR OTHER CARS ARE COMING AT A HIGH SPEED BEHIND YOU BECAUSE YOU DO NOT KNOW WHEN THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO YOU AGAIN. I HAVE THIS PROBLEM FOR A FEW WEEKS. I TOOK MY CAR FOR A RECALL FOR SOMETHING ELSE ON JUNE 24, 2016 AND I MENTIONED TO THEM ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND THEY SAID EVERYTHING WAS FINE. BUT I'M SURE IT WILL NOT BE FINE IF I GET INTO A CAR ACCIDENT AFTER COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE DEALER WILL ASK IF THE LIGHT ITS ON IN ORDER FOR THEM TO CHECK IT. BUT I HAVE MENTION THAT THE LIGHT GOES ON AND AS SOON AS YOU LOSE POWER AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND ON IT DISAPPEARS.

  3. Power train, Jul 27, 2016

MY 2010 FORD FUSION STARTED EXPIERENCING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WHILE AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT LAST WEEK. THE CAR SUDDENLY WENT INTO NEUTRAL WHILE THE GEAR SHIFT WAS IN THE DRIVE POSITION. AFTER PUSHING THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR FOR SEVERAL SECONDS THE CAR SLAMED INTO GEAR. I TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY FOR REPAIR. THERE HAVE BEEN NO ISSUES WITH THIS TRANSMISSION PROIR TO THIS EVENT. THE CAR HAS EXACTLY 111,856 MILES ON IT TO DATE. THE FORD DEALERSHIP DID AN UPDATE ON THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE AND TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE. THIS DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, THE CAR WAS FOUND TO NEED A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT FORD FUSIONS HAVING TRANSMISSION ISSUES. I CONTACTED FORD SO THAT THEY COULD DOCUMENT YET ANOTHER COMPLAINT ABOUT ONE OF THEIR FUSIONS HAVING TRANSMISSION FAILURE, AND ASKED THAT THERE BE A RECALL ISSUED. THEY SAID THEY HAD NO INTENTION OF ISSUING A RECALL. SO I AM ASKING THE NHTSA TO PUT SOME PRESSURE ON THEM TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER ISSUING A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS INJURED DUE TO A TRANMSSION FAILURE ON THE ROAD.

  4. Power train, Jul 24, 2016

LOSS OF POWER DURING ACCELERATION, DUE TO TRANSMISSION NOT SHIFTING PROPERLY. THE ENGINE RUNS AT HIGH RPM, BUT CAR DOESN'T MOVE. THIS ONLY HAPPENS AFTER CAR/TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR HOUR OR MORE. IT APPEARS BASED ON INTERNET SEARCHING, TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 6F35 TRANSMISSIONS IN FUSIONS AND ESCAPES. THIS HAPPENS MOSTLY ON CITY DRIVING - WHICH AFTER IT IS ON HIGHWAY SPEEDS IS IN THE TOP GEAR. ON HOT DAY, WHEN THE CAR IS WELL WARMED UP, STOP AND GO TRAFFIC IS VERY DIFFICULT AND COULD CAUSE ACCIDENTS.

  5. Power train, Engine, Jul 19, 2016

WHEN VEHICLE IS STATIONARY THROTTLE DECREASES TO BELOW 500 RPM, AND SOMETIMES STALLS. TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE CHECK COME IN INTERMITTENTLY. FORD AWARE OF THE THROTTLE BODY AND ACCELERATOR PROBLEM BUT WON'T FIX IT UNTIL BROKEN. TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP AND PAID $125 FOR DIAGNOSTIC BUT THEY TOLD ME THERE IS NO PROBLEM. I CALLED FORD AND THEY JUST REFERRED ME BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP STATING THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT WON'T FIX IT UNTIL IT IS BROKEN. PLEASE HELP, I CAN'T DRIVE THE CAR DUE TO THE SAFETY CONCERN.

  6. Power train, Engine, Jul 15, 2016

ENGINE STALLS/SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. ALARM P2111 CAME UP. THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL SYSTEM - STUCK OPEN. MY VEHICLE STALLED WHILE TURNING LEFT WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC. IT DID THIS 3 TIMES WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT ISSUE. I TAKE IT TO THE DEALER, THEY ADJUST, IT WORKS FOR A WHILE, THEN OCCURS AGAIN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM.

FUEL CAP CODES, EMISSION CONTROL CODES AND THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL CODE ARE NOW ON ALL THE TIME. I HAD TAKEN IT BACK TO FORD, BUT LIGHT HAD WENT OUT AT THE TIME. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CODES DO NOT LOG IN ECM. I WAS TOLD THEY COULD HOOK UP EQUIPMENT, THERE WOULD BE NO CODES AND THE COST $90.00. I LEFT. ON A SHORT TRIP THIS WEEKEND WE HAD PROBLEMS WITH ALL CODES STAYING ON AND NEW ONE FOR THROTTLE WHEN CRUISE WOULD NOT SET. I STOPPED AT AUTOZONE AND THEY COULD PRINT OUT STORED CODES. THEY ARE P0455, P0457,P2119. THEY HAVE PERFORMED AND THROTTLE RECALL ONCE AND I HAVE A LETTER FROM FORD ABOUT A RECALL, BUT NO RESPONSE AS OF YET. AS OF TODAY THE DASH SERVICE WRENCH HAS RESET. THE PROBLEMS START OVER A YEAR AGO ON TRIPS TO FLA. BUT LIGHTS ALWAYS SEAMED TO RESET AFTER SEVERAL KEY RECYCLES. WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT ABOUT 70 MILES PER HOUR, MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I COULD DO NOTHING TO RESTORE IT. THAT WAS ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO. I TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALER AND THEY WANTED $100 TO LOOK AT IT AND $1800 TO REPAIR IT. I AM ON A FIXED INCOME AND CANNOT AFFORD THE COST OF REPAIRS. IT WENT OUT AT 51,000 MILES. SHORTLY AFTER THIS HAPENED THE TRANSMISSION START LEAKING. I HAVE TO ADD 2 QUARTS PER MONTH. I HAVE CALLED FORD SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY HAVE NO RECALLS ON THIS YEAR. OVER 90% OF THE COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEB SITE HAVE TO DO WITH 2010 FORD FUSION STEERING PROBLEMS. MY WIFE CAN LONGER DRIVE THIS CAR AND DUE TO HEART SURGERY THERE ARE TIMES WHEN I CAN NOT DRIVE IT. I FINALLY CONTACTED A LAWYER AND THE STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE. I HAVE BEEN A FAITHFUL FORM CUSTOMER FOR MANY YEARS AND THIS IS THE BIGGEST PIECE OF JUNK IT HAS EVER BEEN MY DISPLEASURE TO OWN. MY NEXT STEP IS TO QUIT MAKING PAYMENT ON IT. I STILL OWE $14,000 ON THIS PIECE OF SCRAP METAL.

1ST TIME, I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AFTER DRIVING 50 MILES WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I STEPPED ON THE GAS, THE CAR REV'D LIKE THE CAR WAS IN NEUTRAL AND WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. AFTER SEVERAL TRIES, IT WENT INTO GEAR AND DROVE OK. THE 2ND TIME, I WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 60 MPH, AND THE CAR STARTED REVING AT 4,000 RPMS AND LOST ALL POWER. I PULLED OVER, PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND BACK IN GEAR SEVERAL TIMES TILL IT STARTED AGAIN. I PULLED OUT AGAIN ON THE 4 LANE AND THE CAR CONTINUED REVING AT AROUND 4,000 RPMS AND HAD NO POWER SO I GOT OFF THE ROAD AGAIN. THE "WRENCH" TROUBLE LIGHT LIT UP. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, SAT ABOUT 5 MINUTES, STARTED IT BACK UP AND IT WORKED FINE. I TOOK IT STRAIGHT TO A FORD DEALER WHO COULD NOT FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT.

TRANSMISSION IS LEAKING JUST LIKE THE HUNDREDS OF OTHERS I'M READING ABOUT ON FORUMS AND IT SOUNDS LIKE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM THAT MUST BE CONSTANTLY REPAIRED.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED TO SHIFT INTO SECOND GEAR AND THE ENGINE REDUCED POWER AND CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS RECENTLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V793000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 123,000.

DELAYED SHIFTING, ENGINE REVS WITH LITTLE PRESSURE ON GAS PEDAL AND CAR LURCHES FORWARD VIOLENTLY.

VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN WHILE CRUISING ON THE FREEWAY. THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. LOST CONTROL OF THROTTLE AND HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER. THE CAR WOULDN'T REV UP OR ANYTHING. AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF AND STARTING IT BACK UP AGAIN IT DROVE FINE AND THE WRENCH LIGHT DISAPPEARED.
