Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S12.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  8. Air bags, frontal, passenger side, inflator moduleDo not drive until repairedMay 31, 2016

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Ford Ranger vehicles, 2006-2011 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles, and 2005-2011 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Ford is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Ford Ranger, Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2006-2008 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles and 2005-2008 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Any vehicle not included in "Zone A", or "Zone B" is not included in the safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. 9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

  11. Wheels, lugs/nuts/bolts/studsDec 7, 2011

FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 FORD FUSION AND MERCURY MILAN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 17 INCH STEEL WHEELS AND BUILT FROM APRIL 1, 2009, THROUGH APRIL 30, 2009, AND FROM DECEMBER 1, 2009, THROUGH NOVEMBER 13, 2010. THE WHEEL STUDS MAY FRACTURE, POTENTIALLY CAUSING A WHEEL TO SEPARATE.

WHILE DRIVING, MULTIPLE STUD FRACTURES COULD OCCUR AT THE WHEEL LOCATION, AND THE OPERATOR MAY EXPERIENCE VEHICLE VIBRATION AND/OR WHEEL SEPARATION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR BRAKE DISC SURFACE FOR FLATNESS AND REPLACE THE DISCS AS NECESSARY. ADDITIONALLY, THE WHEEL LUG NUTS WILL BE REPLACED ON ALL FOUR WHEELS. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 24, 2012. I HAVE A 2010 FORD FUSION WITH 48,000 MILES, WHILE DRIVING IT I NOTICED IT STARTED TO MAKE A GRINDING NOISE IN THE REAR. SO I TOOK ONE OF THE TIRES OFF AND NOTICED THAT THE PADS WERE BADLY WORN SO I WENT DOWN TO THE PART STORE, GOT NEW ROTORS AND PADS. AFTER INSTALLING, I NOTICED THE ROTOR ON THE RIGHT REAR HAD A LARGE CRACK ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE ROTOR JUST UNDER WHERE THE PAD HITS THE ROTOR. IT IS ALMOST CRACKED ALL AROUND. I AM NOT AN ENGINEER, BUT TO ME, THAT IS A FACTORY DEFECT AND A SAFETY HAZARD TO ME AND MY FAMILY; THESE ROTORS WERE IN TERRIBLE SHAPE FOR 48,000 MILES. ONE GOOD POT HOLE, AND THE WHOLE TIRE AND EVERYTHING COULD HAVE CAME OFF BECAUSE OF THE CRACKED ROTOR. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. *TR UPDATED 11/10/2014 *JS

WHILE SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT, THE CAR STARTED ACCELERATING FASTER AND FASTER. HAD TO TURN THE CAR OFF TO GET IT TO STOP. NEXT LIGHT, THE SAME THING. TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY, AND THEY REPLACED IT. (RECALL?) WORKED OK UNTIL 3/27/2014 AND PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN, THE CAR STARTED ACCELERATING AGAIN. I TURNED THE CAR OFF TO GET IT TO STOP. GLAD I WASN'T ON A HIGHWAY OR INTERSTATE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. GOING BACK TO DEALERSHIP TOMORROW, AS I CONSIDER THIS A DANGEROUS PROBLEM. *TR

BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO FLOOR, USED EMERGENCY BRAKE TO AVOID REAR END ACCIDENT, DEALER CLAIMS METAL BRAKE LINE FAILURE DUE TO CRIMP FROM FACTORY INSTALL. LOCATION OF FAULT WAS UNDER AIR CONDITIONING UNIT. DEALER ORDERED NEW LINE FROM TENNESSEE, TOOK A WEEK, RENTAL CAR $200 AND LINE REPLACEMENT $488. I SUSPECT EARLIER REAR BRAKE ISSUE WAS CAUSED BY THIS FACTORY INSTALLED CRIMP. *TR

  5. Service brakes, Mar 17, 2014

PARKING BRAKE HANDLE WOULD NOT RELEASE BRAKES AND WAS TOTALLY LOOSE. BRAKES WERE LOCKED UP, BUT AFTER GOING IN REVERSE IT FINALLY RELEASED. SINCE THEN IF WEATHER IS BELOW FREEZING BRAKE LEVER CANNOT BE MOVED AT ALL. IF WEATHER IS ABOVE FREEZING IT SEEMS TO WORK BUT WE ARE AFRAID TO USE IT FOR FEAR OF LOCKING UP. SOME OWNER INPUT WAS FOUND ON INTERNET SAYING THAT THE CABLE BOOTS WERE POSSIBLY WORN AND WATER GETS INTO THE MECHANISM AND PREVENTS LEVER FROM OPERATING. SEEMS TO BE A COMMON FORD FUSION PROBLEM THIS TIME OF YEAR. CONTACTED FORD AND THEY HAD NO INPUT ON PROBLEM. I WILL HAVE IT LOOKED AT BY INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP AS THE LOCAL DEALER SERVICE DEPT. IS A THIEF. IN MEANTIME I CANNOT USE THE PARKING BRAKE. WARRANTY IS OVER BUT I THINK FORD SHOULD ATTEND TO THIS PROBLEM AS IT IS CLEARLY A DANGEROUS DEFECT. *TR

  7. Electrical system, Vehicle speed control, Service brakes, Feb 3, 2014

IT IS THE TYPICAL THROTTLE BODY ISSUE EVERYONE ELSE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT. IT WOULD RANDOMLY STALL COMPLETELY OUT ON THE MAIN ROAD. OCCASIONALLY, I COULD TURN OFF THE CAR AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON AND IT WOULD DRIVE ME A FEW MORE MILES BEFORE STALLING OUT AGAIN. CAR WOULD RANDOMLY ACCELERATE WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES. CAR WOULD VIOLENTLY "JUMP" LIKE IT WAS MISSING GEARS WHILE ACCELERATING. ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO ACCELERATE SPEED WITHOUT PUTTING MY FOOT TO THE FLOOR. I BOUGHT A NEW THROTTLE BODY FOR ABOUT $400 I THINK IN SEPTEMBER 2012 AND WITHIN A YEAR IT WAS ALREADY DOING THE SAME THINGS MENTIONED ABOVE. I JUST RECEIVED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM FORD IN THE MAIL AND WILL GET A REFUND FOR MY PREVIOUS EXPENSE ON A NEW THROTTLE BODY. IT PRETTY MUCH SEEMS LIKE A RECALL BUT WITHOUT ACTUALLY SAYING IT IS. I DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS ANY FURTHER ACTION THAT CAN BE TAKEN BUT IF SO THEN PLEASE DO. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CAR WITH A SHORT SHELF LIFE. I ALMOST GOT BLASTED FROM MY SIDE TWICE BECAUSE I WOULD BE TURNING OFF A 4 LANE ROUTE WITH PLENTY OF DISTANCE FROM ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND THE CAR WOULD STALL. I WAS BASICALLY A SITTING DUCK SIDEWAYS HOPING IT WOULD ROLL ME FAST ENOUGH TO GET OUT OF THE WAY. I HOPE THIS HELPS. *TR

  8. Service brakes, Jan 18, 2014, crash

I WAS IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC AND ENCOUNTERED A HARD BRAKING SITUATION. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND MET NO RESISTANCE FROM THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH NO ABS ENGAGING. I NEVER EVEN GOT A SQUEAL OF THE BRAKES WORKING. I WAS AT LEAST A CAR LENGTH BACK WHEN I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES. I ENDED UP HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT, THEY IN TURN HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF THEM. IRONICALLY I WAS THE ONLY ONE HURT FROM THIS CRASH. I FRACTURED MY FOOT FROM HITTING THE BRAKE SO HARD. I CAN'T IMAGINE THIS IS A NORMAL BRAKE FUNCTION. I BOUGHT THIS CAR AS A CERTIFIED USED CAR WITH 4000 MILES IN NOVEMBER 2013. I HAVEN'T HAD MY FIRST SERVICE SINCE THE PURCHASE. ROAD CONDITIONS BARE,FLAT SURFACE AND DOWNHILL. WEATHER AROUND 30 DEGREES AND SOME LIGHT FOG. I WILL RETURN TO DEALER TO INSPECT BRAKES. *TR

THE PARKING BRAKE ON MY MANUAL 2010 FORD FUSION WILL FREEZE IN PLACE IN TEMPERATURES BELOW FREEZING. WHILE THE PARKING BRAKE IS DISENGAGED AND THE INDICATOR LIGHT GOES OFF, THE PADS REMAIN IN CONTACT WITH THE REAR TIRE, CAUSING EXCESSIVE HEAT, THREAT OF FIRE, LOSS OF EMERGENCY BRAKING, OR LOSS OF CONTROL. THIS ALSO CAUSES EXCESSIVE AND PREMATURE WEAR / DAMAGE TO THE AFFECTED BRAKING SYSTEM. THIS PROBLEM IS WELL DOCUMENTED ONLINE BY FORD OWNERS IN NORTHERN CLIMATES. *TR

THE CAR WAS INSPECTED BY THE DEALER AT 40,000 MILES AND BRAKING SYSTEM WAS RATED GREEN ("THE PADS ARE OKAY"). WHEN THE CAR WAS NEXT SERVICED AT 47,387 MILES (WITHIN THE REGULAR SERVICE INTERVAL) THE LEFT REAR BRAKE CALIPER HAD FROZEN, CAUSING THE PAD TO BE WORN TO BARE METAL. I AM WORRIED BECAUSE BRAKES ARE A MAJOR SAFETY COMPONENT, THE DRAG MAY HAVE DAMAGED THE WHEEL BEARING, AND I HAVE READ (FORDFUSIONFORUM.COM) OF MANY INSTANCES EXACTLY LIKE MY OWN THAT HAVE LED TO RECURRING PROBLEMS OF REAR BRAKE FAILURE. *TR

  16. Service brakes, Oct 10, 2013, crash

I WAS ATTEMPTING TO STOP IN NORMAL, FLOWING TRAFFIC WHEN MY CAR PEDAL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR. IT RESULTED IN MY CAR CRASHING INTO ANOTHER CAR THAT WA--AT LEAST--THE LENGTH OF THREE CARS IN FRONT OF ME. THERE WAS NO RESISTANCE AT ALL WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES (WHILE THE CAR WAS IN A STOPPED POSITION). THE OFFICER ON THE SCENE SAID THAT HE TRIED IT AND THEY WERE FINE; HOWEVER, THE ONLY THING KEEPING THE CAR FROM ROLLING OFF THE TOW TRUCK AND INTO ANOTHER CAR WAS THE HAND BRAKE. I WANT. *TR

  17. Service brakes, Aug 27, 2013

THE PARKING BRAKE FREEZES IN FREEZING WEATHER. YOU CAN STILL LOWER (RELEASE) THE PARKING BRAKE HANDLE, THE WARNING LIGHT IN THE DASH WOULD GO OFF, BUT THE REAR RIGHT BRAKE STAYS ENGAGED. THIS LEAVES THE DRIVER TO BELIEVE THAT THE BRAKE HAS BEEN RELEASED WHEN IN FACT IT HASN'T. THIS HAPPENED TO ME THIS PAST WINTER. THE CAR FELT SLUGGISH AS IF IT WAS DRAGGING SOMETHING. ABOUT 10 MINUTES INTO DRIVING WE SMELLED A BURNT SMELL AND HEARD A METAL POPPING NOISE FROM THE REAR RIGHT WHEEL. WE STOPPED AT A GAS STATION TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING. THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE WAS BURNING HOT, THE BURNT SMELL WAS VERY STRONG, AND IT CONTINUED TO MAKE THE METAL POPPING NOISE AS IT WAS EXPANDING DUE TO THE EXCESSIVE HEAT. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS PROBLEM HAS TO DO WITH THE DESIGN OF THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE. WE WERE ALSO TOLD TO NOT USE THE PARKING BRAKE IN WINTER OR IT LIKELY WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS ON BECAUSE IT CAN LEAD TO THE CAR CATCHES FIRE. *TR

MY MECHANIC FOUND THAT MY BRAKES WERE SO RUSTED THAT THE REAR ONES WERE FUSED TOGETHER WITH RUST. HE WAS AS SURPRISED BY THIS AS I WAS. I SAW THE PARTS AND HAVE USED THIS SHOP FOR YEARS. HE NEVER SAW ANYTHING LIKE IT IN A CAR WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE. HAS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW, AND POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS. SO $900.00 LATER, I STILL HAVE TO WORRY THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. I DOUBT I'M THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. *TR

I WAS TURNING OUT OF MY STREET AT APPROX. 5 MPH IN MY 2010 FORD FUSION AND HEARD A CHIME LOOKED ON DASH AND IT READ "ADVANCE TRAC NEEDS SERVICE" ALSO THE LIGHTS FOR ABS, TRACTION CONTROL AND EMERGENCY BRAKE WERE ILLUMINATED. THE STEERING WHEEL GOT VERY STIFF AND I COULD NOT TURN MAKING ME HIT A CONCRETE BARRIER. CAR HAD NO WARNING BEFORE STEERING WENT OUT. PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM I SEE IT IS VERY COMMON FOR 2010-2012 FORD FUSIONS. CAR IS AT DEALERSHIP NOW AND HE THINKS IT MAY BE THE STEERING RACK, WHICH IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE TO FIX ESPECIALLY WITH 0 WARRANTY WHICH EXPIRED LAST DECEMBER. *TR

I OWN A 2010 FORD FUSION AND I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL GOING DOWN TO THE FLOOR. THE BRAKES ARE SOFT, AND THE BRAKE PEDAL IS NOT OPERATING CORRECTLY. I TOOK IT TO A SHOP TO HAVE THE BRAKES CHECK TO SEE IF I NEEDED NEW BRAKE PADS OR WHAT THE ISSUE WAS. I WAS REFERRED TO THE DEALER FOR POSSIBLE FACTORY WARRANTY BRAKE CONDITION, STATING IT HAS TSB ON BRAKE BOOSTER SWITCH, BRAKE PEDAL LEVEL SWITCH PROBLEM. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES AND THEY STATE THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES, BUT WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE BRAKES ARE NOT OPERATING CORRECTLY. THE BRAKE PEDAL IS GOING DOWN TO THE FLOOR WHEN BRAKING IS NOT A NORMAL OPERATION, DRIVING THIS CAR IS DANGEROUS. THE BRAKES FEEL LIKE A SPONGE AND I FEAR ONE DAY THIS CAR IS NOT GOING TO STOP, AND I HAVE EXPLAINED THIS TO THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP AS WELL AS THE MANAGER IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. WELL MY FEAR ALMOST CAME TO LIGHT WHEN I HAD TO FLOOR THE BRAKES TO STOP THE CAR WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO BECAUSE THEIR IS NO RECALL ON THE BRAKES AND THERE IS NO SERVICE COMPLAINT FROM FORD. THE ONLY ACTION TAKEN BY THE DEALERSHIP WAS TO BLEED THE BRAKES, WHICH DID NOTHING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. AT THIS POINT I FEEL I HAVE NO RECOURSE BUT TO PARK THE CAR UNTIL I CAN GET ANOTHER VEHICLE, BECAUSE I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. *TR

GOT OFF THE EXPRESSWAY AND WHILE STOPPED AT LIGHT SMELLED "SOMETHING". 3 BLOCKS LATER AT MY HOUSE I FELT THE HEAT FROM THE REAR WHEELS ON MY LEGS AND REALIZED THE SMELL WAS FROM REAR BRAKES. JACKED UP BOTH REAR WHEELS AND FOUND THE WHEELS ALMOST IMMOVABLE. REAR PADS WORN DOWN TO 2-3MM! FRONT PADS STILL HAD 10MM OF PAD REMAINING ON ALL FOUR PADS! NO PROBLEM (OR USE OF) WITH PARKING BRAKE. CALIBERS HAD BEEN STICKING - DRAGGING FOR QUITE SOME TIME TO WEAR DOWN TO ALMOST NOTHING WHILE LEAVING FRONT BRAKES WITH YEARS LEFT ON THEM. CAR WAS STILL IN WARRANTY. *TR

MY FORD FUSION WAS PARKED IN THE PARKING LOT WHILE SHOPPING. TEMPERATURE APPROXIMATELY 15 DEGREES F. BEFORE GOING INTO THE STORE, I HAD SET THE PARKING BRAKE, AS THE CAR WAS PARKED ON A SLIGHT INCLINE. UPON EXITING THE STORE AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE, I DISENGAGED THE PARKING BRAKE. HOWEVER, THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE DID NOT DISENGAGE. INSTEAD, A LOUD GRINDING SOUND OCCURRED. THE BRAKE EVENTUALLY DISENGAGED, BUT BY THIS TIME, THE BRAKE ROTOR WAS EXTREMELY HOT. THIS HAD OCCURRED ONE TIME PREVIOUSLY, ALSO ON A COLD DAY WHEN THE PARKING BRAKE WAS SET. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN INTO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE RIGHT REAR ROTOR HAD OVERHEATED AND BEEN DAMAGED. PADS AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED. UPON PICKING THE CAR UP FROM THE DEALERSHIP, I DROVE APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES TO HOME, AND WHEN I EXITED THE CAR, THE RIGHT ROTOR WAS VERY HOT AND THE SMELL OF BURNING BRAKES WAS PRESENT IN THE GARAGE. THE LEFT ROTOR WAS COOL ENOUGH THAT I COULD PLACE A HAND ON IT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. I WAS UNABLE TO EVEN MOMENTARILY TOUCH THE RIGHT ROTOR. IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE, I HAD NOT ENGAGED THE PARKING BRAKE, AS THE VEHICLE WAS PICKED UP FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT ENGAGED. VEHICLE HAD PREVIOUSLY HAD BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS REPLACED ONLY 13000 MILES PREVIOUSLY (38000 MILES) DUE TO EXCESSIVE REAR BRAKE PAD / ROTOR WEAR. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD FUSION. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH AND DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, WHICH ABNORMALLY TRAVELED TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ALSO ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKES AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF A SECOND TIME. THE CONTACT RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND DID NOT EXPERIENCE ANY FURTHER BRAKING ISSUES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000.

WHEN THE WEATHER GETS BELOW FREEZING THE PARKING BRAKE FREEZES - YOU CAN RELEASE THE PARKING BRAKE WITH THE PARKING BRAKE HANDLE AND THE PARKING BRAKE WARNING LIGHT GOES OFF BUT THE PARKING BRAKE STAYS ENGAGED WITH THE DRIVER UNKNOWING THAT THE PARKING BRAKE DID NOT RELEASE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE DRIVER IS NOT AWARE OF THE PARKING BRAKE BEING ENGAGED UNTIL THE BRAKES GET SO HOT THAT SMOKE BEGINS TO POUR FROM THE REAR WHEELS WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS CAUSING A FIRE FROM ALL THE HEAT. ALSO WHEN THE PARKING BRAKE DOES NOT RELEASE AND YOU APPLY THE BRAKES WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE BRAKES DO NOT RESPOND THE SAME AS WHEN THEY ARE APPLIED UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN OCCURRING EVERY TIME THE WEATHER GETS BELOW FREEZING SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS BOUGHT NEW AND THE DEFECT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO THE LOCAL FORD SERVICE DEPARTMENT NUMEROUS TIMES WITH THEM MAKING AN EFFORT TO CORRECT THIS DEFECT BUT IT HAS NOT HELPED AND THE PROBLEM STILL EXIST. THIS VEHICLE IS IN NORTH ALABAMA WHERE THE WEATHER GETS COLD BUT NOT IN AN AREA IN THE NORTHERN STATES WHERE THE WEATHER IS MUCH COLDER. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN THIS MORNING AND THE LOW TEMPERATURE FOR THE NIGHT WAS 30 DEGREE F AND IT HAS NOT RAINED IN OVER A WEEK. I OWN THREE OTHER VEHICLES THAT ARE PARKED IN THE SAME AREA AS THIS VEHICLE THAT DO NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEM AS WITH THIS VEHICLE. *TR

  25. Steering, Electronic stability control (ESC), Service brakes, Dec 11, 2012, crash

THE VEHICLE LOST POWER STEERING, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BRAKES UPON ENTERING THE FREEWAY ON RAMP. TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND ENDANGERING OTHER DRIVERS, I WAS FORCED TO CRASH INTO THE CONCRETE WALL BARRIER ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE ON RAMP. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD UNTIL AFTER COMING TO A STOP AND THE ENGINE DIED. AT THAT POINT THE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. *TR
