Recalls and investigations

  1. Air bags, frontal, driver side, inflator moduleMar 10, 2021

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2007-2011 Ranger, 2006-2012 Fusion, Lincoln Zephyr, Lincoln MKZ, 2006-2011 Mercury Milan, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKX vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator or module with an alternate one, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on April 9, 2021 for the passenger side, and November 14, 2022 for the driver side. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S12.

  4. Service brakes, hydraulic, antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip, control unit/moduleDec 18, 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid and install a new brake fluid reservoir cap. In addition, the HCU will be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition, replacing the HCU as necessary. All services will be performed free of charge. The recall began April 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S54.

  8. Air bags, frontal, passenger side, inflator moduleDo not drive until repairedMay 31, 2016

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Ford Ranger vehicles, 2006-2011 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2007-2010 Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles, and 2005-2011 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Ford is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Ford Ranger, Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles, 2006-2008 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ vehicles, 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles and 2005-2008 Ford Mustang vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Any vehicle not included in "Zone A", or "Zone B" is not included in the safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been performed. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. 9. Fuel system, gasoline, storage, auxillary tankNov 24, 2015

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Ford Fusion vehicles manufactured July 21, 2008, to March 4, 2011, and 2010-2011 Mercury Milan vehicles manufactured July 23, 2008, to December 10, 2010. The affected vehicles have fuel vapor canisters whose purge valves may not operate properly resulting in abnormal pressure changes in the fuel tank.

The pressure changes may cause the tank to crack and leak fuel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle powertrain control modules and inspect the vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for this issue and perform a leak test on the Canister Purge Valve (CPV). The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks. The CPV and fuel tank will be replaced as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S34.

  10. EquipmentMay 29, 2014

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain all weather driver side accessory floor mats sold for use in model year 2006-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, 2006 Lincoln Zephyr, and 2007-2011 Lincoln MKZ vehicles manufactured November 9, 2007, through October 31, 2010. The affected floor mats may move and possibly interfere with the accelerator pedal.

The floor mat could shift such that it could interfere with the accelerator pedal, preventing its return to an idle position, which could result in unintended vehicle speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install new replacement mats, free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S07. NOTE: Vehicles built after October 31, 2010, while potentially equipped with the same floor mats, are equipped with a Brake Over Accelerator (BOA) feature that prevents simultaneous accelerator and brake application, allowing the vehicle to be safely stopped by pressing firmly and steadily on the brake pedal.

  11. Wheels, lugs/nuts/bolts/studsDec 7, 2011

FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 FORD FUSION AND MERCURY MILAN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 17 INCH STEEL WHEELS AND BUILT FROM APRIL 1, 2009, THROUGH APRIL 30, 2009, AND FROM DECEMBER 1, 2009, THROUGH NOVEMBER 13, 2010. THE WHEEL STUDS MAY FRACTURE, POTENTIALLY CAUSING A WHEEL TO SEPARATE.

WHILE DRIVING, MULTIPLE STUD FRACTURES COULD OCCUR AT THE WHEEL LOCATION, AND THE OPERATOR MAY EXPERIENCE VEHICLE VIBRATION AND/OR WHEEL SEPARATION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR BRAKE DISC SURFACE FOR FLATNESS AND REPLACE THE DISCS AS NECESSARY. ADDITIONALLY, THE WHEEL LUG NUTS WILL BE REPLACED ON ALL FOUR WHEELS. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 24, 2012. POWER STEERING GOES OUT FOR NO REASON. IN MOTION. HAPPENED ONCE WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT. ANOTHER TIME 15 - 20 MPH. WHAT IF THIS HAPPENS AT HIGHER SPEEDS? DEALERSHIP WANTS MORE THAN $100 TO LOOK AT IT? MORE THAN $1400 TO REPLACE? THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. CALLED FORD MOTOR COMPANY CUSTOMER SERVICE TO LOOK FOR SOME RECOURSE AND I WAS READ A STANDARD DOCUMENT ABOUT IT BEING THE CUSTOMERS RESPONSIBILITY.

  2. Steering, Electronic stability control (ESC), Feb 12, 2020

THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE IN 2010 FUSIONS AS YOU CAN FIND LOTS OF SIMILAR EXPERIENCES. WHILE HEADING TOWARDS AN EXIT ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 70MPH, THE STEERING SUDDENLY LOST ALL POWER STEERING. TWO WARNINGS APPEARED ON THE DISPLAY SAYING "SERVICE ADVANCETRAC" AND "POWER STEER ASSIST FAILURE." EVERYTHING RETURNS TO NORMAL AFTER RESTARTING THE CAR AND IT HAPPENS ONCE AGAIN AT RANDOM.

  3. Steering, Feb 12, 2020

MY 2010 FORD FUSION HYBRID HAS LOST ALL STEERING THREE TIMES OVER THE PAST TWO MONTHS. AFTER BRINGING IN FOR SERVICE, THE MECHANICS HAVE FOUND NOTHING AT ISSUE OTHER THAN NEEDING TO RESET THE COMPUTER AS IT IS ALL SEALED ELECTRONICS. THIS OCCURRED AGAIN TWICE WITHIN TWO DAYS AND WITH THE SAME RESPONSES FROM THE MECHANIC. I AM CONCERNED AS THE INCIDENT TODAY OCCURRED WHILE TURNING INTO TRAFFIC, WHICH ALMOST CAUSED A HEAD ON COLLISION. THIS OCCURRED WHILE I WAS IN MOTION, TURNING ONTO A CITY STREET. FROM ADDITIONAL RESEARCH ONLINE, HAVE FOUND SIGNIFICANT COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER 2010 FORD FUSION HYBRID OWNERS AS WELL, BUT HAVE NOT HAD ANY NOTICES BY FORD TO RESOLVE THIS SAFETY ISSUE

  4. Steering, Feb 11, 2020

THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING IN AUGUST 2014 WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE. SELF TEST SHOWED CODES C1277, U3003, B1C83, B10AF, P0606B, C100B. I HAD TO PAY TO HAVE IT REPLACED AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP. MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE FORD FUSION POWER STEERING RECALL OF ABOUT 2014 OR 2015 EVEN THOUGH I HAD THE SAME SYMPTOMS AND FAILURE DESCRIBED IN THIS RECALL.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 FORD FUSION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILED CAUSING THE DRIVING TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHICH CAUSED THE WHEEL TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE CURB. AFTER THE FAILURE THE MESSAGE "SERVICE POWER STEERING IMMEDIATELY" HAD DISPLAYED. THE MANUFACTURER(CAS-25482608) WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER DON HINDS FORD(12610 FORD DR. 10. Steering, Feb 3, 2020

MY 2010 FORD FUSION SEL HAS LOST ALL POWER STEERING DUE TO A FAILURE IN THE ELECTRONIC RACK AND PINION. I STARTED MY VEHICLE AND RECEIVED TWO WARNINGS ON THE INFORMATION SCREEN IN THE CLUSTER: POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT, AND SERVICE ADVANCETRAC. I'VE DONE RESEARCH AND HAVE BEEN TO MULTIPLE FORD DEALERSHIPS, AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO OTHER THAN CHARGE ME OVER TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS TO HAVE MY VEHICLE FIXED. YET, THE 2011 AND 2012 MODEL YEARS HAD A FULL RECALL OF THE PART AT NO COST. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE ON FORD'S BEHALF AND EXTREMELY UNSAFE DUE TO THE FACT THAT WITH THE POWER STEERING BEING OUT, THE STABILITY CONTROL IS ALSO DISABLED. YES, MY VEHICLE IS DRIVE-ABLE BUT IT IS DEFINITELY NOT SAFE AND EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER AT SLOWER SPEEDS. IT'S AN ACCIDENT AND LAWSUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN, AND I DO NOT WANT TO BE THE UNFORTUNATE ONE TO GO THROUGH SUCH A THING. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, BEFORE ANY LIVES ARE LOST OR PREVENTABLE ACCIDENTS OCCUR.

  11. Steering, Electronic stability control (ESC), Feb 2, 2020

SERVICE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AS I WAS DRIVING HOME. THE NEXT MORNING I TURNED ON THE CAR AND IT SAID SERVICE POWER STEERING NOW. HAVE SEEN THAT I AM ONE OF THE MANY PEOPLE HAVING THIS ISSUE. SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED NOT JUST THE 2011 WHICH IS JUST ONE YEAR NEWER.

THE POWER STEERING IN MY 2010 FORD FUSION HAS WENT OUT. THIS IS A DAILY DRIVER FOR MY DAUGHTERS COMMUTE TO COLLEGE. TRYING TO TURN IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE AND EVEN MORE SO WHEN SHE IS IN THE CROWDED CITY. THERE WAS A RECALL UP TO 2011-2017 ON THIS ISSUE AND THE 2010 NEEDS TO BE INCLUDED!! THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS

  18. Steering, Jan 28, 2020

CAR WAS PARKED. TURN THE CAR ON AND NO POWER STEERING. SUDDEN FAILURE. TOLD TO I HAVE TO GET A NEW RACK AND PINION WHICH IS OVER $2000. THE POWER STEERING CAME BACK ON AFTER THE BATTERY WAS UNPLUGGED OVER NIGHT. SAME PARTS AS THE RECALLED 2011 FORD FUSION. POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT CAME ON AND I LOST POWER STEERING. FORTUNATELY I WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY AND NOT ON THE INTERSTATE.

  20. Steering, Jan 28, 2020

THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT, THAT IS CURRENTLY ON RECALL FOR 2011 AND UP, IS THE SAME EXACT THING THAT IS HAPPENING TO MY 2010. I NEED THE 2010 TO BE REEVALUATED AND ADDED TO THAT RECALL. I DID NOTHING TO CAUSE THE POWER STEERING TO GO OUT, THIS IS 100% ON FORD. THEY NEED TO FIX THE ISSUE. I HAVE NO POWER STEERING AND IF I WERE TO EVER WRECK DUE TO THIS ISSUE, I WILL INVOLVE LAWYERS AND GET THE FORD NAME INVOLVED. 2010 NEEDS TO BE ADDED TO THE RECALL!!!!!! I AM NOT THE ONLY 2010 WITH THIS SAME ISSUE. IF ITS HAPPENING TO THOUSANDS OF 2010'S, IT IS A FORD RECALL ISSUE. NOT CAR OWNER ISSUE. I NEED THIS PROBLEM FIXED NOW.

THIS TIME THE MECHANIC ACCIDENTALLY LEFT HIS SCANNER ON THE CAR OVER THE WEEKEND AND IT DRAINED THE BATTERY. WHEN THE MECHANIC CHARGED THE SYSTEM AND STARTED THE CAR; THE MESSAGE "SERVICE POWER STEERING NOW" WAS GONE AND THE POWER STEERING WAS BACK. IN DEC. THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AGAIN WHILE DRIVING. WE ONCE AGAIN HAD THE RACK AND PINION CHANGED. NOW IT IS JANUARY 24TH AND THE POWER STEERING IS GONE AGAIN. EACH TIME; THE DRIVER OF THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN LUCKY BECAUSE IT HAS HAPPENED AT LOW SPEEDS. IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE GOING AROUND A CURVE GREATER THAN 45 DEGREES; THIS DRIVER WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR. NOW ALL WE WANT TO DO IS GET RID OF THE CAR; UNFORTUNATELY, WE CANNOT KEEP THE POWER STEERING FROM GOING OUT AND I WILL NOT PASS THIS ISSUE ON TO SOMEONE ELSE.

THE POWER STEERING COMPLETELY WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING WHICH ALMOST CAUSED ME TO WRECK. AT FIRST, TURNING THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTING IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. NOW IT IS COMPLETELY OUT AND IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SAFELY DRIVE. I UNDERSTAND THE 2011 MODEL FORD FUSION ALSO HAD THIS ISSUE, WHICH WAS RECALLED. THE 2010 FORD FUSIONS ALSO NEED TO BE RECALLED. IT IS NOT SAFE TO OUR CHILDREN OR ANYONE ELSE TO RIDE IN THE 2010 FORD FUSION WHEN THE POWER STEERING JUST RANDOMLY GOES OUT.
